1941  Other / Meta / Re: Mods/Admin, help please (will pursue legal routes if not dealt with) on: February 05, 2014, 06:15:48 PM
but banning the victim is not right.. does no one have a conscience anymore or what?

defamation can be a grey area, however, libel is another matter and covers written statements which can be viewed by 3rd parties that affect you.

why have a trust system if the whole system is completely fucked?

@hilariousandco, that is what im getting at, i run a small business and my username is known elsewhere. this accusation can be potentially damaging to me outside of these forums. this is why i am considering legal action.

Its a feedback system, people are free to post whatever they want on it. If I give you negative trust because you are an 18 foot dinosaur that stole brownies from an old woman, I'm allowed to do that, however that would hurt my own credibility which is the deterrent. If Vod gives untrue or invalid feedback, people will stop trusting his feedback, and it will have no effect on you anyway. If his claims are valid, then people will trust his feedback.

I can 100% guarentee you, we hear people wanting us to remove stuff left and right for libel. If someone posts something mean words about you on the internet, nothing is going to happen (barring extreme circumstances like death/bomb threats). If I make a blog, and say that Apple is a fascist organization who's products will electrocute you and kill you, nothing will happen. Freedom of Speech + Internet Opinions make the individual essentially untouchable. Libel has to be the 100% known truth misrepresented. If Vod thinks you are an alien and you are intent on taking over the world, as long as he has reason to believe you are, its not libel, its an opinion. Journalists and Organizations are held to a slightly different standard, but that has to do with product competition and responsible jouralism agreements. Slander/Defamation/Libel etc are incredibly hard to claim for individuals. Perhaps the only time I've ever heard of libel charges standing, is when it was between two competing businesses. If you smear another's product for self gain, Slander/Defamation/Libel claims get a bit of legitimacy.

Like I said, check the feedback of the admins and moderators here. If we removed any feedback at all, I'd assume it would be against ourselves.
1942  Other / Meta / Re: Mods/Admin, help please (will pursue legal routes if not dealt with) on: February 05, 2014, 05:19:30 PM
Well first, the trust system is unmoderated. The Admins wont help you, they wont even remove negative feedback from themselves. Second, Slander/Defamation is an incredibly tough subject to sue over. I dont think there is a possible situation where the owners of a forum could get sued over a comment one of its users makes. There are a lot of "controversial" forums that have very unpopular opinions, and they are protected by freedom of speech. There was a site I remember playing around on where their goal was to get sued by PEZ, so they had their members make offensive videos. The winner was a video submission about how Hitler invented PEZ and they were originally colorful cyanide tablets used as extermination tools. The site got a letter by PEZ asking them to take it down, of which they didn't and that was the end of that.

Also, think about what would happen when a similar situation happens on Ebay. Ebay is actually a financial institution and they have no liability over what people leave for feedback. They just ban your account if you cause issues to them. Technically, if there was any real liability in having your account open here, the admins would just ban you and the entire thing would be over.

1944  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] four 1 BTC Casascius Coins (U.S) *Price Reduced* on: February 05, 2014, 03:46:09 AM
Kind of interested in these coins. How much are the gold/silver worth from a metal standpoint?

The gold/silver ones are just an oz of silver, the gold plating adds negligible value. The numismatic value is where the premium stems from, as they were a limited run of 700 coins, and Casascius is no longer operating. Previous to the 1 BTC Silver and Silver/Gold coins, the 2012 10 BTC Coins were Silver and Silver/Gold and those have sold for 25-30 Bitcoins fairly consistantly, which is where some of the investors value is deriving from from these coins, people hoping to see nice returns like on those.
1945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Scammer Matthew N Wright wants to sue Theymos lulz!!! on: February 04, 2014, 08:07:35 PM
He wasn't banned for scamming, he was banned for being annoying.

Anyway, mod payments are taken from a portion of the advertising recieved, not donations, donators funds haven't been touched yet, however new forum software is in the works and has been for like a month now. I would giggle to no end if MNW actually went through with the frivolous lawsuit, and Theymos spent his 10 BTC donation for legal defense.

Just change your password to something incredibly secure. Account aren't deleted.
im sure they are, for the right price. Wink

Nope, if someone was willing to offer a bribe large enough to make it worthwhile, there is probably good reason not to delete the account.

Members on this thread, please do not host giveaways on the thread. It causes confusion with the moderators, just managed to get this thread re-opened since a member was hosting a giveaway here.

Best regards

HAHA! Now I know how to get rid of shitcoins right after they pop up!

Tis also a good way to get yourself banned as well as any other accounts that are intentionally spamming trying to get a thread locked.
1951  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: How-to receive shipments anonymously on: February 03, 2014, 07:02:45 AM
Aren't USPS employees legally prohibited from receiving tips?

Yes, you can give them tips in the form of presents up to a $20 value however  Smiley

I'm not sure what to say about your method, first, the chances of them opening your packages in that senario are INCREDIBLY high. So that sort of eliminates the need to have something shipped anonymously. Id say there is also a good chance that the employees at the post office would have no idea how to handle the situation. After reading this, I'm sort of tempted to try it with something like small/valueless to see if it works.
1952  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: 1.50 BTC/Each - OFFICIAL BITMAIN NORTH AMERICAN DISTRIBUTOR NINJATECH.ORG on: February 03, 2014, 06:56:51 AM
I have to say, I really hope Antminer makes a 2nd gen asic in the future to compete with the 2-3 Thash models that will be out. I wholeheartedly support any asic company that doesn't deal with pre order nonsense. If I'm going to gamble on mining hardware, I'd rather not also gamble on it actually arriving or not, or arriving a year after its obsolete. I'm a big fan of antminers in themselves, but I'm also quite pleased with how the company/distributors handle themselves.  Smiley
1953  Other / Off-topic / Re: Book recommendation on: February 03, 2014, 06:16:46 AM
I'm a fan of the classics, I highly recommend Miguel Cervantes' Don Quixote as it is actually a rather good comedy in the modern sense of the term, it made me laugh quite a bit despite being 400 years old. Its a book that I would consider light reading and very important to catch a huge amount of modern references. I remember sitting in a QED (physics) class reading it, and then bursting out laughing, everyone looked and imediately understood when I said, "d00d got knighted by a hoe" or at least they gave me an even stranger look that I assume meant that they understood.

Inferno, Purgatorio, y Paradisio by Dante Aligiheri. I haven't got around to reading Paradisio yet, but they are an interesting look into untampered with religion, not diluted by today's agenda told in a way that isn't dry and pedantic.

if we are going historical here, I had a buddy who had an original 1926 English edition of Mien Kampf that allowed me to borrow it. While it is not a light read, its essentially just a political campaign/propoganda, if you like psychology or history it has a lot of interesting things that allow you to draw connections to how the whole WW2/holocaust thing came to be.

And more modern, Confessions of an Economic Hitman by John Perkins. I feel a lot of Bitcoiners who are involved in the business side of Bitcoin will draw a lot of connections to the book. It worried me at first, but then I stopped worrying about myself and found the book rather enjoyable. If you are interested in the world's financial system as effected by large corporations, or have conspiracy theories about such, you will like this book.
1954  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: Amagi Metals - Best Prices of Gold, Silver, & Platinum for Bitcoins on: February 03, 2014, 06:01:03 AM
Im having similar issues, I got onto my account, but it kept asking me to change my password, without a password change field available. I placed an order as a guest and received no confirmation email. I'm not worried about it as I know the order went through, but I figured I'd let you know.

1956  Economy / Speculation / Re: Speculation Bet: Bitcoin will hit $600 (non-gox price) by 3-22-14 on: February 02, 2014, 08:27:22 PM
My speculation that Bitcoin will hit $600  (non-gox price) before the end of 3-22-14 HST.

Willing to put up 2 BTC to bet anyone on this call for fun (yes I know it isn't much but it's for the fun of it).

I'm a longer term bull but to make things a little interesting I've put forward this bet.

Will only accept bet with a user who has been on this forum for longer than 1 year's time. Escrow will be used for this.

Any takers?  Grin Grin Grin

In case no one accepts the bet in a reasonable amount of time, the offer expires February 5th, 2014 HST.

As per the original bet quoted here, Smoothie and Chriswilmer will both send 2 Bitcoins to

this address:1Ajj2aC3BY1zJMfpvUDA58rHfdRJsY8ZMF

https://blockchain.info/address/1Ajj2aC3BY1zJMfpvUDA58rHfdRJsY8ZMF

If the price of Bitcoin touches or drops below $600 on either BTC-E or Bitstamp before 3-22-14 HST Smoothie wins the bet. If it does not, Chriswilmer wins the bet.

Question though, what if MTGox starts to suck more than it already does, and it drops down below $600, but the other two do not?
1957  Other / Meta / Re: To whom should I complain about the Administrator? TO NO ONE?? on: February 02, 2014, 06:38:43 PM
I still don't know why people get banned, I mean I am still here and never got banned. If you get banned from Theymos you must have screwed up or was just spamming in general.

People may not like you, but in reality, if you aren't a newbie who's first 10 posts are complete and utter spam, its hard as hell to get banned unless you are trying. If they don't like your opinions, they can get over it.

The account would still be banned, the small Bitcoin fee is to un IP ban people, for example people that want to use a Tor Node that has been IP banned because of another user can pay the small fee to have their IP taken off of the ban list. Its not to make money, the logic behind it is that people that are making hundreds of accounts to spam behind Tor wont want to pay the hundreds of fees involved, while for anyone else the fee is incredibly minimal, something that you could make from using the faucets.
1958  Other / Meta / Re: Gain trust? on: February 02, 2014, 06:33:09 PM
That is correct, the trust system is more about forum politics than anything related to trust.

Agreed, the trust system is just a basic feedback system where people can leave their personal opinions and reviews. Prior trade history is not an indicator of future trade so in most cases its a good idea to use escrow for trades, and use collateral for loans.
1959  Other / Meta / Re: Gain trust? on: February 02, 2014, 06:28:41 PM
In order to get a loan with no collateral, you have to have an amazing trade record. I highly doubt that I'd be able to get a loan without collateral, nor would I want one for that matter. And if you have collateral anyway, no one cares if you are trusted or not. So if you want a loan, your best option is to just provide collateral.

*edit* Collateral being anything that you can physically provide to your lender in case of your default, so that they can recoup their losses. Common collateral is Alt Coins, Shares, and anything that you can easily physically ship to someone, be it gold/silver, mining hardware, or anything else of value that people will agree to accept as collateral.
1960  Other / Meta / Re: It's Time For Theymos To Kill The Alt Section on: February 02, 2014, 04:59:08 PM
In my eyes this clash of bitcoin elitists and ignorant altcoin supporters is really counter productive.

A couple of non drastical solutions:

* remove altcoin related forums from "Recent posts" section (I really can't understand why would anyone use it in a huge forum like this)
* disable color/text size BBCode in the signatures (that would be a huge relief for all the eyes reading these forums)
* add a couple of new subsections in altcoin section
* add a couple mods dedicated to altcoin section
* coin review before allowing an ANN thread (complicated, too many variables, no one will want to do that)
* developer has to send an altcoin application-description with strict requirements before creating an ANN thread (less complicated, but with current attitude no one will want to review those too)
* strict requirements for an ANN thread
* instead of removing alts (if it will ever come to this), just move alts to the different forum (http://alts.bitcointalk.org), could be quite a bit of work, but I think satisfy both sides.

Still, scammers gonna scam and noobies gonna noob. Is there a tutorial on what to look out for in a new cryto currency? There should be one. And sticky.

* Lack of infrastructure to change the Recent posts to not shown (Hopefully will be in the forum revamp)

* Another thing we are discussing, although you can disable signatures personally if they annoy you

* I highly doubt there will be new subsection, Theymos added them so it would be easier for me to moderate, not because he cares that there are subsections there.

Most of what you were proposing is actually spot on. The one main difference is, the Alt Coin section serves a purpose. Its not so people can spam posts or create hundreds of announcement threads and coins, because as long as they aren't actually spamming, we don't care. Its intended purpose was to keep people from posting alt coin stuff in the rest of the forum. Its not because we wanted Alt Coin traffic here, we just knew there would be some so by creating the section, we could isolate it from the rest of the forum (hopefully). The goal is for people to post their announcements/important notices here for the traffic, and then lead people to their own place, or their own forums where they can discuss all they like.
