Google is giving reporters rides to show them the capabilities engineered in the car.  It looks like they are real close to releasing a working model to the public.  Biggest hurdles is getting new laws past and sorting out insurance policies.

243  Other / Off-topic / Re: Say "Good Bye" to HDD. on: May 15, 2014, 08:08:59 AM
I always prefer to go double. The SSD for OS and programs as well as commonly played games. The HDD for the documents.

The best way to go about it. If you do it like this, cheap 128 GB SSD is all you need.

BTW, getting my crucial m4 SSD was the best improvement in computer performance I felt since I replaced my celeron 1.8 with athlon 64 3200+. Cheesy
Well for some people 128 GB is not enough even for the drive with the OS. This is what kept me from not buying a SSD yet.

128GB is plenty if you are using it "only" for the (a) OS.  If you install multiple OS on the SSD then you could potentially fill it up.   I have a 240gb installed.  Although I intended to use it only for the OS is has slowly acquired other files/programs.  I have a sloppy tendency to always download files to the desktop and sometimes when installing new programs I mistakenly install them to the SSD.

And yet you created compilation of this madness? Good job op, thanks. Some of the threads are quite nice to be honest. I really like to see what others thinks about some things, it can be pretty amusing/funny/informative.

39 replies to "what is the best day of the week" was also very informative to me.  I would be lost without informative threads like this one.  Lol.   Undecided

In all truth, "some" threads may be fun to explore but this section is filled with so many ridiculous questions it boggles the mind why people even participate.  I only listed a small selection of the numerous "question" posts.   Keep watching over the next few days and you will see more stupid ones posted.

If you add the beard to that guy and put an AMT bounty Miner in his arm instead of the pole it might resemble the PG we have on this site https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iO-EGJhdx4U
The guy in that story was he mumbling something about a Josh and a bounty?

hmmm maybe Not

So, that's Phinnaeus Gage? As in, the guy that is always bringing up goats, for some reason?  Grin

EDIT: if the reason has anything to do with the "Goat Simulator" however, I fully understand.

We actually have a lot of Phineas Gage members on this forum (people who only have 1/2 a brain).  But for historical sake I thought I would bring up the "real" Phineas Gage and the story behind the legend.

Proof some of our members have half a brain!  Thanks b!z for helping the lost soul.

248  Other / Off-topic / Re: Sir Richard Branson's vision for NYC to Tokyo in 1 hour on: May 09, 2014, 03:51:20 AM
I think this is going to be impossible unless some new regulations are adopted. (Doubtful)

Current generation civilian supersonic aircraft are prohibited from flying supersonically overland in most parts of the world. The problem of sonic boom was the single biggest factor in the commercial failure of Concorde and has continued to prevent adoption of supersonic transports.

So unless they plan on flying entirely over the open ocean and taking the "long route", there is no way they will accomplish this in the stated time.

250  Other / Off-topic / Re: Saving private key in MS Word on: May 06, 2014, 07:17:46 AM
A decent hacker can crack the password of any encrypted MS Word / MS Excel file in less than 5 minutes. This is one of the worst ideas I have ever heard here in Bitcointalk.  Grin

Nonsense.  If you want we can each put 1 BTC into escrow. i will give you a word file, you hack it, or have someone hack it within 5 days (more than your 5 minutes) and you win, otherwise I win once I provide passphrase to escrow so they can verify the file can be decrypted without issue given the correct passphrase.

Game?

In the old days (10 years ago) it was easy to crack word/excel files.  I did it all the time for employee files using simple hacker tools.  More advanced tools were also easily purchased from sites like www.lostpassword.com.  (And we did occasionally purchase commercial cracking tools). But as the OP stated, word/excel has upped the encryption so I am sure it is more difficult.  I haven't really kept up on the tools or encryption hacks to know how feasible it is to crack current word/excel files.  But even back then it sometimes would take days to brute force a password.

People still manufacture, buy and use tape.  In fact there is still research going on to increase the data density on tape.

HDD will be around for years.

By the looks of things I would say tapes may get a second life.

253  Other / Off-topic / Re: How to use TOR ? on: May 03, 2014, 07:31:15 PM

TOR servers can be run by anyone. There are groups who want information by any means possible, this includes secret agencies but also others.

Average Joe would be crazy to run a tor exit relay node.  All the "bad traffic" would be linking to his IP and potentially cause a legal nightmare.  Running a regular relay node however is supposedly alright.

FROM TorProject
Quote
Should I run an exit relay from my home?

No. If law enforcement becomes interested in traffic from your exit relay, it's possible that officers will seize your computer. For that reason, it's best not to run your exit relay in your home or using your home Internet connection.

Instead, consider running your exit relay in a commercial facility that is supportive of Tor. Have a separate IP address for your exit relay, and don't route your own traffic through it.

Of course, you should avoid keeping any sensitive or personal information on the computer hosting your exit relay, and you never should use that machine for any illegal purpose.

SSD prices are still too high to abandon HDD.
I think the horse buggy manufacturers said the same thing about new automobiles.   Smiley

The article didn't mention what prices will cost so who knows if they will be affordable or not.  And if you need a large capacity (and fast) drive then SSDs will be your only option.  As mass adoption comes into play I suspect the prices will fall significantly.  I don't see anyway for a mechanical hard disk to compete with a SSD in the next 2-3 years.  They are too slow, prone to mechanical failure, use more electricity, and will be limited on storage capacity.

Regarding new storage disks formats (DVD Format), How would you like to have one of these?:

Sandisk announces 4TB SSD, hopes for 8TB next year.

"We see reaching the 4TB mark as really just the beginning and expect to continue doubling the capacity every year or two, far outpacing the growth for traditional HDDs," Manuel Martull, SanDisk's product & solutions marketing director, stated in an email reply to Computerworld.

I like the "curve around the edge" styling.

But the phones with curved displays are a little overkill.
