Cheaps, 1 sat = $0.00056. Lowest than doge.

I think Marty and Matt of TFTC (as well as others) have been doing a great job pushing the "Sats the standard" narrative.  But this is really a difficult problem to overcome.

Unit bias has turned out to be one of the stickiest areas slowing bitcoin's inevitable acceptance.  In fact I would say it is one of the very top "problems".  Luckily it has a simple solution.  But it seems like a tough path to overcome the thought that "no one can afford a whole bitcoin anymore".

I sometimes wonder if "Sats" is a good enough word.  Perhaps so.  It is short, simple, and generally easy to say for people who speak all kinds of languages.  And it might take some time for it to finally break through, but thinking of Bitcoin in THAT unit instead of EITHER whole coins or even USD is more important than I think many realize.

2122  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: May 07, 2021, 01:35:55 PM
Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then kurious. Wink  And the handle was a little on the quick side.. but it did seem to happen.

I would like to point out that this is the BTCXMR chart too.  We have taken a fine beating on that pair, and who knows?  I think BTC has been consolodating for the next (big) leg for a while, and that COULD throw the alts a little rough waters.

On the other hand I think Doge is leading the way (wen Wownero moon? lol such invisidawg) for alts and as Bitcoin heats up and becomes the plaything for institutions and nation states, the alt world is likely to heat up even if the reason is irrational.  Joe Public is still believing the "next bitcoin" narrative.  And it has become expensive to transact in BTC. And even though Doge pumping is bad for crypto in general (because it is BOUND to crash back down I think and it makes the whole thing look like the loony casino much of it is) there are an actual handfull of alts that WILL find their place, and I do not need to explain why Monero is near (at?) the top of that list.

The sector often gets compared to the doc com bubble, and that is PARTLY true.  But the maxis have a good argument that Bitcoin is not a sector, and "there can only be one".  I think they are partly right.  There will not be a "basket" of crypto assets in the end.  I think the development is going to happen on Liquid, and sidechains like it.  And it will overshadow everything the current alts was trying to do.

But (broken record cAPS here).  Bitcoin will never have a fungible base layer.  That tradeoff will never happen.

So... Wink

So now what happens?  That is the fun question!!!

Well... and not to be a bucket of cold water, but the RSI is way overheated on pretty much ALL the long term time frames (6hr - 3d) with only the weekly (and up) having some room to run.

This is the 12h chart.  I think it's not impossible to see more UP, but i think a correction from here is more likley...  and we could even see a neeto C&H here if it does something like this:

I think my biggest question is what is driving this rally?  We are seeing some fairly good volume on this run, and it is counter, or ahead of almost all other alts.

It feels like there is some fairly big buying going on...  I do not assume a big sale went on at WHM? Wink  It is hard to see what REAL volume is doing with all the goofy wash trading at the shady casinos exchanges.

Who is buying?

The fact that the Fed is saying that they're ok with runaway inflation means that every asset class will gain value from now until they stop pumping tons of money into the economy and finally raise interest rates.

Yeah.. I did not anticipate being handed the opportunity of a lifetime on a silver platter would make me feel so sad.

Sick of seeing BCH rise, want to see it pummeled into the ground. Mind you it's still only 2.5% of BTC price and they're celebrating like the flippening is at any moment haha

I’m sick of seeing utter shitcoins pumping. I checked one of my exchange accounts this morning & I see 1INCH pumping 25%, ETC is up about 200% in the last month, DOGE is out of control, EOS up 25%, ADA up 22%.

I mean what the hell is 1INCH.

WTF is this nonsense?

I’ll admit, it’s beginning to piss me off.

I have some 1inch. I took a bunch of ETH I had sitting around and turned them into shitcoins to see what this DeFi was all about. 1inch is essentially a DEX coin used as the middle currency for trading a bunch of other currencies. It will go back down, it's not meant to gain much value over time.

I re-iterate that had I kept my shitcoins in ETH I would be better off even with some shitcoins getting over 150% returns (as their price continues to drop). And had I kept that ETH in BTC it would have even more value.

When BTC dips they dip much quicker. When BTC goes up, they go up quicker.

The key lesson learned with playing around with DeFi is that the ETH gas price is way too high. I've paid $500 in gas fees to set up a trade. But it gives me hope for when we can do it all on the Bitcoin LN using RGB at almost zero fees. ETH and all of the alts will go away.

Someday... Someday.. who knows when?  We will realize that putting all transactions, features, and functions on the base layer or a blockchain asset is a fundamental error.  This FORCES us to be at the will of an centralized authority.  We can build ALL these apps (so far mostly solutions looking for a problem) on sidechains, and those can centralize as much as we might want.  That way we have choice.

OR... we can be OK with having people in control of everything we do, say, and spend.

I wish my faith in humanity was a little stronger.

I kinda can't wait to see the bus get a little bigger... wonder when that will happen?

This is tricky to answer since everything can be changed when triptych happen at next hard fork. We will have to wait some more time before all will be decided and cast predictions while considering actual numbers. I dont believe Monero could have such growth of transactions to get blocks full before the protocol upgrade will happen.

LOL. Never listen to me!

Today "bus" start going bigger.

From block 2353326 to block 2353452, blocks were full or close to full.  That was for over 4 hours and 40 minutes.

https://old.reddit.com/r/Monero/comments/n4ipfb/if_you_ever_wondered_how_dynamic_block_size_works/

As we can see change was not huge. It grows very slow.

We are still growing... All of crypto is starting to feel like it is expanding now... I need to do a little research.

It's fun to see them peering out of the back window. Wink

Ha! I just clicked on this one! Memories!  First ever upload 6 years ago.
Recorded 20 years ago in some wannabe producer dudes basement with a 16track digital machine for free.
And yeah,  he added that whatever drum track. I didn't have much of an opinion on it.
I just let it ride because I was like "oh cool! I'm recording my own song for free! "
He didn't even bother to turn the stupid thing off at the end....lol
Now its kind of etched permanently in time.
Oh look, it has 24 plays!  Woo hoo! I should be star on Instagram so my ego can get stroked....

https://soundcloud.com/sirazimuth/sirazimuth16tr

Hey, I like it. 20 years ago, it was perhaps an Alesis ADAT (you could chain them together).  Before that, recording digital tracks was measured in thousands of dollars per track, ADAT let you put 8 digital tracks on a VHS tape.

Sounds kinda like Bowie/Jethro Tull (without flute).

Heh.. I still have an ADAT... but that is more like vintage 1991.  ~ 2000 there were several affordable 16 track all in one type gizmos with much less trouble to maintain than the old SVHS rigs.  I wonder if there is any parts value of my old unit.. I certainly do not need it any more.

Agree sirazimuth's song has a Tullish vibe... cool.

I don't hate the drum track either. Wink

I agree with Hueristic.  Well I am not sure that the Samourai devs are "scammy" I do not know.  But they are childish, argumentative and have made sketchy claims.  It seems to me that both they and the Wasabi devs have been caught making really bad privacy mistakes.  But the Wasabi devs seemed to just be using broken processes, while the Samourai devs provide enough doubt for there to even be a question as to their purposes in the first place.  I believe it was shown they were sending IP addresses back to their own servers.  That is either an accident or a straight up black hat move.

More power to them for supporting Haveno... but even that seems kind of silly since their impetus is the fact Bisq is allowing users to use the Liquid chain, which the Samourai devs see as evil because it is centralized.  But, this too seems odd since no one HAS to use Liquid.

On top of the fact that Liquid actually offers REALLY REALLY good privacy as a layer on BTC.

I have always thought something about Samourai just seems a little off.

Again.. I thin it's nice they are contributing to Haveno...  but I your attack on Hueristic to be a little over the top.  CTFD IMHO.

Doing this right is a balance of security and simplicity.  If we try to do it in a way that is overly convoluted, or requires a very good memory, or would be difficult to communicate to another trusted human, we are increasing the possibility of a "foot gun".  When I have thought through these I have tried to come up with schemes where I would combine a set of keys for multi-sig with decoy amounts in the wallets associated with the single keys, along with BIP39 passphrases, AND the use of exotic derivation paths.  I began to realize that if I over-engineer the method in the name of "security" I am increasing the chances that I can make a mistake, or simply forget one of the things I did.

The great thing about Bitcoin is that (unless you do it wrong), you start from a position of unimpeachable security. A random 256 bit number (or series of such) completely unknown to anyone else. It's true that management of that poses some difficulties but solutions tend to be problematic only in that they have reduced security compared to the maximum security bitcoin provides and not in comparison to more traditional options for wealth storage (which look pretty poor in comparison).

And unfortunately, for some (most probably) users a bitcoin bank may be the safest solution even taking the counterparty risk into account.  Leaving your bitcoin on an exchange, or in your CashApp wallet is rightly frowned upon by we OG elite... but until we have better trust minimized options it still might be best for the masses.

I wouldn't really agree. That's kinda throwing the baby out with the bathwater. It may just require more sophisticated key management techniques and for people to become more aware of their availability. Your bank and another party might participate in an m of n arrangement, for example. (Though bviously, you are sacrificing some security there, it's still better than trusting someone else with all your funds). The major thing is education though. Of the people I gave Bitcoin to in the past, none of them took notice of my warning to take backups of their wallets.

I certainly agree with this from a idealistic standpoint... But I have found even just getting a lightbulb to go on when just describing what makes bitcoin different than say, Venmo can be hard.  So helping Joe Sixpack custody his own keys safely is tricky.

I’d love to have a view from Aminorex.

We are likely to break USD ATH this year. By how much I don’t have a clue, but I think around 800usd is possible.

BTC ATH, not gonna happen tho. Maybe by 2025

So you think BTC has already topped out for this Epoch?  I will be very suprised if that is so.. I see it as an edge case, one that balances the "supercycle" edge case on the other extreme... I think the latter is actually MORE likely aside from the over-abundance of bullishness... max pain supports your theory.

As to Monero.  I see the chance it decouples significantly from bitcoin to be fairly small.  But better than most other coins.  But that is what it would have to do to fulfil your above scenario...  XMR @ 800 with BTC continuing to drop.

I think it is more likely that we see more BTC action, and *probably* a XMRBTC pullback with continued hold/rise in XMRUSD.

I could see XMR in 4 digits USD EASILY in this scenario...

No, he is saying the BTC/XMR ATH is not on the horizon.
Ah.  Thanks for the decode on that... seems obvious now.  And I agree that is less likely.  I think that is the case for most OG alts too... *maybe* not ETH.

Generated BIP39 Mnemonic 24 words.

I wish to store these words on a 2 of 3 paper backup and hide them.
It seemed a simple task.

So scouring through a book for these 24 words and assigning each a 5 digit code based on page number line number and position of word within the line. Then noting these down pencil on paper and hiding them would probably be meaningless to the finder.
I may just use the 24 words plus 1 method for extra security and commit this to pencil and paper in addition to being in my head.

Bro, dude, ... metal wallet. or engrave in stone. or something along those lines.

Take a look here: https://jlopp.github.io/metal-bitcoin-storage-reviews/

Or DIY it from some stainless steel flat plate. Stamp. Etch. Up to you. I'm going to try etching.

thanks for that, I did look into steel letter sets designed for the job.

Currently pencil on acid free paper. (Whereas in the past it would have been acid on blotting paper)

but not any good in a fire

I thought of etching copper with ferric chloride but steel has a 700F higher melting point and much harder and Ive got lots of scrap pieces lying around.
Maybe weld it face side inwards to shed doors to hide content.
project for a wet day.

To lose bitcoin when it was $300 would have caused sickness in pit of stomach.
But at current prices, the stuff of heart attacks.

A few thoughts.

First of all bitcoin security, especially in the "self-sovereignty" realm is still a VERY unsolved problem. Even current "best practices" are not agreed upon, and many solutions will bring us right back to the original problem.  For example, a BIP39 passphrase...  Obviously these SHOULD be used.  But then, how do you secure THEM?

So balancing simplicity with security is important I think.

As to seed backups.  I think the above stainless steel sheet is a great one.  I am also a big fan of the stainless steel washers on a nut and bolt method, and have made several of these myself.  I even designed and built a 3d printed stamping jig.  I like that these are very compact and durable.  There are lots of great hiding places for them etc...
https://blog.lopp.net/metal-bitcoin-seed-storage-stress-test-iv/

Ultimately, I am also coming to the conclusion that trust minimized services with third parties may be one of the best solutions currently.  Lopp's Casa, or Unchained capital are good examples.  These are multisig schemes that use the third party as a security net.

So I guess now he's planning on having Tesla pump and dump some bitcoin every quarter to make their numbers look good on paper? Lol.

Not true anymore!  Didn't their teeny sale of Bitcoin = something like 14 years of car sales? Wink lol.  But I see what you mean.
2135  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: [XMR] Monero Speculation on: April 28, 2021, 12:33:41 PM
I think the main issue with things like three letter agencies and back doors etc is to do with the cryptographic tools used in the network rather than the codebase.  In other words crypto assets rely on things like SHA2 and elliptic curves (asymmetric crypto privatives).  And the fear is someone(s) like the NSA might know a vulnerability in one of these privatives which has rendered it, for them, no longer asymmetric.  Meaning for the person with the "key to the cypher", so to speak, it will be easy to decode as well as encode which is something we rely on NOT being possible for things like Bitcoin to work at all.

Nearly everyone who really understands these things (not me, lol) seems to think this is a fairly remote chance.
2136  Economy / Speculation / Re: [WO] Meat Maximalism on: April 26, 2021, 06:19:07 PM
What a meaty thread.  I should feast later, though it’s too bad that SwayStar123 mistook my sincere attempt to engage with her constructively as an invitation to Argue On The Internet.  No wonder this is such an extremely toxic community!  Helpfulness is unacknowledged; and fresh perspectives are merely an opening for knee-jerk reactions, instead of an opportunity to learn something new.  Sad!

As for the whole meat thing...I suspect that the media is working in overdrive as they support the NWO plan on getting us all to eat cockroaches. I just can't believe that people on this board are spouting off the propaganda as if it's all true. People who know how much they lie about Bitcoin and still believe their lies about meat. It's a damn shame. Maybe the media has been too kind to Bitcoin...it was perhaps a better filter when it was being attacked as just being used for drugs on the darkweb.

It is religiosity.  People who leave traditional religions (or are raised without them) usually find a modern substitute.  theymos has his transhumanism, for example.  Hereby lately, I have also been ignoring a quasi-religious theological war between the Marxist wealth redistributors, and the Reformed Capitalists who repose their faith in the godliness of the free market; there is not much sense on either side.

Veganism is attractive to those with Puritanical tendencies, such as those with a prior history of demanding the deletion of the Wall Observer.  It is based on self-denial of things that are healthy and pleasurable.  It is loaded with thou shalt not.  Meat is sinful.  Vegans now even have a doomsday eschatology:  Cow farts are literally destroying the world!

Cf. my previous observations on Greta Thunberg and the Children’s Crusade.

Now, take a walk through the religions of the past and present, and see how many more or less deprecate the eating of meat.  Comparison and contrast is left as an exercise to the reader.

Quote from: Nietzche (tweaked by nullius), Twilight of the Idols
He looked like a caricature of man, like an abortion: he had become a “sinner,” he was caged up, he had been imprisoned behind a host of appalling notions. He now lay there, sick, wretched, malevolent even toward himself: full of hate for the instincts of life, full of suspicion in regard to all that is still strong and happy.  In short a “Christian.” “vegan.”

disgusting. you meat lovers are fucking psychos.

You do understand that without meat you wouldn't exist or if you would, you wouldn't be able to put together an intelligent line of words?

Fact check:  He can’t put together an intelligent line of words.  Evidence is above.

Anyway<edit>, since you spoke of evolution in part of the quote that I snipped in my haste here</edit>...

Vegans, as most liberals and other religious fanatics, are evolution deniers who believe in human exceptionalism.

The cat hunts mice, the wolf hunts deer, the lion hunts gazelle—but o talking monkey, thou shalt not.

In truth, talking monkeys are only exceptional inasmuch as their brains swelled up until they became stupider than other animals.

Bitcoin down 25% last week and this place is discussing meat.

Yawn.  It will be back up.  Hey, didn’t I say that Bitcoin is boring (and that’s a good thing).

Thank me later for the increase in discord brought by my innocent little quote from the founder of the Satoshi Nakamoto Institute.  Meat is totally on-topic in any Bitcoin thread!

I am a person of faith... I even have some education in theology.   And I agree strongly with your basic assertion that  veganism can be attractive in the same way much religious expression can be attractive.  It is often held as a sort of righteous ascetism, or self flagellation.  The ethical arguments for vegetarianism have been beaten to death, but those who still hold closely to the tenets of this sort of "faith" cannot be easily convinced.  I have no personal beef (lol) with these people and what they want to practice, for 'health' OR 'ethics', but I am also annoyed by their crusader like tendencies.

It is as if the sorts of personalities who would be crusaders for a religion can express the same sorts of things in the name of the 'environment', or 'the animals', or 'equity' (barf).  These folks are the disciples of zeitgeist following the post-modern faith of humanism, and they claim for their holy scriptures: 'Science'.  Although what they call science is also so strange.  We have heard the phrase "trust the science" from these folks a lot recently.  A quasi-religious phrase in itself, and about as anti-science as you can get with just three words.

I cannot help but also be reminded of the sanctimonious actions of the antifa "black bloc" types storming restaurants and demanding people repeat certain phrases, raise their fists or somehow otherwise genuflect.  To me this is the same sort of (strangely fascist) "convert or die" sort of attitude that has been also used by various extreme religious folks.

I would put forth that this can be a natural progression for people who have no healthy faith in the first place and they are just as annoying, and possibly even more dangerous than those who act this way in the name of God.

Hey Capslock,

maybe you know more than me. I just saw you are discussing Monero. I myself rented Amazon instances back then and mined Monero. I was wondering, do you think it is 100% safe? Take into account a company like Chainalysis. Can they crack Monero?

Edit: I am not asking for tax evasion reasons, not at all!!

I am asking because I want to understand what's possible with crypto.

Cheers!

It's very common for us to discuss Monero in here. Wink

And no, I do not think it would be IMPOSSIBLE to trace transactions.  But I think Monero offers the most battle tested privacy of any crypto asset, and to date any weaknesses found have been addressed.  There is a reason a group of hackers smart enough to steal the designs of Apple's next processors are asking for the ransom to be paid in Monero.  Also the extremely large bounty offered by the IRS implies the strength of it's privacy.

Until we see strong proof that Monero's privacy has fallen vulnerable to forensics, I would think it would be the safest crypto asset in that regard.  Just it's history may be the most valuable reason to use it.  In other words... so far, so good.

Hey Capslock,

just read about the hack. Interesting story. I am a bit surprised though that Monero isn't worth even more. I read the Coindesk article from January about privacy coins, there is a quite a lot going on. I wonder how effective the Taproot update will be, but if I understand correctly, Taproot does not offer full anonymity, does it?

Most of us regulars here in this thread have felt this way for a while. Wink  I honestly do not think it is inaccurate to say Monero could be (one of?) the most undervalued crypto asset (shitcoin?) in existence.  It is most certainly a contender for that spot.

Taproot will add an interesting privacy angle for Bitcoin, in that it will make it possible to do an array of transactions that cannot be identified as a particular type.  A multi-sig transaction will look the same to a forensics team as a "regular" transaction.  So it will add a great deal of valuable privacy for users.  But it does not even BEGIN to approach the privacy Monero offers.  You will be able to open a lighting channel and it not look like it, I guess... and then you get some decent privacy on that layer, but it does not change that Bitcoin is fundamentally a transparent ledger.

I believe Monero's future is also a very polarized set of possibilities for these reasons.  From an investment angle it will live or die on it's privacy.  That will be the reason it is successful, or that it fails.  So far it is succeeding.  But the response of world governments to it, the addition of useable privacy to Bitcoin, and the chance that Monero's privacy could be broken are the areas one must consider if looking at it as an investment.  I am betting Monero excels or survives in all three of those areas ultimately.

Until we see strong proof that Monero's privacy has fallen vulnerable to forensics, I would think it would be the safest crypto asset in that regard.  Just it's history may be the most valuable reason to use it.  In other words... so far, so good.
