You seem to have suggested an interesting variation on the theme. The merit system has two levels - Source1 and Source2. Source1 members obtain refreshable merits under the current system. Source2 members don't get any automatic distribution, but obtain their sMerits from Source1 members. This could be a useful improvement, as it keeps control of primary merit distribution within the current administration.
Isn't all this an unnecessary complication of the Merit system? I too tend to make many suggestions, but realize most of them just add work for the Admins.

Instead of transering sMerits, why not just ask the person you want to send them to for a list of posts, and Merit them directly? I've made that suggestion, but haven't done it yet.

6 different users but the contents are the same!
Just 6? I've seen like 600 accounts involved in spamming similar to this (last January).

I think it's a bot that spams the same message on many accounts, to make it harder to nuke them all. And if the account survives, it just continues spamming the next day.

I've reported 2 of them already today. I'll now start downloading patrol again to catch them all.
The only reason I stopped doing this, is a lack of disk space. It fills one GB per week. If someone has a VPS on standby, it's easy to create full patrol-records to search through (it adds about 50 GB per year).
Having a patrol-archive makes it very easy to search for certain strings (like great project), and create a list of accounts to ban.



I think the spambot takes random titles from other threads, like Bitcoin SCAM!. They use different titles too.

It's amazing how lucrative this ICO shit has become, that people have come up with these business plans to "manage" them like this.
Last think my "informant" told me was bumping rates are around $1000 per week. Spam is big business, and most ICOs are shady money grabbers anyway, so they don't care.

There is so much subjective influence in the awarding of merits. My dislike of heavy formatting, images, and long unsnipped quotes are examples.
I don't think that matters much: on average, this will turn out okay. It's impossible to be objective when it comes to post quality.

If you have 3 negative points, the signatures are automatically turned off.
If you have 10 negative points you are automatically banned.
Say you hate me: I have 4927 posts. If you go read them all, chances are you can find 3 (or 10) bad ones. Or even better: more than 3 of my posts have been deleted by moderators already, in over 3 years on this forum.
Does that mean I deserve a ban? I don't think so, and I've never been banned.

Also the pointing system can be Rank or post-count-dependent like for instance  3 bad reports for a Legendary with 10000 posts  compared to 3 bad reports for a Newbie with 50 posts, need to have different Weight.

But this shouldn't be automated. Question for the Mods: does Bitcointalk keep track of bad posts per person, say a hidden field in the profile only visible for Mods? If it doesn't, I think this should be implemented, so Mods can easily see who's a repeat offender, and take action based on that.
A Newbie posting a referal link isn't a big problem, if he learns from it and stops posting them. I too had the great idea to earn money from posting a few referal links when I was a Newbie, until I got all of them back as Deleted Post in my PM:

For the record: I didn't have a signature at that time. But I stopped posting reflinks.
If, however, a user doesn't learn from it and keeps spamming, he deserves a ban.

In the past year, some of my posts were deleted, when I answered a technical question which turned out to be a necrobump. I'm more careful now, but I don't think I deserve a punishment for that.

The current system, in which each user can earn sMerit to give, based on his own post quality, is beautiful in simplicity. Spammers' sMerit dries up, and the assumption is that users with good posts will also be good judges of other users' posts.

Some different/modified software would be needed. The existing threads structure is not at all suitable. Neither are wiki pages, since they're too easily messed-with. Maybe some suitable online-course software already exists. It'd be cool if the courses were internally gamified a bit, maybe with "achievements" and stuff. And it could be integrated with the main forum, eg. giving you badges on your profile if you completed a course.
Would it still be on this same domain, with the same login? I would prefer that.

The benefits of this should be obvious, and completion of this course could be used as a way to reduce the duration of some bans.
I like it! Give shitposters a chance to redeem themselves, making an effort instead of just dumb spamming.


I'm offering my help in creating or proofreading parts of the courses.

Only posting the address is not gonna help I guess. You need the singed message from Stake your Bitcoin address here topic. If you have not done it before then I am afraid your road is going to be very hard and the worse case will be losing your account for good. If you are the hacker then you can easily change the contents (including BTC address) of the above URLs. So only posting them actually do not prove that you are the real account owner.
You're partially wrong: any posted address can be used as proof of ownership, it doesn't necessarily have to be in the Stake your Bitcoin address topic.
A hacker could indeed edit old posts, but you can archive them for other users, and Admin can see deleted or edited posts. Then again, OP says the account has been locked, so deleting posts isn't a risk.

I hereby confirm I've verified the message, and checked the posts where the address was posted. It all checks out.
