I have a lame situation and need advise. I've replaced the power supply in my S2 because it was shutting off all the time. However, I want to repurpose this enermax for a mid-range gaming PC. How do I go about doing that since there are no peripheral cables?

Buy PCI-E cables in a store, like microcenter
http://www.microcenter.com/product/318756/PCI_Express_6-pin_to_2__PCI_Express_20_8-pin_(62-pin)_Adapter

be cautious of that cable. i had the same sort of ATX->dual PCIe and it was marked with 18awg but caught fire in under a minute of operation. disassembly showed what looked like 20awg or 22awg flimsy wires. Its not the sort of component that is meant for 300+ watts

1882  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Antminer S1 Sales open] Price changes daily, now 0.422 BTC for 180GH/s on: May 26, 2014, 11:36:04 AM
BTC value has increased about 20% the last week, why did the price not drop by that percentage in btc?

I calculated over and over again, with kwh @ 0.27€ and diff increase 15%, the S1 will never ever make the btc back you invested if I have to pay monthly the electricity from mined btc.

What did I wrong? Why should someone buy S1, at least in germany it's just stupid?

your power cost is almost 3x what i pay in Ontario, Canada ($0.15/kwh CAD). thats the most significant reason your calculatiuons show no profit
1883  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [GUIDE] Undervolt antminer s1 [1.19W/GH at the wall] on: May 25, 2014, 02:58:04 PM
Here's a closeup of my Antminer.

1 - As I've understood the R66 transistor is where I should add pencil graphite (and there are 16 of these albeit with different numbers).
2 - It has kind of two blank edges and the middle is matte dark gray. Does it matter where I apply the graphite?
3 - What happens if I apply too much? Will only the HW error increase, or can the hardware get permanent damage?
4 - What happens if I don't apply enough?
5 - It should be applied when the miner is off, right? Should I do all 16 at the same time?
6 - Is it necessary to use a voltmeter? Can the measure be made when the antminer is off? If I don't use the meter, is there another way to determine if the adequate amount of graphite has been applied?

1 - Yes
2 - Not really - so long as you join the two ends.
3 - You erase and try again.
4 - You put more on.
5 - Yes
6 - Absolutely.  It is impossible to apply this mod without a voltmeter.  You can measure the ohms when the miner is off to determine if you put on enough or too much.

to clarify number 6: a multimeter is used to check the resistance (3.4-3.5 Kohm). Measure after each pencil mod.

checking the voltage isnt *really* needed for each chip secton - if all the resistances are the same checking the voltage in one section should mean all the other sections are the same voltage.
1884  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Announcement: Bitmain launches AntMiner solution, 0.68 J/GH on chip on: May 25, 2014, 02:48:52 PM
New price for AntMiner S2 1 TH/s Miner Batch 4: 2309 USD each one, shipping cost included.

if you are going to raise the USD price because USD/BTC rose, perhaps pricing in BTC would be best
1885  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Save 50% on PSU Costs w/ Gigampz: Breakout Board for DPS-800GBA Server PSU on: May 25, 2014, 03:59:58 AM
Anyone have a pic of what this breakout board looks like with 4 6-Pin PCIe cables screwed in?  Looks like you will have to have multiple wires in each connector hole?

I use 2x sets of the 16AWG pcie wires connected to the gigampz, then a good thick pcie y-adapter on each to split to a total of 4 pcie 6-pins.

The connectors on the board may fit more wires at thinner gauges but not at 16awg.

This is the splitter I use:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BBIQTBO/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=390957&creativeASIN=B00BBIQTBO&linkCode=as2&tag=jedislair-20&linkId=MCSBAMQZNHZKWQ2U

Yeah, the tinned 16awg ends make it very tough to fit two 16awg wires in a slot together. An option around this is to cut off the doldered tip and strip a new 5mm of exposed wire, which makes twisting and inserting two wires much easier
1886  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: BITMAIN Antminer support and OverClocking thread on: May 25, 2014, 03:45:28 AM
Does any one knows the logic behind the Hex values for the frequencies in the S1 miners? I understand Hex #s and little-endian and big-endian notation, but it still does not make sense to me. E.g. the jump from 200 to 250 to 300 adds x0200 to the Hex value, so they go from x0781 to x0981 to x0b81. Logic indicates that the jump to 350 should require a value of x0d81 instead of x4e81.

Thanks

FM

there is documentation in the github manuals for the U1 usb device. It relies on a weird mathematical method of several combined binary strings from the hex code.  Once sorted out its *relatively* straight forward to calculat eany frequency you want, to about 1.75MHz precision
1887  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: First batch production of R-BOX has shipped out,32-37GH/S,$89 on: May 24, 2014, 08:51:28 PM
So, $2.40 per Gh/s. Doesn't include PSU and host controller or shipping?
Just curious... what is the currently expected, going rate for $/GH?

$1/GH/2W
or
$2/GH/1W   (personally i think $1.50/GH/W would be fair for products like the SP10 and S2)
1888  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Solution to deal with heat from mining rigs on: May 24, 2014, 06:46:11 PM
The BitRack 3 pumps out 32 KW BTU, which allows the mining rigs to run at optimal temperature and therefore mine more coins.  To my knowledge there really isn't anything else on the market that cools that much power, unless you want to go with the heat exchanger route, which we offer as well.  For most mining conditions this is the best fit.

I saw a 12K and 19K coolers that reauire a 40A total circuitry (so about 7kW if following load and safe use guidelines). 32K BTU is capable of only ~10kW of heat being cooled though, correct (for efficient A/C 1w of heat removed = 3-4 BTU)?

The design does not strike me as ideally as using a regular rack packed full of hardware, which a lot of DC's seem able to handle up to 20kW from a rack
1889  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Custom Built Mining Shed on: May 24, 2014, 06:39:20 PM
So you have 8 antminers right now (~3.2kW) and he 15,000 BTU ac unit doesnt quite cut it? (15000 BTC should suffice for ~3.5kW). How do you intend to add more miners?

Im faced with a similar problem with the coming canadian summer (still hot enough that there will be a few 30C heatwaves), and am unsure whether to go with an air conditioned location (that will require a 100,000BTC A/C if not larger) or to form enough ventilation that i might just have to deal with 30C intake temperatures and a crontab log to underclock everything during the heat of the day.

If you were doing the shed over again, what would you change?

would you make it smaller / would you triple the number of ventilation holes and run on pure airflow  /  would a window-mount AC be more efficient?
and, would having the ac on an inline airflow with all the wasteheat dumped outside prove more efficient than cooling the entire cold side of the shed?

I need a good plan to handle 10kW (if not 25kW) of heat

Here is the audio from the hearing yesterday:

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/7804267/hashfast%20hearing%20federal%20bankruptcy%205.23.2014.mp3

Edit: I highly recommend following the IceDrill thread as well as the HF thread in Hardware. Came across this very astute comment:

Having listened to the recording it seems to look like a move to a voluntary Chapter 11.

It looks like the judge has set that there will be 'protections' put in place until then and the people seeking relief will get relief. Very positive for the creditors and debtor I think.

40,000 chips in hand at HF from the records.

The $ per Gh/s worth less each day on the HF chips. The sharks are circling and it doesn't matter no one is going to pay top dollar now for anything given the competition. You won't get a lot for these without a board, and a team that can build them. You have competition and the longer sales take the LESS everyone is going to get. Find someone that can run production is your only hope to recover anything for creditors.

$1 Gh/s is what AM is selling them there might be a floor you want... but every week you delay the floor will be dropping out from under you. All these parties are going to have to get together and FIX this fast or you are all screwed.

See you on Wednesday.

Note the bold. I think VMC has a very solid position in this mess. I would love to see Ken assist in recovering something for these guys. I also don't mind guaranteed business. Cheesy

$1/GH at chip level just wont cut it. It has to be about $0.50/GH so that by the time it takes 2 weeks for someone to create a PCB (~$0.10/GH) and buy parts/assembly (~$0.30/GH) and includes packaging/shipping costs (~$0.20/GH) you have a device that uses >1w/GH and is $1.10/GH NOT COUNTING ANY PROFIT MARGINS. And if $1.75/GH/W is the fair price right now then it means in two weeks that will be <$/1.50/GH/W

and that is assuming the new asicminer chips dont force a tighter price war than there is already. It also assumes people feel safe using the VMC website, which....well.... the homepage is horrendous.
1891  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: AntMiner S2 1TH/s Miner Batch 4, Price changes daily, now 2259 USD for 1TH/s on: May 24, 2014, 06:17:51 PM
Even with the coupon these S2s are still over 3.5 BTC. For 1TH/s that's over the top.

We need a step change again here bitmain (like you did with the S1). Bring these down to 2.5 BTC and start selling a pile of them.

My guess is they are waiting for the coupons to run out at the end of the month before doing a big price drop. They don't want to drop the price to say $1650 and then have people asking for $400 off that.

the other factor is the groupbuy shipping monday at $1650. if bitmain dropped pricing (with coupon) below that the groupbuy would form a riot.

I expect once the GB ships bitmain will drop to ~$2000 until the coupons expire, then down to ~$1400 to stay competitive
1892  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Save 50% on PSU Costs w/ Gigampz: Breakout Board for DPS-800GBA Server PSU on: May 24, 2014, 06:04:52 PM
I'm actually using Klondike_bar's PCI-E 16AWG wires with my Gigampz adapters+PSUs for most of my S1's.  They work great together and make for a nice and less bulky power setup. I put two S1's per each Gigampz at 230v, but I did have to use thick PCI-e splitters/y-adapters as well.

Cheap, easy to setup and Pete's a great guy to deal with.

nice setup! how are you cooling that ~4.5kW and where are you located? Im trying to figure out how i can grow my mining operation with a second location that is summer-compatible and unsure if lots of airflow will suffice or if i need a significant AC (for 15kW+)

another tip: try flipping your stacks around and pushing them base-to-base in cubes of 4. It will prevent hot air 'leaking' out downwards from the heatsink and slightly improve the overall airflow of the units. (3x2 stacks also work nicely)

I sell similar cables for bare ends -> PCIe a little cheaper.  They are 30cm long and 16AWG to prevent any burning incidents if using with high-draw equipment (>300w/PCI)

1895  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Spondoolies-Tech - Best W/GH/s ratio - Shipping from stock on: May 23, 2014, 11:30:51 PM

I talked to a DC in Iceland and they gave me a price of 95 EUR per kW per month. That comes out to about the same price.
Last quote i got was 78 €/kw for small customers, ofcourse this only gets cheap if you order multiple racks (ideally a whole DC container, then they can give you all the cooling you want)

Let's start working some details with them and then let's start a Group Buy for hosting. I am sure that there are a lot of small miners in Europe who would love to colocate their rigs if they will have nice price/kw.

Excellent! Strength in numbers. I like it

(Let me know if you need help)

Thank you for the support!

Collider how would you feel contacting the DC again and start discussing some terms?

@DevonMiner my August SP30 units will be hosted in the WA DC. Don't like it? Or just want a DC that is closer to home?

@bobsag3 keep us updated while we wait for some prices

Its tricky I've been looking for colo for around 6 months, and there are stirrings of interest.

bobsag3 has the right idea really, build your own, forget about all that raised floor, hot/cold aisles, 47U APC racks, redundant diesel generators etc etc. This bitcoin stuff is short term. You just need a well ventilated warehouse with decent aircon and flow. Get industrial shelving to put the miners on and make sure you have enough electricity to keep it going.

From humble beginnings they have come a long way.
Then:
Now:

+1. colocation is expensive as hell. who cares if bitcoin miners lose power or ethernet for a minute here and there - pretty much every single ASIC is capable of rebooting/reconnecting and theres only a few minutes of lost hashrate - compared to the massive premiums of diesel generators and massive battery banks.

how are people planning to handle summertime in these small DIY warehourses? AC adds about 30% to your power (IIRC?), so ideally outside airflow would be cheaper but extremely limited when the temperatures outside get above 25 C (~80F)

I have an obscene number of S1 and S2 coupons available that i likely will not use this month - feel free to PM me with an offer if you want some, i would be happy to bundle 10 or more together for virtually no charge
1897  Economy / Securities / Re: [ActiveMining] Official Shareholder Discussion Thread [Moderated] on: May 23, 2014, 12:42:09 PM
I don't buy the broken AC excuse. How can they be limited at 80th when the plan was to have the farm 250th +?

Presuming the 3rd AC is completely fubar, can he not buy another one?

They are missing out on $10k per week they don't fix that AC.

Also why do they even need an AC if these are water cooled?

Thermodynamics.  The water cooled systems use air fans to cool the water by blowing air across a radiator like in a car.  If the air is too hot the water can't be cooled enough by the fans.  Imagine a car sitting in a traffic jam in the summer and overheating.  The radiator fan is blowing like mad but it can't circulate cool air until it starts driving forward.  In our case the moving car is equivalent to switching on the AC.

So what's your theory Jim?  Are you suggesting that Ken is running 240TH but has directed the bitcoin to a hidden address?

Why can't ken just put a giant radiator or two outdoors?

I'm not suggesting ken has 250th but the AC excuse doesn't check out. He should know that time is crucial in bitcoin mining.

outdoor radiator does not make sense unless you wanted an obscene water cooling solution that combines all the units in a DIY system rather than a proven corsair system. The way he is doing it is *mostly* right.

this AC being down is a rediculous excuse, true or not. No hardware has been added in over a week, and the hashrate is only 80TH when it was supposed to be 170TH as of 6 days ago.  There is no way he will get past 120TH even with the third AC

Really, I made a mistake and said 170 TH, but it should have been 100 TH by the end of April.  We are at 80% of that, it does look like the AC can only support about 130-150 TH with the third AC running.  That AC should be fixed this week.  The 800 TH was based on the power available and was my estimate.  We really did not know what the AC could support, but the DC had 3 massive AC units.

The AC was mixed 10 days ago - and in that timespan only ~12TH was added.     http://eligius.st/~wizkid057/newstats/userstats.php/1DJpsvnM7xTnQbWEhLYyCyfxQyxwupEzCa  (93TH and a lot of outages and hardware going on/offline)

When will the DC reach 130-150TH?

If the market is at 2usd / gh then why are we ending up with units selling at 1.5?

Thise chips are priced too Damn low.

$2/GH is overpriced. The S1 was about $1/gh (until BTC rose and its now ~$1.3).   Personally, I cant justify 1w/GH hardware at any price over $1.70, and 2w/GH at $1.10

If you can find.

1. A commercial lease that has electricity included.
2. Several 15 amp circuits. ( I figure 1TH/s per circuit.)

I'm in !

Our residential lease, electricity included; could hold 4Th/s (if nobody lived here), at a cost of $200 per TH/s.

'hydro included' makes the assumption that a reasonable person would use a relatively low, or appropriate for common occupants, amount of power. The first bill that comes through with 3-5x the electricity costs they anticipated will send the landlord to you requesting a modification of the lease. (if you refuse you could likely be evicted for purposely misleading or failing to inform the landlord of your uncommon usage that would force an unfair cost burden on the landlord.

If you had water included, it doesnt mean you can start  making thousands of water bottles purposely knowing that the outrageous water consumption costs more than the rent.
