1901  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How to safely store big amounts of BTC? on: July 25, 2019, 01:00:04 AM
You remembered your 12 or 24 phrase by heart?  That is insane.  Even 12 words is too hard.  So you never wrote it down on paper?

Also where do you all keep your private key seeds for your hardware wallet?  That should be the bigger question here.  Because if you buy the ledger nano s or trezor, you have hardware wallet and protection against hackers/malware.

Do you break the private key of 12 or 24 words into 2 parts?  Do you keep 2 or even 3 copies?  Do you keep them inside house or apartment?  Of course if there are things like fire or etc, then what is your backup?  Its like you need 2 backup places?  Such as maybe keep your private key in your house or apartment and break it down in a few parts?  Then break it into 2 parts and put it into 2 different safety deposit boxes?  That way if a thief got access to one deposit box, well it would be very hard to get to the other one?  I heard of safe deposit boxes getting drilled ... but if you have it in 2 different boxes or even 3... then that should be safe?
1902  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Need help updating old Ledger Nano S firmware 1.2 on: July 25, 2019, 12:41:55 AM
tryninja thanks.

It seem to updated.

When i remove and then connect the nano ledger s back to my laptop, the first message on the nano ledger s it tells me is to install apps and follow the instructions from start.ledger.... then it goes to settings where im at now.  This is from the nano ledger screen itself.

Can you confirm this is the message they receive after doing the firmware update?  I had mentioned i did not know if i saw this message earlier on my ledger live or nano ledger but its the nano ledger itself.

Thanks.
1903  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How do you store your private keys on: July 25, 2019, 12:37:21 AM
Most people seem to agree hardware wallets are best place to keep their coins.  Either that or wallets like electrum or paper wallet.  But I say coinbase or those other main exchanges are probably safe if not safer.  Has anyone had their coinbase, gemini or bitstamp account hacked?

Now the storing of private keys.  Its been mentioned to not store it online.  Now all agree that we should not take a picture of it on our phone or type it in our wordpad and thats it.  I mean if you do that, you should at least encrypt it.

So here are what i think are good ideas.

1.  Type it in something like lastpass or keepass?  That way in order for someone to access your private key, they need to know your password to lastpass or keepass.  So you could keep a copy of lastpass or keepass on your computer, also one on a usb stick, and one online?  That way in case something happens physically?  But the big issue here is if somehow you get malware on your computer, then anytime you type in such as entering your password to lastpass or keepass... then a keylogger could see everything and view your private keys there... correct?  But as long as you don't download anything on it and careful on computer, its fine?

2.  People say best to type write it down on paper and not store any of it electronically anywhere.  I do like this idea as it protects your from the internet.  But do you store this in your house or apartment?  A bank safety box?  If you do this, obviously you break it into 2 parts?  The other issue is what if there is fire or things like that?  Do you keep multiple copies of it?  Such as it break the private key into 2 or 3 parts in your house and apartment?  Then another copy of it in 2 or 3 parts somewhere else?  Like 2 bank deposit boxes?  But i heard cases where bank deposit boxes can be broken into... but the issue is they just need to open it and take picture... they dont need touch or take the paper.  So I assume break it into 2 different safety deposit boxes?

3.  Someone mentioned cryptosteel etc.  So that protects it again fire etc.   But is this good option?  Where in the world do you store it then?

1905  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Updating Nano Ledger Firmware... Stuck Not Sure What to Do... Please Help on: July 24, 2019, 11:21:08 PM
Okay so what happened was the ledger live logged out itself as i didn't do anything for a long time.  I then unplugged the nano ledger from the usb.  Then plugged it back in but did not hold on to the button while plugging it back in.  Then i unplugged it and did it again... bootlogger showed up.  I then released the left button.

Then i did the update... it did like 3 different updates for the firmware update with one thing, then mcu and then another thing... each went to 100% for all 3 of them.  After i did this, i got the message that i need to install all the apps again.  Can someone confirm this is correct?  Did this message show up on my nano ledger screen or ledger live?  Right now im not sure which one it is.

As of now, there is only settings shown on my nano ledger screen.  Is that correct?

So right now im on manager tab on ledger live and it shows ledger nano s with blue check mark and firmware version 1.5.5

So right now i have to install bitcoin version 1.3.11, bitcoin cash 1.3.11 and basically every other wallet i had previously installed... is that correct?  When i click on accounts on ledger live, it does show my bitcoin and bitcoin cash.

I am close to 100% when i did 2 previous firmware updates a while back, it did not require me to unplug it from the usb and then hold it while waiting for bootlogger.  Can someone confirm this?

So right now just go to manager and install bitcoin, bitcoin cash and any other coins i had downloaded previously?  Then after this, these icons will show up on my nano ledger s?

1906  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Updating Nano Ledger Firmware... Stuck Not Sure What to Do... Please Help on: July 24, 2019, 11:09:06 PM
Okay i think i might have made a mistake.  I took a look at the article from ledger and apparently first i need to

Uninstall all apps from your device first?

Can someone please tell me if this needs to be done first?  I did not do this.  All i did was click on update next to firmware version 1.5.5 is available.

Right now im on the screen i mentioned in my previous post.

Do i just follow those instructions and go from there?
1907  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Updating Nano Ledger Firmware... Stuck Not Sure What to Do... Please Help on: July 24, 2019, 11:03:46 PM
So right now disconnect the usb from my nano ledger first?

Then press and hold the left button of the nano ledger while reconnecting it to the usb cable until the bootloader screen appears?

Then what?

The 2 times i did a firmware update before this a long time ago, i am 100 percent sure the update was not done like this.  Where i had to disconnect it and connect it back in the way its been described.

Can someone please tell me if im what about to do is correct?

Freaking out right now because at the moment as i thought it would just update as it would and then i would unplug it.  I don't want to make a mistake here.
1908  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Updating Nano Ledger Firmware... Stuck Not Sure What to Do... Please Help on: July 24, 2019, 11:02:51 PM
Im doing a firmware update from 1.4.2 to 1.5.5.  I have not done a firmware update in a long time.  I done 2 of them i believe and the first time i did it, there was a huge issue with bootlogger and it took a while to fix but few ppl helped me with it.  Im always hesistant with firmware updates because of this.  Some ppl said firmware update is very simple.  But when im doing it right now, im positive the first 2 firmware updates i did a while back ago did not look like this.  Im stuck and currently have my nano ledger connected to my laptop and dont want to unplug it incase i make a mistake.

Right now im on the page

Update

identifer checked.... firmware update.... this is where im at now

Finalize update

1.  disconnect usb cable from your device

2. Press the left button and hold it until you reconnect the usb cable until the bootloader screen appears

on my nano ledger s, it shows a arrow sign and update next to it

1911  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Need help updating old Ledger Nano S firmware 1.2 on: July 22, 2019, 06:02:16 AM
Hi there.  I updated the ledger live pretty simple but just pressing the install update.  I know the ledger live update is simple since you don't even need to connect your ledger to it.

But in terms of the firmware in the nano ledger s, that is much more important?  Or are both the same?  The other thing is this.  Say you are not in your apartment/home and leave your nano ledger there for many months.  There still should not be issue where you cannot update firmware anymore like the OP right?

I mean to me... that doesn't sound good that someone could leave their nano ledger s untouched for years... then you can't update it anymore.
1912  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Top Altcoins that Has Increased In Total Price Since 2017? on: July 21, 2019, 06:47:38 PM
BNB is another coin... yes i cannot believe i didn't wrote that here.  It was 10 cents and now 30 dollars.  That is 300x increase.  I cant believe this coin has went so high because i thought there was no purpose of the coin, it was like a coin of the site.
1913  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: Need help updating old Ledger Nano S firmware 1.2 on: July 21, 2019, 06:46:04 PM
Hi there.  Well are you telling me most ppl update their firmware frequently then?  For example what about those that are strict holders and got a nano ledger s for that specifically and do not trade?  Are these people connecting their nano ledger s every month or so to make sure they have the correct firmware?  Obviously they can check ledger live pretty easily and see if their coins are there whereever they are at even if they dont have their ledger s with them.

Im using windows 10.

Well the thing is i do not have my seed at the moment with me.  So im always hesistant on doing a firmware update because the first time i did it a bit after i got the nano ledger s, it froze and had issues and took a bit to fix the issue.
1914  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: How do you store your private keys on: July 21, 2019, 06:03:36 AM
willy you mean you type it in keepass and keep them all there?  But if someone has access to your laptop, then they still have to know your keepass masterpassword right in order to access it correct?
1915  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why is NEO so silent! on: July 21, 2019, 06:02:03 AM
So its like interest?  Or you only get gas whenever you buy more neo?
1916  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Questions to BTC Holders 2011 And Before on: July 21, 2019, 05:14:28 AM
Can someone tell me what is the price of btc in 2011 in terms of every month?  I cannot find this on coinmarketcap as it doesn't go back that far.

Also where did majority of ppl keep their btc at the time?  Is it bitcoin core wallet where you had to download whole blockchain?  Was it basically that or mount gox?  What about paper wallets?  Or there wasn't those back then?
1917  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Do traders make more money than holders? on: July 21, 2019, 05:13:12 AM
Well i look at it like this.  If you aren't trading, you can't make money consistently.  Thoughts on that?  Seems like one should be doing both?
1918  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: SHIFT - The next 100x potential on: July 21, 2019, 05:12:05 AM
Any other shift holders here think we going to get a price increase?
1919  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Altcoins That Has Went to $0 Price? on: July 21, 2019, 05:11:04 AM
I heard that over 85% of crypto from over a few years ago has went to 0.  Is that true or false?

Can someone give me a list of the popular coins that were pretty well known that has went to 0?  The only one i know of is bitconnect.  All the other coins, they might have dropped to pennies but what coins has went straight to 0.
1920  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Why is NEO so silent! on: July 21, 2019, 05:09:08 AM
What about gas?  I recall back then if you bought neo, you got gas as interest or something like that?
