1941  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How much to put bitcoin TO DA MOON (or the ISS or a satellite)? on: November 22, 2013, 10:04:41 PM
Ultimate Bitcoin-powered hotspot. I'd pay to be able to work on getting a decent satellite ISP accepting BTC going. The draw to Bitcoin would be insane, and the satellite(s) could hold copies of the blockchain for relatively quick distribution. Too bad there's no cheap/easy way to make it immediately accessible to everyone like a WiFi hotspot. How cool would it be if you could just plug a USB dongle in and access 4+ different satellite hotspots?
1942  Other / Meta / Re: Ability to 'follow' individuals, and see a stream of their posts on: November 22, 2013, 09:41:25 PM
Someone launched a free service a few weeks ago which did about what you want. You'd select a usernames and/or threads and it'd update via RSS. Can't remember name. Google search site:bitcointalk.org with some keywords like "RSS" and "tracking" should turn it up.
1943  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: 194,993 BTC transaction on: November 22, 2013, 09:22:19 PM
I have solace knowing that this is not going to be a dump as it is an old school long time holder.

Or was confiscated from an old school long time holder.

Confiscated implies some wrongdoing. I see nothing to warrant an accusation like that.
There's nothing to imply "rightdoing." This could be Queen Elizabeth II's stash of Bitcoins from selling cocaine on Silk Road for all we know.
1944  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does anyone else think bitcoin is a stupid name? on: November 22, 2013, 09:15:45 PM
I immediately associated "bit" with "bittorrent," too - coin with cash. Decentralized cash. Seemed pretty straightforward.
1945  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: BitcoinQT enforcing a fee of 0.004 fee? on: November 22, 2013, 08:16:16 PM
I'd guess the transaction you want to send is made up of tons of tiny/dust inputs.
1946  Other / Off-topic / Re: Does anyone here even lift? on: November 22, 2013, 07:53:11 PM
If I wanted to lift things all day, I'd go back to working in a factory.

Thanks for the speedy response!
1948  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: November 21, 2013, 08:39:54 PM
I was helping a newcomer set up an Armory wallet (he's on .89.9x). He wanted to create a paper backup. He hadn't yet created an address for it.

When he went to create the paper backup, only the root key was printed out, not the chain code. Is the chain code essential for importing the wallet later?

ETA: -And could you tell me why Windows XP isn't supported? Is it just because you don't have it to test on for each new release, or are there significant known issues?
1949  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 0.15 BTC per transcript of LetsTalkBitcoin on: November 21, 2013, 08:08:52 PM
Bit OT: Could someone give me the name of a web service which'll accept an http link, download it, then host it for me?
(or if Adam/Crystal could give me FTP access, that'd be cool -- I'm currently VPS-less)

The vast majority of my time "proofreading" is actually spent stopping and restarting the audio download from Soundcloud because they don't support resume and are particularly quick to time out a connection (my connection isn't reliable, so I can only download 1-2 per day, sometimes none).

Y'know, you're downloading a 41MB file @ a rate of 4.1kb/s, and an hour in, you have to restart. Frustrating, put mildly.  Cheesy
1950  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 0.15 BTC per transcript of LetsTalkBitcoin on: November 21, 2013, 04:13:56 PM
I wanna try a new rule to see if it can improve readability in transcripts. I think it might lead to more consistent decisions on new vs. compound sentences. If it ends up causing problems, I'll just fix it in proofreading.

From now on, if a sentence starts with a conjunction ("so," "and," "but," etc) in audio, always remove it on the transcript. If the sentence doesn't make sense without that conjunction, you should transcribe the pause as a compound sentence (... with the conjunction, so like this).

(if you've already started in on a transcript, don't change what you're doing until/unless you work on a new transcript.)

ETA: this replaces "*Please start sentences beginning with a conjunction with a hyphen. -So, this way, you aren't as tempted to create a 500-word run-on sentence. Ideally, just leave the conjunction out, but I understand it's hard to ignore words when transcribing."
I'm trying hard, but I hardly understand Wink
If a speaker in the audio begins a sentence with "so", "and", "but" etc., this word should be left out of the transcript?
Trying to give a (made-up) example here:

Audio: "...pause...so, basically, I'm trying to say ..."
Transcript: "Basically, I'm trying to say ..."

Right?
Yeah. Other part of the rule would be:

Audio: "I have a dog who eats chocolate ice cream *pause* and won't stop."
Sometimes in transcriptions, it's written: "I have a dog who eats chocolate ice cream. And won't stop."
With the never-start-a-sentence-with-a-conjunction rule, it has to be written as (if wrong): "I have a dog who eats chocolate ice cream. Won't stop."

I'm hoping that'll encourage this in the transcript: "I have a dog who eats chocolate ice cream and won't stop." - or with a comma between "cream" and "and."

Hmmm, I was supposed to purchase an Avalon from pokerme using local pickup. I wonder how they were planning on scamming me?
Tire iron?
1952  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Selling BTC for USD? on: November 20, 2013, 08:59:53 PM
I'm in finance. I've seen tons of companies like this come and go. I've even provided the capital for some. Your assurances in no way reassure me.
Heh - I'm pretty sure he was being sarcastic.

Your best bet is to not use a service, but find someone you can meet and exchange physical cash with. No SAR reports from bank or payment processor, no uncertainty once "payment is made," no other nonsense - just a simple exchange. I think there's been one incident in all of Bitcoin where one went sour because (allegedly) someone was beaten up by the other guy... in Ireland or something, I think, maybe a year ago.

Putting money on a US Bitcoin exchange (or any US-based, BTC-oriented entity which takes and can hold money) right now is like putting your dick in a meat grinder and praying someone will give you money instead of grinding it up.

Umm... I think I only just caught this. How often is Andreas talking near a chicken coop? In e14, ~33m in, it's very clear he's next to a bunch of chickens. It just gave me this image where he's walking around in a coop, talking about virtual currencies with a headset on, and I had to pause the audio because I couldn't stop laughing. Cheesy
1955  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: SERIOUSLY? Bitcoin Singapore 2013 - NOT What I Expected (Or Hoped For) on: November 20, 2013, 06:44:29 PM
That would be pretty disappointing, especially considering the costs of attending a conference. Not really sure what to tell you if you can't find something equivalent to a MeetUp in your area. Get used to browsing the forum, I guess. Sorry you had to spend a day with those people.
1956  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Paying assassins and drug dealers with bitcoins in 2010...... on: November 20, 2013, 06:22:23 PM
NO. MOST of them would have done CASHOUT.
Especially the drug dealers since they operate as a business and need to buy new inventory. I'd guess assassins are more likely to do it as a kind of hobby. Oh, well - so we have a few more billionaire assassins.  Cheesy
1957  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin crashes when those investing realise 2 things on: November 20, 2013, 05:07:53 PM
Knowing that a dollar bill can be divided into 100 pennies does not change my opinion of dollars.

And what if it was decided one day that it could be divided into 1000?

Really dude? I mean, really? I can't get my $1 chicken sandwich for 1000 of whatever those units are of my dollar? That's bullshit.
Actually... that argument would have merit. Coins aren't legal tender, and it's considered rude as fuck to pay for something in pennies (if the store will even tolerate it).

If there were sub-pennies, which'd be utterly worthless by any definition (really, a penny is worthless), and you tried using them to pay for something, a cashier would probably throw the coins in your face. It costs the store more money to have the cashier wait for you to count, and then to double-check than the profit from the transaction is worth.

Bitcoin kind of has this problem, in a way. In calculating fees, 1BTC is way more valuable than a hundred-million satoshis, which I don't think would even be spendable. Because of the cost to store that shit in the blockchain, it will probably never be spendable unless a bitcoin costs something like $1B each. In a way, bitcoins become less fundamentally valuable as they increase in price, because your average transaction amount is going to decrease, while fees for smaller transactions is more harsh than with larger transactions (or at the least, static). We need more scalability solutions in place (even if it is just a bunch of universities hosting the full blockchain as a public service in exchange for donations) before Bitcoin starts increasing the number of digits after the radix point and decreasing fees.
1958  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: "Real" full-node bandwdith consumption on: November 19, 2013, 01:32:31 PM
Where did you get the stats from?

I am running a relatively large node (200+ connections, 50 kbps upload, uncapped download) and would be interested in graphing something like that.  I probably will be moving my main node to datacenter and connecting to it via secure RPC calls.  The client locally will just be "dumb wallet".
I'm using http://www.netlimiter.com/ for my monitoring/throttling, and the pictures posted by Kludge look very much alike, I wouldn't be surprised he was using it too.
Yep. Wouldn't mind hearing about alternatives, though. Limiting is nice, but it'd also be nice to give applications (or even ports) "minimum guarantees."
1959  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 0.15 BTC per transcript of LetsTalkBitcoin on: November 19, 2013, 01:09:19 PM
I hope Kluge is alright  Undecided
Last I checked, he was. Power outages for the rest of the week, though Roll Eyes
Awesomely enough, power came back late last night. I called the electric company after hearing a Friday estimate on the radio and they told me to not expect electricity until Saturday.

Unfortunately, we started cooking all the meats in the freezer since we were expecting it to rot. Couldn't light oven without taking it apart, so boiled a whole turkey. Was like chewing a roll of tape. Angry

Only fatality was a "barn kitten" which froze to death in a flower pot after being too stubborn to leave his favorite sleeping spot when the sheeting over the tiny greenhouse was shred apart by the wind. Daughter's staying with her grandma today. Should be able to get through all the unpaid transcripts and a few extras today. (.odt in .zip is fine, btw)
1960  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 0.15 BTC per transcript of LetsTalkBitcoin on: November 18, 2013, 01:07:28 AM
Chilling out in the basement safe room. Power's out in all of Bumfucksville. One of those nice ones which make it obvious how neglected the infrastructure here is, where the power's still delivered to the house, but in wildly fluctuating amounts which damage electronics until you shut off the breaker. So... assuming we aren't sucked up by a tornado, the house doesn't catch fire, and isn't blown apart - back "soon!"  Roll Eyes
