242  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: LTC mining with Reaper on a 7970 on: October 16, 2012, 07:06:17 AM
oh wow what did I tell you tacotime can't get 700kh on a 7970 after all. If it was really possible to get an extra 20% from a 7970 why wouldn't a 7970 run much cooler when running at 550kh it does bitcoin mining at the same clock speeds? Surely enough to make up for a little bit of heat caused by extra ram usage. People still don't believe me on calling out bfl's lies but I did pretty good job here.

@elrodvoss

I think your neglecting the fact that it will take 8-12 hours for that much oil to reach max temperature. Oil cooling just doesn't work well for mining. It would be fine for gaming as you never game for that long straight, well normal people anyways. Maybe if you use the triple radiator and the double it may be enough but even that's doubtful. I'm just trying to help so you don't waste your money on something that doesn't work. It will be way better and cheaper in the long run to take a trip to a junk yard and get one. Just because that radiator says it will dissipate 700w with water does not mean it will do it with oil running through it. The oil acts much different than water because it had a much lower thermal conductivity 0.162 vs 0.58.
244  Other / Archival / Re: Pictures of your mining rigs! on: October 09, 2012, 07:26:09 AM
the oil will get dirty and yellow in usually about 6-8 months and then you will need to buy a fuel filter or something to get it like new again

For me it was the fact that I could keep the computer in a "dirty" location, and not worry about the computer getting covered in dirt or bugs.  Plus keeping it in the garage takes care of any noise issues.  There is a night and day difference between air rig and oil rig with noise and possible heat, but there is also a 2x-4x cost difference between the air and oil.  So it comes down to need or desire.

I'm not very creative
first 4 letters of first name + 1st letter of surname

Sometimes I wish I had come up with something really cool - kudos to those that have Cheesy

huh I always figured you just thought of yourself as Great, but were just dyslexic

Geez! What kinda liquid you using?

If it is just like any other submerged system, it should be mineral oil.

Yeah there's not much else you can use that's clear, unless you spend 100's of dollars a gallon on something like Fluorinert. But damn that would be cool. Thermal conductivity of mineral oil is much lower than water. But on the bright side, systems seem to stay stable at higher temps, because there are no hot spots

but technically I'm pretty sure you could submerge a computer in distilled water if you could totally seal the system from any metals entering the system, but that's probably impossible
247  Other / Archival / Re: Mineral Oil Submersion Bitcoin Rig on: October 08, 2012, 12:53:50 AM
I did have a buddy try that. not mining but just gaming. you will need a much bigger radiator than that, car radiator, transmission cooler, something. Also you will want a really high flow pump as you will probably get about a 10th of what the pump is rated

Well, I made mention of it in another post so I guess I better officially post my pics and my explanation of the setup.

Been doing Bitcoin for almost a year now.  Started with one rig that is running with 4 5850s using box fan to keep system cooled.  Ive been using the spare bed room since its just a storage room for now.  Main advantage is that I can keep the room closed and keep the noise to a min.

Of course I wanted to expand to more rigs, but I did not want to overload the breaker for the room.  I don't have any other spare rooms, and I cant have a rig with a box fan in a usable room.  So I decided to make up a submersion rig.  Ive seen these for years on youtube and I always wanted to try it.  So this was my chance.  The advantage was that I could place the rig in the garage and since the system will be "sealed" I don't have to worry about dirt, bugs, mice, etc getting into the computer like if I used a traditional air cooled rig.

So after alot of digging and planning and errors I got it going.  It is not running at 100% yet, only cause I greatly underestimated the cooling needs with 4 video cards.  I do have a triple radiator on order with some high speed fans, so that should give me the cooling required to run the cards at full speed.

It runs very quiet.  Only sound you hear is the fans since the pump is submerged.

I hold bitcoins.

Or alternately, I think the price of bitcoins will go down.

that's what he wants you to think
249  Other / Off-topic / Re: GLBSE = Grab Losers Bitcoins, Scam Everyone on: October 08, 2012, 12:25:16 AM
What if some of the large issuers on GLBSE are in on it to scam their investors. They never get a copy of databases so they can't pay back all their shareholders. Just a wild speculation but with the things that have happened it wouldn't really surprise me
250  Economy / Speculation / Re: Defaults causing sell offs? on: October 07, 2012, 05:26:54 AM
Do you think today's sell off is being caused by GLBSE closing? Do you ever think we will get to the point where a record default won't cause a dip in price?

It's possible, but in that case I'd consider it a buying opportunity.  As with the Gox incident, the viability of GLBSE does not affect Bitcoin in the long term.  If Bitcoin needs a securities market, replacements will be developed.

The constant closures and hacks are annoying, but as the saying goes, whatever doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.  The weak are being weeded out, and any new exchanges will now have the benefit of hindsight in terms of business models, security measures, and legal preparedness.

We are living in 1850s California.  Life is dangerous, catastrophes occur frequently, outlaws roam the streets.  But if you stake out some land and manage to hold onto it for a few decades without panicking, you will probably come out a rich bastard.

+ 1! (Why bother to write when someone else has already said exactly what you think?)

I think its a great view of things as well, thanks for putting it like that... Well have some million dollar southern California lots in no time!
251  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs invests heavily in high speed production equipment on: October 07, 2012, 01:59:44 AM
The problem was is too many people were willing to put thousands of dollars on the line for lots of gigahashes, with absolutely no proof. Now with the recent large bitcoin scams they realize its possible they made a mistake. They either get defensive or they crave for any evidence they can find. This should have been done more like a kickstarter project. Problem is, BFL is not AMD, they aren't Apple. They aren't a publicly traded company and therefore don't have much backing them to make sure a good product is released. That's why they should release as much info as they can.

I thought building an asic rig was a huge multimillion dollar project, now are they are afraid of giving out secrets to their competitors?

Our board has always had 8 chips (or space for 8, depending on the product).  That has not changed.  Your tinfoil hat bullshit is wearing thin.

What is hurting the reputation of BFL is the deliberate spread of misinformation designed to make you guys seem farther along in manufacturing these guys than reality.

Then guess what?  Wait.  Either by them releasing no product or them eventually releasing a product with specs, you win.

No other hardware manufacturer releases the kinds of information this forum asks for until their product is ready.  You might get a leaked GPU shot from China but all chip vendors release general figures, and then a presentation upon when the product is final.

I understand the difference between cautious vs complacent, but again, don't like it?  Don't order.  Done.

Don't get me wrong.  I understand the paranoia of wanting to know how everything is coming along when lots of funds are on the line.  But since any company for good reason can't tell you everything, you'll have to evaluate for yourself as to if BFL is a good investment for you.  Many here so far feel it is.  If you don't feel it fits your requirements for peace of mind, go somewhere else.
252  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs invests heavily in high speed production equipment on: October 07, 2012, 01:34:38 AM
Btw superfastkyle, didn't you just say you were over it yesterday? What has changed since then? Just sayin

I guess I didn't make myself clear, I'm over trying to change minds/argue. When people can't find facts to argue with you is usually when they switch to name calling. But your calling people crazy that you don't know. Some people like to know as much as they can when they are investing in a company, because that's basically what bfl customers are, investors. I had initially considered becoming one back when they started preorders, but still I like to know info because it effects my business and my future profitability. Its obvious that there are people on both sides whose mind will not change no matter what evidence to the contrary. If I do find something peculiar in new information given by BFL I might post it but from now on its gonna be in a strictly factual tone and let people make their own assumptions. I understand people have a lot of money riding on this and its making people crazy.
253  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs invests heavily in high speed production equipment on: October 06, 2012, 11:09:56 PM
I don't know why you think that not believing everything we hear from BFL labs makes us some crazies or conspiracy theorists. Its usually safer to question things when something looks fishy. I did when I seen that the photos did not look like they were taken at the same place. Different lighting, different flooring, different quality photos, on top of the fact that a usual scam technique is to steal pictures off other websites and call them your own. And I'm using the information I found and lowering my possibility of their release. I used to have gigaming shares to hedge the release of BFL asic, now (conveniently) I didn't think it was necessary any longer and sold them. A true conspiracy theorist would say that bfl products don't exist at all.

Shouldn't you guys be on some fake moon landing aliens website?
254  Economy / Speculation / Re: Defaults causing sell offs? on: October 06, 2012, 10:50:23 PM
but if we are in a bubble now that needs a slight correction, then doesn't that mean the bubble caused by reward halving is still to come?
255  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs is going to give lifetime warranty on: October 06, 2012, 08:52:31 PM
Warranties/support can also put a company out of business. If anyone remembers Quantex/Cybermax computers in the early 2000's. They had good products at a great price, won lots of awards. Their supplier went out of business and then so did they. Leaving many people without support and with broken equipment

sounds to good to be true

I had a lifetime warranty once on a stereo I bought a long time ago.  The stereo still works, but the company that sold it is long gone.

My point is, lifetime could mean lifetime of the company, not the device.

Do you think today's sell off is being caused by GLBSE closing? Do you ever think we will get to the point where a record default won't cause a dip in price?

If we want bitcoin to be more than bitcointalk.org why does it seem that we don't act like it? Price changes happen on many announcements, some I don't think that are warranted. Also many websites still update their users only here on bitcointalk.org. I'm beginning to think that some major bitcointalk downtime would be a good thing. So that people realize bitcoin would go on without it
257  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: Nefario on: October 06, 2012, 08:28:58 PM
Good thing I took all my money out of GLBSE around the pirate scam. But if my money was still there I would want theymos to send out the money himself, I definitely wouldn't trust Nefario to do it. Lets not forget the money returned from the "hacker" to bitcoinica by mt gox still hasn't been returned to the owners
258  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs invests heavily in high speed production equipment on: October 06, 2012, 02:01:06 AM
well I'm over it, as obviously there are no minds to change at this point. You keep using your "critical eye" and I will use my "condemning eye", we'll see how each one turns out
259  Other / Off-topic / Re: Butterfly Labs invests heavily in high speed production equipment on: October 06, 2012, 01:24:51 AM
+This. Get over it

I would get over it if it wasn't for the fact that I want bitcoin to succeed and these perpetual scams are going to kill it if we let it. The increase of scams in even the last month or two is huge. Sometimes I can not believe the blind trust people have in certain forum members/businesses. I remember saying a couple months ago if nothing happened with bitcoinica we would have a huge influx of major scams, as there are almost 0 consequences for pulling off a million dollar scam. Just since bitcoinica we have had pirateat40, Matthews default, Hashkings default, bitfloor frozen accounts, glbse down and who knows what I forgot. As time goes on people lose faith, but there are still those people who cling to it almost indefinitely.

Also how was Sonny's first scam much less elaborate than this one? anybody remember those fake used car warranties? that was pretty elaborate. Elaborate scams do happen quite often.

Please put the rendering down and step away.

I want someone to answer my questions seriously, I'm not afraid to learn. I don't have as big of a ego as some people on here. Someone who has experience or someone at BFL labs explain what we are looking at?
