The idea is not to 'absorb' the attack but rather to defer it before it reaches your pipes. This is the plan we are considering.

Both services you listed were hosted on a single dedicated server with no formal DoS mitigation.
The plan we are looking at will stand up to 20gbit bad data and/or a million packets/sec
Wrong, when BTC Guild was DDoS'd it was on a DDoS protected server for the primary server, with 6 other remote servers at different DCs. The primary hosting could absorb 30+ gbit/sec attacks. We've since abandoned the idea of DDoS protected hosting because there really is no such thing (at least within a feasible price range). 1 million packet/sec attacks aren't even close to big enough to protect you from a real DDoS these days. You will never be able to offer true (or even decent) DDoS protection for a VPS company unless your prices are adjusted (more than tripled) to reflect it. Sounds like you got shitty filtering. You get what you pay for and you didn't pay either of the two places we're considering for service.

So we're basically considering taking the plunge into protected hosting. It's not cheap. It is so far from cheap. Because of this, before we jump into anything we want a feel from the community.
There have been some attacks launched against Bitcoin services in the past and unfortunately due to the increasing stability+rate of BTC->USD they will only become more popular. Extortion, Blackmail, just plain old idiots attacking people/projects they don't like-- I feel like we're going to see a lot of this in the future so If that is actually the case ... We should get on it now.
I do ask that if you vote you should have owned at least one remote server in your life (VPS, Dedicated Server, Cloud, whatever) or have some plans to host and pay with Bitcoins in the future at some point.

Sounds like you got exactly what you paid for. Cinfu: Are you willing to share any signup numbers with the Community? BitVPS is very transparent in its income/costs/amount of customers. We're just wondering if any other companies in the VPS market would be as willing to share information. I'm not asking for your customer list or any info on your customers, just an amount really. I'm curious to see how much of the Bitcoin community actually purchases hosting/vps/etc. You can see all our information here: http://www.bitvps.com/investor-relations/bitvps-may-earnings/

By the way, I've never created a Tor hidden service. Is is something simple? And by simple, I mean something that an average computer user could do, like, is there a wizard install and all? If you have to go though text files, most people would just give up. If there's such a thing, it would be a good idea to start releasing a bitcoin+Tor* bundle that configures everything and launches your bitcoin already behind a hidden service.
* I say Tor but I guess it could be I2P too... whichever is easier.
No wizards. All you do is add 2 lines to your torrc and you have a hidden service. HiddenServiceDir /var/lib/tor/hidden_coin/ HiddenServicePort 8333 127.0.0.1:8333
Then you reload Tor, and 'cat /var/lib/tor/hidden_coin/hostname' To get bitcoin to use this, just add a couple lines to your bitcoin.conf proxy=127.0.0.1:9050 externalip=p2hwc26zdsrqxiix.onion listen=1 discover=1
The .onion in this example is me, it will obviously be something different for you. Sounds like a great way to pay to have the government sniff you

They can feel free to sniff my encrypted traffic. And if you are really paranoid, run https://www.torproject.org/projects/obfsproxy.html.enIt was a joke.

Wow.. Well, we actually ran out of that exact config in ONE day (wow!) We're going to start pushing these cheap i7's we have, they're a similar config except they have 300GB Raptor 10k RPM disks or a 500GB Western Digital RE4 and best of all they're even cheaper than the E3s! Will keep this thread updated so you server junkies can get your fix James (rg)
