Has anyone considered that it may be something else entirely?

ASIC miners were supposed to come out at the end of last year. If the group that's built them is hoarding and using them, instead of selling them, that'd explain why so many of these coins are brand new & how they amassed so many so quickly. In which case, we wouldn't have any idea what they plan to do with them - maybe they're going to start a traditional-style bank, or fund some big new initiative to bring BTC into the real world.

Food for thought. Wink

Edit - did the math, over 9 months they would need to have accounted for about 28% of the total network power to accumulate all those coins purely through mining. A lot less if they're trading them for profit. Is it feasible?

Those coins are not from ASIC mining.

You sounds pretty sure.
Aliens could have used special technology to simply append them to the block chain too.

You can not always prove a negative, but as no ASIC's have been seen in the wild I doubt that they have been doing 28% of the hashing for 9 months.

I dont know. This puny list doesnt convince me. It has still to show whether coinbase actually does anything.

They did not pay me my referral fee nor did they respond to my ticket in their system.
1903  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Coinbase.com Puts Referral Program On Hold on: August 19, 2012, 05:00:58 AM
Is their service similar to those of Instawallet and Easywallet, but more complete and safe?
Or not?
I would give you my referral link, but...
They never paid me or responded to my question about being paid and I did this a few days ago.

1906  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Slashdot effect suck balls these days. on: August 16, 2012, 03:38:57 PM
2 articles featuring Bitcoin on front page of slashdot.org . As Matthew told me privately "slahsdotters will be furious about this".

However, one of those articles features a link to an old article about MintChip on bitcoinmagazine website. I must note that I am very disappointed by "slashdot effect" I can observe. Direct link to http://bitcoinmagazine.net from front page of slashdot.org and we could easily handle 1000 and even 10000 times stronger slashdot effect.

It seems, that bunch of Bitcoin haters are getting rather irrelevant these days.

From the last article about the bitcoinica lawsuit, the tone of the comments was actually much better.  There were still plenty of haters, but the bitcoin supporters were less then 1 in 10.  Now for every call of 'its a ponzi' there is some reason discussion about the brilliance of bitcoin and the lack of financial censorship.

I am sure that many of the haters have all bitcoin articles blocked as well.
1907  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Slashdot effect suck balls these days. on: August 16, 2012, 03:36:07 PM
I originally heard about bitcoin from slashdot, so it doesn't piss off everyone.  When you say slashdot effect are you talking about the number of hits to your website from slashdot?  thanks.

In old days, various websites regularly went down once mentioned on front page of slashdot.org due rather significant and sudden increase of visitors/hits. This is what was called "slashdot effect" i.e. many links on slashdot being dead because the websites referred could not handle the load. (probably because poorly configured apache on weak servers sucks when handling explosive load).

perhaps better explanation is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slashdot_effect (I did not read it)

To be fair, generally the Slashdot Effect only took down shared hosting plans.  If you're on any decent VPS server (or almost any dedicated server) you can easily handle the traffic from Slashdot articles.  Everytime I can recall people saying a story had been taken down by Slashdot (or digg, or reddit), it was generally responding with some kind of hostgator/bluehost/godaddy error page once it came back online.

Actually the slashdot effect mostly hurt internally hosted websites where the connection may have been a few T1's.  It is usually lack of  bandwidth that causes the problems not server load (unless you are running windows server).
1908  Economy / Speculation / Re: Bitcoin Project will be making a major announcement in September on: August 16, 2012, 03:32:43 PM
Could be many things!

1.0 version (most likely)
ASIC unfriendly changes (doubtful but possible)
some major player building in bitcoin support into a popular product
changes to the block reward (the halving)
1909  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: How to get trust to do a paypal trade? on: August 14, 2012, 12:16:52 PM
The problem with Paypal trades is Paypal isn't trustworthy.

Exactly.  In the thebitman case he claims to have not initiated the chargebacks, but instead paypal's own 'fraud detection' system did.  Same result, anyone who sold him bitcoins is out of money (though he has started to pay back).

1) three months of good forum business is NOT enough
2) moving money as a gift to avoid fees seems to initiate this 'fraud detection'
3) there are still tons of paypal scammers out there

The only rule that has worked so far for me is a tough one.....  only take paypal from people for bitcoins with people I have ALREADY met in person.
1910  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Paul Ryan Romney's running mate on: August 14, 2012, 11:46:57 AM
Paul Ryan was chosen for one reason=PAUL.

because his name has paul in it?

87 yr old man "I remember that paul name...he's a good guy for freedom"

Might work in Florida.

After one well done attack ad in Florida, seniors will NOT vote for either guy with the name Paul in it.  Paul Ryan's plan to wind down Medicare is going to cost votes.
1911  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Paul Ryan Romney's running mate on: August 14, 2012, 03:49:20 AM
I just don't see what Paul Ryan adds in terms of electoral votes.  He does not bring any new moderates to the table and he will most probably cause Romney to lose Florida due the the seniors being scared by his on the record budget proposals.  If they are not scared now, a well made attack ad will make them scared.

Romney does not have much conservative support for true conservatives, at most it gets some more conservatives but paul ryan isn't even true conservative like Ron Paul or Gary Johnson

Sorry.  Every 'true' conservative who could walk to the polls was going to vote for Romney before this VP choice.  He does not need any more support from 'true' conservatives unless they can vote more then once.
1912  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Chip designs that could impact Bitcoin: 3D stacking on: August 14, 2012, 03:18:34 AM
"Multiplier" implies an output greater than the sum of the inputs, which is impossible. Perhaps it is just a misnomer.
Nope, not a misnomer. Stellar radiation, upon striking aluminium, radiates 2-3x more than input. Nasa had an engine designed, for satellites and interplanetary observatories, that used a radiation multiplier propulsion engine (which produced 8x output), through stages I believe.

Ha.  Link please.  Maybe, just maybe, you were reading about solar sails and got most of the details wrong.

1914  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Alternatives to the new OzCoin 3% DGM Fee on: August 11, 2012, 10:46:17 PM

I personally felt I was bait and switched over at Oz, and while the merits of my reasoning are up for discussion, still that's how I felt.

I am very sorry that you feel the services OZCOIN is not worth 3%. We all wish you luck in the future on finding a pool you will be happy with.

However, insulting one of the most honest people that runs a pool (Graet) isnt the smartest thing to do. In fact he has paid out of his own pocket when its come to extra payouts because of database screw ups. Hell did you know that OZCOIN just paid out double on multiple blocks recently? Who eats this? Graet.

Ohh did you know that OZCOIN was hacked one time and lost all the coins in the wallet? Graet took it out of his own pocket to make sure people got paid. However, the community even donated to the pool to help offset the loss.

Its a lot of work to keep this pool going. Making sure things get fixed so it does'nt happen again. Graet has always looked out for everyone in the Bitcoin community even if they dont mine on his pool.

So before you start slinging false information and talk shit about how Graet is now moving over to a fee base to keep the pool open. Look at yourself and ask. "What have I done for bitcoin lately".
I appreciate your post, and for sharing your knowledge of the situation.

It's possible that just maybe my ways of thinking and views in general are different from the norm more than I had anticipated, but I feel it's appropriate to at least voice my opinion about the whole subject and get some nice intelligent responses in return (most of them were nice anyways heh).

Graet, I mean no disrespect to what you have done for the coin community, and I apologize if anything was taken that way.  I still strongly disagree with the 3% increase, though it appears that I may be the only one to date Smiley

I can understand that a fee increase hurts but it seems to be within reason.  If he had no fee then went (suddenly) to a 5% or 10% fee without warning it would feel like a bait and switch.   3% with notice is not unfair.

Your half way there, European regulations require all cars to be fitted with automatic breaking systems from 2014. I'm going to have great fun on the bike setting those off Smiley
Until you mistake a 2013 for a 2014.

1917  Other / Politics & Society / Re: 'Green Cars' on: August 11, 2012, 06:03:06 PM
What are your views towards electric cars? They are advertised as 'green' due to a much lower consumption of fossil fuels. However, in order to create the batteries for these cars, there has been a massive spike in rare earth mining in more recent years. The processes that yield these rare earth elements are not green at all. They utilize diesel machinery, a plethora of chemical agents for refining, and do it in such a way that it is non-sustainable. Mind you, the majority of REEs come from China as well, where they are even more lax in regards to both protecting the environment and protecting the workers.

I personally believe that the concept of these vehicles is an excellent one, but the current processes taken to create them do not really help the environment at all. Instead the extent of damage to the environment is just shifting hands, from the car owners to the people mining these resources.

Of course, rare earth elements go into many other devices, such as phones, tablets, surgical equipments, but a large amount of demand recently has been due to this notion that green cars are actually green.

Share your thoughts.

Electric cars are slowly becoming better and better.  Right now they either are too expensive or have too limited range.  The rare earth issue is much less of an issue then it is made out to be though.

Regular cars use lots of rare earths and nickel (in the metals and the cat) which is just as dirty as the rare earths in batteries.   Most of these metals in both the cat and in electric car batteries are collected and recycled now.

1918  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Do you have any Bitcoin? How many BTC do you have? on: August 11, 2012, 05:52:12 PM

1919  Other / CPU/GPU Bitcoin mining hardware / Re: Im convinced mining or some settings while mining destroys 5970's VRAM... =*( on: August 11, 2012, 03:51:56 PM
Like I said, the damage is not seen in mining btc. It shows up when trying to do gaming =/

note to self: may be limited to bitcointalk.org marketplace when re-selling 5970's when mining with them becomes unprofitable

Run them at lower speeds and voltages and they will be fine even for gaming so long as they run in a hot environment and you keep the fans working.
1920  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] BFL Singles at their TRADE IN value. on: August 11, 2012, 03:47:48 PM
A fair value would be their trade in value (600USD), plus whatever BTC can be generated between now and the ASIC ship time (anywhere from 3-5 months from now). You're talking upwards of 30-45 BTC, depending on future difficulty.

A more reasonable may to find the value of a single is between now and when you could get one if you ordered it today.   That is around 60 days of income not 3-5 months.  Still that is around $800 and most of them sell for between $700 and $900.
