1921  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: IRS and tax issues on: November 23, 2013, 09:33:34 PM
You can maybe avoid taxes, but you're still legally obligated to pay them. If it's a significant amount, maybe they'll take unorthodox measures to find you.

Cash in-person can work, FedExing cash can work, maybe gift cards, whatever... It's important you don't transmit details of the transaction online. So, if someone's sending you cash for BTC, never say how much cash was sent or what the exchange rate was, and ideally, you'd just securely send them back a USB stivk with a privkey or wallet instead of transmitting any of that data online. The receiver of the USB stick would ideally not move the bitcoins to a wallet he controls, so it's not obvious an exchange occurred. You can later say it was for a higher or lower exchange rate depending on who's being investigated/prosecuted at the time. This requires a significant trust bond between the two conspiring transactors, of course. These are the same principles used in other tax scams. You sell a car for $5,000, but say the transaction was $2,000 so there's less tax burden. Some people do the same for land, airplanes, whatever.

Obviously, you don't want to deposit cash you receive, because you'd have to explain its origin in an audit. The burden of evidence is on you with the IRS. It's generally cheaper and involves less prison time to just pay what the gunmen say you owe than to try defrauding them.

Even if the hard drive is physically in pieces, it isn't necessarily impossible to recover the wallet.

Thanks to Adam's awesome help, proofreading will get done much faster. 9 finished (amazing work -- lowest FP score of any, by far), onto 30.

(PR queue still on pg10 and being updated. Bothered theymos about adding it to pg1 after qwk did -- feel free to bother him again for us. Smiley)

if we all rode bicycles - the roads would be charming.

pollution would be much less.

and dickheads who need to speed/drive like shit wouldnt kill so many people needlessly EVERY DAY
I doubt it. Because everyone's moving relatively slow and the road would be quite congested (four people in a car takes less space than four people on individuals bicycles, and then buses... freight would take multitudes more people...), road rage, I'd guess, would be much more likely to result in gunshots. People pedaling slow would probably just be shoved off. We'd all have eye patches and gauze over our faces (if we aren't just shot to death).
1925  Bitcoin / Project Development / Re: [BOUNTY] 0.15 BTC per transcript of LetsTalkBitcoin on: November 23, 2013, 03:28:34 AM
May I please reserve episode 48?

And out of curiosity, those of you who have done some episodes, about how long did it take you? Say, for a one-hour episode, could you do it in two hours?

I type comfortably at 75wpm and I've hit 94wpm in a one-minute long typing speed test, I think I ought to be able to make this profitable.
Plan on 3+.

I won't let my coins touch windows

+1 Ok I do admit to backing up my wallet.dat encrypted and then encrypted again with Truecrypt on a Windows 3.1 computer (Pentium I) and also on a 286 running MS DOS

Now seriously DRM infected/locked devices and yes this includes an Android device that is not rooted do pose a very serious threat to Bitcoin. The only solutions for mobile I can see is a rooted Android device or a device running an Operating System that has GPL v3 code deep in the OS that it is impossible to use a locked bootloader without violating the copyright license. Ubuntu phone/mobile is the most promising here. The trouble with Android that is not rooted is that manufacturer can at any time disable the option of installing outside the Android market since they and not the owner control root.
Do any companies actually prohibit installing software outside the buggy Play store? (asked in earnest -- I honestly have no idea)

The chickens are 100% from my side Smiley We have Chickens, Ducks and Guinea Fowl - got our first rooster about a month ago, I think he's been on a show or two so far Wink
Okay. Cheesy We had a goat not too long ago. She really needed another to keep her company, but I wasn't interested in putting more money in for a hobby which only returns milk I found myself unfond of (and she always found a way to break through the fencing...), so she went to a 4H student who has a fair collection of goats. Anyway, definitely understand it. Glad neighbor handles egg production for the area, though.  Smiley

Bit OT: Could someone give me the name of a web service which'll accept an http link, download it, then host it for me?
(or if Adam/Crystal could give me FTP access, that'd be cool -- I'm currently VPS-less)

The vast majority of my time "proofreading" is actually spent stopping and restarting the audio download from Soundcloud because they don't support resume and are particularly quick to time out a connection (my connection isn't reliable, so I can only download 1-2 per day, sometimes none).

Y'know, you're downloading a 41MB file @ a rate of 4.1kb/s, and an hour in, you have to restart. Frustrating, put mildly.  Cheesy

We upload all our episodes to youtube - Does that work better?
http://www.youtube.com/letstalkbitcoinchan

Also, the show *is* a podcast, not only can you download each episode from the soundcloud page (click the Download button) but if you subscribe with any normal podcast program you'll be able to download any/all episodes of LTB and play them back in whatever software you want.

Does that fit what you need?
Oh, cool - I totally missed the RSS feed (I kept looking through SoundCloud wondering which freakin' button I was missing). That seems to be working well, and it keeps it all in WinAmp, which is nice. Thanks!
ETA: Awesome! Downloaded the entire set overnight. 74/75 succeeded, and downloaded the failed one successfully this morning!

(-But Andreas was near a bunch of chickens, right? I didn't mishear that? I'm not crazy?) Tongue
1929  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: MULTIBIT on: November 23, 2013, 02:11:20 AM
Yeah, OP, that's fine (and no, you shouldn't need to update private keys unless maybe you create new addresses - Idunno if Multibit wallets are deterministic or not). Armory's safer and more convenient if you have the RAM (with the new version, you don't need 4GB+, but still 2GB+, I believe) and ability to keep up with the blockchain.

When you want to do a transaction, you'd plug a USB stick in the online computer (which has only a watch-only wallet), fill out the transaction info (saved as a file), move the USB stick with unsigned tx to the offline computer (with the real wallet), sign the transaction, move it back to the online computer and broadcast the transaction. Your hand is held throughout the procedure and it takes less than a minute, all without exposing your password online (unless you have some type of well-done virus on the USB stick, maybe).
1930  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: Help increase network security, old hardware accepted on: November 23, 2013, 01:40:38 AM
Running obsolete hardware decreases the profitability of running newer, efficient hardware, preventing that efficient hashpower from going on the network.

It's a free market equilibrium thing where, long-term, the network isn't any more secure and you're losing money over a grid tie-in or from running efficient ASICs.

You might think "oh, well my hashpower isn't going to significantly impact others' decisions to purchase new mining hardware" - and to an extent, you're right. The impact's as insignificant as the security provided to the network.

/enthusiasm-quashing dick

A profitable alternative would be hosting others' efficient miners, who would be quite pleased to have access to cheap electricity (I'd guess you also have battery backup and the potential to use grid electricity if you had to, providing a relatively high level of redundancy, decreasing downtime).
1931  Economy / Economics / Re: What kind of BTC businesses are MISSING? on: November 23, 2013, 01:21:13 AM
Internet service provider would be a huge step for Bitcoin. I think it would be revolutionary for Bitcoin.
It'd be quite easy, too (... well - for an existing ISP). Super-low maintenance compared to accepting cash. If there isn't payment on due date, the gateway user software simply locks the the user out. Pay monthly rate later, you're able to use the network again -- no fussing with CSRs.

Would be great with a WISP, and allow a dramatically more frictionless on-demand service.

As for needs, insurance is probably toward the top of the list. Insurance and an exchange serving the US which isn't always on the verge of being hacked or shut down. The cheap, easy-to-do reselling stuff is already covered.
1932  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Rasiel's Dragon on: November 23, 2013, 12:51:16 AM
Why not? My transaction with 0 fees went into the blockchain.. :O

Anyway wouldn't they at least cause massive amounts of traffic between miners etc?
Bitcoin has multiple different ways of preventing spam based on age (I don't recall age scheme off top of my head) and BTC value of tx. Maybe you could make an impact if you had 1M BTC.

Peers connected to you would simply reject your transaction if it doesn't meet the minimum fee (there are two potential minimum fees - a minimum fee to relay the transaction, and a minimum fee set by pools to actually include the tx in a block -- only in certain instances is the minimum 0BTC). Mining pools would likely never see them.

If everyone rode motorcycles, the people would gain control of their rights.

And everyone would be happy.  We would have world peace.

this should be your platform for when you run for president.
Hm. Triggered a memory. A year or so ago, didn't you propose that everyone should be given a horse, dank?

1935  Other / Politics & Society / Re: assassination market -- legitimate tit-for-tat as per the N.A.P., or coercion? on: November 23, 2013, 12:12:52 AM
Would be (is?) government honeypot. Especially after DPR, I don't think anyone's stupid enough to try hiring an assassin online without a personal reference from a highly-trusted long-time friend.

Before FH shut down, there were all sorts of retarded assassin websites which looked like those old 199x Yahoo starter sites. They were good for a chuckle. If there are any real assassins out there, I don't know of them, and I occasionally like to see what's going on in the underground. Maybe for the best.

I'd buy a paper wallet if it held that many BTC.

Where is the best place to obtain a paper wallet?
Your printer, generally.
1937  Other / Politics & Society / Re: spooks on: November 22, 2013, 11:12:00 PM
Between Pirate and DPR, forum screenshots have appeared multiple times in court dockets. I don't think there are a bunch of government agents on the forum telling people to pay taxes, but governments, in some form, obviously look around the forum from time to time (or at least use sent screenshots as evidence).

They (FBI in particular) have a habit of discovering and contacting people in the community who are fairly private. Whether that's from being on the forum or somewhere else, it seems pretty plausible they've infiltrated the Bitcoin community to some degree, but probably only to get information on certain people.
1938  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Does Google have Bitcoin by the balls? on: November 22, 2013, 10:56:15 PM
Allow third-party apps to run in Android, download app to phone from website, install app. Problem solved.

ETA: I actually normally do this because Google Play is unreliable whenever I've used it (waits what seems like a completely random time to actually download the app, between immediately and 30m in some cases). It's much faster for me to grab the .apk off a site.
1939  Bitcoin / Armory / Re: Armory - Discussion Thread on: November 22, 2013, 10:46:45 PM
Another issue from newcomer on .89.9x

In his setup, QT is run by Armory, not run independently. When it syncs to 100%, Armory switches over to offline mode. If he restarts Armory, the same thing happens (syncs, then switches to offline mode). Trying to get more info (anything in particular which'd be helpful?), but that's what I have on it right now. Any ideas?

ETA: Nm, just didn't notice "Building database."
