"There's a lot to love [but] … there are botnet operators, hackers, and ponzi-scheme runners floating around our space," explained chairman Peter Vessenes.
Did he really use the word "hacker" in this sentence? Is that a bad thing to be acker? To the general populace, "hacker" is indeed negative. To more coder-types, it's a good thing. I just tell people I'm a computer hobbyist. It's accurate, sounds more benign to Joe Sixpack, and doesn't boast l33t 5k1llz.

How many people here use bitcoin wallet apps for cellphone?
I use BitcoinSpinner. Do any of you guys use GPG/PGP? We could sign each others' keys while we're there too. I would like to know more about this but I don't use ether. BitcoinSpinner is a simple chainless wallet app. I still have my own private key, but a server relays my transactions for me. In my opinion it's a good middle ground between security/usability/battery. When I had a full client on my phone I'd be all like "This bitcoin thing is awesome. Just download the app, and in a million hours I'll eventually be able to send you some. Oops my phone just died." Now my two minute pitch involves free money right then and there, no waiting. GPG is an encryption tool, useful for signing/verifying messages. I kinda just mess around with encryption software for fun, but some people have "key signing parties" where everyone shares copies of their key fingerprint. Once you've verified each others' keys, you will always be able to communicate securely with those people, or the people they've shared keys with, and so on. If you meet in person, you can more highly rate how much you trust the key, which strengthens the "web of trust". GPG is kinda tangential to bitcoin, but I think of it more as part of a greater free software movement anyways.

Did they ever say they wouldn't test on main net? If they didn't, then it's not fair for us to add new requirements after money has changed hands.
Furthermore, making the coming ASIC-fueled difficulty increase smoother is a good thing for the bitcoin economy.
Chalk it up as a lesson learned. When the next big thing is announced, demand either testnet-only testing or lower prices up front. I suspect that when otherwise identical manufacturers compete, the ones who do main net testing will out-compete those who don't.

Did he break any of their terms of service? Do they have a court order?

10/7 4pm Yard House sounds good to me, see you there!

I'd be up for Yard House in Rancho Cucamonga.

Wow, since all of us agree with Syke, we must be in big trouble!
There IS harm in being too vigilant. You've flown since 2001, right? There are far bigger problems to solve out there than all bitcoiners becoming mindless zombies. Don't you remember how everyone freaked out over p2sh?
What makes you think you understand human nature and implied authority better than the average bitcoiner?

The tax disparity would create a wealth gap, preventing the working class from using the city, whereas the low-tax "manager class" would enjoy the fruits of the cheap labour.
(emphasis mine) What makes you think a free-market city wouldn't have slums? It's hard to believe that it would be cheaper to commute to a different city every day than to just reside in low-cost housing.

I can prove it. What is the best way to prove it?
sign something with an address from a block around april 09.
Signature or GTFO. Again, min bet is 10 BTC. If I am lying you win 30 BTC, if I am telling the truth you pay me 10 BTC. Put your money where your mouth is, you are talking to the oldest miner here so have some fucking respect.
"Again"? You didn't say anything about a bet between your bullshit OP and my response, so I reserve the right to call bullshit for free. Bullshit.

What is a free market in land? I would take that to mean that you don't have to pay a third party for owning or transferring land, but that is explicitly contradicted.
+1 If they're trying to copy Hong Kong's growth they'd want land taxes, not property taxes.

I used MyBitcoin and lost big time.
Now I keep most of them in cold storage, and a little carrying cash on my phone (BitcoinSpinner).

I feel the best way to handle potential ponzi schemes is to highlight all of the concerns and make such information visible to the public and then keep our distance. Yeah thats working really well. I know you're being sarcastic, but I do think it's working really well. It teaches greedy people to do their homework and stop deluding themselves. Eventually they'll get used to investing without a safety net, and learn to say "no" to an offer that's too good to be true. If you make being a fool easier, we'll just have more fools.

That's a very interesting idea. Have you taken the idea any further than what you stated in that post? Not very far, I've just been playing around with it on my laptop. IMHO Open Transactions isn't quite mature yet, so I've just been donating towards its development. Eventually I'll either organize or pay towards a bounty to make an OT-based DAGGRE clone or something. EDIT 2013-03-02: actually it couldn't be an exact DAGGRE clone because they generate "points" on the fly, in order to set buy/sell prices based on a preset function. An OT-based prediction market would be similar, but users would create the buy/sell orders. If anyone else wants to see this happen sooner, then defend your freedom by funding Open Transactions! Every little bit counts. 1NtTPVVjDsUfDWybS4BwvHpG2pdS9RnYyQ
