2621  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Btc taxes on: July 22, 2013, 03:40:03 AM
Compliance is the biggest issue, not the will to comply. There aren't many BTC payment processors or businesses which enable you to easily extract information required in an audit.

Considering many (possibly most) BTC businesses operate without proper registration (at least in the US), the IRS may not even accept evidence from them - and don't expect the IRS officer to know how the fuck a link on blockchain.info proves a transaction.  Cheesy

It'll be interesting.... if Bitcoin continues to grow, there'll be quite a few new landmark cases.

At least there is always escrow to help legitimize things Smiley
Speaking of escrow, there is a list of providers @ https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=108716.0 though I would never hesitate to recommend John K, who will soon have no time to do anything other than handling online escrow transactions.  Smiley

I know for a fact that ineededausername's girlfriend has to put up with that. He sends her emails of his analysis of charts on the hour, every hour, and she's just sitting there wondering wtf he's talking about.

$150?!
2624  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: "Newbies" is the most dangerous subforum on this entire site! on: July 22, 2013, 02:53:44 AM
I still think service offers of any kind shouldn't be allowed in the newbie jail.
I still agree.  Smiley

I made a post asking for this (Long-term offers being moved out of Newbies section) among other reforms in the Donators subforum a couple months back @ https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=199523.0

Looks like it may've helped influence the forum WoT system, but I'd be very pleased to see business offers in the Newbies subforum banned outright.

When unsure, your best bet is to simply disregard anything from someone you don't trust. It's discriminatory, creates barriers to entry, and discourages people - but you should be looking out for your own good, not others'. "Giving someone a shot" is not a virtue, but a path toward ruin.

Always put yourself in the situation of someone on the street, and having someone approach you with a proposition. If a stranger came up starting an auction on "authentic Gucci bags" and two other people bid on it, wouldn't you likely walk away, thinking it's probably a scam? You'd instead want establishments - whether they're established individuals or businesses, and you'd want assurances provided by escrow. Always apply that kind of thinking when dealing with unknowns on the Internet, and you'll be better off.

And again we are down to the point where armed citizens would make a difference.
What have you done in 2002 when you have been stripped of your most important guaranteed rights to you where taken away with no supreme court ruling.
Waht have you done in 2006 and 2008?
What are you doing now that that the world is exposed to your governments crimes.
Ignorance is bliss.

Pray and hope we never need to use them.

M
I think his point is that they're never used in those critical times. The government sends off hundreds of thousands of Americans to protect the hegemony - and what happens? Where were the armed riots when the government sent our friends and families to die in war?The only serious defenses of liberty in the past century have been by lawyers. Everyone keeps redrawing lines once the government calls militias' bluffs.

Even if the federal government banned all firearms in one go, there would almost certainly be no full-scale rioting. Maybe a bunch of armed old farts will walk down a public street. Nobody in government is afraid of armed citizens until they drive through an impoverished neighborhood. Everyone else seems too worried about their image as cautious, responsible individuals who seem to only own guns on principle.

(not that I'm arguing for gun regulation, just don't think anyone can seriously say an armed US citizenry is pressuring government)
2628  Other / Meta / Re: Blocking obnoxious VMC advertising on: July 21, 2013, 10:07:15 AM
Adblock (plus or non) blocks "graphic" ads here, but leaves most of the text & simple hyperlink ones intact, along with some others following theymos' anti-AB specs. I don't mind them, though. Visual filters are easiest to set up and maintain. Smiley

ETA: Their ad happened to come up on posting, though... looks pretty mild. Nice non-offensive colors, smallish text.
2629  Economy / Speculation / Re: There will be blood on: July 21, 2013, 07:37:18 AM
What the Hell do you guys view daytrading as? An epic, seemingly-endless struggle between a couple ax-wielding maniacs?

Yeah, I know you guys.... sitting around in your offices with toy soldiers making sound effects to yourself while staring at real-time charts, hyped up on energy drinks. Your wife and kids are asleep, and suddenly you shout "BOOM!" The family wakes up to discover a 1kBTC ask wall was FUCKING DEVOURED and the price consequently rose $.25. They go back to sleep, justifiably annoyed, to awaken an hour later to "C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!!!"  Cheesy
2630  Economy / Digital goods / Re: residual income wallet for sale. on: July 21, 2013, 05:44:03 AM
So... a loan? 20% of principal for 12 months, 1% of principal each month thereafter until you die.  Tongue
2631  Economy / Economics / Re: Detroit Becomes Largest U.S. City To File Bankruptcy on: July 21, 2013, 05:14:57 AM
I am unfortunatelly not sure about that. I know some things are more free there in US than here in Europe (some not on the other hand), but I guess by avoiding taxes, all their fascist registers etc., not recognizing SS homeland security forcers and other crap, I'd meet the SS homeland security forces sooner rather than later and probably end in some concentration camp special detention center.
As long as you aren't transmitting or receiving money outside your own country, I can't imagine they'd ever notice you. Just fire off some shots every now and then, set up road blockades with threatening graffiti and a barbed wire fence around the perimeter, and the police'll declare it too dangerous to patrol.

I mean - yeah, you'll probably eventually either be gunned down or imprisoned by federal forces, but YOLO. (or -- wait... so you should duck responsibilities and live a short, irresponsible life because you're mortal? I've never understood "YOLO"....)
2632  Economy / Economics / Re: Detroit Becomes Largest U.S. City To File Bankruptcy on: July 21, 2013, 04:35:00 AM
Any chance to buy a few blocks and declare independency on federal govenrment?
Go for it. You can recognize the government as equally as they recognize you, and probably won't see official action for years, unless you're murdered... then it'd take a decade at least.
2633  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Litecoin on MTGOX? on: July 21, 2013, 04:03:10 AM
Gox can't even handle USD -- you think they're going to add MORE currencies?!

Rumor came from https://www.facebook.com/MtGox/posts/484532824964463 #6
2634  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: 4,5 hash rate... correct? or not configured properly? on: July 21, 2013, 03:58:54 AM
Shouldn't mine BTC on laptops. Definitely shouldn't mine LTC. They usually aren't designed to dissipate heat quickly enough.

Low hashrate for a mobile GPU should be expected. 4.5MH/s does seem kind of low, though, if that's what you meant.
2635  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: What are the two unregulated "Money Transmitter" states? (USA) on: July 21, 2013, 03:06:57 AM
"Forty-eight US states regulate money transmitters although the laws vary from one state to the other.[3] Most of the states[4] require a surety bond with widely ranging amounts from as little as $25,000 to over $1 million and maintaining a minimum capital requirement."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money_transmitter

What are the two free states?

Thanks
Did you do that just to direct us to an MSB lawyer with virtual currency know-how? http://moneytransmitterlicense.blogspot.com/  Cheesy

Lot of the links are broken. All 50 states listed, so dunno which two don't have MSB laws... Kansas and NY don't seem to have a pinpoint on the state-by-state map...

https://www.paypal-media.com/licenses
Paypal has licenses for everywhere but South Carolina and NY.

So, looking like definitely NY (which seems really, really unlikely - but I guess possible), and either South Carolina or Kansas.

ETA: http://www.shajlaw.com/newyorkmoneyservicebusinesslicense.html Paypal must have some way to get around MSB in NY, but I'm pretty sure I counted 48 states and 2 non-states in PP's list, which'd indicate there's only one state without MSB license requirements.

From map on first page linked:
South Carolina: Currently no regulation
WY and NY definitely have regulation, though.
ETA2: It looks like KS does have MSB requirements, but are apparently very difficult to find Cheesy
ETA3: SC definitely has something on the books... I'm getting tired of combing through bureaucratic crap at this point, though. Smiley

2638  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Portion of Bitcoin enthusiasts who are into Ayn Rand? on: July 21, 2013, 01:46:29 AM
Yeesh - first on the agenda in the new forums: decent polling code. Jaw opened when I saw how few read her books (like her or not) before realizing the results are borked. I spent most of my last two years in high school reading her books and writing reports for independent classes. Fountainhead's required in many US AP classes. Came to like her less the more I read. I don't think she ever topped We The Living (was the third book I read, after the major two). Everything else bored me and was dragged out many times more than needed.

Bitcoin's just a tool. It enables many things, including liberties which weren't easily-obtainable before, but it can also be a tool for what Rand would consider as evil. I don't consider Bitcoin being ideological, so I don't think it could be compared to Rand's ideas, books, or personality in any way. Though... if practical results (right now, and since the beginning of Bitcoin) could be associated to any particular person's ideology, it'd have to be Spooner.
2639  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Assault weapon bans on: July 21, 2013, 01:31:59 AM
I guess in the USA, instead of cars, everyone should be driving an M1A since the US Army has such  MBTs?  Also everyone need a Minuteman?
Abrams are expensive. Guns are cheap. Pretty much everyone in the US can afford a formidable gun and a small stockpile of ammo. You're also way less likely to ever see use out of a tank. Opportunity cost -- we aren't that stupid!  Tongue
2640  Other / Meta / Re: Exchange rate on top of forum on: July 21, 2013, 01:15:03 AM
Fwiw, almost every browser has a ticker icon plugin/extension/whatever, and can often be configured for which exchange(s) you want data from, and sometimes will handle alternative virtual currencies like Litecoin, Devcoin, and similar.
