221  Economy / Economics / Re: Big Tesla Shareholder Mounts a Rebellion Against Elon Musk on: January 10, 2023, 12:04:17 AM
I think $8-10B is a reasonable valuation for Twitter (based on quick revenue and profitibility stats I can find - ie it didn't make a profit since 2019 but is still pretty well known and used).

Wasn't there reports of Tesla stock doing 14x or something during the pandemic or just before it? I don't know how it's managed to sustain its valuation here and hasn't fallen back further (though I don't think I've ever read any content, or found any, that's been pro Elon). I think he's too focussed on other businesses to an extent where companies might be able to undercut him or replace him on a lot (like spacex and starlink) and if those go, what's next?

I was wondering earlier how Microsoft managed to transition CEOs fairly seamlessly and to an extent where Microsoft have been revived by their new team from what I can tell. I guess investing in a person by investing in a company only does well while that person is still there an actively focussed  Roll Eyes. Sounds like a board's failing to learn, adapt and diversify talent - which could bring Elon's eventual downfall.
222  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Breaking RSA Encryption with Quantum Computer on: January 09, 2023, 10:50:37 PM
Did it say what size RSA the researchers were able to crack? I couldn't find it while I was skimming the article and those keys are already huge because of how weak the algorithm is. 128bit is considered fairly easy to crack afaik and that's not even considering if a medium sized tech firm was interested in cracking them.

If the US or China crack quantum proof encryption, they're telling no one before they make a profit off it and sell it to a Russian/South American cartel or some random government they think will profit them. At the moment it would be a leap considering how volatile quantum bits seem to have been made so far (I thought this was the main issue research has faced so far).

Firstly, Bitcoin Core encrypts its wallet using the AES not the RSA encryption algorithm and for the record, AES is what was used by the NSA for their classified info. As said by another user if it happened that a quantum computer break AES encryption, the problem won't be only for Bitcoin, the NSA, card company, and others government intelligence agency will be affected.

AES is quantum resistant, much like Sha256.

The elliptic curve encryption bitcoin uses isn't considered to be quantum proof but it's not hard to change algorithms and only addressed that have spent funds are vulnerable (a lot of people should be unaffected by that unless you're using wallets with only a few addresses - after spending from an address, your funds are often sent to "change" addresses too).
223  Other / Meta / Re: Why are account farmers still left to roam free in the forum? on: January 09, 2023, 10:34:25 PM
With a lot of sales you can generally tell when an account has changed hands anyway which is probably why the forum doesn't care about it.

I think account farmers are a lot less likely now too and people sell personal accounts which means you probably get a lot of their history (good and bad) too so that'll make it even harder for potential buyers to impersonate people. The account farmers being gone now (particularly in the main boards) is generally due to people not meriting any sub par posts and mods getting a bit more active too (imo they seem to be responding to more requests).
224  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Acquiring bitcoin with cash - what, why, how on: January 09, 2023, 10:26:54 PM
Does the UK still have crypto atms? I read they were being considered "unauthorised" but don't know if they were actually banned or if it was more something the fca put out in writing.

I did an exchange a few years ago for a cash deposit (back before localbitcoins required kyc) and it felt the safest way to do things - the buyer was very communicative throughout too and there was no meeting up or chance they'd used counterfeit funds.

225  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: Stealing from the IRS- Talk about a Gamble! Regulatory scrutiny for crypto mixer on: January 09, 2023, 10:15:16 PM
I don't think there are any still functioning mixers that have gambling and exchange options on them anymore. Chipmixer used to have gambling but I think social engineering removed that (of people complaining chipmixer stole their funds because they just kept pressing buttons or something).

As above, mixers just pool funds together in an effort to reduce their traceability and they do that bit well, if you actually want privacy though you have to know how to get it - it's not impossible, but it is hard to do.

226  Other / Meta / Re: How do I update my ad? I got banned twice on: January 09, 2023, 05:21:09 PM
How long were you banned for? It was likely the lack of deleting previous bumps as stated above (it'll make your thread look neater too if you do that).

If you post updates in your bump you can consolate them all into your first or second post (and can do it via copying what comes up when you click quote if you want too).
227  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: As a newbie it is better you take custody of your coins on: January 09, 2023, 01:23:31 AM
It's a great idea to take custody of your funds from the start (especially if you've only got a small investment) because you're going to be risking less when you really do need your funds in your own wallet (there was some warning FTX was going to collapse before it did, if you know how the network works, you'll be better at taking your funds out as early as possible).

You're also missing the point of crypto if you're keeping funds on an exchange as you're not really investing in it (you're just investing in an exchange as they'll leverage your assets).
228  Other / Meta / Re: Can not quote to a post on: January 07, 2023, 05:53:22 PM
If you're certain you didn't ignore the board.the only other alternatives I can think of is that you have no script enabled or another plug in that's trying to improve your privacy by not sending something across when it's put in the url bar by the quote.

It's been said before that you can't load up the site without noscript over tor and I don't know if that's the same if you use a vpn or not (if cloud flare or Google have built up a profile about you it might not be needed).
229  Economy / Gambling discussion / Re: What's the best strategy for high wagering/low losses on plinko? on: January 07, 2023, 05:41:33 PM
Not sure on the exact probabilities for plinko but I remember it being the most probable to hit the first few slots near the centre and then either the next set of slots or the set after that. I'd guess for a single high bet the best chance are to set the middle fairly high and then half way on either side to also be quite high but you might also be better off dropping multiple marbles on one bet instead that equals the wager amount (though that's probably less fun).

The third slot from the centre seemed a fairly likely hit too.
230  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Looking for a software or script that highlights a list of words. on: January 07, 2023, 05:28:21 PM
Does MS Word not still do this? It used to highlight EVERY word when you used the find function but it'd highlight the first word it selected differently. If you're just after highlighting every word that might be what you need but it used to be a popup window (it might be called "find and replace").
231  Economy / Gambling / Re: Recommendations for Real Cryptocurrency Casinos on: January 07, 2023, 05:23:18 PM
You can find an overview of signature campaigns here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=615953.0

There are a lot of sites that advertise through the forum and have fairly good relationships with it (ie having support threads and multiple representatives to answer queries). If you've exhausted searching for a reputable casino in search engines it might be a good place to start.

Make sure you do good research before picking one though (1xbit is a scam and there may be others - especially newer ones) but most of these don't have support and discussion threads on the forum too so that might be one good way of determining if they're reputable or not (as well as checking their trust list) and that a site with one of those threads doesn't have a self moderated warning just above the op.
232  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Using a Crypto Payment Gateway vs Setting Up a Wallet Manually for Business on: January 07, 2023, 05:13:22 PM
I think it depends on what yiu want to do and how. If you're accepting crypto as a way to dca into it then you're going to be more likely to pick a wallet imo. If you're wanting to just be able to accept a lot of cryptos and exchange them for a bank transfer or convert them to one crypto then a payment provider is probably preferred.

There's an extra bit to this too though because you can use both (and lots of places do) such as using a wallet or open source payment provider (self hosted) for bitcoin and using an external payment processor for other transactions.

An external payment processor might also cut down on fees or make it more expensive depending on how expensive the goods you're selling are (and if the provider has a flat fee).
233  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Miner Marathon Digital Pays Off Silvergate Revolving Credit? on: January 06, 2023, 04:48:00 PM
Now probably isn't a bad time to sell some of their mined coins tbh, though they're probably doing a lot of speculating we'll go lower and might just want the mention for that. Unless they're diversifying into stocks or other commodities they're probably not going to find another good investment for a while (although they did say they were focusing on deleveraging so maybe that's why they're hoping to sell).

Yes I have been following this bank. And I am thinking buying the stock would be a good buying opportunity for the next bull run.

Afaik it's one of the ones that normally get mentioned when people do a rundown of the stocks that can be invested in and tbh they're good investments for tax shielded accounts (like pension schemes and isa (/401k?) accounts).

I doubt it'll perform better than crypto outside of that though and you run the risk of it being like microstrategy (and I also can't decide how long coinbase can actually last).
234  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Hash Power Fee to a Reflection ID on: January 06, 2023, 03:46:53 PM
It sounds like there's no other reason except for it being a scam.

How much are they promising you they'll send? How big is the fee.

To prove this doesn't make sense, you pay a fee whenever you send a transaction which means you'd be paying a fee to pay a fee as apposed to them just paying ONE fee.

A lot of scams work by promising higher amounts for you to send a lower amount first (ie spend 0.001BTC to unlock 0.005BTC)...
235  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why I dont worry too much about using closed source wallet on: January 06, 2023, 03:14:53 PM
The reason I dont worry too much of it and dont bother to put there.

Is because the chances of getting hacked by the company or other is extremely low.

It kinda sounds like it's because you're too lazy to do anything else. Which is an OK reason but you seem to be trying to hide it?

If you've checked your nmemonic works in other wallets too for recovering the funds then you have some extra safety (because that IS open source if it's using bip39).

1 company cant empty 10 million wallets so fast.

They could empty the largest of the person who isn't related to them, then wait, then go for the next biggest and continue (if they wait enough time, people will keep trusting them before they empty a lot of users wallets - they can fairly easily track when you're online and just need to target a rolling attack for everyone they suspect won't be).
236  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: One of the Largest Bitcoin miners are shutting down Celcius Mining Machines on: January 06, 2023, 03:00:45 PM
Read up the news and I want to ask, what is the implications of their actions to the entire crypto space.
Will the shutting impact crypto negatively or has no direct impact whatever.

I think news like this makes some people want to get into mining - if the news is spread far enough.

Some people notice gaps in the market and either don't bother to measure feasibility or try to measure it by buying a machine (and if a few hundred people do that as a result, bitcoin is arguably slightly more decentralised).

I wonder whatll happen to those miners that are being shut off? Is it profitible to buy miners now and sell them nearer the halving? Would a production company want to buy then to make sure their prices don't fall further?
237  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Will Legacy Adresses be supported forever on: January 05, 2023, 10:58:24 PM
I don't think there's a reason it'd be removed from Bitcoin core (and if it was, someone else would probably want to encode for it too - even if someone did it for a hobby project).

There's a lot of niche things quite a few wallets support that I think would go first (like mini private keys and p2pk - which I assume is still possible).
238  Bitcoin / Electrum / Re: electrum on: January 05, 2023, 10:14:35 PM
Can you take a screenshot of the error and upload it to somewhere like imgur (sharing the link here).

You're either talking about sending a transaction or synchronising the wallet and it's hard to worn out which. If it's the first, you might be paying a fee that's too low.
239  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: age 47 is it too late or not to invest in bitcoin.? on: January 05, 2023, 01:19:41 PM
You're only two years older than the ceo and founder of the largest crypto exchange (who started it in 2017) iirc, what makes you think you're old?

A lot of investors in crypto average around your age. A lot of people on this forum seem to be in their 30s and 40s too.

You need a bit of an ability to learn, the rest can be self taught. I'd suggest learning well before you start investing a lot though - the technology can be unforgiving. If you give it 6 months or something to leaen how things work you'll likely be taking less risks and making more informed choices about whether an investment is a good idea and something you can manage well.
240  Economy / Economics / Re: Legal methods of acquiring free assets on: January 05, 2023, 11:54:43 AM
Interesting- then what is stopping people from acquiring these so-called "free assets"? For example, an abandoned luxury (or any cheap model) car may be acquired by anyone and could be sold for the scrap metals they possess.

Though I remember I watched this documentary about some abandoned vehicles in Dubai in which the owners themselves do not recover it. Most of them abandoned these cars since they cannot pay the remaining balance, so they fly away to some other country and the government retrieves the said assets. If you truly want to purchase these cars, then the person has to pay the remaining balance in order to get it.

I do think that nothing is free in this world. There is always that proportionate equivalent which may not be in a form of "money" but time, patience, and skills which are considered the trade-off of such.

A lack of demand, a lack of space and an availability of tips and other places to dispose of.large waste products fairly easily (some people will pay a fee to get rid of large possessions).

Sometimes these low demand assets also become high demand too. There's enough occasions where things like video games and vinyls retain their value or go up in value (compared with inflation) after they've become rare or sought after.

There's occasions I've seen where cars are left without their tax being paid because they stop being roadworthy and it's deemed cheaper by the owner to change the plates and dump it somewhere to have it towed by the government after a week rather than paying someone to remove it.
