Did the OP ever get a payout?
243  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: 490,000 Avalon chips already ordered - 150T hashrate spike coming in August on: April 22, 2013, 08:09:09 AM
I think what that earlier fellow meant was that pricing and difficulty will be relatively in sync when actors behave rationally. It seems that this asic phase is akin to the 2011 gpu phase when bitcoin price exploded, in that people acted foolishly. Just as people were taking out $20k loans to retrofit their house and buy GPUs and rigs (that they later regretted), we now see people pricing themselves in at $50,000 for a batch 1 avalon, $9000 for an ASICMiner blade, $80,000 for a batch of avalon chips, rather willy nilly. If this thread is correct, and 150TH of chips has been ordered *already* and people have shown little sign of slowing down on that unlimited train, there might be another glut of "oops, I spent way way way more than I should have" rolling down the track.

Would not surprise me if we once again surpass any reasonable plateau, and find ourselves in deep waters. A shame too, because it makes it very difficult to participate when I can't count on the other actors to not slit my throat along with their own.
244  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: AMD VS Intel cpu/motherboard setups and power draw? on: April 20, 2013, 10:53:15 PM
Not all computers are equal. Are you talking about a minimalist mining-only rig with a weak cut down processor, or a raging beastmonster that can multitask a billion and one things without breaking a sweat? Are you talking about at completely idle levels, under mining load, under full load from mining/surfing/gaming/etc?

Check hardware review sites, they usually have most of this info down, depending on whatever criteria it is you're looking for.
245  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 5850's and their noise on full load on: April 20, 2013, 10:48:11 PM
Reference design blowers will always be loud loud loud. That's one of the main reasons companies went custom. You might consider picking up a box fan, to force air over/through the cards, which assists in alleviating the amount of work the GPU fan must do, lowering its RPM and noise level.

If you have a lil money and free electricity, you might look into water cooling, quiet as it'll get (you still need fans for the rads, but they can big bigger, and in a smarter config).
246  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Rig & Wiring Set up Question on: April 20, 2013, 10:44:49 PM
I would guess that a 240V outlet would have a higher ampere circuit breaker attached to it. If so, a lot of computer power supplies are capable of handling 240V. Example:

http://www.seasonicusa.com/NEW_X-series_1050-1250.htm

Almost all modern PSUs can handle 240V (internationally almost all countries used 240V. the US is one of the few 120V standard countries). It sounds like it isn't a standard outlet though? I'd be wary of a DIY mod on high current wiring.
247  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Miner or Bitcoin Millionaire in SF/LA? BBC would like to interview you! on: April 20, 2013, 08:35:45 AM
I'd be shocked if anyone had an awesome rig in CA. > $0.31/kWh for high power consumption, makes it really unfavorable. Sounds like she found someone though, should be interesting.
248  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [Work in progess] Burnins Avalon Chip to mining board service on: April 19, 2013, 01:36:15 AM
I'm excited by all this, but I realized that between the 1st and 2nd order# from Zefir, there is already 200 other orders in between !

That makes 20 million ASIC chips mining Bitcoin in a close future.

Any speculation on difficulty / profitability ?

I do not think orders are sequential. 200 orders+ is an extreme amount. I really doubt.

Indeed,

$151,320,000 BTC equiv for 2000 orders of 10k chips (the minimum allowed). Seems unlikely.
249  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: XFX 7970 Power Supply on: April 18, 2013, 10:59:04 PM
More info on what PSU you have specifically?

I only saw "750w Thermaltake". But they have different model lines, and they are of various quality (ThermalTake Toughpower, awesome, ThermalTake TR2, total garbage in the garbage can, both 750W).
EDIT: There are tons of SATA/MOLEX -> PCIE converters, assuming your PSU is of quality to be able to deliver the amps needed.

Pretty sure my 7970 is going back to the shop. Tried it on 2 different machines, 2 different power supplies, 2 different monitors, 2 different connectors (HDMI and DVI) still get no screen of any kind. Computer still boots fine, still mines at nice speeds, but I'd still prefer one that actually displays something.

Although I am not mining litecoins right now (too resource intensive) this is a good resource in general, well done, thank you Smiley
251  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: Getting Interest In Group Buy Of 4xAvalon Batch 2s on: April 18, 2013, 04:27:34 PM
1000 BTC is definitely way too high. If the OP is willing to come down quite a bit, I'd be interested in throwing some coin at the problem Smiley
252  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [Group Buy] Avalon ASICs CHIPS! 555 / 782.1 BTC Pledged! on: April 18, 2013, 09:11:57 AM
Zephir used all his own money to buy chips, then re-sell with a small markup (which is fair). This thread is a group buy, for people to pool money together to get the needed BTC to buy 10,000+ chips.

His batch is already ordered (and re-sold) , this batch will not order until the necessary funds come together.
253  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ASIC price cap on: April 17, 2013, 11:16:14 PM
You forgot the electricity, you need a room full of GPU rigs to match the performance of a single ASIC rig, and your circuit break won't stand it

That's what ended my mining expansion back in 2011. Circuit capacity reached (very very quickly too). Thinking back on it, that might have saved my life though, my room was at least 95F with windows open, doors open, and multiple room fans blowing, as well as cross-current windows open.

That said, there is no real way to price ASICs at the moment, super low supply, super high demand, super efficient product. I feel the pricing people are paying for ASICMiners is retarded, but if I had the BTC to splash, I might feel differently. There is a premium to be paid for an "off the shelf" product rather than a "will be made soon, we promise" product.

7BTC seems like a fair limit, but I wouldn't be surprised to see people surpass that.

I dunno why but this amused me

Note shipping cost Wink
255  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: No Asicminer Groupbuy-Thread yet? The auction is running already! on: April 17, 2013, 02:29:11 AM
I don't know why but I feel I have to play devil's advocate.

To start with, let me say that I feel the price is too high really, but people will be people.

However, why is everyone is saying break even of 49 days is something awful? This is a 10GHash miner running at about 90W. It will still be profitable past 150M difficulty (1200THash). Assuming that it does break even after 60 days, and at that point Avalon batch 2 has fully arrived, and BFL has shipped something, you will still be making money for a long time to come, assuming price doesn't plummet to $10 (in which case tons of people are going to be unhappy).

It's not the buy of the century which is why I suggested caution earlier, but it's certainly not a bad deal even at a slightly inflated price.
256  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: No Asicminer Groupbuy-Thread yet? The auction is running already! on: April 16, 2013, 11:14:36 PM
Indeed. THank you for linking the auction, I don't read enough of the other forums to notice these things.

A group buy would be difficult as this is an auction, there is no set price. I would encourage people not to just blindly jack up the price by adding money infinitely into a group coffer. Partly because I would potentially like to buy in, but also because I'd hate to see mania grip people and have them later regret their choices.
257  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: [ANN] Avalon ASIC chip distribution on: April 16, 2013, 09:02:32 PM
zefir... did you get the first order of the chips or one of the first orders or doesnt it matter because all orders of 10k chips are created at the same time?

Then... the developers will have enough chips to create the miner, but later on they want to create and sell miners too, that means they need a good chunk of chips for this. Otherwise a new order has to be made that takes another 10 weeks.
So are enough chips kept back for this too?

I really would like to buy chips alone but at the moment im a bit unsure if i will be able to create an actual miner with it. I mean the design isnt ready so i dont know what is needed for it. I know how to use a soldering bolt and probably can put chips into a pcb. If thats all needed, besides buying all the needed parts then im fine. If someone could answer the question, regarding how hard it will be to create a miner, with "you can do it" i will buy some chips tomorrow.

If it seems like something that makes sense to you, then gung ho. If it seems like gobbilty gook, you probably don't want to mess with it, and buy pre-assembled ones instead.
258  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What kind of rig can I build which can get 10,000khashes or more? on: April 16, 2013, 08:38:23 PM
10000 khash? That's 10 mhash, so just about anything can do that, couple of good CPUs, an old nvidia card, whatever.

If you meant 10000mhash or 10 ghash, that cannot be done easily. Assume you grab a bunch of cheap 5870s off eBay for $150 a pop that can each do 400mhash, you would need 25. That's already 3750 dollars. Assuming you can get 5 motherboards with 5 pcie slots, at 85 bucks a pop that's another 425. To power 5 5870s you need a 1250w PSU which is gonna be at least 200 bucks for a decent one, and you're already past 5000 dollars without any casing cables fans etc.

Thats probably one of the more efficient builds and it won't work, not to mention being a bad investment right now.

There is a DIY ASIC project getting started, you could build a 10 ghash miner for about $500 with some know how. You might want to look into that.

where, i can't find this project?

An order for 10000 chips was made today
259  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: What kind of rig can I build which can get 10,000khashes or more? on: April 16, 2013, 08:37:16 PM
Btc is on a roller coaster ride, but like most roller coasters is will likely end lower than the peaks. My guess is about $35 in a few weeks, but I could be wrong.

That said, no, it is not possible to build a single gpu rig that will put out 10000mhash.

Your options are:
1) buy some fpgas, small, low power. Stick a bunch in a corner and you're good. High cost (10000mhash would cost about 10000 dollars), and hard to find.
2) buy multiple gpu rigs, the cheaper the card the more rigs you need (5830s can be found for 90 dollars or less, but you would need about 32 cards; 7970s cost 400+ dollars but you only need about 15). Easy to find, medium cost, could be done More in the neighborhood of 7000 dollars.
3) buy Asics, total crapshoot. People bought in months ago and still have nothing to show for it. You might get it soon you might get it next year. Super cheap in comparison. prices in the vicinity of $500.

Hope that helps.

Horror of horrors. Truly a worst case scenario. Sorry about that man, hope you get a replacement in good time. I'd imagine that any spot fixes would be very difficult but I'm not a CE.
