mtgox monthly volume 7-10x larger than SR's,  contrary to previous speculations that mostly SR marketplace fuels Bitcoin economy

What is your point?

The FOREX market has a total daily turnover rate of $4 trillion.  The gross world product is about $80 trillion.  SR is selling manufactured goods, they take capital and labor and create goods that are more valuable than the parts separate.  MtGox is a zero-sum game for speculators and just a place to exchange currency for those that want to buy or sell something using the Bitcoin currency.

exactly.  When I was day trading on gox I was doing 5-10 trades a day of most of my balance so the trade volume has nothing to do with how much money is actually there or doing something of value.

1944  Other / Off-topic / Re: Woz Prints and spends his own $2 bills on: August 04, 2012, 12:06:26 AM
Masterful deception in the video; everything he says about how he makes the pads is true but misleading. Full story is at http://archive.woz.org/letters/general/78.html

Yes, he implies a lot but does not seem to say that he PRINTS them himself.  He buys the paper from a printer (the us government) and then pays a local printer (who does not print the money) to turn the sheets into perforated pads.  Clever.

So each $2 bill costs him way more, and if he does ever offer to sell a whole sheet to you for $5, TAKE IT.
1945  Other / Off-topic / Re: Woz Prints and spends his own $2 bills on: August 03, 2012, 11:54:55 PM
World class trolling.

Yes, that it is!  Expensive in a sense but utterly worth it.
1946  Other / Off-topic / Re: Nefario's takes on BC role in Bitcoinica = WTF on: August 03, 2012, 11:46:12 PM
I moved the positive ones too. There 8 or 9 threads about bitcoinica, a service, in bitcoin discussion. I've left them until now but it's getting out of hand. I left the ones that actually have information about what's going on.

And complaining about someone else's opinion is pretty off topic  Wink.
Maybe we need a Bitcoinica flame subcategory?

& a whole thread created from a reply on another thread?  why not just add it to that thread?

Yeah how about a rage or flame sub forum?   thats not a bad idea

Half the site would be in that sub forum.  Smiley
1947  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Power Blackouts - Does Bitcoin keep on ticking? on: August 03, 2012, 08:20:50 PM
Of course, an electronics destroying solar flare could pose a problem.

You can always keep a copy of the blockchain on a VHS tape. They can store up to ~4.5GB (usually around 3.5GB).

Ummmm ElectroMAGNETICPulse

Plus VHS really sucks as a storage medium.  Many of my old tapes (high quality Japanese media) really did not last, with tape stretching, magnetic loss and general degradation they are almost not watchable.  I can pull out a 20 year old CD and they work fine.
1948  Economy / Goods / Re: many GPUs for SALE 7970 5970 5850 6990 more!!! on: August 02, 2012, 01:16:10 AM
Offering 300 for a 7970, once you pay the pal and ebay fees you're real close to this number.  PM me if interested in this offer, I am not subbing to this thread.
7970's go for about $380 on ebay which is surprising as brand new ones are $429 at newegg.  $380-ebay/paypal fees is 34.20/11.32 so final received is about $335.

Some of that can be made up in e-bay shipping fees. But yeah, I can be reasonable.

I think $350 in BTC is reasonable, after all the 7970 has great resale value and can generate $75 a month in BTC.  If you cant get enough for it, leave it on  Smiley  I did that with my 6990 before I finally sold it.

It is so ironic that nameterrific ads are appearing on this thread.

1952  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: 4 dead PSUs, there HAS to be a commonly failing component on: July 31, 2012, 03:41:21 AM
In the past year I've had over 4 "out of warranty" PSUs die on me. A 750w Silverstone, 450w and 480w Antecs, a 400w Enermax and a few no name ones.

So now I've got a box of dead PSUs and I'm thinking, there's got to be a particular component that's responsible for a large portion of the failures.

And yeah, I've heard all the "Deadly Internal voltage" warnings etc. I always wait a day before opening one up, but I've pulled apart quite a few to recover the fans, so now I'm looking to actually repair them.

old but still valid.

My experience is bad caps or bad fans causing heat and switching transistor failures.  It is usually not worth attempting to fix a PS below 700W.

1953  Bitcoin / Meetups / Re: Bitcoin at Defcon on: July 31, 2012, 01:23:42 AM
There are a couple of threads about this, but can people summarize their bitcoin-related experiences at this past defcon in this thread? Without seeking anything out, I saw one vendor selling physical bitcoins along with a bunch of used equipment. They appeared to be some kind of Casascius coin resellers.
I was not there but that should have been the real Casacius.

1955  Economy / Marketplace / Re: Ready to unload my massive trove of 22 BTC! on: July 29, 2012, 03:23:44 AM
I'd accept PayPal if you were willing to wait 30 days to receive your bitcoins.

If you are going to make someone wait for paypal....  30 days is NOT enough.  I have been charged back ONLY AFTER 30 days.

1956  Other / Meta / Re: Fault of Bitcoin community on: July 28, 2012, 09:53:05 PM
You need to grow thicker skin, or consider hitting that ignore button to the left.  You don't have a right to not be offended.

Personally, I ignore insults against me, coz I have my own opinion regarding myself. But I'm affraid that fault of the community will lead to fail of Bitcoin concept.

Bitcoin is bigger then bitcointalk.org

1957  Economy / Service Discussion / Re: The last time I will be using spendBitcoins + paypal on: July 28, 2012, 09:28:09 PM
So I've been awaiting on my $100 for 3 weeks now(3 weeks and two days to be exact) in paypal only for it to get reversed back into the spendbitcoins paypal account
I ask to get a refund and they tell me they can refund my Bitcoins at the current USD rate which would come out to 13.83 BTC
My original order was 14.95 BTC

What a bunch of bullcrap......

Paypal used to be useful for trusted members to trade with, now it is not even useful for that.

I used your service today after seeing your banner ad on the forum.  I did not get any confirmation emails (you asked for an email address) but I DID get my payment very quickly and the website worked perfectly otherwise.

Thank you for running this service!

EVERY VICTIM OF BITCOINICA HEIST/FRAUD/NEGLIGENCE/WHATEVER,

I have a suggestion for you. Pick up a phone (101 in UK), go to local police station, whatever the procedure is in your locality and file a crime report, press charges, provide police with as many details as possible such as company names, and addresses, names and addresses of people involved into these companies, bank account numbers, BTC addresses, amounts of fiat and bitcoins that you and reportedly others have lost, timeline of events as known to you.

And let the chips fall where they will.

Officer Joe : "And what exactly are those Coinbits you had stolen from you?"

Victim: "Bitcoins. They're like a currency only for the internets, you know?"

Officer Joe: "I've never heard of this? Bob, have you ever heard of this?"

Officer Bob: "Is that like them there Facebook Money for the Amazons?"

Victim: "Yes.. No.. Kinda like that but ..."

Officer Bob: "Mah Darlene is always buying dem Facebook Moneys for dat dere Farm game, ya know? I says: Darlene, stop playing with them Farmbooks and get out there to feed them cows!"

Officer Joe: "So you got your computer game dollars stolen? Is that what we're talking about?"

Victim: "NO! It's not for Facebook. It's for buying.... other stuff..."

Officer Stan joining in: "I bet it's porn. Look at 'im blushing. I know it. I said it. It's porn."

Victim: "NO! It's not porn! There's this place called the Silk Road and... and...aaand... ooooh, look at the time... Toodles!"

Are you saying that act of stealing is only recognized applicable to real money, any stealing anything else isn't considered as such??? LOL

The USD part if brought to the attention of the authorities would be at least investigated.  I can not say the same for the BTC part.  So far, no BTC theft that we know of has been treated as a real theft by any government agency.

BTC theft for the time being may be treated similar to other "in game currency" thefts or ponzis.
