241  Economy / Scam Accusations / Re: (clubminer) took my $600 Paypal and only gave me $40 on: July 23, 2014, 06:53:40 AM
Quoted from another thread:

Better that it's out in the open where newbies can clearly see what is going on, rather than hidden somewhere off-site. Use your sense when considering trading with others. Use established escrow to reduce the likelihood of being scammed. Certainly don't trust someone because they have a certain rank or post count (why this would make someone more trustworthy is beyond me anyway).

People who are really against this would do better to spend their time posting warnings in the newbie sub-forum rather than trying to stop it. Education > censorship.

This is a real warning and a helpful tip as regards to fake scums buying full member, snr. member accts tand get users ripped of their hard-earned money on the forum as a result of interest trust in people they believe to have so much feedback and trust rating on the forum. I really don't like this motion as the hero members should please go against this. Any newbie can just fall into the trap and lose his/her money. that's why I always use escrow and middlemen to trade.

I believe someone with a bought full member account just scammed me $600 Paypal. I'm so sad at the moment. Stop this movement!

can you tell us what happen?

He had good feedbacks and I sent first, based on that, I sent him $600 Paypal first and now he paid $40 and ran away

I'm confused by your sudden change of philosophy  Huh

quickbits is clearly lying here. Apart from his contradiction above, Clubminer has negative feedback, not positive. Someone in default trust should mark quickbits as a scammer.
242  Economy / Lending / Re: Need 0.41 BTC I'm in a bad bind, please help! on: July 22, 2014, 08:18:24 PM
good thing I took a screen shot of this bastard now should I post it, so everyone can see the scammer?

Luckily one person saved his pics before he removed it. Rehost the pic and post it back on here. It's pressure for him to pay back the loans (not donations).

It's on google images along with some other interesting stuff. Shame no one checked him out beforehand : /

244  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: This is the Real Reason people are interested in Bitcoin on: July 22, 2014, 06:03:46 AM
I would say that the real reason that most people are interested in Bitcoin is because they are hoping that the price skyrockets and it makes them money.

Obviously there are some libertarians that like the thought of taking the power of money away from the Fed and Gov't, and then there is a smaller number of people that are interested in it's potential for micro-transactions.

At the end of the day, I would say the largest percentage of people are here because they are hoping to hit it big like some of the early adopters that got in in the single digits.

Those reasons aren't mutually exclusive. A person can desire financial success and wish to change the world at the same time.

Yeah true, but I would say that 75% of people would rather have the wealth, than the ability to change the world.  Its not a coincidence that the wall/price observer thread is probably the most active thread on this entire forum.

Sadly I can't argue with this. People are very short sighted in general and often fail to see what really generates happiness, hence the state of the world.

I'm very excited about bitcoin 2.0 and the next years of bitcoin. I think we have finally arrived.

What bitcoin 2.0? You mean alt coin?

Read the article.

247  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Bitcoins are not stolen .. on: July 20, 2014, 08:12:05 AM
It didn't say anything on your link about network printers. Can you elaborate?

A network packet sniffer can be used to intercept/eavesdrop print data. See here: http://www.pcworld.com/article/254518/your_printer_could_be_a_security_sore_spot.html

Saved copies on the internal storage: If your printer has an internal drive, it can store print jobs, scans, copies, and faxes. If someone steals the printer, or if you throw it out before properly erasing the data, someone might recover the saved documents.

That's worrying; I'll look into it. Thanks for the help.

eidt: Actually I remember I didn't use the network printer as I was printing from an offline OS. The printer I used (Canon MP480) doesn't appear to have an internal drive)
248  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Bitcoins are not stolen .. on: July 20, 2014, 08:03:46 AM
Can you explain what is wrong with printing the paper backup?
Thanks.

Because the document can theoretically be recovered from the printer queue. Especially risky if you are using a network printer.

See here: http://www.ehow.com/how_6616927_recover-printed-files.html

OK I've deleted the print spool (linux directions here: http://superuser.com/questions/155933/is-there-an-approved-way-to-clear-var-cups-cache-on-a-unix-system)

It didn't say anything on your link about network printers. Can you elaborate (my printer is connected directly to the router)?
249  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: My Bitcoins are not stolen .. on: July 20, 2014, 07:43:33 AM
I don't understand why you have paranoid security on your online computer. The whole point of cold storage is to remove the private keys from the online computer so there is nothing to steal if it is ever compromised.

Here's a simpler and more reliable method.

Online Computer (must be connected to the internet)
1) Download and install Bitcoin Core
2) Download and install Bitcoin Armory.
3) Use Armory's built-in package verification to ensure you have the true installer version
4) Download the blockchain. . . .

Offline computer (no network connections of any kind)
1) Install a legit copy of Windows
2) Full format a USB stick
3) Install the verified Bitcoin Armory package from the USB stick.
4) Create a wallet
5) Create a paper backup. Write down the numbers on a piece of paper -- don't print it.
6) Export a "watching-only" wallet to the USB stick

Online computer:
1) Import the watching only wallet
2) You're done.

The online computer will show wallet transactions and balance. You can use it to create unsigned transactions.

Use a clean USB stick to sign the transactions with the offline computer.

Use the online computer to broadcast your signed transactions.

For those without an extra computer, you can install linux on a usb stick and use that. I'm quite the linux noob and I managed it.

Can you explain what is wrong with printing the paper backup?

Thanks.
250  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Cannot scan QR code. on: July 19, 2014, 06:58:16 AM
My ticket has been replied to. Apparently the difference in the QR codes is normal. The reason it couldn't be read is due to my desktop colour scheme putting a dark background behind the QR code which causes problems for the camera. Pasting the QR code onto a white background makes it readable.

But considering so many noobs that'll fall victim of this kind of stuffs, the forum'a integrity will begin to drag. And that's  not good

Haha. Good one.   Cheesy
252  Economy / Invites & Accounts / Re: SELLING BITCOINTALK ACCOUNTS on: July 18, 2014, 11:48:41 AM
I think out of every retarded thing this forum lets people do, this takes the cake.
It is interesting to know the account is worth a little bit, but yeah as per my first line.... the forum really needs to re-evaluate. this has nothing to do with free speech etc etc.. its just bullshit is what it is.

I don't know why people refuse to acknowledge that if it was banned here, it would go on elsewhere, and therefore see why it's better to have it here, in the open.

Which bitcoin wallet are you using?

If you are using bitcoin core, click "File", "Sign message", enter your bitcoin address and messsage, and finally click the "Sign Message" button.
I did this the first time today. I got my signature, so what do I do with it?
How do I check this message?

Go to the "verify message" tab, insert the address which signed the message, the message body and the signature, and click the verify button.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but I decided to post one of my btc addresses in case my account were to get hacked. Id appreciate  someone to quote this as well..

Quoting doesn't help - quotes can be faked and the post deleted. I reccommend sending a message to DefaultTrust, going to the Outbox, hovering over the link of your PM and writing down the ID (number at the end).
If you posted a message in the auction section of these forums then your address will be safe as you cannot edit nor delete these messages.

But proving you posted that address and own that address could be a different story the hacker could of had hold of the account for a long time and posted that address.

And, what would happen if you switched to a new address? It would be hard proving that you're the owner of the account, I'm guessing.

You would keep the old address too, knowing that you used it for account verification.

Read the above. You need to be able to sign an address associated with the account and PM theymos with the deets.

Sorry OP, I hope it never happens to me or anyone else, I have already done the pm sending part, is there a guide somewhere on how to do the gpg key thing? I don't know much about it.

Thanks

It's different depending on which wallet you use. If you don't get an answer here, might be worth making a new post stating such.
258  Other / Meta / Re: Account hacked, email, security question changed on: July 15, 2014, 07:20:15 PM
Doesn't look like I'm getting that one back, so, posting one of my BTC addresses in case I need to ever recover this account -

12etkEdwV2Ev5v9nskm6XWwVYu7p5h4JUX

Quoting for posterity (hackers can edit posts too).

You might be better off sending a PM to the account "DefaultTrust" and making a note of the message id (in the address bar). I'm sure that was recommended somewhere by a member of staff.

260  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Cannot scan QR code. on: July 15, 2014, 07:13:31 PM
As I understand it, there are over a half dozen different QR formats. Perhaps the one you are trying to read is in a format that your software doesn't understand?

I didn't know that, but it sounds plausible. Anyway I've opened a ticket with screenshots so we shall see. Perhaps I'll need to report this to the Mycelium devs.
