I am using the 0.72 version, and I need days to update the blockchain file. Now, I met the same problem as OP met.

I am using Ubuntu10.04, in a VM6.0 environment.
The repair instructions are similar as posted above. The blockchain download is likely stuck or corrupted.

The bitcoin data directory is located at ~/.bitcoin (in your home directory). To repair, you will need to close Bitcoin, rename the files BLKINDEX.DAT, BLK0001.DAT, BLK0002.DAT, BLK0003.DAT, rename the "database" directory, and start Bitcoin again to re-attempt synchronization from the beginning, which may take many hours.

If you wish to save some time, after renaming the old files, you can download this ZIP file:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/bitcoin/files/Bitcoin/blockchain/bitcoin_blockchain_170000.zip/download
Unzip it to the data directory, after renaming the old files but before restarting Bitcoin, and you will have the blockchain up to March 2012 and will only need to download new blocks since that date.

1683  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: [Pre-Release] Custom Bitcoin Address Generator - Put your name in your address! on: January 30, 2013, 03:16:29 PM
This application is in violation of the GPL, the license and source code are not included. It uses Samr's vanitygen code.

This application crashes before it can run (or before I can detect bad actions). It extracts and deploys it's payload to a temp directory.

New import blocks procedure - Bitcoin version 0.7.1+:...

Making sure that I understand you correctly, with Bitcoin version 0.7.1+, there is now no reason (even for security purposes) to use the bootstrap.dat method as offered by jgarzik at that last link, because now any external blockchain files used are fully validated when following these quoted steps?
Rather, there is no reason not to use it other than time required, which is still 6+ hours to import the blocks after the time spent downloading (making total time near that of normal sync on a good connection), and the fact that the method the developers hoped to create - simply drop a bootstrap.dat file in the datadir and it will be automatically imported - will only will import up to 2.0GB of blocks due to a bug.

Here is a summary of methods, using the current 0.7.2 client:

1. From an already-synced copy of Bitcoin (which must have been last closed with the -detach option), copy all blockchain files (BLK000x.DAT) plus the matching index file (BLKINDEX.DAT) to your data directory [fast, no re-verification of block data]
(This is what I offered in the first post, but I've temporarily removed my files due to DOS attempts. The current best drop-in blockchain is this 2.1GB torrent),

2. From an already-synced copy of Bitcoin, copy just the blockchain files (BLK000x.DAT), and use the -loadblock=BLK0001.DAT -loadblock=BLK0002.DAT -loadblock=BLK0003.DAT option to import any or all block data into your fresh Bitcoin, and re-verify the contents. [slow, safe, verifies all data],

3. Get the bootstrap.dat that has been distributed (2.3GB torrent or direct download ), and drop it in your data directory before you start Bitcoin, to import only 2GB of blocks up to 189205 (due to bug). Basically does the same thing to import data as loadblock command. [slow, safe, only 40% of current size]

3a. Optionally split the bootstrap torrent into two parts, and import both parts with the -loadblock option to use the complete data (instructions here). [slow, safe, only 50% of current size]

Bitcoin 0.8.0+ fixes the bootstrap.dat import bug and will probably coincide with a new larger bootstrap torrent. It also improves the initial download experience with it's complete refactoring of how data is downloaded and stored.
1685  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Namecoin's Dot Bit Domain Name Cypersquatting on: January 30, 2013, 01:26:37 AM
what's to stop someone forking the namecoin project and altering the code to make new .somethingelse domains? agreed it would potentially run into the same situation.. but is there anything we can learn from the namecoin experiment?

Domain names are simply stored as d/DOMAIN, you can put them on any TLD you choose on your own domain server. Example, look up any domain at DOMAIN.dot-bit.org

There is no domain conflict with any generic .bit top level domain anyway. Nobody paid the $185,000 to apply for such a domain.

Is namecoin basically a dead project then ?

Namecoin is not dead. The current difficulty/hashrate is 897134. You are just looking in the wrong place.

"Squatting" is going to be present anytime someone sees a profit potential - you can take it as many optimistic about Namecoin.

You can pick either side of the argument:
Too squatted vs. too expensive
Too many names taken vs. nobody uses Namecoin

I pulled the number of unexpired names (all names stored in the chain, not just domains) two days ago, there were 61780 registered Namecoin names, which is not heavily squatted. If there were only 100 names, you could call it unsuccessful; if there were 100,000,000 names (dotcom), then it might be too full of names.

People generally won't send $350 worth of BTC to someone who just showed up two days ago and their first agenda is getting a member to send them BTC. In addition, you in no way describe what escrow you would considering using. It sounds like you just heard that word.

If you are really in that ZIP code, I can meet and verify that you own the camera to sell, in the condition you describe, for the benefit of buyers, and will receive and hold a buyer's Bitcoin in escrow (from you), until I see the camera packed, shipped, and tracked in person. They don't get their camera, they get their Bitcoins back.

I will also first distribute the 1 BTC contest winnings that you have committed to in this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=139063.0, since you have now promised an award if the camera sells. As your method of choosing a winner will in no way prevent you from sending the 1 BTC to -nobody-, I will assess the contest entrants and use the provably fair ticket picker here: http://we.lovebitco.in/raffle.html

BTW, I will take BTC from anybody, trusted or not. Bitcoin can be trusted.

1691  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Is there any NMC development going on? on: January 27, 2013, 09:42:39 PM
He is just making up nonsense, which is why I had to unignore to see what was written. How does a "domain squatter" also "have all the coins"? Domain names cost money (0.02), which is destroyed by reserving a name. Namecoins are merge mined by many pools, ownership is spread as wide as all the users of more than half the pools. There are currently 61780 registered Namecoin names, including namespaces that are not for domains. That is compared to 105 million dot com domains. I'm sure you can find something not "squatted".

There was one proof-of-concept for using Namecoin to store an alias (like a nickname for your bitcoin address), but it never was really live. Otherwise, it is a DNS system that nobody uses for resolving domains. It is still 0.3.24-based, so any security concerns that have been addressed in new Bitcoin updates are still present. It works fine and doesn't need shameless pump-and-dump promotion, since it was the first alt-coin and wasn't created by some get-rich speculator.

If you have some interesting project that needs (name)->(some number) mapping or have some other concept that could use it, it will keep on making a blockchain for you to store your data in.
1693  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY 5BTC] Graphics for NEW Bitcoin Social Network on: January 27, 2013, 03:38:20 PM
This is a contest, not a bounty. More like a lottery, because a contest usually has a winner.

Some Basic Rules:
  • submissions must be posted to this thread before Friday, February 1st 00:00 EST
  • submissions must contain a link to a PNG (preferred) and/or a high resolution JPEG
  • we reserve the right not to pick any submission
  • we reserve the right to edit the chosen submission to fit our needs
  • by participating in the bounty you agree that you waive all your rights related to the design and that we can use it for our product (we will be fair if your ideas are incorporated by not wholly selected)
So you don't have to pay anything, but you want the right to use any design submitted? Sounds fair.

I think it's time for the forum to start having rules about this kind of "bounty", starting with the funds being held in escrow before someone can advertise such a solicitation for others to do free work for them.

Some spoilsport added that privkey to Gox auto-sweep, so I out-double-spent them and sent the balance to miner fees.
1695  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MT Gox adding funds via Dwolla??? on: January 27, 2013, 07:11:03 AM
Mtgox changed what "verified" means again. What I had to do to withdraw from my already-withdrew-to-dwolla-a-shit-ton Gox was to verify with ID (a week), then go into "funding options"->"Withdraw funds". Then in the drop down you will have either "US Dollar (Dwolla)", or you will have that option PLUS "dwolla" (or whatever you labeled it) if you are verified. If you don't have the latter, you need to pick "US Dollar (Dwolla)" and choose "add withdraw method", follow the steps in the "withdraw wizard" where you expand "dwolla" and press "bank transfers", fill in your dwolla info, and wait a few days more for them to "verify" Dwolla.

Turn down the contrast in the driver, then white will only 50% bright.

This is a problem with most monitors, the brightest, most reflective one in Best Buy sells to the most dummies.

You will need to also be verified, have an account for 30 days, etc at Dwolla.

You pick the "funding options", add funds, "Dwolla" in the drop-down menu, and then you will get text like:

Quote
You can send funds to:
Account number: 812-649-1010 (click here to send funds directly)
Account name: Mutum Sigillum LLC

You must include the following message: XXXXXXXX

NOTE: Your deposit may be delayed to up to 24 hours after your Dwolla transaction clears until Dwolla allows us to make this automated and due to more stringent AML requirements, all deposits are subject to a verification process.

There is a US$0.25 fee that you can either choose to pay yourself when sending funds, or we will deduct it from the received amount here.

You follow those instructions: log into Dwolla, and send funds to MtGox's Dwolla account number with a message including your code.
1699  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: DICEonCrack attacked? on: January 27, 2013, 05:24:00 AM
So I'm not sure what happened yet, but it looks like diceoncrack.com was caught in a major blockchain reorg, either due to a split or a double spend attack.

I initially believed it was an attack as the rolled back transactions were almost all on the lost wagers, but a closer look made me realize the rolled back tx for winning bets not only existed, but they actually were of a total value of close to the lost wager ones. If it was an attack, it didn't go too well.

We have a few protections against the double spends but there's only so much you can do when accepting 0 confirmation tx, so for now and until I get to the bottom of this bets are processed immediately but only paid out when there's at least 1 confirmation on them, sorry for the hassle.

You mean to say the win/lose status of the bets are only disclosed when there's at least one confirmation - that is the information needed to know whether to double-spend with better fees to erase any losses.

More like,

"This thread promises a bounty. A bounty it is not, for a bounty is awarded to the first person to complete the task." Dog the Bounty Hunter doesn't have to compete with other bounty hunters to see who got the best bail-jumper.

"This thread describes a contest. A contest it is not, for a contest has a winner. This contest has only losers, the people that spent their time creating intellectual property in exchange for nothing."

"This thread contains an offer of 1 BTC. If you can figure out how to get it paid, good luck to you."
