2181  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: If Bitcoins crash or go away, what do you plan to do with your mining rig? on: June 09, 2011, 07:23:22 PM
Donate it to my local school, and write off the full value on my tax return. Those lucky students get to enjoy typing up school reports on quad-core, tri-crossfired 6970 $2000 gaming rig.
2182  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: I've found the ultimate mining case on: June 09, 2011, 07:18:30 PM
Nice! looks like it'd actually work for mining rig too, though a brief search online indicates that it's unavailable everywhere? is it old?
2183  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Can I use my laptop to mine bitcoins? on: June 09, 2011, 07:08:34 PM
laptop GPU is very underpowered, you can't compete with the multi-gpu desktop miners. Unless you get free electricity, then any mining done is a net gain.

I think you can expect 1 BTC every week for 24/7 mining on laptop with a pool.
2184  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Why does AMD cards perform so much better than NVIDIA cards at mining? on: June 09, 2011, 06:38:14 PM
The opensource sdk allows ati to perform much better.

How hard it is to create the SDK? I imagine NVIDIA must have noticed that AMD cards are selling out, and is trying to create a similar SDK
2185  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: the end is near.... on: June 09, 2011, 06:34:10 PM
i forgot that the US govt can arbitrarily shut down a company based in Japan.

Now Dwolla would be a bit more dicey...

I think mtgox's bank account is US based, as it is required to obtain a dwolla account. Majority of their money has to be in the US bank account to facilitate dwolla withdrawals and deposits.
2186  Bitcoin / Mining / Why does AMD cards perform so much better than NVIDIA cards at mining? on: June 09, 2011, 06:30:44 PM
What is the reason behind this phenomenon? why does the top of the line NVIDIA cards perform almost 10 times worse than the top of the line AMD cards in terms of mining?
2187  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: BTCguild is beating Deepbit last 3 days! on: June 09, 2011, 06:24:12 PM
what exactly is pool hopping and how does that help mining?
2188  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill might become the top site over MTGox because of Referral and Discount on: June 09, 2011, 06:11:06 PM
People keep raving about the UI, but I find it lacking.  It doesn't show you the information you want in the places you want to see it.  You have to switch back and forth between pages to see your active balance, etc.  It's prettier than mtgox, but don't mistake that for more functional.  They have a lot of work to do.  I have high hopes, but let's not king them just yet.

I agree, one of the things I find missing is the balance showing on every page as on mtgox. Though the withdrawal was fast, as I just tested withdrawing $300 to dwolla, it happened in a matter of minutes.
2189  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoins in mainland China on: June 09, 2011, 06:08:49 PM
TTo circumvent it is very easy. All you need to do is
1. Download Tor browser bundle
2. Download Bitcoin
3. Start Tor and in Bitcoin client Settings->Options check "Connect through socks4 proxy"
Use IP 127.0.0.1 Port 9050 which are default

The great firewall of China blocks Tor.

Inaccurate, the GFW block searchs for Tor and the Tor website itself. But they can not block Tor traffic, it's impossible, unless they maintain a whitelist and block all other traffic coming in and out of China (which isn't unimaginable for Chinese government)
2190  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What are the dangers and risks of keeping cash in Mt Gox? on: June 09, 2011, 05:12:42 PM
There is very little risk in keeping USD in mtgox, unless you don't trust mtgox itself. Since USD transactions are traceable. On the other hand, keeping BTC in your account is a bit more risky, since anyone can steal your password and transfer the BTC out, and it's gone for good, untraceable. So if you don't trade very often, it's better to transfer the BTC out to your secured local wallet.
2191  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill will become the top site over MTGox because of Referral and Discount on: June 09, 2011, 04:13:36 PM
We need to go out of our way to support any good competitor to mtgox, because a single dominant exchange is no good for the future of btc. Similar situation as the deepbit pool issue at the mining forum. One person gaining too much power over the btc network is no good.
2192  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: TradeHill will become the top site over MTGox because of Referral and Discount on: June 09, 2011, 04:08:32 PM
Yep, I just tested the trade with 10 BTC on there, pretty smooth, sold all 10 BTC at a good price of $31, while mtgox price quote was at $29.5
I think there are still not many buyers though since it just opened to public 1 day ago, and most people's funds are not in the account yet.
2193  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mt.Gox changed the bank transfer message! on: June 09, 2011, 03:05:18 PM
I think there's no reason it won't. With or without the X, mtgox should know who you are with just the numbers.
2194  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Is MtGox paying? on: June 09, 2011, 01:45:25 PM
Try tradehill, they are a mtgox clone and are pretty fast in withdrawing, offer a lot more methods than mtgox and much lower commission too. See my signature
2195  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: still profitable right now for mining rig? on: June 09, 2011, 01:42:59 PM
You have to bear in mind the difficulty increase in a few days and also price of BTC may crash.
2196  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: We take it to the real world! on: June 09, 2011, 04:19:12 AM
thanks
2197  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Mining, mining, mining... internet cuts out... only half of my miners resume!?! on: June 09, 2011, 04:15:02 AM
I saw a 7 card build somewhere. But they are really low powered single slot cards, that does like 60 mh/s

off topic but. Care to share your 6 card build? hmm
2198  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Can I use two different brands of 5830's in the same rig? on: June 09, 2011, 03:53:28 AM
they "should" work, but in practice, there are often problems, YMMV
2199  Economy / Economics / Re: How many BTC do you have? Poll on adoption rate on: June 09, 2011, 03:48:25 AM
should make it a range instead of <
