1721  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: DO NOT BUY GPUs to mine! You will not get your money back! on: May 14, 2013, 01:23:57 AM
last year, bitcoins were at around $5-$8 most of the summer.  even with current difficulties, the profit margin is higher right now than it was then.  so scrypt does alright, as the bots do their thing.   did litecoin drop in value about 10-15% since last difficulty change a day or so ago?   nobody wants litecoin, except to exchange it for bitcoins or some other currency

anyway, i said buying a GPU farm was dumb in early feb, when those first avalon asics shipped.. i was wrong.   if you bought w/ any clue as to what you were doing, you'll have a very good profit.  esp if you find the right time to sell those 5830's, 5870's, and 5970's that were selling used back then for about 50% of the value they do now

i also said it was foolish to pre-order this BFL crap last year, when bitcoins were at $7 or $8 and that you'd be better off just buying the currency itself (you wouldn't be pre-ordering if you didn't think the price was going up)

1722  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Help needed exhausting my rigs on: May 12, 2013, 12:44:43 AM
Yes I did see that thread but I can't really cut a hole in the ceiling.  I search the forums a lot and didn't find much HVAC info surprisingly.

I believe during the summer you want to exhaust outside and during the winter you want to exhaust to the cool attic.
do you only have that one window?

it's too small for how I vent room, but I guess you could buy some cheap window ac?

oh, nm, i read on

with two windows, why can't you just put a fan in one window, seal off the rest of that window, then vent out the second window?

Too sum things up. I'm going to need central AC on for my family to survive the summer. I'm trying to come up with a plan to efficiently exhaust the miners heat without wasting my AC and driving my electric bill even higher.

Wouldn't using a window fan in the non exhaust window be blowing hot outside air into the room?  I figured the best solution would to just simply exhaust the rig and hopefully my central AC keeps things cool but I know nothing about HVAC.

yeah, i live in texas, sometimes it's 110oF outside here, but i was still able to keep all my cards at or below 80oC all last summer (except for once when one of my 5970 fans busted and when i went in there it was at like 105oC, hashing away at 50mhash/100mhash, throttled etc)..  they only hit 80oC on the hottest days in the afternoon, most maxed out between 70-75.  you'll probably need to lower the voltage.   110oF is 43oC, which was a lot cooler than the cards were running at.   you'll want to make sure you have good PSUs or they'll either be incredibly inefficient or just die in high ambient temps

some of that hot air escapes into the house, but not a whole lot, assuming that the only entry point to the rest of the house is the door to the room (yeah, we can assume a few cracks in the ceiling etc).  you can buy (or make) something to seal off at least the bottom of a door.  some air will escape out the side unless you improvise on that, not that much though (if you have proper exhaust)

i only have one window, you have two, so just put the computers between the two windows, you dont need a fan on the second window.  use a piece of paper to determine how far to open it, likewise if your sealing job on the first window isnt so hot, you can use some paper or a napkin or something to make sure air isnt escaping from that window

i wouldn't get too complicated or spend a lot of money on same fancy setup, since it's unlikely you'll be running the GPUs for more than a few more months??  unless you're a believer in scrypt alt-currencies
1723  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: so my electric bill came in on: May 12, 2013, 12:04:39 AM
Hey guys, so my electric bill finally came in!

I had 5000 megahashes running for the entire month of April 2013.

March 2013 the electric bill was $180, April 2013 the electric bill was $360. Without factoring in heating differences in the weather and stuff like that, this eludes to a hardware mining overhead cost $170

is this good or bad, what are my kilowatt hours, and how would I calculate that?

mainly curious because I have sold off some of that cluster computer already, but plan to buy more hardware factoring in these variables

Assuming 100% uptime that's not bad.

$170 is 24 cents per hour; at .15 kwh (seems to be about average) that means you are pulling 1575 watts at the wall.

well, his math was wrong, so it should be $180, since he says he's not factoring in heating differences (sure as hell doesnt live in texas then, cause my differences would be in AC use)

$180 for 5000mhash is pretty cheap electricity, i would think.  but, then, I've always used cards with crap efficiency (5830, 5870, etc)

in regard to OP's plan to buy more hardware, to make it easy i'll disregard price fluctuations...  but be sure to take into consideration the upcoming 10-15% difficulty increase, and that all subsequent difficulty increases will likely be similar or higher than that.... and the decreasing value of your assets (the hardware you bought)
1724  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [700GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: May 11, 2013, 11:48:35 PM
I've been getting this today "GOT INCOMPLETE BLOCK FROM PEER"
Any clues???
It is normal and harmless when you restart node and download share chain.
I've done that a few times and my miner keeps telling me lost connection at " blah blah" when p2p hangs before it tells me got incomplete block.

p2p freezes says processing shares from blah blah, my cpu spikes to 100% (python), a minute or two later the incomplete message and then my miner is disconnected.

so you've never downloaded the complete share chain?

unless your p2pool is on a ramdrive and not backed up, you shouldnt be downloading the entire share chain every time you restart (unless it's been ~2 days since you last ran it)

I wanted to makes sure I've done what I'm supposed to do here. My Mhash/s are maxed out for my card, my latency is at or below  .1s. I am using cgminer and was told I should use the --fix-protocol command to long poll vs. using stratum, I wasn’t having any known issues using stratum. Does someone mind telling me why one would be better for me vs the other.

cgminer 3.1.0
p2pool 11.4
AMD 7770
Ubuntu 12.04 LTS

if you aren't having any problems with stratum, then don't change it

it could just be a problem with high latency connections

Well got the 2 cards installed, by themselves... one fucking word: NIGHTMARE!
Are fucking dummy plugs needed again for windows to show a fucking GUI for remote apps cuz it just fucking goes black and no mining, unless I plug a monitor in.
Powertune is fucking worthless, no matter what I set it too, cgminer just mines @ 925mhz
I used latest beta of AB....its a management nightmare.
Fuck, why dont these cards just work like the good ol 5xxx series.

Im on 13.4 cats, AB latest beta, 7 64bit.
Its horrible all around

My other mining machine, shit when tried to put my 5xxxx series all together on it...its giving me all sorts of crap now, cgminer crashing left and right, I have no idea wtf started possesing my machines, but Im PISSED!
=(

I guess the good news is, I have the 2 7870s @ 1125/300 1.13v and doin bout 503mh/s each, using right around 400watts from wall.
Who knows how long this will last tho ugh...

One of the 7870's is horrible at clocking / voltage, otherwise my volts would be as low as 1.111v or so...

delete the bin files

or you probably shouldnt have to, since you'd be using phatk on a 5xxx card and should be using poclbm or diablo on 7xxx

my 7870 is running at 1150 core 600 memory and getting 440mhash, default performance 2 voltage, which is 1.219.  it's stable up to at least 1200 core, but still doesn't come close to 500mhash.  i haven't tried past 1200.  this is using cgminer with the diablo kernel, 256 worksize, 1 vector.  messing around with intensity doesn't yield much past 8.  i'm puzzled as to how one can get 500mhash at 1125/300

anyway, it's an msi.  someone posted some review on newegg about how he had flames shooting out the back.  i guess i can believe it, 'cause this card is a pos.

Is yours a tahiti LE? ( has 1536 shaders) many 7870's are just pitcairn (I think it is), (1280) shaders...
Im kinda dissappointed in the power effeciency, but I guess its too be expected from a GPU thats got 1/4 of its shaders disabled.
Today will be interesting to see what temps it hits during daytime(80-90F) expected today. Overnight it was 50F and temps were around 55C @ 3000RPM

ah, that would be it.  yeah, it's not a tahiti LE.  it's a pitcairn, 1280 shaders.  best I can do is around 475mhash, and that's pushing it too far, really.  420mhash is realistic.  the card runs too hot as is.

not worth returning either (even if I could, heh), since I already sold the games + mailed in the rebate.  i'll probably look for another 7850 or maybe get in on one of those 7950 specials.... sure as hell don't want to use this 7870 as my 'gaming' card...  sitting next to an oven sucks

Would anybody be interested in purchasing a prebuilt mining rig, capable of 2500kh/s for ~$1600?  I don't have anything ready right now; I am just trying to get a feel for the market.

what is it composed of?  i don't do scrypt
1733  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: WTS: 2x 5850 & 1x 5830 on: May 09, 2013, 09:06:55 AM
It's not too low, I take my regular buy prices. 70$ = 5830 80$ = 5850 100$ = 5870. 10-15$ shipping and it's a done deal. That's all I have ever bought at.

$80 for 5850 and $100 for 5870, I don't think I've ever seen them that cheap.

the $70 for a 5830 is reasonable

1735  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: P2Pool Server List on: May 09, 2013, 02:37:58 AM
#2, not sure.  Also I don't think that'd be incentive enough to risk p2pool orphans with.

#1 and #3, I think would cause problems for people using p2pool with high latency.

The current reward for solving a share is .5%, right?  So .125 (+ some small bit from transaction fees)?  Average block has maybe .2 to .5 in transaction fees?  I still just think changing the reward to the transactions is the best way to solve the problem.

... and it can be changed if and when transaction fees become a more significant portion of blocks (when reward drops to 12.5, or some other event)

I don't see why ppl complain about that
1736  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [700GH/s] p2pool: Decentralized, DoS-resistant, Hop-Proof pool on: May 09, 2013, 02:23:11 AM
Hi, all:
I'm using p2pool with cgminer. local hashrate is 1Gh/s show in p2pool windows, but p2pool.info only show 600Mh/s for my address!? Is this a network delay?
Thank you.

it means you either haven't mined for a whole day, you've been unlucky, your efficiency is low

or some combo of those three
1737  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: P2Pool Server List on: May 08, 2013, 08:47:14 PM
...
Now you are just playing dumb. Normal pools have much more tolerance for bitcoind latencies: their target is a 10mn window: a latency of ~0.2-0.5s instead of 0.01s during which orphan blocks can be produced is nothing for them. P2Pool is 60 times faster with a target of 10s: orphan shares produced for 0.2-0.5s instead of 0.01s matters for the miners.

Bitcoind getblocktemplate interface slows down with the number of transactions to include in a block, period. This is only an implementation choice, period. Arguing against these facts is just ignoring reality and making you look like a fool.
What has that to do with orphans?

If you want to put the blame on p2pool users instead of the slow bitcoin RPC interface you might want to learn what an orphaned share in P2Pool is and what its consequences are. You can read the guide in my signature to understand this and related information about P2Pool.

The actual risk of having an orphan is only your bitcoind.

Not relevant to the problem some p2pool miners try to solve by lowering their block size.
So what you are trying to tell me is that it's not orphan blocks that you are trying to reduce but orphan shares in the p2pool share-chain?
Seriously?
It's even worse?
You are trying to increase your share count at the detriment of the bitcoin network?

exactly - this is the problem. Like I just posted above, there is no financial incentive for a single p2pool user to include transactions in their p2pool share.
It's game theory: if everyone includes transactions, everyone wins. But if one person chooses to make zero transaction p2pool shares, and everyone else chooses to make normal shares - the zero transaction share person wins.

EDIT: this is selfish, but it is the way it is. Pools do have a financial incentive to include transactions since transaction fees offset the increase in orphan rate. p2pool nodes, however, do not see the transaction fees they include (but only a tiny fraction of the fees), so there is more of an incentive to have lower latency than higher transaction fees.

that's not true, either.   people with better systems win out in the 'everyone includes every transaction' theoretical.

i'll throw this out there:  people saying to include all these transactions are being greedy.  you want to increase your own "efficiency" rate at the expense of people with slower systems.  for someone to have >100%, someone else has to have <100%
1738  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: PowerColor 7870 Myst Edition Tahiti LE 511MH/s 72C on: May 07, 2013, 04:38:43 PM
i have ram set at 150mhz, after checking it shows its actually at 1361mhz when i bitcoin mine.

So my question to you is how exactly do i lower my ram to 150mhz?  what utility?  what flags?  Suggesting an action is good, but I need to know how to lower my memory mhz more.  This card can hit 5.5ghz to 6ghz memory.

MSI Afterburner:   http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

You'll need to close the program and reopen it after changing the memory clock to the lowest in order to lower it further.

I run all of my 7000 series cards at 300MHz and get little to no change in hash rate.  If you want to further increase your Mh/s, try CGMiner and the following settings:

Code:
"intensity" : "7",
"vectors" : "1",
"worksize" : "256",
"kernel" : "diablo",

yes, i remember I used to do this with some problematic 5830's..  (well, I'd switch between one and another if they werent synchronized & it'd then allow me to lower the memory lower)

but with my MSI 7850 and 7870, the lowest it'll go is 600 in afterburner.. i can quit and reload and it's still 600.  ulps is disabled, 'extend official overclocking limits' is checked, powerplay is disabled, config file is changed

[ATIADLHAL]
UnofficialOverclockingEULA   = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
UnofficialOverclockingMode   = 2

and i've tried trixx, barelyclocked, gputweak, ... everything but RBE basically

i know it's possible, since it comes with 2 performance levels, and the 1st performance level is 150 memory 300 core

it's all a bit puzzling

anyway, the 7850, i can run at 1100-600 and it still doesnt go above 55oC

the 7870 is problematic
