241  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: MTGOX Ponzi? on: July 19, 2013, 10:35:08 PM
I think FIAT is a Ponzi scheme. I voted "no" though because MTGox are incompetent and I don't feel they are intentionally scamming people.
242  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Alt-coin for my Social Network? on: July 19, 2013, 09:56:14 PM
Blockchains are INSANELY expensive to secure. You are saving a fortune right now by using a normal database or whatever to record people's balances and do transactions, basically you are doing "off-chain transactions", and that is the way to go for on-site interactions.

Blockchains are really only useful for going off the site to unknown destinations the site does not control and for coming onto the site from who cares where with something the site considers valuable.

Thus the entire insane expense of trying to secure a blockchain can be left to third parties.

But, you still of course are one of the victims who will be screwed if those third parties fail to secure whichever blockchain you end up deciding to accept/use, or left holding the bag if/when they decide their blockchain is not worth the insane expense of securing it (especially in view of the lucrative profits to be made by suckering people into yet another insecure blockchain... why bother to secure yesterday's blockchain when it is so easy to make a sockpuppet and launch yet another blockchain?)

So unless your goal actually is to scam people, you'd serve your users/community best by picking a blockchain that might hopefully be among the very few (assuming there any at all) that can actually be secured and, also important, will actually be secured. (just because they can do something doesn't mean they will do it...)

I expect, statistically, that your goal actually is to try to sucker people into wasting resources / time / hashes / money / coins on yet another ultimately-un-secure-able blockchain, so expect you will now make all kinds of excuses for why the number of victims and the amount they will lose justifies your going ahead with your get rich quick scheme anyway, of course. But nice try with the getting rather old now verbiage about how your case is different you aren't out to harm anyone etc.

("But, your honour! I'm only planning manslaughter, not murder! I'm not out to harm anyone I'm just going to go ahead and harm them without intending to!")

-MarkM-

Actually, I want to move away from FIAT and the oppressive controls that keep humanity at war and divided. I want to add features to the site that encourage new users, including those not familiar with Bitcoin. Statistically I guess that is a fear assumption as most alt-coin seem to be ponzi schemes, which I have openly criticized myself. I guess you are right about keeping the system in the database though, perhaps it is unnecessary.

It is a Friday night so there might be typos.  Grin
243  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bounties for Hunting down Scammers on: July 19, 2013, 07:53:38 PM
I expose scammers for free  Grin.

Seriously though scammers would just scam people then report those accounts and get a bounty on top of the scam, not the best of idea in my opinion.  Cheesy
244  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: STAR COIN [STR] - The coin with bonus STAR blocks on: July 19, 2013, 07:32:27 PM
My wallet wont sync, I suspect it is a firewall blocking it or something.
245  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Alt-coin for my Social Network? on: July 19, 2013, 07:22:21 PM
On my new social network [bitcoininnovators.com] I have a basic coin system, as you post, leave comments etc you earn coins in the database. It is basic so I am curious if it possible to have my own coin produced that is either integrated into the network site, or at the very least, a new coin could be created  that can be exchanged for coins earned on the social network? I want to do this as a test more than anything, I don't care about making money from the coin myself I just thought it would make the existing system more interesting. What are your thoughts, maybe you have some good ideas on how this might work?

Here is a preview of how it looks at the moment...

253  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin address blacklist Database on: July 18, 2013, 11:18:36 AM
I agree with those who feel this is a bad idea, rarely does voting lead to a logical outcome. Look at every "democratic" government in the world for examples.
254  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Maybe alt-coins are actually good for Bitcoin? on: July 18, 2013, 10:56:13 AM
I would like to propose that all alt-coins, even those that are pump and dump failures are good for Bitcoin. Many say that alt-coins just tarnish the image of Bitcoin, others say that alt-coins reduce the Bitcoin audience. Initially I thought these points were so, however these days I think differently. Alt-coins have many beneficial functions for the Bitcoin community, first of all, alt-coins simply place Bitcoin higher up on the cryptocurrecny pedestal. Bitcoin, at least in our community, has transformed into that classic luxury sports car model. Where-as alt-coins are rusty, many falling a part and are becoming increasingly perceived more as good get a away vehicles for bank runs by the "developers". There is also the idea that alt-coins takes the audience away, again I would now disagree. Alt-coins are temporary for the most part, many who hold them are thinking from a short term perspective, eventually that audience will find its way into Bitcoin or out out of cryto all together. It is my opinion that

My main proposition for this post is that, actually alt-coins are a safety net for Bitcoin. If Bitcoin does badly instead of dumping for FIAT many users will instead put money into an alt-coin. Although that is not the way I personally go about it, at least users will still be hanging around.  Eventually I suspect most will revisit Bitcoin when they feel they can make a quick buck but in the long term the audience is still in tack. Another positive is that alt-coins will enable users to get used to mining and exchanging with crypto, as a platform for beginners and those who might not have much money to invest in Bitcoin I feel alt-coins again filter long term value into the Bitcoin market.

I would also like to add that I have zero invested in other alt coins, I just thought alt-coins acting as a safety net was an interesting proposition. I realize there are negatives too of-course, however I don't see any that out way the points above. So do you agree, and if not why?

Note to mods: I hope this can remain in the Bitcoin section, this post is specifically orientated towards the Bitcoin community as we are talking about the effects and advantages for Bitcoin rather than the alt-coins.

Nice design!

A few kinks:

http://bitcoininnovators.com/about-us not working

I like it how it lets me login with google, facebook or any other account I already have, not.

"Thanks, best regards Owen Prescott.
Donations: 1PBKZXGbqKLxKSHLqn349zDEizooKWnMMV" - You are the only person behind "Bitcoin innovators"

Bitcoin Innovators is a title from my Google+ group which is already established and has over 200 members. I created bitcoininnovators.com for all of those members so I am not just referencing myself who I would consider far from being an innovator  Grin. Also thanks for pointing out the "about us" issue, I was not aware there was still a link to it. I will sort that out soon.

I only registered the domain name yesterday remember lol.
256  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: Bitcoin Innovators [NEW] Social Network - Forum - Merchant Store on: July 17, 2013, 09:49:05 PM
We now have a Portugal forum  Shocked, great to see the first few members and a new group forum already. As a result I have also added a translator which should make the site more accessible for non English speakers.

I like the idea of a social network were we are n the product being sold, and if we are going to be, at least we can make some money buy being it. Smiley

Do you have a monetization strategy, or is it to early?

Great design btw.

I have ideas for monetization however I will only bother with unobtrusive options that actually add value, I wont be adding ads or anything. A good example is the directory page I added recently, in the future I might charge a small free for members to list their commercial project/service/store on the page. This keeps promotions out of the way unless of-course members are actively searching for Bitcoin services in the directory. Listings are free at the moment though for those reading this who might want to add content there.

Making money is not my priority for this project and I am happy to host and run at my own expense to be honest. I want Bitcoin to succeed because I am tiered of FIAT, and before I go into a rant, basically I want to grow the Bitcoin community and maybe even support new projects from the platform.
