The average Joe on the street had to find out how to buy bitcoins to pay the ransom. If ransomware start asking for Monero as ransom, people will just scratch their heads and move on. It will be a long time before any other cryptocurrency comes close to Bitcoin.
I am sure that people being desperate enough to actually pay ransom, will have no problems into taking an extra stap as in buying Bitcoin first, and then convert it to Monero. I haven't really looked in dept into the anonymity aspect of certain altcoins, but if they are really as anonymous as the developers state them to be, then these criminals might actually go for it. Because as it is right now, the collected ransom Bitcoins are pretty much worthless as basically everyone can follow these coins step by step. They have to come up with something new. Those bitcoins aren't worthless. You just have to run them through a mixer (like the one advertised in your signature) or a tumbler. For a small fee, you get anonymized units of the world's numero uno cryptocurrency.

people do post a lot on bitcoins its just not every person posts about it. I know some of the users who posts about bitcoin daily and hence no one even like his post. and its same for me too if I post anything about bitcoin only I gets some likes but only from people who founds it interesting but doesn't have urge to know about it. people in my locality do not have any intrest to learn about bitcoin or any other crypto currency
That is right. Flooding people's feeds about Bitcoin might be counterproductive and might just put them off. They could just ignore your posts and that wouldn't help. What you need is to post articles which would make an impact. In today's bull run, your friends might be tempted to read these articles.

Current Price BFX: $1,972 ATH 14.2k longs vs -16.1k shorts Still more short interest and all short sellers are underwater. There is barely enough liquidity to cover in case of a positive news event and the price skyrockets. Still not close to ending... and it will be violent! This looks to be the violet ending. Price closing in on $2100. I am sure those shorts must be leveraged. If so, you will have crazy margin calls on them. Some people are going to get bankrupt quickly.

Bitcoin / Press / Re: [2017-05-20]Bitcoin Price Breached $2,000, Pundits Coin-Flip What Comes Next
|
on: May 21, 2017, 03:35:41 AM
|
Bitcoin price finally breached the much anticipated $2,000 line, sending excitement throughout the burgeoning global cryptocurrency community. As early as five a.m. GMT+2 on Saturday, CoinMarketCap listed the pacesetter of digital currency for $2014 with almost $34 mln Market Cap. The $2,000 lane has been expected for some time now but it intensified three days ago when Satoshi Nakamoto's brainchild stabilized at the $1,800 range. On Friday it made it to the $1,900s further increasing the $2,000 price obsession. https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-price-at-1934-all-time-high-led-by-us-to-reach-2000-soon$34 Mn?? You are off by a factor of 1000. This rally doesn't look like it is going to stop soon. Within 3 hours of crossing $2K, the price is at $2073. We might cross $2100 soon.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: I think we are greedy
|
on: May 21, 2017, 03:33:34 AM
|
I have been trying to deposit/withdraw fiat into different exchanges, and I found that most fees are absolutely ridiculous (7%-10%?!). With many options to deposit/withdraw fiat (and different fees), I think we are getting a bit greedy with Bitcoin.
According to Bitcoin price at the moment, depositing fiat worth of 1BTC ($2,053) requires fees ranging between $21-$205, while most of us want to transact that same 1BTC with something like $0.5 and getting rage over the delay!
I think paying $1-$5 in fees is relatively acceptable, since bitcoin price is rising every single day.
Well, just think that a couple of years, there were priority transactions which you could send across without fees. I am not saying that we should expect to send across bitcoins without fees, but the current situation of congestion is artificially created. It has solutions but we are waiting for consensus. That is what is putting off people.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin as a source of income?
|
on: May 20, 2017, 09:23:06 AM
|
Yes, bitcoin can be a source of income because there are students that can depend on bitcoin only. I usually post here in bitcointalk when I have the free time. I can do trading buy and sell, and I can use bitcoin because of that. And I'm thinking that I would build and create my own business here in online using bitcoin, and hopefully become successful so I can earn a lot of money. But as of now, I'm focusing on trading.
I am not for students posting on forums to earns pennies. School / colleges are where the foundation of the rest of your life is laid. The time you spend studying might act as a boost for your career. Don't waste time in signature campaigns and faucets. If you still have free time, go out and chase girls/boys. Or enjoy a nice game or two of football.

The price was average around $1,000 around February. The momentum seems to be only picking up. The bubble has a long way to go. Who thinks we will see $3k? $5k??
People usually try to define bubble in terms of how much an asset is overvalued, when compared to its intrinsic valuation. Unfortunately, there is no basis with which you can value cryptocurrencies. For all you know, Bitcoin may be deeply undervalued now.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to deal with the situation of non-recognition?
|
on: May 20, 2017, 09:06:48 AM
|
Hi,
Since my friends have an idea that I am associated with bitcoin and I transact in it, they send me the stuff from the media if they come across. In most of the media pieces, bitcoin is mentioned as 'bitcoin is an unrecognised currency' and at that point, the people misunderstand that if it's not recognised (legal) yet then it's definitely illegal. I am bit confused, how to deal with such situation?
Best Dudeperfect
You need to educate people. The people who write those media articles are no experts, and at times giving a background about Bitcoin to your friends helps. This may be tiresome, but if you do explain it to your friends, I am sure they will pick up the threads. This is how Bitcoin adoption increases.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin is all over the mainstream media lately
|
on: May 16, 2017, 03:28:14 PM

I'm trying to sell some internet stuff with bitcoin lately and many people who find my sale topics from google want to pay via banks. Surprisingly i was able to sell my stuff with bitcoin but there were many people who didn't know what bitcoin is. I insisted on getting paid in bitcoins so i refused the offers from those who had no idea about. If everybody does like me, bitcoin will get boosted big time. This lack of knowledge on the other hand is a good thing somehow. It shows us that bitcoin is still nowhere near big and there is much more room to grow. Lack of knowledge about Bitcoin among common people is understandable. But it is ridiculous to blame the failure of WannaCry on the decision to ask for payments in Bitcoin. The reason it failed was that a security researcher got lucky and triggered the kill switch. If anything, all future malware payments will be demanded in bitcoins.

Maybe most people have figured out that there is no use in paying because the program doesn't know who has paid.
Paying a bunch of criminals is no solution. If you pay them once, you will give them incentive to continue doing so. Plus you don't know if your files will really be decrypted after paying. Only solution is to either professionally have the systems 'cleaned', or they need to be wiped out and a back up being installed. I am quite happy that the number of paid ransom is severely lacking if you take the size of this attack into consideration. You do not trust the criminal? There is a solution - In the future, malware will have smart contracts. You can be sure that your files will be decrypted once you pay the ransom. The only way to transact with an untrustworthy person.

Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Monitoring WannaCry hackers' bitcoin addresses in real time
|
on: May 15, 2017, 01:28:37 AM

Addresses are a little over 20 BTC. Never thought they'd see this much money, actually... Question: Once you pay the ransom, how does the hacker know it was you who paid?
I missed that part. I mean people are sending their BTC to them. How are they tying the payment to the computer?
I was questioning myself exactly this. Maybe the ransomware hás a place to input txid? Hmm... The ransomware would then need to centrally keep track of which transaction ids have been used. What is somebody just copies the transaction id once the transaction is broadcast and keys it into the ransomware?

i think price will shoot to 10000$ by next week
for those wondering 10000$ is too much.. think about thousands rushing to buy bitcoins to pay the ransom
- This is your over speculation, $2000 may sound realistic but $10k is way far. - Even if those thousands of people buy billions dollar worth of bitcoin, price will not rocket to your speculation. But when new people buys bitcoin it will certainly have some positive effect on price. For some weird reason, the price seems to be not affected by this attack. It seems to be hovering around $1800. The only explanation is that the increased demand for bitcoins has been offset by the negative press regarding Bitcoin. A lot of people consider Bitcoin as a hacker's tool now.

... The best way to prevent such attack is to UPDATE ANTIVIRUS PROGRAMMES FREQUENTLY.
Avoiding Windows too, particularly XP. Unfortunately, none of the media outlets seem to be highlighting this point. Most articles give more negative press to Bitcoin, rather than Microsoft in this attack. And lay people tend to believe what they read.

I am also just wandering will astronauts need bitcoin or other money in their travelling through the Universe?
They are not totally detached from the real world. If an astronaut's wife has shopping bills, they have to be paid. And yes, all they have to do is get their bitcoin transaction broadcast to the internet. Voila, they have used bitcoins in space.

on: May 13, 2017, 04:00:20 PM

Just like the others said it is a best opportunity to invest due to its progressive state that surpassed the expectations of other people. The value of bitcoin is still rising so, why not try to invest? Maybe the value can go up to 4k within next months. This can happen since it already surpass 1k ,3k more to go which can happen since bitcoin value now is really increasing unexpectedly, we can't really tell what might happen next. I agree. But we can not deny the possibility that bitcooin will return to $300 because its technology is very obsolete right now. It need to be fixed immediately or it will be sweep away $300 doesn't look possible to me at all. Even with all the uncertainty around hard fork, we still have come so far. Only if a major bug in Bitcoin's code is discovered and people lose money, will we go to sub $500 levels.

probably he missed a certain law approved in April and that could expand BTC's user base immensely in the upcoming years
probably thought was just some 1st April joke
Bitcoin has a mind of its own. Even if laws do get approved, the price rise is based on pure speculation. Speculation that the user base could expand. Speculation that the block size debate will be settled.
