In case people haven't noticed, he is currently playing a character.

So is the OP of this thread. Wink

Wouldn't surprise me. Makes me wonder how many of the members are working together...

All of them. We are all just part of the one hive mind which controls everything we do!

Feels good to sit 100% fiat until the sleeping dragon awakes. I'm guessing selling should resume in about 3 hours.

What if they buy?

+1 I really don't think people have been thinking enough about the pressure on the Chinese to BUY. Imagine if suddenly you realised you might have more difficulty in getting money to your exchange in the near future, and that this might only become more and more difficult? What would you do?

Whatever your masters tell you to do! Wink

There is an overstock of coins right now. Cheesy

It's going to be interesting to find out if overstock are able to hedge against the volatility.
If they are able to, then maybe there's hope for a larger adoption of bitcoin.
If not, and they end up with a significant loss, instead of the small gains they expected, the signal will be bearish.

You are aware they are selling their coins, right?

Is the selling instant? Don't they have to transfer the coins, and get the desired price, which may take some time?
In the meantime, during a sell-off, the price could drop 10% and they would end up with a 10% fiat loss.

It's all done by the payment processor. Overstock gets (in fiat) exactly what they would get if they sold the item for fiat.

Edit: Actually they get slightly more thanks to reduced fees of the Bitcoin payment processor.

Proudhon Proudhno has won the internet.
1866  Economy / Speculation / Re: Do we know why the price is dropping? on: January 17, 2014, 08:51:54 PM
FBI will likely be selling $25M of coins sometime soon.

how do they know the password to unlock the wallet ?

$5 wrench.

Apparently DPR didn't take the proper precautions needed to protect his stash.
1867  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: January 17, 2014, 08:03:10 PM
First China, then India, and now Russia. Before long, half of humanity will be excluded from Bitcoin.

I'm afraid many of us might be imprisoned for Bitcoin. Be safe.

One is only "excluded" from Bitcoin if one chooses to "exclude" oneself.

In other words: Obey your masters or else! Wink

Isn't this precisely why Bitcoin was created in the first place? It allows an individual to step outside the traditional, controlled methods of transferring value.
1868  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Woah, block solved in 20 seconds by Slush's pool. on: January 17, 2014, 07:38:07 PM
20 seconds? I've seen blocks a few seconds apart in the past.

Every block gets solved in 20 seconds.  Think I am wrong?  You don't understand math.

For each block, go to a moment in time 20 seconds prior to its solution.  At that moment, the network has accomplished zero progress on the impending solution.  However, in the coming 20 seconds - it finds a solution.

A solution doesn't get easier as time passes doesn't depend upon.  The network doesn't advance and close in on a solution as the clock ticks.

The same error in statistics is made for those people who think that 10 rolls of a die without getting a '6' increases the chance that a '6' will come next.  It doesn't.  The chance of rolling a '6' is the same whether or not 10 non-'6's occurred previously.

The state of the miners 20 seconds prior to a solution is identical to the state of miners which have been working for one hour.  Thus, the probability that a solution will come in 20 seconds is identical for the case where a solution was just found, and for when the miners have been working a long time.  Miners having been working a long time do not increase the probability that a solution will come in the next 20 seconds.  Thus, every block was solved in 20 seconds - it is just 20 seconds prior to the moment the solution came.

Idiots - find it incredible that a block was solved in 20 seconds - they all are.

Huh?

I understand that there is no progress on the proof of work...

That doesn't change the fact that sometimes there is 1 minute between blocks and sometimes there is 1 hour between blocks...

We weren't talking about how long it took the device to find the solution which happened to be the correct one for the next block. We were talking about the length of time between blocks.
1869  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time to dump BTC now I say... on: January 17, 2014, 07:11:18 PM
We tried to warm many users. BTC was $850 1/15/14 now $65 cheaper and next week another $100 cheaper. Buy the dip sure but sometimes you gotta cut losses and rebuy lower (if you have no fiat on exchange)  to lower your cost average. Some who listened just lowered their cost average by $65 in just 2 days. Not bad eh?

What is your target for the bottom?
1870  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: stop mining at ghash.io you FUCKTARDS on: January 17, 2014, 07:10:31 PM
Miners don't have the incentive to undermine peoples' trust in Bitcoin.

Well... not until JPMorgan Chase decides to provide the incentive for a large pool operator to attack Bitcoin....

Wink

Miners can find out easily and will complain loudly, "I found a block, but my node doesn't even see it on the network! Something fishy must be going on with the pool!"

I think you put too much faith in your typical hasher...

Should an attack come from centralization of the hashing power, it's damage will already be done before the miners can react. This is why a proactive approach is preferred (do not centralize the hashing power).
1871  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: No payout ever received with p2pool? on: January 17, 2014, 07:06:14 PM
p2pool is broken shit.  Go mine on a proper pool.  Simple as that.

PEBKAC.

OP, perhaps some light reading will help you understand P2Pool better.

1873  Economy / Speculation / Re: POLL - Capitulation ahead? on: January 17, 2014, 06:57:35 PM
Capitulation will be at $0.000001

How much are you willing to bet on that?

I don't bet, I calculate.

OK!

Trust issues.

Anyone who sold at the OP is sitting on some nice paper gains at the moment! Now we wait for that buy signal!

So you don't trust Bitfinex to actually debit my account of the 'inevitable' losses that I wish to inflict upon myself by foolishly shorting Bitcoin?

Not at all. Not even in the slightest. They could disappear tomorrow for all I know.
1876  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time to dump BTC now I say... on: January 17, 2014, 06:46:09 PM
By the time I did enter into Bitcoin as a speculator, Bitcoin had been transformed from an anarachistic challenge to the financial status quo, to the crypto spawn of Satan, fuelled by cut-throat greed and delusions of avarice.

So no, I no longer care or 'believe' in Bitcoin. Bitcoin has become what the community who has adopted has made it.

Well yeah, if all you do is hang out in the speculation sub forum, all you are going to hear is greedy bastards talking their book. Duh!

Bitcoin is doing just fine. There have not been any protocol changes which has turned it into the "financial status quo". Anyone is free to use Bitcoin as they see fit. The tool does not choose it's users.
1877  Economy / Speculation / Re: Time to dump BTC now I say... on: January 17, 2014, 06:35:37 PM
Then why not put your Bitcoins to work by lending them out to short-sellers?

Trust issues.

1878  Other / Off-topic / Re: I have to survive.. on: January 17, 2014, 06:31:19 PM
I believe i know what he means. Having your wealth at a bank account makes pretty sure that your relatives will get the money when you die for some reason. If you have a wallet at your pc then... thats a different thing. They have to know that you have the wallet, they need to know the password or private key. So you need to give these details to someone... otherwise your bitcoins will be lost for everyone. When you dont have someone you really trust you have a big problem since you dont want to log into your wallet one day and your coins are gone. Will you give the private key to a lawyer instead? If he is using it how will you prove it? And and and... Bitcoins have some problems one has to think about. Of course only if you care and dont want that your "riches" are landing in the rubbish or on ebay.
I meant this
solution isn't so obvious as people think, if one thinks  about it  deeper
I struggle in my mind with idea that my 'I have to survive' philosophy is  best at this point

Look at M of N paper backups and devise a scheme from there.

Split the pieces among your family member and put a required piece in your will. None of them will be able to recreate the wallet and access the funds alone. Anyone who is able to access the will won't be able to recreate the wallet without the pieces from the family members. You can, of course, elaborate on this as much as you like.
1879  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: U.S. announces forfeiture of $28 million of bitcoins belonging to Silk Road on: January 16, 2014, 10:31:44 PM
Free coins to everyone on bitcointalk.org?

Every single one should be donated to charities. Not only would that get mass adoption by charities of bitcoin but it wuld help millions of people even if in just a small way.

Unfortunately the government isn't in the business of helping people.
1880  Economy / Speculation / Re: Market Impact from a MTGox collapse on: January 16, 2014, 10:30:15 PM
If mtgox closes shop and runs Bitcoins are worthless.

LOL. EM you are one crazy dude.
