221  Economy / Speculation / Re: Arbitrage opportunities on: January 04, 2012, 01:07:20 AM
Thanks epetroel, I think I am going to check out some non-usd markets. And you're right, the opportunities above 1% are not common.

I looked at btc-e and I don't really know why but I don't feel very comfortable letting my money sit in there.
222  Economy / Speculation / Arbitrage opportunities on: January 03, 2012, 09:52:48 PM
I have been doing automated arbitrage at some of the top USD exchanges, but the opportunities are very rare nowadays. The prices at TradeHill and MtGox now move almost at the same time.

So I decided to create this thread to share experiences with other people that are also doing arbitrage. Does anyone have any tips or do you know about exchanges that are not as efficient? Maybe the USD/EUR/GBP bitcoin market has more interesting opportunities?

Notice that the domain is actually www.mtgqx.tk

It no longer works
224  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question about a transaction on: January 03, 2012, 08:18:09 PM
6 - "16E74xiL19Suz1nVKd8p7ZnuZsjMswZYAC" is an adress I created by cliking on Receive Coin, New Adress, from my saving wallet...

How long will it take before I see the 0.05 BTC in that wallet ?

If you are synchronized with the network you should see it. We're currently at block 160473
225  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Question about a transaction on: January 03, 2012, 07:29:18 PM
1 - Yes, but be careful not to lose any of the wallets. If you lose the file your money is gone.
2 - The "sync" is independent of the wallet. If you have downloaded all the blocks then your client is updated regardless of which wallet you use
3 - There is a new client coming up that might make this easier, but for now I don't know of any easier way.
4 - If you sent money, you should make a new backup of the wallet file
5 - You can use either of them, but after you send money from one wallet you should copy it to replace the other
6 - The 0.038 is the "change" from the transaction that will be returned to the wallet where you sent your coins from. Are you sure that the address 16E74xiL19Suz1nVKd8p7ZnuZsjMswZYAC is in your Savings Wallet?

Boas

227  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: FPGA development board "Icarus" - 2nd batch order start. on: January 03, 2012, 03:15:26 AM
I think it will take longer then that. The power costs are still pretty low on the gpu's. I pay under 3 cents a watt, which is around 6 percent of profits right now. It could play a bigger role if the bitcoin price drops under $2.00 and makes it unprofitable in areas with high power costs. Even then they will still be competing with people like me who can profit unless it drops under $1.00 I think maybe in 7 or more years it could compete, depending on how well bitcoin holds its value.

Electricity costs are 6% of the profits because you are only competing with miners that have cheap electricity like you. FPGAs will allow almost everyone to mine. You can expect a significant difficulty increase during 2012 even if the bitcoin price remains the same.
228  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: New Concept/Idea/Product: Secure Bitcoin Wallet SEEDS on: January 03, 2012, 01:12:04 AM
What advantage will this have over generating my own seeds?

Just about to post that. It seems to me that a user that is knowledgeable enough to import these keys can also securely generate his own.
229  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Noob questions on: January 02, 2012, 08:49:50 PM
Hi, I'm just getting started with bitcoins (well, I've read about 20 hours worth of webpages).  I still have a few questions.

1.  How long, start to finish, does it take to create and fund a dwolla account and purchase bitcoins on mtgox?

2.  Isn't bitcoin vulnerable because so much of its liquidity depends on mtgox?

3.  Isn't bitcoin vulnerable because the developers are few and could be influenced?

4.  How long does it take to be able to post outside of this sub-forum?

Thanks and hello!

2. Sort of. Feel free to use other exchanges. I suggest CampBX or TradeHill.
3. No. Everyone needs to agree on a fundamental change (miners and consequently users). If you don't like what is being done, you can use an alternative crypto-currency or create your own.
4. Read the stickies
230  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Where to get Casascius Bitcoins in Europe? on: January 02, 2012, 08:00:41 PM
Sorry, my mistake, $55 is from memorydealers.com.

I'll try Casascius, and thanks for the info about customs. Good to know.

Cheers!

They ship the "physical bitcoins" without the "digital bitcoins". When you receive them, they send the digital bitcoins to the addresses. So the extra 20% would be on the physical coin value only (which is not much).

232  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how to avoid fees on small transactions. on: January 02, 2012, 05:01:23 PM
The easiest way to do this is probably through an online wallet. Bitcoin exchanges usually let you send bitcoins without paying fees.
233  Local / Português (Portuguese) / Re: Looking for a Portuguese translator for MultiBit on: January 02, 2012, 04:58:20 PM

Não me parece mal.

E sim, rótulo parece-me mais correcto. Não me tinha lembrado disso.

Why don't you order them from Casascius site?
236  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What do you want in a new Bitcoin Exchange? on: December 31, 2011, 04:43:01 AM
I use Tradehill's API withdraw call all the time.

With bitcoins? I also couldn't get it to work...
237  Economy / Speculation / Re: A way to buy bitcoins by credit card or paypal? on: December 30, 2011, 01:19:56 AM
Hello,
is there somewhere a marketplace where I can buy bitcoins directly by using credit card or paypal?

Kind regards,
Jessi

You can also try bitcoin-otc.com, but it will be hard for a new user to get someone to sell you coins there. Also, you know this, right? https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=14632.0
238  Economy / Speculation / Re: What is the best trading-bot? on: December 30, 2011, 01:15:13 AM
Do you understand how DNN-Aricie-Bot works? I never used it (and I'm not sure if it is working 100%), but I think that the default algorithm is to place a few bids/asks around currency prices and try to profit from the price swings. If there are no price swings, you probably won't see a lot of action...

Regarding other bots, there are two main issues with using someone else's bot:
- An open source bot will not be very profitable (it probably won't be profitable at all) because other people can take advantage of the pre-defined strategy and trick the bot into making wrong decisions.
- Most bots need constant adjustments to remain profitable, so if you don't understand the code you can't make these adjustments.

Because of these two points most people end up writing something themselves with a more personalized strategy.
239  Economy / Speculation / Re: What is the best trading-bot? on: December 30, 2011, 01:04:31 AM
Someone should create a bot-as-a-service platform.
It would be highly configurable and customizable. Hell, for all I care, you could submit a short JS snippet as a "strategy" for your bot - that would be your "secret sauce" over your competitors.

You could add Genetic Programming to the mix.

Something along the lines of Covestor.

Of course the downside is that you'll have to trust the person running the bot platform.

240  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: What about bitcoin containers? on: December 29, 2011, 01:26:32 AM
Couldn't you just send a private key with an amount assigned via email? QED.

Exactly.  That is the easiest method.  Create a private key, transfer funds to it.  Now you have a portable digital and physical method of transfering it.  You can print it, encrypt it, email it, put it on a thumb drive, generate a QR code on your phone etc.

You need to generate a new address, send the coins there, send the private key to someone and delete your copy of private key. The other person needs to import the key and immediately send the funds to a new address in order to guarantee that they are not stolen. So I would say that, above all, we need a smart client integration that allows these features.

OP suggestion is interesting because it allows for more complex operations than just sending the private key. You can add a password or a personal message for example.
