2681  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Doublespend Protection Insurance on: November 03, 2011, 10:42:40 PM
Doublepspend insurance is not needed yet.  Either the item is too cheap and the attacker could get a larger reward by mining with his hardware, or the item is probably not going to be delivered before the doublespend is detected.

Maybe in the future someone will sell a database or software for BTC that is expensive, and deliver it too soon but I don't know of any serious attack possibility that would be financially worthwhile.
2682  Other / Off-topic / Re: 1GH/s, 20w, $500 — Butterflylabs, is it a scam? on: November 03, 2011, 09:32:35 PM
Looking fake to me. No markings on chips ? No real incentive to develop real BTC mining product now. More like a scam it seems.

Why do they not submit proof ? Because they don't have proof for a scam. Simple.

This thread reminds me of a long thread on a car site, where most of the people said the car was a fake, and it turned out real.  Lots of analysis of the pictures, including people who were CERTAIN that it was a photoshop job, with detailed graphical markups of the (perceived) problems in the pictures.

Bump for changes.
2684  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] 12 Corsair 750W PSUs on: November 02, 2011, 02:54:36 AM
likely they will sell 70 to 80 shipped each thats what i see across many boards

Jen

One of the problems you will have is that while $100 is not a bad price for THAT specific power supply, there are a lot of 750W supplies that are good (not the junk no-name ones) that are much cheaper.  I used mostly rocketfish 900w that I paid $50 each for.  None have died, all in use all the time.  I do not push them too hard, I treat them like 750W supplies.
2685  Economy / Goods / Re: [WTS] Mining Rigs and parts updated, Prices Lowered 11/1! on: November 02, 2011, 02:50:18 AM
I am interested but your prices are too high.  I could build those rigs for similar to the price you listed, with new parts.  I would be interested with prices 40% lower.
2686  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If Greece defaults/collapses anything is possible on: November 02, 2011, 02:35:00 AM
It seems impossible to pay but in reality there's a lot more that can happen... looking at the history books there's no limit to the inhumanity of what can happen over debt. Perhaps a group of muslim countries could buy half the country and call it Palestine!

They should default ASAP like Argentina did in 2002. That will be hard too though. When Argentina did many middle class people in particular couldn't get drugs and died evicted.

It could be really bad, or it could be like Iceland's default.  It had winners and loosers, but it did not cause a long term meltdown.

2687  Other / Politics & Society / Re: If Greece defaults/collapses anything is possible on: November 01, 2011, 09:34:23 PM
Greece should default.  They really are too far gone to do anything else.  All of these 'bailouts' just hide the problem and even continue Greece to keep building more debt.

2689  Economy / Lending / Re: USD loan in BTC $500-$3000 6% annual rate on: October 31, 2011, 05:26:37 AM
You could put the loan on Propser and then link us to it here.  Those of us that invest on Propser could buy it up.

I tried that last week. They quoted 18% which is higher then I am paying now.  I guess my 15.x rate from B of A is not so bad.  I could pay more interest on a BTC loan, but not much more.  If I had to buy the coins to pay the loan, I would be paying fees to the exchange which unfortunately makes this less of a deal.
2690  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Boycott anti-bitcoiners movement. You discriminate Bitcoin, we boycott you. on: October 30, 2011, 04:01:39 AM
I do not like paypal but need to use it.  I do not like ebay but need to use it.

Bitcoin interferes (or at least they think it does) with their business models.  So I can see why and really don't even have a problem with them not using it.  They do not allow google checkout and there are very few REAL reasons why google checkout would not be good for their customers.
2691  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: someone fucked up and lost ALOT of money on: October 29, 2011, 03:50:40 AM
There is some discussion about having miners reject bad transactions.  Wouldn't that just cause a huge split in the network if only half the people upgraded the client and then that happened?
2692  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Free computers powered by Bitcoin. on: October 29, 2011, 01:23:35 AM
Would it be profitable for a company to embed forced gpu-based Bitcoin miners into PC motherboards/whole PCs and sell them to computer manufacturers and/or consumers very cheaply or even for free?

In the dot com boom I received one of those computers that was free (really!) with ads running mandatory according to the terms of service.  The company lost money and in the end turned over the machines to the people (me) who received them.

You could do the same with bitcoin, but right with the price of coin it would not make business sense.  The payback would be too long, along with many risks such as the machines being modified or not being powered on.
2693  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The myth about "free electricity" in winter on: October 28, 2011, 10:53:32 PM
You can't vent natural gas fumes directly into a living space... and that's not what that gas log burner does.

Yes you can. Google "ventfree gas logs" or "natural gas IR heater".

I didn't mean an natural gas IR  eater works exactly the same. I mean it is also 100% efficient and can be used to heat a home without venting heat outside.  A 30KW ventfree gas log and a 30KW natural gas IR heater will both put 30KW of thermal energy into the room at 100% efficiency.  Gas logs look nicer but are more expensive.

I have been using ventfree gas logs for 10 years now.  Natural gas when burnt completely produces only CO2 and water vapor.  I would recommend a CO dectector but I would also recommend that for any gas appliance.  It also may be against building code in some parts of the country which don't understand science.

Quote
EDIT:  That open gas burner still vents into a chimney or pipe.  You'll kill yourself from carbon monoxide (or carbon dioxide?) poisoning if you don't vent it at all.

No it doesn't.  There is no vent in that firebox.  CO is dangerous which is why you should have a CO detector.  Vent free log will only produce CO if it doesn't have sufficient oxygen (incomplete burning) but then again so will your natural gas stove or oven.  Gas logs have a ODS (oxygen depletion sensor) which should cutoff when oxygen level drops.  Always good to have them checked and cleaned (just like a furnace).
Here is a link:
http://www.fastfireplaces.com/empire-breckenridge-deluxe-vent-free-firebox.html

Vent free used to be illegal in Baltimore but just in the past few years code was changed (harmonized?) to a more national standard and they are now allowed.  Vent free is in most places 5x cheaper then heating with resistance electric heat due to the low cost of natural gas and the near 100% efficiency.  Vent free does have other drawbacks besides the CO2 risk, it puts a lot of humidity in the air, actually enough to do damage to items in the long term.

I have a vent free gas heater in a bathroom, which would be humid anyhow.
2694  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Dangerous State of Bitcoin (.com) on: October 28, 2011, 02:27:30 AM
Most nationalized companies tend to have higher prices as they are a complete monopoly with little interest in driving down cost ... what is the point.

Still waiting for the name of this 500% company ... unless you just want to admit it doesn't exist.

I agree with most of your points but there are lots of 500% companies.

Most of them are luxury/optional catarogies and can do 500% because of creative designs or marketing.  Your main points would still be valid as most of these items are OPTIONAL purchases.

2695  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Slush and his relation to DDoS attackers on: October 27, 2011, 11:24:25 PM

Really you see nothing wrong in the way he did it screwing over everyone else who as I have said did it in the open allowing everyone a fair chance to do the merged. Well all you slush ass kissers can continue on your merry way then till the next time he pulls something underhanded then you can kiss it some more.. You know the only benefit that those of us who supported the merged mining had was the extra BTC we could make from the NMC and like the little scumbag he is he schemed them up for his pool and his benefit screwing us over. We never had the chance to mine at that big pool and get any of that coin as we were never informed the scam was on until people started asking what the hell is going on here.

Do people need to inform you first before they turn on new powerful rigs?  Do people need to inform you first before they start undercutting or out performing the competition?
2696  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The Dangerous State of Bitcoin (.com) on: October 27, 2011, 11:21:44 PM
This is how socialists actually think.

And you need to falsely demonize socialists in this thread because?

2697  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Slush and his relation to DDoS attackers on: October 27, 2011, 03:44:43 AM
Yeha spelling and grammar nazi when he implemented the merged mining contrary to everyone else he did it in secret with no announcement so people who actually would have been there for the merged had no chance to get that boost to their earning instead they were stuck on the smaller pools who were getting next to none of the blocks he was scamming up for his pool.
Again, second time now, he did not do it in secret.  There is evidence to prove this.  This issue is over.

In case you are too thick to get it no one but his already existing pool members got to benefit from his actions as they never had the chance to do so.
Why does he have to do things that benefit people OUTSIDE of his pool?   You are just nuts this one.  He did things to benefit his own members.  Sounds like the way it should be to me, and it makes you seem really thick!

It was only after people starting asking the question just what scumbag pool was scooping all the coins was it revealed it was the slush pool.

Now you are re-writing history.
2698  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: The myth about "free electricity" in winter on: October 27, 2011, 02:41:21 AM
Also consider though, that many older homes do not use heat pumps.  I own a 1950's home, and it would cost somewhere in the neighborhood of $7000 to retrofit with a heatpump, which I simply cannot afford at this point in my life.  So, I am stuck with 1:1 electric heat.

I will use wood for heating when I can, as we have a fireplace, but I am not often home to start or maintain a fire either, which means electric must be used for heat the majority of the time.

So, for me, mining isn't "free", but it is certainly better than turning on the wall heaters and getting no Bitcoins for it!

I'll be turning my miners back on as soon as I have a proper wireless solution for them...

Consider both mini split systems (which have install cost) as well as window heat pumps which do not if you can put them in the window/wall yourself.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/LG-LW1210HR-12-000-BTU-Window-Air-Conditioner-heat-/160558003778?pt=Air_Conditioner&hash=item256200b642

I am not recommending this specific unit, but this gives you an idea of what is out there.  I have an 18000 BTU heating/cooling one.  These can pay off vs electric heating in less then one heating season because they are 2-4x more efficient then resistance heat.

Thanks Zhoutong,

I see my stops get triggered much more easily than I intend. I'm curious if you are willing to discuss your thought on spreads, your risk margins, cut, future volume:spread expectations, etc. I fully respect your need and desire to make money. I wonder, however, if you wouldn't make more money by reducing your rake. I strongly believe I (and most any active trader) would make more trades (by an order of magnitude or two) if the spread were one half or a quarter.

Join the
Spread Is Too Damn High Party
by placing this post in your sig. (minus the quote!)

I am not against you posting that in your sig but....

Just stop using the damn service and pull your coins out.  That will do more to encourage the owner to reduce the spread.   The high spread is the reason why I stopped using the service.

Your intensions may have been good who knows since you never bothered to announce them publicly, but the way you implemented the merged mining was in an underhanded dirty little way...

Are you re-writing history?  He did announce plans publicly, just not here.  He did not do this in secret.  Just because he is working on a new feature, does not mean he needs to tell EVERYBODY about it while he is working on it.

Thank you Slush.  You are providing me with more revenue with very little extra work on my side.  I hope you are making plenty of money and this is all worth your time.

Your trying too he implemented the merged mining like a thief in the night every other pool announced they were doing it in advance only to find out slush went ahead and scammed up the coins for his pool by doing it in secret without giving anyone the opportunity to join in his effort. If he had nothing to hide then he could have made same announcement as the others did and I don't care what anyone says the way he did it was a no good low down scummy little move on his part.

Your first sentence makes no sense.  You have both grammar problems and an incomplete thought with a lie thrown at the end.

Does didn't close his pool, so he did not block anyone from joining his effort.  Solving blocks for ones own pool is how things work, it is not 'scamming them up for his pool', otherwise all pools are scamming them up.  Should he be solving them and handing the coins out to people not in his pool?

Also spell intentions not intensions.
