1961  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Giveaway threads are not allowed on: February 02, 2014, 05:19:18 AM
Just make giveaways for top 10-15 coins and that's it. Whoever makes on the list and start giveaway threads.

No, because then a list would have to be made. The forum's stance in general is that all alt coins are alt coins. The old established coins like Litecoin, Namecoin, etc are equal in alt coin legitimacy as PumpNDumpCoin that was made 15 minutes ago. The market decides the validity of a coin, not the staff of Bitcointalk.

Do you have the list for the 600 coins?? Or are you guessing.  I would be happy to see.

I have an incredibly good memory, I'm the type of guy who can memorize the order of a deck of cards/count cards etc (no one plays cards with me anymore  Cry ) I'm good with numbers.

I did have a list going as a curiousity, but at the 214th coin which was Skiencoin or something like that, I stopped writing them down, as I got tired of opening up excel every time I found a new coin and just started making a mental note every time I found an unfarmiliar name. To be completely fair as I said in my last post about the matter, the number is more for representation purposes, as I made note every time I heard a new name, and didn't necessarily look into the coin further to see if it was actually launched, or just a joke. If I get bored I might finish up the list.

If Theymos himself banned you, you are pretty well screwed. If a Moderator bans you, an Admin can give the ban a second look using their own judgement. If their judgment banned you in the first place, you are probably done.
Well I don't know who banned me, but I assumed it was Theymos because the the e-mail address I was given to appel was contains @theymos.e4ward.com . Now that you mentioned could have been a moderator as well.

I deserved to be punished because I infringed a rule, however what really pissed me off is that no one gave me any explanation or answered my e-mails, and I apologized and ensured it would never happen again.

I did something wrong, but at least I recognized it and wanted to work on it.

Please keep that in mind and consider it. What do you say?

Theymos is the only one who can do ban appeals such as the contact info you were given when banned. It really depends on a variety of things as to how much warning you get. If you accidentally spam a bit, you will get your posts deleted and warned. If you spam 57 replies in an hour window, you aren't getting a warning. If your account was a newbie you are shown a tad less consideration than someone who has been around for 2 years and made a one time slip up.

Honestly, I'm glad that you recognize your mistake and did whatever you did to fix it, you get bonus points, but to be frank with you, if it was a global moderator that banned you unless there are extraordinary circumstances or it was a mistake that the moderator acknowledges, your chances at an appeal are realitively slim. If it was indeed Theymos himself, there is very little to no chance at an appeal.

Now while ban evasion is also against the rules and I wouldn't condone it (you are fine doing what you did making a new account to post here) if it really was a small mistake that you have rectified, for a non serious offense, you are probably alright to just use your new account.

1964  Other / Meta / Re: Stop and Ban those alt coins copycats now on: February 02, 2014, 04:26:58 AM
As a long-suffering oldtimer, I thank you for your realization that this is all cosmetic balderdash and everyone gets to stand on his/her/its merit. No favorites, no demands, just all to the wall. As in regard to scammers, it has always been proportional and unavoidable.

If a coin sucks, you can do your part by not using it. Let those that think its a great idea get burnt, and maybe they will do a little extra research next time. I don't see why people feel they have the right to make the choice for others what coins they can or can't use. If you don't like it, don't use it. If its a horrible idea, let the market take its course, tis a whole lot easier not to waste your time petitioning, and just let the coin run its course.
1965  Other / Meta / Re: Stop and Ban those alt coins copycats now on: February 02, 2014, 04:00:12 AM
This is a Bitcoin forum, we have no interest in picking and choosing what coins are more legitimate than others. Alt Coin specific forums can take on the task of making their own standards.

I'm not talking about this thread in particular, but I'm actually noticing that people "petitioning" against coins are actually just as spammy as the coins themselves. You are welcome to dislike a coin and post a warning about it/your opinion, but please don't post that same warning 57 times like some other people...

No, I mean this. I can't figure out what NKA means.

1968  Economy / Economics / Re: Does no one remember e-gold? The first digital currency backed by gold? on: February 01, 2014, 09:36:34 PM
Research them and they are a perfect example of why gold CANNOT be used as currency.

The act of using materials like gold for exchanging goods causes inflated value of said material. Mainly due to regulators/terrorists/etc.

Gold does not have a system, gold does not show its past present and possible future, like Bitcoin.

We cannot easily store vast amounts of wealth with gold or any other material.

This is why the matrix system is coming and we will all one day be living in cyber space worlds.

No, man will not travel through outer space physically, but by mentally controlling machines safely in a remote location on this planet.

Say this with me:

Gold and any other physical material cannot and will not ever be used as currency/money/medians for exchange, etc.

It just doesn't make sense for the future of mankind.

I believe your statement to partially be correct. I agree gold is not a good currency, you can use it to barter, but it doesn't have the liquidity of currency. I disagree with the bolded part though. That is exactly what gold does, it is a store of wealth. Fiat is not a store of wealth, Bitcoin isn't a store of wealth (although we could argue that one), they are currencies that derive their value from being able to be used to transfer wealth to one another instantly.

For example, I sell you something for cash, I use that cash to buy things, what I have leftover I will either spend in the nearish future, or invest into a store of wealth. If you have an extra $100K and you keep it in fiat form, you lose buying power as time progresses. If you take that $100k and put it into an investment medium or a store of wealth, the goal is to preserve your money, or to make more. Stores of wealth such as gold tend to not be convient for day to day short term payments. That is why we need currencies.

1971  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: BitcoinTalk admin contemplating removal of alt-coin sub-forum? on: February 01, 2014, 04:53:27 AM
No, more than likely the Alt Coin section wont go entirely, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were more restrictions if people aren't willing to cooperate just a little bit. We say that there are no more giveaway threads allowed because they are spamming the board, taking up server resources, and people are abusing them to get their post counts up. We provide fairly simple suggestions, like host giveaways on a coin's own forums, twitter, facebook, whatever, and even allow people to post giveaway announcements here, but just ask that they collect the spamload of addresses elsewhere. The response? People telling us to put them back, make a giveaway section (although we explain 20+ times that that wouldn't solve a single issue) and ten threads about how the admins hate Alt Coins and are scared that they will threaten Bitcoin. All of those things are answered, and no one listens and keeps on complaining, its just frustrating.

Despite how every so often I'd grind my teeth and imagine what everyone would do if the Alt Coin section was removed just to teach everyone a lesson, then I imagine that people would just post Alt Coin stuff elsewhere in the forum and we would have no place to move it besides the Trash, which is why the Alt Coin section was made in the first place. Its a tool that we do need here, not because Alt Coins have a right to be here, but because banning them from the forum in its entirety isn't fair, and we don't want alt coin conversation outside of the section.

Well they have said it's something they've discussed or are discussing. There's mentions over in Meta somewhere.

What we are discussing is what to do about Paid Signature advertising.
1972  Other / Meta / Re: It's Time For Theymos To Kill The Alt Section on: February 01, 2014, 03:27:43 AM
Let me mod this section. I sort every thread and assure all rules are followed.

Theymos: I do it for free, don't need to pay me like the other mods.

Trust me, if you think you want the job. You don't. I still enjoy it, but it was a whole lot more fun when you could get to know the different coin communities individually. Now there aren't really communities, there is a developer or dev team, people that are looking for profit switching opportunities, one or two die hard users for whatever reason, and two or three users that constantly trash talk other coins and recommend their coin. The amounts scale as the userbase gets larger, but it always seems to be in the same ratios.

I have observed very very few people that are qualified for the job, but I do have a small list should Theymos ever ask for my recommendations. Smiley
1973  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Is buying Crypto with Cash illegal? (USA) on: January 31, 2014, 10:56:36 PM
Hey guys,

I've been trying to buy some crypto and someone just told me that it is illegal to buy crypto with cash, especially in the USA because you would be considered a payment processor??

Can anyone confirm this? If you have any documentation I can read over that would be great.

I'm looking to make a buck, not get locked up.

1974  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: WTF? Enermax 1500W atx 2.4 platinum! atx 2.4 and platinum vs 2.3 bronze psu? on: January 31, 2014, 06:29:14 PM
Im very disappointed right now. because when I almost bought evrything for a mining rig i found radeon 7990 for about 250 usd... and 7950 for 170.
Now I have more money but still not enough.Im looking in 23 price comparing sites in uk and ive done that in other countries but (havent found cheap enough yet) this is taking many days.

I would take extra caution buying hardware at that price. I don't know who / where you are buying from, and don't expect you to tell me, nor do I care, however your chances of getting ripped off increases astronomically when you are talking about those kinds of prices. If you are buying them new, I'd say its a complete scam (unless you have some sort of special discount from a personal friend or something) if you are buying them used, be weary of them being essentially broken and refurbished to the point where they might work for a few days before dying again.
1975  Economy / Collectibles / Re: portraits, commissions, and original paintings by Maureen Gubia on: January 31, 2014, 03:25:54 PM
Ok, so the deal is: SaltySpitoon gives me an addy, I'll send 0.505 BTC there (incl his fee), which he confirms. I'll send you a mailing address, at which a hand painted MP-as-Hitler piece of artwork is delivered before April 1st, 2014, as otherwise specified in this thread. Upon receipt I notify teh Spitoon, so he can release the escrow. Upon nonreceipt I idem notify teh Spitoon, so he can release the escrow. Except in case of a dispute you're barred from posting pictures of the thing, because MP wants to do it himself.

If you two are in agreement, you may send the funds to be escrowed here: 1C51C2aA9DbEXJMvkeu8nFx1zMenVgYqXg

and funds may be verified as sent here: https://blockchain.info/address/1C51C2aA9DbEXJMvkeu8nFx1zMenVgYqXg

Although I should mention, quite frankly in my personal opinion, escrow may not be needed for this case. Statistically speaking, MPOE-PR and by extension MP, is far more trustworthy than myself (statistically speaking meaning they have far more vested financial interest in the Bitcoin community) you are more than welcome to use escrow if you wish, but if MPOE-PR/MP scammed you out of the 0.505 Bitcoins, they would lose hundreds of Bitcoin potential profits from their exchange. So it would be against self interest to scam you, and self interest is what you can always bet on when trying to find trustworthy trade partners.
1976  Other / Meta / Re: It's Time For Theymos To Kill The Alt Section on: January 30, 2014, 07:20:18 PM
There is no such thing as a scam coin, its all a matter of perception. Some coins have specs that seem unreasonable, and they die. If it is not a good coin for whatever reason it will die on its own. We aren't here to protect the newbies, we aren't here to protect people from making their own judgements about a new coin. Its just a matter of space and resources, the forums has compiled a huge database of Bitcoin information, we can't also store huge databases of information for 600 other coins.

Unless something goes horribly wrong, I don't see the Alt Coin section being removed in its entirety, because while spammy, it does do a job, and thats to keep Alt Coin posts out of the rest of the forum. Quite frankly we don't host the Alt Coin section because its good for their economy, or we feel it is necessary to have alt coins, its just there for people that want to discuss alt coins, so they don't post in the rest of the forums. The forum's position on a whole doesn't really care if Alt Coins succeed or fail, it is not in our agenda to effect alt coins in one way or another. If attempting to cut down spam on this individual forum effects the price of an alt coin, that isn't our problem, that means that coin needs more infrastructure or sucks in general. If you look at the more established alt coins, they have their own forums and haven't been effected by the giveaway change at all. Your community needs its own place to store its own information, just like our community needs space to store its own information, primarily about Bitcoins. If people are mad that this isn't an equal opportunity forum between Bitcoins and Altcoins, they can get over it. We treat all Alt Coins alike and Bitcoins ahead of them all.
1977  Other / Meta / Re: Who is operator of bitcointalk.org ? on: January 30, 2014, 05:52:24 PM
Wow, that is a lot of tips. Do you use the money, or do you buy bitcoin with it? Smiley

It comes in the form of Bitcoins, and to each moderator they do what they want with it. I tend to hold half in Bitcoins, and put the other half into silver/gold.
1978  Other / Meta / Re: Who is operator of bitcointalk.org ? on: January 30, 2014, 05:43:07 PM
Thats good, how much time does the forum require though?

A lot. I'm probably actively here 4-6 hours per day, with the forums in the background checking in every 10 minutes or so for an additional 4-6 hours per day. Its still a volunteer job, the monthly bonus is just a thank you for what we volunteer to do. I'm constantly at my computer researching/writing papers and such, so I'm not dedicating X amount of time per day to moderate, I'm just here anyway.
1979  Other / Meta / Re: Who is operator of bitcointalk.org ? on: January 30, 2014, 05:31:20 PM
Can I ask how much you get per month. Just a on average?

Depends on how busy the forum is that month. Its ranged from like $50 to a couple hundred.
1980  Other / Meta / Re: Who is operator of bitcointalk.org ? on: January 30, 2014, 05:03:46 PM
Theymos is the most active/main Administrator. Yes all moderators and administrators are paid a split of 25% of the ad revenue monthly. Theymos has a secret algorithm to base mod payments off of so that no one can game the system and abuse the moderating position for additional pay, and yes he is paid under the same system as the rest of the moderators.

Being the Admin of this forum would not support you financially, its more like a nice monthly tip that the staff can use to buy a little something every month.
