2841  Other / MultiBit / Multibit HD 0.1.3 Password no longer valid on: October 10, 2015, 01:53:14 PM
I absolutely and definitively did *not* forget my password and it no longer unlock my wallet.

I left it on for a while and when i went to send a transaction, it of course ask the password again before sending the BTC, but at this point it tell me the password did not unlock the wallet.

I then closed the wallet and restarted the computer and now i cannot load up the wallet since the password is still invalid.

Is there something that can cause the right password to become invalid for no reason such as computer being set to wrong time, etc?
2842  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Tackling my Mining Rig heat generation on: October 10, 2015, 01:24:05 PM
Hi All,

I recently started a simple mining rig in my basement. I soon found out that my house became the best sauna in town. Apparently the basement became 30C (86F) and the hot air started traveling up heating the house. Since it's October I counted on cold weather outside bring cold air in through the basement window which didn't work because it was way too hot in the basement.

As a result, I put a box fan in front of the window to force cold air in. This greatly helped reduce the temperature in the basement and the miners. I have purchased more used Antminer S5s and 2 brand new Antminer S7s to add to my rig which will add more heat. I was hoping you guys can review my videos to see my set-up and maybe offer suggestions to try to improve airflow. Thank you in advance.
https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCM6Q5RTpnxXVI-YK37fBi8A

You should dump the heat strait outside, you don't have the ventilation of a data center. Then have a box fan pulling cool air into the basement and then a fan pulling the heat out.

You can either put the miners's exhaust in a window physically or by using those vinyl tubes.
2843  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Technical Support / Re: Blockchain Download on: October 10, 2015, 12:55:46 PM
Could anyone send me a copy of blockchain or tell me where I may be able to find one. I feel that this may save power from my internet and laptop as verification of blocks can be done offline. I already have online accounts with coinbase but am thinking of getting a bitcoin wallet that is more secure.

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=145386.0

from the thread: "IMPORTANT NOTE:  As of Bitcoin Core version 0.10.0 or later, this torrent is slower than a direct download using the bitcoin P2P protocol & client.  This torrent is now only maintained for research and development purposes as a secondary option.  Please use Bitcoin Core directly to download the blockchain."

i recommend use a light-wallet which dont sync full blockchain (if you don't need full blockchain). light wallets (electrum & co) still are very secure and NOT CENTRALISED like blockchain.info or coinbase..

But although blockchain is centralized, isn't it only unencrypted in your browser, so I'd they were hacked, you wouldn't lose your bitcoin, only if you yourself were hacked?
Blockchain itself is decentralised. BLOCKCHAIN.INFO is a centralised SERVICE. They store encrypted private key on their server and send the encrypted private key to you when you submit a request or submit the correct 2FA. If they were hacked, you could get hacked too, depending on their algorithm. Additionally, they have a lot of vulnerabilities in the past.

And their API is horrible. It keep causing bugs and issues with services that include it. Blockchain.info is a online centralized and not all that secure service for carrying your Bitcoin and to be honest, it is probably not a good one.

I think you should instead run a good SPV wallet for convenience, that way you have no need to hold the complete blockchain and if you wish to have a online foothold to put your bitcoins in the hand of a third party for a moment, i would recommend Coinbase.
2844  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Getting started on: October 10, 2015, 12:46:42 PM
3 per 15A breaker will trip.  If it's a 20A breaker, he'll be alright, but won't be able to run much of anything else on that same circuit.  Could probably run a decent LED TV and a lamp or two Tongue
You're right I just checked the S5 wattage it is higher than I had thought, if hes running 20amp he'll be fine, he could underclock the s5 to 500w each and run all 3 on a 15amp breaker and have ~200w to spare, this would give him led lights, clocks, and what not.

The 15A breaker are designed to run at less than 12A continuous you won't have 200w to spare you'll be 60-120watts over limit for "continuous load" = over 3 hours. It would then be very likely to trip over any little thing. If you're lucky it wont cause a fire, too. I have breakers who randomly tripped because they were at 13A~ A less sensitive breaker might of burnt out.

Proper power bar will tell you that the circuit is overloaded as well. If you have actual 120v you should limit yourself to 1400-1440. Many have less however, the range is 110v-120v.
I think we are over speculating on OP's living situations as a small unit with very few breakers, he may be able to push 2 units on 3 and 1 unit by itself.

I'm wondering apartment.  Lots of apartments are not really great on how much electricity you get as landlord likes cheap electricity bills if its' included in rent (most don't include in rent but some do).

Owning is nice it allows much more options.  Specifically  if you pan to have it with a plan plan you pick.   For me i have around 300 amps together for everything, 100 amps just for mining.  And no one can say no but the electricity company Smiley and they are happy to sell you as much as you can use.

I am indeed in a grey/weird area.
My lease however cover me and to be honest, i don't think they would care in the first place.

Having someone use double or triple the electricity in an arrangement of hundreds of apartments, while every single rent is 200-300$ over the area's average for a typical apartment is not really worth the man power required to police electricity usage when its damn dirt cheap and they don't even have individual meters for the the individual apartments.

Their interests is protected with the circuits only supporting 50-75A continuous at 120v.

So i think my situation is ideal if you want to run a couples of obsolete miners, partly for warming up during the cold times. But its not like you can ramp it up and start your dedicated hosting service datacenter-style in your living room.
2845  Economy / Speculation / Re: I have halted all purchases paying with Bitcoin on: October 10, 2015, 12:39:09 PM
I value gold more than bitcoins TBH as Gold isn't just a commodity for me but it is more like a protection for my family and is more valuable than bitcoins. I am not being a pessimist but I don't think the price will reach even $500 in the next 2-3 years. It may go upto $400 but chances are very low going by the current trend.

Well, are you betting gold will double in value in the next few years? I think gold is a good store of value, but unless a gold shortage happen, the value will most not likely raise by all that much.

If BTC goes up to only 400$, then that is a great investment to make right now. But if you wish for physical good that will merely retain their value, then gold/silver and toilet paper it is.
2846  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Bitfury a threat? on: October 10, 2015, 12:35:45 PM
1) It will take time for Bitfury to deploy that much new equipment. ESPECIALLY with the current yield issues on 14/16nm process from ALL manufacturers on that node.
2) Bitfury has quite a bit of competition already deploying more and more gear
3) Other folks have already announced tape-out or are working on 14/16nm chips

Note that KnC announced tapeout on their 16nm "Solar" chips almost a YEAR ago and announced deployment of those chips a while back, yet their hashrate has NOT exploded since then.

Will BitFury hit 1000 PH? Quite possible.
Will BitFury hit 1000 PH before halfing? Almost IMpossible.
Will BitFury hit 1000 PH by the end of NEXT year? Unlikely.
Will the total hashrate of the entire network hit 2000 PH before Bitfury gets 1000 PH of that deployed? Very very likely.

Keep in mind that there are still SEVERAL folks making chips/gear, BitMain is just the only one CURRENTLY selling to the public (Innosilicon and Lktec have already made announcements, there is that one thread about a rumoured Avalon next-gen machine, Spondoolies has already announced next-gen, plus the other folks that don't sell to the public....)

I think they are just trying to intimidate competitors. There is tons of rumors and promises of projects with no date set. I do not know when the data center will be completed, but its not like they will be able to load up 1000PH of hardware anytime soon.

It is possible however that they achieve it within a year or two, and with their 0.06 chips eventually rolling out, their data center could last quite a while and will then only need to be slowly upgraded, while they phase our their 28nm stuff.

With a project this big, they will probably rent Cloud hash or such. Probably take a page from Bitmain's tricks.
2847  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want to store bitcoin in USD without transferring to my bank? on: October 10, 2015, 12:22:43 PM

Hmm, you cannot just "chance the law" here, it is a long process and cannot be overruled just because the head of the government say so, or anyone for that matter. There are some clause that allow executive powers in time of Crisis, however.

But i very much doubt you having a brick of gold in a private vault is within the domain of national security.

I would believe it may not be safe in many places in the world, but i am not under the impression that it is a risk in Canada. And i doubt it would be in the US, europe, etc.

So naive my friend. He is right, the "law" is only law until it is enforced, otherwise its just a scribble on a piece of paper.

When the global meltdown hits, I doubt a piece of paper in the parliament archive will overrule the current elite's agenda.

Face it, when shit hits the fan, everybody will fight for survival.

Like dont tell me when the ATM's wont give out money people wont break into stores and riot, because that is what will happen, and your gold isnt any more safe than the poor shop owner's groceries, from the angry mob, or other forces.

It *is* going to be safe in a vault from the angry rioters and only countries not able to self sustain will break apart if a "global meltdown" happen. And if a "actual global meltdown" happen, then BTC will be worthless, so will USD, so storing such currency in this post-apocalyptic scenario is moot.

In such case, goods will be the currency as we go back to a bartering system. So Gold, Water, toilet paper would be a better investment in this scenario of yours. Of course you would need a bunker too. ;P

But for OP, the solution is clear, he need to trust a 3rd party to hold his USD since he wishes to hide it from his bank. So he does not have many options. Buying gold is a good one.
2848  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: good places to hide paper wallet ? on: October 10, 2015, 12:16:25 PM
Best place is your locker or safe beileve it or not these are best places or try to hide in bank.
Good idea! Unfortunately, OP have to pay some interest/rent for the bank locker Shocked
IMO, there's nothing much an efficient locker than your/human brain, just remember your btc address and corresponding private key!

Problem with this is one point of failure.  Say you could perfectly remember your private key's (yes multiple is what I suggest instead of one big one).

Lets say you are hit by a bus.   Now the only person who knew the keys is gone.   I like bank deposit box as family will get it if that bus situation happens.  (And it is very unlikely but still most I think would want family to have access to it instead of it becoming abandon)

You can put it in your will, which become effectively the same as storing an encrypted usb + paper with your priv key in a safety box, but it seem people here like to say "you can't trust the government so you can't use safety deposit boxes!".

Hence my idea of implanting the data in a silicon capsule between your toe or something.

In a "normal" world from our perspective, lets go with an encrypted USB drive/paper backup in a couples of safety box for redundancy. That way your peers can access it if you get hit by a bus.
2849  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: BM1384 Pod Miner plus trade-in/recycling - an interest and feasibility poll on: October 10, 2015, 01:01:34 AM
I might do a limited pre-order to help offset initial costs of PCBs and other required parts (all the controls, jacks, signal logic and LDOs), but as always I'd prefer not to take in money until I have a working prototype. I'll probably do some refining on my proof build tomorrow and hopefully test out some stuff that doesn't work quite so well right now which I think I have solved already but it's not implemented on the old board. Did some recalculating on buck design today as well so I'll have a few more parts to replace on that and get it closer to what should be final design. I don't want to get too far into the specifics of a prototype PCB layout until I have all the problems "thoroughly licked".

As is always the case, controls and code is Novak's domain. I assume he'll be testing communication and control stuff while I'm testing power and whatnot. To be fair, I don't actually need his code to work when I do the board design so long as the hardware portion is intact - parts selection, pinout decided upon, etc. He can code firmware and bench-test stuff while we wait for the PCBs to arrive. But once I have a working prototype with my hardware and his software, I'll take stock of what parts I have and how many we're to build in the first batch and see what people want to do. Right now I think ordering prototype PCBs in a week is somewhere on the optimistic side of realistic but not quite impossible. Since I won't be building more Compacs next week I should have a good bit of time for R&D.

Speaking of Compacs, I think I'll reopen an order queue for the next batch.

Hah, dibs on pre-order if i can afford it in the short window. I think waiting for a prototype sound reasonable if that work for you. Worse case scenario, you do a pre-prorder for trading-in parts first? Dead S5 boards, components you actually need, etc?

If i'm tight on money when the window open, i can always ship that board to the US. That should be relatively cheap to do.
2850  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: Sidehack stick solo pool club on: October 09, 2015, 11:35:46 PM
right now the only issue I see is one person has not purchased a stick  so when beta testing ends he would not get a share.

We  well I allowed him to mine  and anyone else  to mine during beta with any gear  and get a share. as long as there were active.

I believe  he is mining with an s-3 and that is all he has.

this is the miner.

http://solo.ckpool.org/workers/1JiWuyX94wrCr7JhkAn7x5qNMCEef1KhqX.aarons6

So since we are coming up to the end of beta I wanted to check if aarons6  has added a stick and I missed it.

Next is  how to spilt a block after beta.

I am thinking ½ based on equal spilt ½ based on shares earned in time frame.  Based on this idea  we could keep someone like aarons6 in the pool and he only gets coins from shares ½ not the stick ½ .

Size limits members in the club       maybe 30 or less.

Length of a run 1 month       the 11th of each month.

I think the above pushes sidehack product which I/we want to do.

We could also do  something for pods when and if they come out.

Opinions needed for the above.
Also for this run from oct 11 to nov 11   I will point this miner  24/7/30

I guess now would be a good time to pickup the ideas i threw out a while back.

I had suggested max 2 shares per person. 1 for stick, 1 for donation no matter what the donation is, that way everyone still get equal share but this will incite people to donate what they can.

I am not sure if you meant half the reward go equally between stick owners and the other half is hashrate dependent. If that is the case;

I would say if there is not a too big difference in minimum and maximum given your option would be good and more rewarding for people who throw in more hash, while still worthwhile for people that can only point a bit of hash at this. Since just actively pointing a stick means getting 1/60th of 25BTC+ if we have 30 participants.

Your way may motivate more hashrate to be thrown at this, so both way would get my +1.

2851  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: ASIC Antminer S1 not really mining on: October 09, 2015, 10:56:48 PM

If you SSH into the miner and type screen -r you should see the shares being reported as such. Rejected, share above diff, over and over.

Tried screen -r and my S1 responded "-ash: screen: not found" . . . do I need to be in a specific directory for this to work?

I see, my bad, screen is not installed on S1 by default and i am not sure about the proper instructions to install it.

I get this;

Code:
root@1S1:~# opkg update
Downloading http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/packages/Packages.gz.
wget: server returned error: HTTP/1.1 404 Not Found
Collected errors:
 * opkg_download: Failed to download http://downloads.openwrt.org/snapshots/trunk/ar71xx/packages/Packages.gz, wget returned 1.
root@1S1:~# opkg install screen
Unknown package 'screen'.
Collected errors:
 * opkg_install_cmd: Cannot install package screen.
Maybe someone more knowledgeable could help?

Meanwhile I would recommend adding the S1 to M's Miner Monitor;
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=596178.0

See what it does. It does it through SSH using the cgminer api which i am not familiar with.
2852  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: I want to store bitcoin in USD without transferring to my bank? on: October 09, 2015, 09:39:34 PM

Its not really easy to steal gold from a vault and those are insured. Bitcoin is a unknown store of value. Its not because its protected from fiat inflation that its a good store of value. Its volatile as hell and probably what people would give as an example to being a poor store of value. If the price change a lot, its not a "good store of value".

It may however be a "good long term hold investment" if you bet on Bitcoin succeeding its revolution.

If it fail you lost everything, Hence a bad store of value.

Meanwhile gold, even if ever government blow up/vanish, the world end will retain value.

I think toilet paper is a better store of value than Bitcoin Wink

Gold can be stolen by "confiscation", if too many people start to use it. All vaults are at the mercy of the government, if they choose to enact a law to confiscate gold, and give you a "redeemable" toilet paper , then you are also mistaken.

Bitcoin on the other hand cant be confiscated, even if its price is volatile.

Confiscated, do you live in Brasil or something? Its completely illegal for the government to do this here. If you live in a country where you cannot trust the government, then i would understand your prerogative and would leave it as an option for people that live in countries with stable governments.

I dont think there is a country where you can trust them Cheesy

I mean they make the laws and can change it anytime, they just issue an emergency executive order to "save the economy" and boom your gold is gone, they will confiscate it all...

2853  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Is it worth mining? on: October 09, 2015, 08:40:10 PM
My reason for disrecommending the S7 is exactly that. Even in ideal mining condition, such as 0.05$/kWh ~ and 2-4% diff increase from now on, no more 5% and such, no pool fee and no BTC price plummeting, the S7 will not ROI by halving, at which point any profit after that is dubious at best.

We do not know what will happen at halving.  Prices could go up or yes many miners will have to stop.   We cannot say with any certainty this far away.

One thing to keep in mind is the selling of the machines.  Even if someone has higher electricity they can mine with it for quiet a while.   S7 will still hold value at around having, they might have to sell to ROI.  But with owning a newer miner the good thing is value is better.  Look at SP20, S4 S5, Avalon 4.1 to show the trend of miner still having good value even though they are not the most current.

I agree, which is why i don't think the S7 will maintain its price. This may sound counter intuitive but here is why;

When the S5 first came out, the price per GH was 0.3$~ After all this time, the S5's are still reasonably worth something. But is that because units don't devalue that much or because the S5 was properly priced from the start? S5's are about 0.2$~/GH now.

Now look at the S7, already went down... 100$? And the Price per GH is over 0.4$ door to door. About double a S5, and half electricity consumption does not mean double the value.

I would value the S7 at 0.3$/GHs, no more. Each GH return much less last year, when S5's were introduced, yet the price per GH on the S7 is much higher.

Why? Because Bitmain has monopoly. Tongue
2854  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB][CA/QC] A single, working, Antminer S5 blade/PCB and 18pin long cables on: October 09, 2015, 07:28:23 PM
How much you're willing to pay for them  with shipping?

Cables are 38 cm long, 18 pin. Shipping from EU (Estonia)

Cables are sold from J4bberwock for 1$ when in stock, i could give you 1.5$ each. And the bracket i don't know, a few dollars maybe? But i'm surprised you're offering, since i'm assuming shipping from overseas would make this deal impossible?

J4bberwock cables are shipped from France. For EU customers they were so far 1 euro each + shipping.
If you really get 2 cables from  J4bberwock  for 3$ with shipping, I will send you mains  free .

But do not  worry about the shipping costs.

Offer Your price with shipping.

Okay well 1 euro is 1.14 USD and i offered 1.5USD per, i did not mean for that to be the price including shipping. However, do you want me to offer with shipping or not? You say do not worry about the shipping costs and then you tell me to make an offer with shipping, so i'm a bit confused.

From my point of view, how much it would cost to ship them is the deciding factor. But i never checked overseas shipping rates. Unless there's a way to ship it like the Chinese, which end up being near free, i don't imagine sending 2 cables overseas is going to be very economical?
2855  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: 21 Bitcoin Computer or Cloud Mining Website ? on: October 09, 2015, 06:55:00 PM
As a asset, the 21 Bitcoin Computer will depreciate in value, moments after you bought it... as a matter of fact, it's depreciating in value, while it's still packaged and on the shelf.

So even if you bought it as a asset to sell later, you will not get a lot for it and the amount of Satoshi's you make from it, will not lead to a ROI.

Cloud mining is proven Ponzi's... Good when you get in early and out fast... If you pull out to late, you will stand a chance to lose everything. So I would rather hoard the 2 BTC.

It's not because there's so many scam out there that all services are scam or Ponzi. Hashnest has to be legit and it's running on actual physical hardware and even though it IS setup to exploit people's money in a way that is safe(risk free) for Bitmain, it is by no mean a Ponzi.

Hashnest would be the only cloud mining service that I would invest on. I've seen that they will be adding the ability to purchase Antminer S7 hashrate soon. I'm keeping my eye on this one as they say that it is very energy efficient with low maintenance fees.  Cheesy
But, I heard, at Hashnest, no one has ever made an ROI!!!

Thats definitively false. Another good way to make profit on Hashnest is trading hash. The dividend you get is just a bonus, meanwhile its apparently more previsible than trading coins since the parameters are much more narrow.
But, trading hashpower does not always mean you are profiting from it. You may lose as well. Moreover, trading is a separate activity than mining.

Well this is the bitcoin discussion board, not the mining board. So i would say that mentioning how the big profit on hashnest is done by day trading the hash on hashnest is appropriate.

Especially since when you are putting money in such services, you're not really mining either, you're just giving money to a company, that will invest it to their own benefit, meanwhile you will get a pretty low return as you will pay very high upkeep costs.

So thank you all for the help.

Im a little bit frustrated because 1 of the boards is dead after 4 Days. (i waited 2 Month for it, because i ordered it in Canada). I try to contact the support that they send me a new. Sad

I wish you great time. Wink

Thanks again
Greetings
Dean
Hold on before throwing this board away;

I'm not fully convinced your board is dead. Some chips on it are still running. Did you try to power everything off, unplug the PSU, wait 10 seconds, replug everything, then power everything back on? Its called a power cycling and waiting for the charge to dissipate before repowering it on is important.

Every single time i've had a bunch of x's i always fixed it with this. A soft reboot does not work when there chips go derp like this.

And if this does not work, i would still suspect it would be more likely for the PSU to be bad than the board. Did you try with another, good PSU?

2858  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Feature that should be added on: October 09, 2015, 06:41:27 PM
Under file it should have "Write offline transaction" and "Put offline transaction online" or something along those words.  Already has sign/verify message, sweet feature.

What are you talking about? The Bitcoin core wallet? Which wallet? If you want a wallet that does this, the Feature is already available for almost all wallet. (Sign message)
And if you want offline signing, the feature is already available as well; https://bitcoinarmory.com/
I think by "write offline transaction" he means there should be a feature in which we can make or submit offline transactions from bitcoin core and by "Put offline transaction online" he means that once the system gets online then submit or sync the transactions with the netwok.

This is what I mean..

One should have an offline computer, I'd like to sign a transaction on it, burn it to a CD and post it onto the blockchain from my online computer.

Seeing as security is pretty much the #1 issue.. this seems rather important to me.

Like i said, that feature is already available on armory. Bitcoin core only has basic necessities and always will, its meant as the core features wallet, not as a convenient wallet thats best for the end user.

Most users will want a SPV wallet first and then you can pick the features you want from the list of wallets on bitcoin.org.

You can easily buy 200gh/s for 20$ for an antminer S1 and just run it in the winter using it as a heater and you will do much better than a 3gh/s stick, but neither of these will make you much of anything.
Where can I find an ANtminer S1 for this price?
Check the marketplace on this forum and make a [WTB] Post, these have been sold a lot so you might have to wait a minute to get one.

You should look for a lot. I got a lot of 7 for 100$... few months back? I have pen volt modded mine and today i put a completely silent miner in one and put it next to my bed, since its starting to get a tiny bit cold.

You'll have problem finding someone actively selling them in the marketplace but you might be able to have someone get S1 out of storage for you if you manage a buying thread.

How many satoshis are you getting each day?

you should check your electricity cost first, because antminer s1 isn't efficient at all, you may end up losing money eac day instead of earning few pennies

Well like we said in the comment you quoted, we're doing this to replace electric heating. In my case, S1's return and its cost is very close to being the same, so in the case where i need the heat anyways because its now cold outside, it's nearly pure profit.

I would not run 30 of them in a room but if you spread them here and there in the house, which is easy because they are on Wifi, you can save much more money on heating than you have put in.

Not right now, thats the only place where you can get home miners at the moment from a manufacturer. There's tons of resellers selling overpriced stuff but i can't recommend that. Your best bet is the marketplace here, buy used from another user.

So if you only want to buy "new" there's Bitmain at the moment with the S7 which is not super stellar imo.

OK Thanks for the advice, I would like to check the marketplace if I could get some great stuff there.

But even if S7 is not that great at the moment, as a miner there is a possibility to profit
if you know the right place, time, and equipment you might need to keep on track with your bitcoin.

thanks in advance  Grin

Thanks in advance for what? Tongue do you need more information? Tongue Ask away, and As QuintLeo just said;

The S7 itself doesn't seem to be a bad miner - it is the "no bloody way to achieve RoI on it under current conditions for pretty much anyone" PRICING that is the bad part.
