1821  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Proposed Bitcoin Nomenclature on: May 15, 2011, 05:21:29 PM
1.00000000 = 1 BTC = 1 Bitcoin
0.10000000 = .1 BTC = simply .1 Bitcoins, or 1/10th of a Bitcoin
0.01000000 = .01 BTC = 1 Bitcent
0.00100000 = 1 mBTC = 1 milliBit, or whatever the result of this thread is
0.00010000 = 1 nBTC = 1 nanoBit
0.00001000 = 1 pBTC = 1 planckBit, or 1 pBit
0.00000100 = 1 hBTC = 1 hadronBit, or hadroBit, or 1 hBit
0.00000010 = 1 qBTC = 1 quarkBit, or 1 qBit
0.00000001 = 1 sBTC = 1 Satoshi

Here's my proposed breakdown of Bitcoin currency. I've been giving this some thought ever since I came across Bitcoins and figured now was a good time to get some feedback and see if my arbitrary names will catch on.
1822  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 135 BTC Stolen from my Deepbit account!!!!!!!! on: May 14, 2011, 03:20:55 PM
The only people who knew my password,  were myself,  and a couple of other employees at MemoryDealers, and all of them say they did not change anything.

Well, that's a giant red flag. An employee realizing it would be very hard to track might have prompted the theft.

Even if they are all completely honest and trustworthy, the chance that someone isn't 100% vigilant in protecting the info rises exponentially with every person.
1823  Economy / Economics / Re: What are all these coins being spent on? on: May 14, 2011, 01:18:50 AM
I launched BitBrew.net, let's see, a grand total of 4 days ago and I've had three sales so far. I'd say that's pretty good considering I only have one product at the moment and I've spent less than 2 BTC on advertising in addition to promoting the site a bit here on these forums. I've also had several people express interest in whole beans, which I'll be adding soon (I'd offer them for sale now, but would rather wait until I actually have them in my hands before accepting payment), so I'm confident sales will continue to grow as my selection does.

Another $20 Starbucks eCard up for auction! Last one went for 2 BTC.

edd, you are forgetting tx fees - it could pay for itself FOREVER

Yes and no. I did forget about the possibility of providing that service, but I think its practicality will wane as its distance from us increases. Even at light speed, it will eventually be out of range. Unless you can solve the FTL problem.

noiseless machines plugged into solar panels

...in high orbit around the Earth

or we could even try using solar sail
+1

Space exploration could pay for itself. At least until all bitcoins have been mined.
1827  Other / Obsolete (selling) / Re: Buy coffee with Bitcoins at BitBrew.net on: May 12, 2011, 08:53:31 PM
Bookmarked. Thanks for sharing and taking part in the BTC market.

+1 on whole bean request -- I'll make a purchase once they arrive. Also think you should remove the login box and move at least the cart display to the right where it (almost?) always is. Otherwise, site design is very slick. Good luck!

The login box was indeed superfluous, so it's gone. Does the sidebar being on the left really matter?
1828  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin is not used as money anymore on: May 12, 2011, 06:31:26 PM
Thing is, most of the things you can buy with BTC is overpriced unless you are in the US

The problem is that there are a minuscule number of merchants compared to potential customers right now. And, since physical goods can't be sent over the internet, consumers must pay shipping costs if they want to buy a product from someone outside their area. As the number of bitcoin businesses grows, however, we'll see more who are able to tap into their local market.

I like the idea, and may order from you soon but just as a suggestion I think you need to make your page a little more appealing. Put some pictures of tasty ground coffee beans, explain the flavor of the specific bean... something right away to at least give me an idea of what I'm buying.

Suggestions implemented!

I'll continue to tweak the site as time permits.

It's nice to have a new coffee merchant, the old one had an attitude.

Yeah, I hear too much coffee can do that to some people.

I'm dying, that was great.

Where did it come from?

Someone linked to it at BTCBubble and I stole it. Wink

Do you sell any whole beans? I rather grind them at home.

Coming soon!

The huge jump in BTC/USD exchange wasn't the only factor. I'm actually taking a loss right now, but I have several reasons for doing so:

  • I'm trying to build a solid customer base and figure cheap prices for premium goods is one way to do it.
  • I'm optimistic that the bitcoins I receive will continue to increase in value.
  • I figure it's better PR to adjust prices as rarely as possible and this should give me some time before it's necessary to do it again (but I wouldn't mind continuous BTC growth!).

A small problem was experienced today during a very short window of time which may have caused an order confirmation email to get lost. If you did not receive a confirmation email for your order, please send me a message via our contact page so that you may track and confirm your order.

Thanks and I promise not to bump my own thread anymore.

This volatile market sure makes it difficult for a merchant to stay competitive.  Grin

Price of coffee reduced.
1834  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Bubble Game (with jackpot) on: May 10, 2011, 06:34:42 PM
I'm clueless when it comes to this game and don't get the basics even after reading the FAQ. I just spent 2BTC on 20 bubbles at 0.1 BTC each and 0.60 BTC on two bubbles at 0.30 BTC. What exactly happens now?

Now you have bubbles in the game, with whatever info you put in them, and you can find it in the big huge table. If nobody bets after you, and the timer runs out, you win the jackpot. If enough people bet after you that you're pushed off the main page, you receive double what you paid for each. If neither of these happen, and the timer runs out, you will lose your money.

Almost right. You don't win double your bet, only 150%.

Site launch today (tonight in my part of the world). Starting with some organic Guatemalan coffee, ground, for 2.95 BTC per pound. Here's the best part: Shipping within the 48 contiguous United States Included!

Visit BitBew.net to order.

Suggestions and feedback welcome here.
1836  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Bitcoin Bubble Game (with jackpot) on: May 09, 2011, 07:24:33 PM
Seemly bubble game popularity is decreasing...

I disagree... the first round had fewer participants, mostly the same ads over and over again.

This round has a wider variety of ads and one-liners.

I agree. I believe some of us have just become more familiar with the intricacies of the game, as well as more conservative, thus extending the time between bubble purchases.

Sorry, BioMike, I guess I'm a little dense; where does this code go?
1838  Economy / Marketplace / Help needed finishing shopping cart integration on: May 07, 2011, 04:08:20 PM
I've got just about everything set up for my site to accepts bitcoins as payment but I'd like to customize my shopping cart a bit more. I'm not a developer, so I need a bit of assistance configuring some variables and sending data to the appropriate places. Right now, I have the MyBitcoin SCI working fine but only using one set price for each generated button. How do I get it to change the amount based on the total in my customers' shopping carts?

I'll bid 11 BTC.
1840  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The real bitcoin value on: May 02, 2011, 11:39:58 PM
I ran a small business for years and I don't see bitcoins as that daunting. Yes, one could follow the currently volatile market and adjust prices accordingly, or one could do what retail businesses have always done - watch your competitors' prices and patterns in your sales. If sales suddenly drop, I know that either someone else is offering a greater value (which, of course, may or may not be only a perceived increase), or other economic factors are influencing the demand. Either way, a successful business adjusts as necessary or rides out the slump.
