2501  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: bit-miner.com MIA on: March 07, 2018, 12:33:26 AM
If you don't mine yourself through some sort of miner hosting (such as at a colocation) or mine at home, you aren't mining. If you don't have actual control over your miners and you can't configure what worker account they mine to on a certain pool, etc, then chances are you're running into some sort of Ponzi scheme. There's no legit workaround to actual mining.

I am aware that sites such as Bitmain's Hashnest do exist and they're legitimate, but even Hashnest is often down and suffers from issues, but exceptions like it are far and few between.

What would really make my day is the option to hide posts from Newbies and Jr. Members.  Grin
Why would you do that? In plenty of subforums newer members still have perfectly valid questions and responses. I only ignore two or three people on the forum and it's been like that for me since the day I joined. If an option for this was added newer members would find it even harder to earn merits to reach their next rank.

Spam is nearly nonexistent in some subforums and rampant in others. We simply need to add moderators to some subforums or swap out moderators for more active ones (much simpler than adding 20+ people in to look at everything posted, which would be almost  unfeasible considering how many posts are made every second here), and a solution to revive spam-ridden subforums like Bitcoin and Altcoin discussion. Pretty much no actual discussion goes on there, just broken Google Translated English and pasted responses.

A solution for spam-ridden subforums would be the option to hide posts from Newbies and Jr. Members.  Roll Eyes
That doesn't change the fact that they'll just continue spamming useless posts (the only change being you won't see them), and in those subforums half or more of the people posting there are either member rank or up. Some more active moderation like I mentioned in my previous post would greatly help out the situation, and perhaps a sticky with rules regarding restating the same thing a million times would help. It's interesting to watch a thread with its question answered within the first five posts blow up to hundreds of pages there.
2503  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining rig from GTX 1050 TI on: March 06, 2018, 11:32:35 PM
You should be fine to mine something like Cryptonote for a while, but with only 4GB of memory stuff like Ethereum is out of the question.

As far as I've researched though the 1050s are not super great for mining overall.
Only 4GB? Even 3GB 1060 cards are still capable of mining Ethereum, and they're usually most profitable mining ETH, with the runner-up being Equihash. The 1050tis aren't as profitable currently on Ethereum compared to Zcash, but they sure are capable of mining ETH.

The 1050 Tis make around $25 per month on Zcash currently according to Nicehash and some other calculators I used, so assuming you get one for the price of $200 you break even in around 8 months with no changes to profitability (which will fluctuate, of course). I've noticed recently even the 1050tis have gone up in price, I recall seeing them sell for near or below $150 just a week or two ago and now they've climbed to $200 on Newegg.

The R9 series was profitable with mining for about as long as I can remember being in Crypto mining, and it still is. Past performance doesn't indicate future performance, though, especially with mining. Nobody knows if the 1050ti will be profitable even a year from now.
2504  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: CORSAIR - CX Series Modular CX750M 750W ATX Power Supply on: March 06, 2018, 11:08:54 PM
PSU deals have been pretty scarce recently, but this Seasonic 550W unit is available for just around $40 and is Gold rated which should save you a bit of money in the long run with mining. It's got just two PCIe 6-pin connectors, though. Note there is a rebate attached to this PSU but everything I've seen about it shows it's a good unit.

Link to deal: https://www.reddit.com/r/buildapcsales/comments/82eqfk/psu_seasonic_focus_series_ssr550fm_550w_80_gold/

IIRC the green CX PSUs were not good with internals and the ones with just black or grey coloring were the better ones. I'm not completely sure, so if I'm wrong, feel free to correct me.

2506  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Mining address on: March 06, 2018, 10:00:38 PM
Thank you.
I saw on a video that there were two different addresses on the same mining software, is that for management ease (coins sent to two wallets) or because it uses different pool?

That would be a specific configuration issue for whatever mining software you are talking about.  Likely its just different pools.  It it VERY common to have a primary pool defined and one or two backup pools defined.  Doing so protects you when the primary pool goes down (not that the major ones do very often), and allows you to continue to mine on one of the backups.  When the primary comes back up, most mining software will switch you back to that primary.

ps.  Ignore the scammer that replied, he/she/it will likely be banned soon.

Ok got it. thanks
in that case, can all the mined coins be sent to the same wallet?
Or is it recommended to have separate wallet for security purposes?
I generally send all my mining rewards to my cold wallet address (a Ledger Nano S) for the sake of convenience. Most people I know use one wallet for mining rewards; it's simpler for consolidating inputs into one wallet for lower fees.
2507  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: DragonMint B29 Blake256 Miner (Decred) on: March 06, 2018, 08:59:19 PM
Obelisk DCR1 for less than 1/5 the price and around 50% of DragonMint B29's hashrate seems like an easy decision to me.  Assuming Obelisk comes out first, the profitability will plummet and ROI time for DragonMint B29s will be massive.
Yeah, I don't expect any of these to sell if at all any sales are even made for the DragonMint. I don't know what Halong were thinking when they released the miner at this price... At least there's proof of it being real unlike some of their other miners previously. The Obelisk is currently sold out, but this is just absolutely ridiculous with pricing.
2508  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: DragonMint B29 Blake256 Miner (Decred) on: March 06, 2018, 05:46:08 PM
This miner is way too overpriced, the network difficulty will go sky high as soon as these machines are hashing.
Exactly my thoughts on this thing. It’s another Antminer A3 situation about to happen, but this time with a 10k$ price tag.

Yoshi is from MyRig, is he not? I recall messaging him a while back on Bitmainwarranty support and he responded to my message there.
2509  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Multiple instances of bmminer possible? on: March 06, 2018, 05:37:52 PM
Many of the older mining software, like cgminer, had a "balance" option that would allow you do split hash between pools.  It never worked particularly well.
I recall one of the first times I used the forum was investigating how to do this splitting of hashrate, and it involved either an Antminer S1 or S3, don’t remember now. Ever since the S5 or S4 I think they removed this function from all Antminers.
2510  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: March 06, 2018, 02:34:19 PM
Has anyone heard of a new generation of miners? It seems that it's time already, and the bitmain's behavior hints at their imminent appearance
Considering these expire sometime around May or something like that I bet that if they’re releasing a new generation of miners, then they’ll release it after the coupons expire, or when sales slow down / current stock is sold out and the S9 becomes barely profitable. You never know, though, Bitmain has made plenty of unexpected moves recently with the D3 and A3.
2511  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: What is your electric rate? on: March 06, 2018, 01:55:11 AM
About seven cents per kilowatt here in Northwest PA. I used to pay around 10 cents per kw in South Carolina, nice change moving to PA. It's also been relatively cold this year so the few miners I have left after selling most off have been running with no temp issues. Nice for heating the garage when the temps are in the teens or below.
2512  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: What Problems do new investors face when researching cryptocurrencies? on: March 05, 2018, 08:49:01 PM
Most people don’t look extremely deeply into ICOs and one piece of FUD could easily make a possible investor reconsider his/her decision, and it’s not always easy to find out what’s true and what’s false, especially in this day and age (it even happens on these forums all the time, just hop into Altcoin discussion). FUD’s my personal pick for the biggest issue for both investors and those who run ICOs.

Youre right they do not look too deep into ICOs. But since there are so many popping up everyday, one person will not have the time to dive in and read a bunch of whitepapers and check different team members LinkedIn profiles.

And now they are copytrading platforms, but I think the problem with that is people will give their money to someone and in this volatile market, lose their funds, and hastily back out of an investment. And if your first trade is bad and if it is from an investor you didnt fully trust, you will be reluctant to try that platform again
At the same time, those who only do two seconds of research really do deserve to get burned. There's still an influx of uninformed and misguided investors in Crypto, and it's important those people understand Crypto isn't just a money grab. Even I don't fully read whitepapers as I don't have the time to do so, but taking a quick peek and skimming through is sufficient most of the time.
2513  Other / Meta / Re: Are They Still Here? on: March 05, 2018, 05:11:08 PM
Looking into the Mining Hardware section and pretty much all of the Bitcoin Mining subforums, I can tell you everything is smoothly running and spam/misplaced posts and threads are actively being removed. If something truly does not belong and you report it the post, it will bemoved in time. The mods aren’t as active in certain subforums, but to be fair there’s thousands of posts to filter through in those subforums (BTC/Alt discussion).

2515  Other / Meta / Re: Is it too late for newbies to rank up on Bitcointalk? on: March 05, 2018, 02:58:43 PM
There are people like philipma in the Altcoin mining sections that are trying to spread merits out to members in undermerited areas, but I also do agree most sections of the forum outside technicals and Meta lack activity in merits. I’ll personally try to see if I can do something of the sort in BTC mining or another subform, and I encourage others to do so as well.

If you want to make your posting better and make your posting activity better as well, don’t burst post. It’s  better to spread out your ideas over a longer period of time than spamming a few every couple hours, and increases posting quality most of the time as well.
2516  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: Which is the best way to sell TRX? on: March 05, 2018, 02:35:12 PM
Thank you guys for your inputs!
I think Binance its a good option for me, because I buy my TRX there with ETH.
But once I have lets say 5,000 TRX, that I bought at 0.04 and the coin gets to 0.8...  is it wise to then trade them back to ETH?
Will I really get any profits doing so?

Yes in terms of dollars, but if ETH goes up massively with the price of TRX (very unlikely as ETH would have to go up 20x for this to happen), then there is a tiny chance you’ll get the same amount or less ETH back. It shouldn’t really be an issue, though.
2517  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: preferred shipping method on: March 05, 2018, 01:13:44 AM
FedEx has been pretty good in my experience of ordering from Bitmain, but like the user above said you're still going to pay for duties and handling from any method of shipment Bitmain offers. Some people report not receiving the fees immediately, but they always still come eventually.
2518  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Youtubers blaming crypto-currency miners for gaming shortage LIE on: March 04, 2018, 05:42:42 PM
People love finding a scapegoat to blame things on, and looking at the surface most people conclude mining absolutely must be the reason. Then unreliable computer hardware news outlets post articles about this, and eventually everyone believes it's miners (though mining is most definitely a part of the shortage, though it's not as big as most people make it out to be). It's not even just mining, this happens with many other things (in terms of 'fake news').

Interesting read.
2519  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Is Coinbase a safe wallet ? on: March 04, 2018, 05:06:14 PM
Warning! Coinbase is not a wallet it is an exchange so hackers can easily hack into coinbase wallets by knowing your email address.

Safe wallet are hardware wallets or the wallet which has the private key so no one can access your account without the private keys. The wallet like Electrum is best wallet to store our funds safely.
Unless you use Electrum on an airgapped computer with appropriate setup procedures, it's not going to be extremely secure. Even with a password on .dat files and such, treat Electrum on a live, network-connected computer like it's a mobile wallet.

If you use a hardware wallet like Trezor or Ledger, quadruple-check your seed to make sure it is written correctly. If you lose your wallet and come back to the wrong seed, you lose all your funds. After you've generated the seed and written it down, wipe the wallet and attempt to recover the empty wallet. If it's wrong you'll know and you'll be able to repeat the procedure. If it's right then you're set.
2520  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Bitmain's Released Antminer S9, World's First 16nm Miner Ready to Order on: March 04, 2018, 04:55:42 PM
Why it is 13 Th batch? Every new batch will come with lower hashrate and efficiency?
Probably some miners with chips that aren't up-to-spec that they're selling or just plain underperform; seems like they're trying to sell every Antminer they have right now. Most people seriously considering buying one of their miners right now have near-free electricity, though, so in such a scenario it wouldn't have a huge impact power-wise.
