2041  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone heard of Midas Mining? I can't read what's on their website. on: March 24, 2022, 12:50:23 PM
I think these guys are in Indonesia, not India.  Guaranteed to be straight up snake oil, especially considering the claims of 12 Kh/s.
LOL, I have no idea what those Youtube shorts are, but that was just a strange little video.  As an aside, I'm not sure what the current fascination is with bright flashing lights when it comes to PC parts, i.e., all the RGB stuff.  One of the things in life that drives me nuts is light pollution, which makes it nearly impossible to sleep in a completely dark room if you've got any sort of electronics on.  Everything has at least an indicator light on it, and it's hard to even buy RAM that's not flashing at you nonstop.

Anyway, I don't know if this is a scam or not--and that's one of the things I'm trying to find out here.  As far as getting 12 Kh/s, you'd need something like a Ryzen 5950x running Monero Ocean, but as I said I'm kind of in the dark as to what's possible.  This could represent an advancement in CPU mining (or at least a new way to mine coins like Monero).

Thanks for the input as to the national origin.  I was hoping some members here who are into CPU mining would notice this thread and post, but I'm not getting any takers.
2042  Economy / Reputation / Re: Finally in the Hero club! on: March 24, 2022, 06:58:59 AM
OP, you registered on bitcointalk before I did, and I'm very surprised you haven't made it to Legendary yet--it's not like your posts don't deserve merits, and I don't know why you haven't earned more than you have.  My best guess would have to be that you haven't made enough posts since the merit system started.  People may not realize that in addition to being a quality poster, you kind of have to be a prolific one as well, because even excellent posts tend to go un-merited more often than not.

If you're interested in having me do a monthly post history review, feel free to send me a PM every 30 days and I'll see what I can do to nudge you along to Legendary status, which you very much deserve IMO.

I do agree with Upgrade00 that the only benefits of reaching Legendary Rank is the extra privilege of earning more BTCs in campaign signatures.
That and it's an ego boost for some as well--hence all the threads by members telling the community when they've ranked up.  I'm pretty sure cheezcarls didn't create this thread because he's just itching to earn more in a sig campaign.  It's nice to be in the rarified air of the Hero/Legendary ranks, because most new members will likely never achieve them unless they stick around for a long time.
2043  Economy / Economics / Re: I heard a rumor that OPEC will go 300 USD / barrel this year on: March 24, 2022, 04:24:08 AM
I think this rumor is about as useful as people who were predicting that bitcoin was going to be $100,000 by the end of 2021.
Yep, or about as useful as most rumors, i.e., pretty much useless to anyone but oil traders who would probably act on it.  For the rest of us, there's not much we can do.  It's not as though we can stockpile gasoline or heating oil in case the price of both skyrocket.  If the rumor was about rice or toilet paper, it might be a different story--but even then, what we're talking about here is just something some internet nobody wrote on a discussion forum with no evidence.

And I'd also point out that you only hear predictions like this when there's already a trend (or what looks like one) in the price of something.  Those predictions about bitcoin going to $100k were usually when it was rising anyway.  And then it turned out to be incorrect, so there you go.

Bump.  I'm still looking for any answers on this neat-looking thingamajig.
2045  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Pretending as me on telegram on: March 22, 2022, 03:28:01 PM
You should never count on the fact that the same username on different platforms means the same user; don't assume anything if you want to avoid (bad) surprises.
To me, that's common sense and I don't see how anyone would just assume, without verifying, that the same username is associated with the same person cross-platform--especially if there's a business deal involved.

There was someone impersonating me on telegram a while back, which prompted me to add a message on my bitcointalk profile and I know mine was definitely not the first case of that happening.  I think it's a common scam tactic in general, and it seems to happen with bitcointalk members quite a bit.  Glad no one got burned in this case, and props to OP for warning the community.
2046  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: [Megathread] The long-known PoW vs. PoS debate on: March 21, 2022, 09:30:01 PM
So no matter anyone's opinion here for or against, the marketplace has already chosen.
And their is an undeniable lean toward PoS or anything other than PoW.
I've never given much credence to market cap when it comes to how "good" a coin is, but in this particular case the PoS coins you named are pretty good as far as altcoins go.  I also noted your point about support for PoS being quite low on bitcointalk (not surprising given bitcoiners tend to prefer PoW).

I've always been a fan of staking coins, and while I do understand OP's point about centralization and so forth, I just don't think it's as powerful an argument against the protocol as it might sound.  That's a gut feeling of mine; if you asked me to give you a considered counterargument, I'd probably have to think for a few days.

On the flip side, there are some PoS coins that are extremely awful.  I'm talking RDD, NAV, Neblio, CURE, and though I hate to say it, PIVX (that one has always had a place in my heart).  And man, NEO is just criminally overlooked.
2047  Other / Meta / Re: Please State What Criteria or Reasons Willing to Give Your MERITS to Someone? on: March 21, 2022, 08:36:17 PM
I'm feeling generous today, so you got some merits that you can give out to a post or two that you like--and that's basically the criterion for why merits are distributed (or at least it should be).

OP, you weren't here back before 2018 so you probably don't realize how bad this forum was back then before the merit system got created.  It was a measure taken by Theymos to curb the rampant shitposting by members in sig campaigns or bounties and to make it nearly impossible to farm accounts, i.e., create a bunch of them and rank them all up just by posting enough to gain enough activity.  If you'd like some reading entertainment, search the Meta section in late January 2018.  The whole section just exploded with threads about merits, and it was friggin' wild.
2048  Other / Meta / Re: List of Meta suggestions for Bitcointalk Improvement on: March 21, 2022, 05:05:35 PM
OP, I've been around long enough to tell you that the number of threads you summarized and linked to would, if graphed on a pie chart as a fraction of the total number of suggestion threads, look like a sillhouette of Pac-Man with his mouth completely shut.  But I applaud your effort, because I'm sure it took a lot of time and effort to dig all of those up.

And maaan, you missed my three suggestion threads.  I don't tend to start a lot of new threads in general, so when I create one that requests some new feature or some sort of change in whatever, you know I have strong feelings about the issue in question.  Among the bugaboos that have hit my berzerk button have been "list" threads, PMs from Copper Member newbies, and members consistently posting enormous images in their posts that add no value to what the topic is.

I love the thread about ending the merit system--it really takes me back down memory lane, because I remember how frustrated a lot of members were when they suddenly couldn't rank up nearly as quickly as they were accustomed to.  Those were fun, lively times.

LOL.

Hey....why isn't a typical imgur image loading?  I just did the same thing I always did when linking to images.  Anyway, the pic is this: https://imgur.com/FlOhist
2050  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Electrum freaked me out for the first time ever.... on: March 21, 2022, 02:20:51 PM
My rebuttal to that would be that including a political pop-up message into wallet software goes against everything cryptocurrency stands for.  And by that I mean that crypto is meant to be a form of money that transcends governments and banks and political bullshit.  Injecting an extremely one-sided message into a software wallet's code is basically telling you what you should think, i.e., what side you should be on--just like the media does and has always done.

By the way, what I just wrote does not mean I support Putin.  But if I did, I might really hate that message and might not want to use what's otherwise an excellent wallet, a wallet that should be for people of all sorts of political persuasions.  Know what I mean?

Edit: Just an FYI to TryNinja that I was replying to stadus's post above, and I probably should have quoted part of his post to indicate that.  Oops.
2051  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Electrum freaked me out for the first time ever.... on: March 21, 2022, 01:57:55 PM
I had to download the Dash Electrum wallet today to retrieve some dust Duffs from an old wallet, and upon installing it I was greeted with a pop-up that said:

Quote
On Feb 24th at 4AM, Russian Federation launched an all-in offensive against peacefull Ukrainian cities and citizens.

Dash Electrum team lives in Ukraine and loves Ukraine. You can help our fight against Russian invasion by donating at:
https:***//my.kuna.io/en/kunaid-ukraine
Slava Ukraini! Heroiam Slava!

I don't know about anybody else, but having politically-charged messages jump out at me when I load a software wallet gives me the creeps--big time.  Maybe it's because I'm completely ignorant about coding and how things like wallet creation happens behind the scenes, but it very much reminds me of web wallets and makes me wonder about who's got control over whether some message appears when I open a desktop wallet.

And why in the world would a wallet creator think it was a good idea to do something like this?
2052  Other / Meta / Re: About self moderation. on: March 21, 2022, 01:46:17 PM
If you're a topic starter or topic creator, there's no way to delete it but you can be able to edit, move your topic to Archival (the trashcan section)<snip>
Is there any advantage to moving an obsolete thread to Archival as opposed to simply deleting the posts and then locking it?  I assume the thread would either disappear into the deep depths of whatever section it was in, or the mods would delete it eventually.

Thanks for bringing up the move to Archival, by the way.  I've deleted my own posts from threads I've started and then locked it up, but I never considered your suggestion before.  In fact, I've been here 7 years and I don't think I've ever manually moved a thread to another section before, even though there have been times I probably should have.  Neat-O.
2053  Economy / Economics / Re: Crypto is a part of war now, like it or not on: March 20, 2022, 04:32:45 AM
But calling it “the world’s first crypto war" is just some clickbait over-exaggeration BS.
It speaks volumes that the first reply to OP's post was that statement--and that's precisely what I was thinking, in addition to all of OP's claims and all those crypto things being done in the name of Ukraine being opportunistic at best.  I find the hard sell for using crypto in the face of extreme suffering to be in very poor taste.

I don't know if "crypto is part of war now" or not--or even if it's an important point if true--but I do see the value of having a form of money that's outside the control of any government or bank.  And I'd say the more private the better.
2054  Economy / Economics / Re: Usa real estate prices % how much have gone up on: March 19, 2022, 05:46:24 PM
The real estate market is like the gold market, it cannot crash.
Whaaat??  How old are you--and I ask that in all seriousness, because I'm old enough to remember the run-up to 2008 or whenever it was when real estate took a nosedive from the clouds and many thousands of people in the US lost their homes because they were taking out mortgages for houses they were never going to be able to afford--and the banks and mortgage companies were just as irresponsible as the folks in the subprime mortgage category.  Haven't you seen the move The Big Short?  Check it out if you haven't.

By the way, gold crashed in 2011.  You're wrong and wrong.

The world population is increasing day by day. land cannot be created anymore, so the demand for real estate will increase every year and it will not stop.
Let me just tell you this: the earth is big.  People want to build their own new house, but usually there's no need to do so if they're living in a relatively populated area where there are pre-owned houses for sale all over.  In my state I can go driving and go miles and see nothing but fields and woods.  I've driven across the US and seen how much empty, unoccupied space there is, and there's no way in hell the population is going to grow so fast that real estate is always going to go up.  That's ludicrous.

You need to go back to school, son.
2055  Economy / Economics / Re: PayPal started working in Ukraine on: March 19, 2022, 05:20:31 PM
But this is a good news for the citizens there.
I agree, but the cynical, evil little devil that lives between my ears just hates seeing big corporations take political stands, whether it's because they believe in a cause, or they're pressured by politicians, or they want to look good in the eyes of their shareholders and/or customers.  There's a part of me that wants the market to be truly free and not subject to the influence of man-made crises like the current one.

But then there's that other side of me that's cheering for PayPal and Ukraine (even though I can't stand PayPal).  Regardless of the reason for them providing their services to Ukrainians, it was a good thing to do.
2056  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] cpuminer-opt v3.19.3, open source optimized multi-algo CPU miner on: March 19, 2022, 12:32:34 PM
except this doesn't do RTM ,i.e. raptoreum , i.e. ghosterider.
Oh my lord....I must have had way too many txt documents up all at once, because I ended up successfully creating the cpu miner that I think is Wyvern or whatever Raptoreum has up on their website.  I had the READ ME of cpuminer-opt up and I was trying to figure that one out as well, so obviously my brain is a wee bit addled.  I just took a look and it does say right there in the READ ME doc that the gr algo isn't supported anymore.

The miner that's the object of this thread (cpuminer-opt) looks much more interesting now that I've begun to understand the workings of it.  I'll let the RTM miner run a little longer then try the other.  Thanks for catching my boo-boo.  I still give mucho props to JayDDee; that wasn't a mistake.
2057  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Anyone heard of Midas Mining? I can't read what's on their website. on: March 19, 2022, 07:35:35 AM
Whilst doing hopscotch around Youtube I eventually did a search for either "raptoreum mining" or "cpu mining" and then filtered the results by upload date (if I didn't apply that filter, all I'd get are videos from Red Panda, Voskcoin, Rabid Mining, Bits Be Trippin', and all the other blowhards that likely care more about their YT revenue than they do about mining).  The results showed this vid, this one, and maybe one other.  I was blown away because while I'd certainly seen USB miners like the Moonlander and Gridseed, the ones in these videos looked like they were mining Monero.

Doing a search I found what looks to be the manufacturer or seller of these devices, but both the videos and the website appear (to my ignorant eyeballs) to originate in India.  I'd really like to know what these huge USB sticks are and what people are saying about them.  If they're mining Monero and RTM, I'm wondering if they're some kind of CPU on a stick, if that's even possible.  Yes, I don't know much about computers but I'm trying hard to learn.

Anyone feel like taking a look at the links above and telling me what you see?

Also:  I don't mean to disrespect the Youtubers I mentioned too badly, but some of them are just so inarticulate and are obviously professional Youtubers who all follow the same algorithmic formula of 2 minutes of fluff followed by an awful musical intro and then "Let's get right into it!".  Oh, and "this is not financial advice".  If I have to hear that one more time, it's bananas for me.
2058  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] cpuminer-opt v3.19.3, open source optimized multi-algo CPU miner on: March 19, 2022, 07:20:13 AM
Please don't post links like that. There is too much malware around.
The only valid links are in the FIRST POST, like I've said many times.
I just stumbled across your cpuminer-opt program today and incidentally when I was Googling it I found this thread.  Just want to say it's nice to see the developer keeping his thread updated and on the straight and narrow.

Over the last year I've gotten interested in computers to the point of obsession, and that was after years of being into cryptocurrency.  That led me to learn about CPUs, which in turn led me to CPU mining--hence the reason why I'm writing this.  I downloaded cpuminer-opt and started running it on a mini PC that I have in another room, and right now it's tuning.  We'll see how much RTM I can mine.  It's not exactly my favorite CPU-minable coin but I'm having fun and it's certainly a learning experience.  Thanks for that!
2059  Bitcoin / Hardware wallets / Re: [LIST] Open Source Hardware Wallets on: March 18, 2022, 06:25:55 PM
No matter how big or small, if your hardware wallet holds the majority of your funds, or one big stash of it, carrying it with you in your pocket everywhere you go isn't recommended.
Yeah, why in the world would anyone do that, unless maybe they were at a bitcoin convention and it served some purpose being on your person--but even then it's crazy to do that if that device represents a huge stash of crypto.  Jeez, I was riding my bike home from the pharmacy last week--less than 1 mile--and had the prescription bag fall right out of my pants pocket without me even noticing it (luckily no one had picked it up when I re-rode my route back to the store).

Hey dkbit98, I've been pondering a lot of what you've written about hardware wallets in addition to a post that was written about HW wallet manufacturers and their access to customer data.  Could you recommend a HW wallet other than the Trezor that would be a really good one?  Same question goes out to the community in general.  I was thinking of starting a thread but it'd look like I hadn't done any research, but I have.  I just want input.
2060  Other / Meta / Re: Mods are not around or things has changed in terms of report handling on: March 17, 2022, 04:31:06 PM
I don't mind he deleted all 4 posts but why he still have the lecture?
First of all, yes you do care.  If you didn't, you wouldn't have gotten your fur standing on end and this thread wouldn't exist.

Second, Ratimov can say whatever he likes--just as you can say whatever you like (within the structure of the forum, obviously, which includes potentially having your posts deleted by someone who self-moderates their threads).  It looks to me like Ratimov made a statement about his early days on the forum, which you followed up with some unwelcome comments about the Russia situation.  Frankly a lot of members here are just sick and tired of that kind of discussion creeping into every crook and crevice on the forum.

You've got to grow a thicker skin around here, honey.
