ok OP, based on your last post, it looks like money IS a factor. ditch the 6990, it's hard to find and also overpriced, get two 6970 instead and crossfire them. and i asked earlier, what are you going to be doing with the computer to be wanting 32gb of memory? what makes you think windows will hog 32gb of memory for itself? i bet you won't even use over 8gb for gaming, mining, and general daily usage. do you wallet a favor and grab 2x4gb for $50 instead

32gb of system memory is way overkill, and it will probably throw off system stability.

Why would this effect system stability?  A bad DIMM perhaps, but as long as the OS can address all the memory there should be no stability hit..
even when going from 4gb to 8gb, system stability is affected when overclocking the CPU and/or memory. now 32gb is 4 times this much, i can't imagine it wouldn't affect stability, even when not overclocking. and on top of that, Z68 chipsets only has 4 slots for memory, so to get 32gb, you need extremely high density memory sticks. currently, there's only a few models of 8gb memory sticks, which are at premium prices right now. i'm almost certain it's not possible to populate all 4 slots with 8gb density sticks, but it would be a nice $800 experiment.

hmm look at the adapter's chip, and google the model number to search for drivers. win7 is much better than previous versions of windows in regards to finding its own drivers, but it can't find everything.

Like the idea of doing Quad crossfireX (2x 6990s) but the equivelant Nvidias seem to be better value even if hash processing falls so I am on the fence here.
nvidia is out of the question if you're going to have it as a part time mining rig. with the current difficulty and profit, don't bother mining if you decide to go with nvidia. and as a gaming rig, quad crossfire doesn't scale as well. seems like money isn't an issue, so i would just get a single 6990 or 2x 6970.

32gb of memory is just absurd. what programs will you be running? unless you'll be doing a lot of VM stuff, 32gb of system memory is way overkill, and it will probably throw off system stability.

most of my mining rigs are on wifi as well. more convenient and less cable clutter
2346  Bitcoin / Mining software (miners) / Re: Introducing CherryPicking - new Windows pool hopper on: August 10, 2011, 09:44:59 AM
just a theoretical question: if 100% of all miners use this cherrypicking hopper, then were will be hardly any blocks will complete, correct? because if everyone just jumps into the early rounds of the block and then leaves, then that block in the pool never finishes, and nobody gets any of the rewards. there needs to be at least some honest miners to finish up the job, right?
2347  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5870X2 open box on newegg, someone will love this bad boy =) on: August 10, 2011, 07:31:48 AM
By the love of the Thrice Great Okapi? WHY would you spend $790 for a card that gets a little over 400 mhash? Please explain the insanity?

Two 5830s beat it by a long shot in power and money

EDIT... ok just saw it'a an x2.. still.... too expensive

with this same idea, why would anyone spend on a 6990 for mining? it's because of the density and saved space that carries the price premium. it's not always about the best output per cost. i personally don't buy into the whole high density thing, but for some people it's worth it.
2348  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: How to build your own open air chassis on the cheap... on: August 10, 2011, 07:26:47 AM
why would a miner need a mouse, keyboard, and monitor connected to it at all times? you only need things that for the initial setup, then you can use remote softwares to control it. this works with just about any OS
2349  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Some crazy deal with PCI-E x1 x16 adapters (extenders) 4.4 bucks on: August 10, 2011, 06:03:13 AM
it's hard to tell from the pictures, but are the x16 extenders double or single ribbon?
is there such thing as single ribbon since pci-e is double sided?
2350  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5870X2 open box on newegg, someone will love this bad boy =) on: August 10, 2011, 06:01:31 AM
hmm only 1 available. there will be 1 lucky guy... or 1 unlucky fool to buy this... look at it however you like

ya i bought a few things from them before. but how do you know it's 2 weeks shipping ETA?
2353  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Some crazy deal with PCI-E x1 x16 adapters (extenders) 4.4 bucks on: August 10, 2011, 04:59:03 AM
how do you know these guys will ship from china/hong kong? i don't see shipping ETA anywhere on their website
2354  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: List of motherboard that require shorting pin A1 B17 for pci-e 1x to work. on: August 10, 2011, 04:57:06 AM
You can get some very cheap extenders now! You don't need to put a x16 card directly on the slot if you get an extender for 4 bucks.
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=36106.msg445182#msg445182
You don't get it, problem is when you can't plug an 1x extender into an 1x slot and have it working.
oh wait, i think i may have read it wrong. the boards i listed is for x1 extender into x16 slots. i think boards should work find plugging x1 extender into x1 motherboard slots without shorting pins.

here's two more i have and tested:

MSI 890FXA-GD70 AM3
MSI xpower Big Bang x58
2356  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: external thunderbolt video card enclosure - coming in 2012 on: August 10, 2011, 01:39:58 AM
i guess i missed the price at first. at $300 a pop, that's not practical for mining at all
2357  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: [pics inside] custom built 8-card rack on: August 09, 2011, 11:34:12 PM
yeah i saw that at my local hardware store too, but i couldn't justify the price for something i won't use much. i bought my dremel on sale for less than that  Grin.

thanks! also i had to do some free-hand work, too, but i found a way to handle the drill. the Proxxon has a better build quality than the dremel and is usually used in the industry in germany.
now I know at least that it is best to first drill all holes and then rivet it together, instead of not being able to get into the corner after you nailed them ^^

here are more pics, as you can see it's not all that clean cut and not all angles are 90° - but this is my first piece of metalwork, i think it works out.
it looks like a really stretched version of mine haha. i had plan everything out first, then drilled all rivet holes before i put anything together, because after the pieces are together, it'll be harder to drill. i can see some of your holes are not perfectly lined up  Cheesy, i had that problem on a few of my holes as well
2358  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Powercolor AX6870X2 @ Newegg for $450 on: August 09, 2011, 09:09:40 PM
Well, of course a 2400w PSU is laughable. There's no such thing, they do not exist yet. As I said in my post, to run four of those cards, you'd want 4 x 600w (MFG recommendation) to have plenty of cushion room for overvolting, stability, and all of the other parts of the mining rig that are drawing power. When you add it all up, a mining rig with four 6870X2 dual-GPU cards is definitely going to require a group of power supplies in the neighborhood of 2400w.
and as i said in my post, you shouldn't go off of manufacturer's recommendations, as they always overestimate the PSU power requirement. at least i sure hope you don't buy your PSU based on what the manufacture's say, because you're getting ripped off big time when it comes to mining. if you get a quality PSU, you can load it at 80% for 24/7 and it should be fine. a single 1500w is more than enough to power 4 of these, but two good 750-800w PSU should be a better buy.
2359  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: [pics inside] custom built 8-card rack on: August 09, 2011, 08:55:24 PM
LOL, so what kind of frog is it ?  Huh
no idea, i'm not a frog expert, and neither are you judging from your way off guess about the frog's origin of location  Cheesy

I'm trying to build your rig but I can't find a frog like this.

Where else can I find one? Can I substitute it for a toad?
you definitely need a frog for this build, a toad wouldn't work, although a crocodile might be ok...

Awesome setup! Can't wait to see it finished!
i had a little more time to work on it, almost done. i'll post up update pictures in a bit

started the work today, this will offer room for 2 mainboards and up to 12 gfx-cards. now I will start to drill the holes for the rivets.

first pictures:
[*pic*]
overview to get the idea.
the metal bars are 25x25x1.5mm L bars made of aluminium, each had a lenght of 200cm.
for the Proxxon (http://www.proxxon.com/eng/html/28481.php , http://www.proxxon.com/eng/html/28606.php better than a Dremel)
I do have metal cutting discs, but without a proper working bench it was easier to simply use the strong metal saw.
I use two types of steel rivets for double and triple layer aluminium.

[*picture*]
closeup of some tools

[*picture*]
closeup of the Proxxon.
I use a 3mm metal drill to drill the holes for the screws like for the gfx-card holder and the mainboard holder, and a 3.1mm drill for the 3mm steel rivets.
5000 rpm.
standard M3 screws (like the one from a regular Computer Case, the ones used to screw the PCI-E cards onto the case) can perfectly cut into the 3mm aluminium holes.

[*picture*]
closeup of the Gfx-Card holder. perfect fit!
looks like very clean cuts and drilled holes! i wish i had that thingy that holds the dremel/proxxon, it would have made drilling the rivet holes and screw threads so much easier. i did it by free-hand with a dremel, which was a pain in the arse. how is a proxxon better than a dremel?

waiting to see how yours turns out as well....

i agree with this request. i was personally scammed over $800 by a douche bag, then he changed his account name to try to scam other people
