1981  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: can i make a profit with 50 ghs asic and no electricity bill? on: December 08, 2015, 09:44:20 PM
Why not buy a bigger miner if electricity is free. If electricity was free here then I bought for sure a few miners.

Yes, do like me, buy a bunch of S1's which are really cheap and still produce an amount of GHs that can be worthwhile in bulk. Also running them at 140gh pen modded, they are completely silent. I can put a fully silent fan on them.
1982  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: ASICMiner Prisma and Minera setup help on: December 08, 2015, 09:20:14 PM
How do you compile cgminer?  Sorry, I'm a noob and wasn't able to find that information or which directory it's supposed to be run from in RPi.  What would the command be?  From what I've read, you have to enable the block-erupter when you use Minera because the default is set to disabled.

When I bought my Prisma, it came with the RPi and Minera installed so I didn't have to do anything to get it working.  But, from what I've read from michelem's github, all you're supposed to do is put the image file onto your SD card and then you should be able to access it via http://<IP address that's assigned to it>/minera
https://github.com/michelem09/minera

Within the Minera app, when you go to Settings, Local Miner, it lets you "Select your preferred miner software" with the options of CPUminer (GC3355 fork), BFGminer 5.x (Official), CGminer 4.x (Official), and CGminer (Dmaxl Zeus fork).  I've selected CGminer 4.x (Official) but it doesn't recognize my Prisma.

If you broke the cgminers, you should be able to rebuild it by:
cd /var/www/minera
./build_miner.sh <miner-name>

That's included in the link above too, under the section "Building miner software".

I agree, it is very annoying not being able to set it up easily.  I've read a lot of people having difficulties too.  Sad

Thats a very nice script, that thing has the full compile script to build the miner, so i don't need to give you the full instructions.

go to /var/www/minera
edit build_miner.sh
go to the cg official line config. instead of having to type ./configure --enable-blockerupter you change that line so --enable-blockerupter will be called, so just add "-enable-blockerupter".
save

now do ./build_miner.sh cgminer

As far as including the --enable-blockerupter option, we're done. Its slow on RasPI so i'll report later. Good luck.

Edit:

So now i can do --bet-clk 20, but still no device found. I'm wondering if the usb art adapter simply is broken. A Usb plugged IS detected by cgminer, but no mining device is ever found.

Not sure whats up.

When i use my zeus usb uart, at least i get "failed to initiatlize icarus, wrong device?" spam.
1983  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: GekkoScience Compac BM1384 Stickminer Official Support Thread on: December 08, 2015, 08:41:40 PM
Hi Everyone,

I got my EU version of the compac through rom bitshopper.de to play with and I have an interesting issue with my stick that I'd appreciate some input on.

I can get the stick hashing ok from BFGMiner since it doesn't get detected by the novak version of cgminer but I have read that this is a known thing so that doesn't really bother me.

Then things get interesting as it will sit happily at around 10-11 GHs and then after what feels like a few minutes the hash rate starts dropping down slowly to zero so I started to investigate.

I got my mains plug power meter and stuck that between the wall socket and the power supply for my admittedly crappy (!) USB hub and when its hashing its drawing about 7.1W from the wall but then it drops out to hardly anything when the has rate starts dropping and putting a DMM on the stick reveals that I have no vCore voltage when this happens but the rest of the voltage rails check out ok!?

Has the stick upset my crappy hub and activated some sort of protection? Taking the USB and power off the hub and plugging it back in restores the vCore on the stick and it will hash again which is making me think its the hub doing something.

The hub is powered by a 5V 2A wall wart style power supply.

I find it interesting that the power is still going to the stick since the green LED stays on and I thought if a USB port "trips" due to power consumption it cuts the power? or perhaps it limits the power?

Do you think a USB Y-Cable would sort the above if its a, per port on the hub, power related issue? Maybe I need a new hub?

You could try downclocking for the time being see if it stay stable. Also a Y Splitter is nice and cheap. (paid 1$ for mine)

Why not go back to cgminer and use Zadig to fix the driver issue as instructed in OP?
1984  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: wanted: New hardware on: December 08, 2015, 01:20:32 PM
I have to wonder how much of the zombie issue is U3 specific, and how much of it is USB miners in general, as I saw far-too-frequent zombies out of the Gridseed blades (not daily, but usually more than once a week per blade).

I have had 0 Zombie issue with any device whatsoever. I have 3 different miners that connect through USB right now and i do not get Zombie at all. I'm guessing the U3 were mass fabricated with a defect and now we need to use a workaround solution for it.
1985  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: ASICMiner Prisma and Minera setup help on: December 08, 2015, 12:23:03 PM
Hi everybody.  I'm new to Bitcoin mining and recently purchased an Antminer S3 and an ASICMiner Prisma.  I got the S3 up and running with no problems, however the Prisma is giving me a lot of difficulties.  It's a version 1.0, with a USB adapter to a Raspberry Pi with the latest Minera update installed.  I followed Dogie's Comprehensive setup and have searched everywhere for a possible solution but to no avail.  Within Minera, it says "No local devices found".  I tried connecting only one of the boards and also 2 separate USB adapters, but it still won't work.  I read online that you're supposed to --enable-blockerupter but I'm not sure where I'm supposed to run that.  Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I'm actually trying to make this work right this second.

And --enable-blockerupter is a flag for when you compile cgminer, since its already compiled with BE enabled, that already has been done. Maybe go to miner section and change which miner it run.

At the moment i can't even get to connect to minera, ugh.

Edit: So to recap;

-I got the minera image from crazybitcoinguy/minera
-Reflashed RPI

But then there's no preset for ASIC T or P, nothing relevant to BE stuff in the readme (beside a flag to compile) and --bet-clock that is in the config file is not even a valid command.

So i'm now trying to find where cgminer is hiding on minera and try to reconfigure it with the -be flag.

Edit2: /var/www/minera/minera-bin/custom

Edit3: Got compilation error, broke all cgminers on Minera. This is getting pretty annoying.
1986  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Best Gh to Watt Miner? on: December 08, 2015, 05:06:38 AM
I'm a young miner that has been in the bitcoin community since 2011 and was deep into bitcoin back when the original $1000+ jumps were happening and made some money with it.. the problem is i've been away for a while and i'm having trouble finding the best miner (50Gh-100) That's power efficient and not a crazy amount so maybe with altcoins there could be a jump in value. anyone have any suggestions at todays current best power efficient miners? Thanks!

I'll ignore your GH limit and your mention of Altcoins;

Antminer S5, best middle ground. 1155-1300GHs, 590-640watts, at minimum 300$ per.

Antminer S7, best Gh to Watt miner, 4000-5000GHs, 1200~~watts, at minimum 1500$ per.

To really answer you, we need your $/kWh and your budget.
1987  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Confused. How to store bitcoins offline on: December 08, 2015, 05:02:52 AM
No, you are fine. The private keys are stored in the wallet.dat. They are protected by your passphrase. As long as you don't lose that file and no one is able to get it from you, then your Bitcoin is safe.
(@OP: You are confusing holding/keeping the BTC with SECURING the BTC, what you are doing is not security, it is only adding liability.)

He is not. From what he said, he did a hot wallet, which means uninstalling the client and putting it on a USB key still leave the priv key possibly exposed, since he did not have a secure, offline environment when he generated the priv key.

This is not cold storage.

TLDR: Uninstalling the client and putting the dat on a USB key add 0 security whatsoever.
The key phrase to my response was no one is able to get it from you, which in this case, he is making it easy (relatively) for someone to steal the Bitcoin from him. However as long as he has the wallet.dat file, then he has the private keys and he will be able to spend any Bitcoin associated with the addresses associated with those private keys. Whether the Bitcoin remains there is up to his security, but he will continue to possess the private keys necessary to spend what is left as long as he has the wallet.dat and it remains uncorrupted.

I said he is not (fine). Because what he did just weakened his security/increased the chance of losing his BTC. Hopefully he at least *did* encrypt the wallet.
1988  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] Antminer S3's and C1 on: December 08, 2015, 03:04:05 AM
VirosaGITS where in Canada are you if its near quebec id consider meeting you by the boarder I am just outside NY City otherwise I could see what shipping would be if your still interested in the 2 X S3's

Had I known you had more S3's to sell the other week I would have grabbed them in a second! If you don't end up selling them, then please keep me in mind. Bump for a great honest seller, mindtrip is the real deal.

We discussed this in the past, a midpoint won't work. Thanks though, but even if we figured this out now, months later, at this point i'm thinking of just saving up for a current gen miner.

But i don't think you'll have a problem selling them domestically! Cheers.

private keys???     oh no!!!

I didn't get the private keys,  Is it too late?  I already uninstalled the bitcore client

Where are these bitcore private keys?  Why do i need these,  I thought all i needed was  the wallet.dat & Passphrase

I wasn't aware about these private keys

I saved my passphrase in a textfile inside the usb key along with the wallet.dat

is it too late?? did i do it wrong?? did i lose my money??
No, you are fine. The private keys are stored in the wallet.dat. They are protected by your passphrase. As long as you don't lose that file and no one is able to get it from you, then your Bitcoin is safe.

ok wow!

that's all way to complicated for me at the moment
Users above are more than paranoid Wink, you explained everything right in your first post of this topic.
You can delete bitcoin core now, you have backup with your private key (which allows you to spend your bitcoins) in money.dat on USB stick.
Password is additional security.

Good luck in bitcoin world!

Yes but remind him to have 2 USB sticks because if one can get damaged the guy don't know his private keys, he should print those too! security is number 1.

XD

What i was trying to say is. Doing that does not give any more security than just leaving the wallet there. There is no point after generating a hot wallet, to uninstall the wallet and put the wallet on a USB key.

It add 0 security.

Having a backup on a USB key is only for redundancy in case your HDD break.

I understand now, btw generating a vanity address on your server was like 0.8 and I can't afford it so please cancel that order, I will think of a shorter name and try again.

Hopefully its OP that will understand as well. Otherwise he'll go through loops that does not give any protection. The best thing he can do is secure his wallet environment as much as possible.

And the beginner way to do it very securely is using a VM.
1991  Bitcoin / Group buys / Re: [SIDEHACK STICK] Official sales thread for everywhere not already covered on: December 08, 2015, 01:24:50 AM

...

...Avalon may be the best bet.

not for the next 4 months, not in their roadmap..

The best bet in my opinion was a board that use BM1384 that allow super low voltage, so that the efficiency remain competitive with the current gen. But in term of time involvement and production cost vs throughput, this may make the ordeal pointless.

Too bad considering i've had boards standing-by for trade in.

How it would it be exposed?  I wouldn't have a wallet

I plan to put the usb key locked inside a box under by bed.  And i will uninstall and delete the bitcoin core client on my desktop.

Then in a few years when i need the bitcoins, i will install bitcoin core client and upload the money.dat file, and i should be back in business?
If your computer is online when the wallet was created, then some virus on your computer logs your wallet password and sends the wallet file to someone else who can now spend your money.

Say the computer was online (you had to be to download Bitcoin Core) so it got a virus. You make it offline but the virus is still there. When you make the wallet, it records your password and copies the file. Then when you go back online it sends it to an attacker and he just stole your Bitcoin.

It doesn't matter whether Bitcoin Core is presently installed or not, as long as the attacker has the wallet file and your password, the money is gone. To be fully secure, you need to create the wallet and any cold storage wallet for that matter on an offline computer that has never been online in the past. This includes virtual machines since a virtual machine running on a compromised host is just as bad as using Bitcoin on a compromised computer.

Yes you have to do it with a computer that never or never again will touch the internet. So a disposable VM or a linux booted is indeed ideal.

If at any point during or after the wallet creation the computer is connected to the internet, the priv key is never guaranteed to be cold storage.
1994  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Confused. How to store bitcoins offline on: December 08, 2015, 12:24:45 AM
What if i don't have an extra computer?

Use the guide i told you. The safest way to generate it offline with a online computer would be to use a virtual machine that has no networking. Make the paper wallet then wipe the VM.
1995  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Confused. How to store bitcoins offline on: December 07, 2015, 11:10:01 PM
I am confused about how to store bitcoins offline,

1. I downloaded the bitcoin core client

2. I went to settings>Encrypt Wallet and made a password.

3. i transferred my bitcoins into the wallet.

4. I went to File>Backup Wallet

5. Now i have a file called money.dat on my desktop

What do i do now?  Do i delete my bitcoin core client?  install a fresh one with 0 bitcoins

and then put the money.dat into a usb key?   and later when i want to get my money just load the money.dat into the wallet

And to get into the money.dat file is to remember my encrypt password that i made up?

I'm a little confused

You install the wallet into an offline computer, then generate an address and done.

If you plan to buy through eBay...why come here? Why not just go to eBay?

I figure OP wants it cheaper and paid with BTC

Then its not going to be through Ebay.

I don't think its worth the hassle to sell the miners i have.
1997  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: ANTMINER S7 is available at bitmaintech.com with 4.86TH/s, 0.25J/GH on: December 07, 2015, 10:30:42 PM
Decided to "make a thing" to power my S7s Grin. Hope some of you will appreciate this!

2X 2000w server PSUs sharing the load of the 3 S7s. Will shortly be replacing the PSUs with the 2500w versions since I'm actually pulling 4400w DC from them right now, which is 200w over their rating on each.

I've adjusted the voltage output to 12.6v on the PSUs.

Sweet any plans to sell your creation? hows the over volting working for you do you notice any substantial hashing gains?

if he is not, I've this breakout board that does exactly the same thing:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=1178099.0

-load sharing
-voltage adjust (11.3v to 13.0v / 11.7v to 13.7v)
-optional sideplates for easier mounting of the fans.

Finksy will sell them soon for the North America market, in the mean time, I'm taking care of the orders.

Heh, I was actually about to post a link to your thread. That's definitely the way to go! I already had all of this equipment on hand, so I decided to make the best of it.

When you have the tools to do it, only need a few made and have some spare time, it's often cheaper and more rewarding to do it yourself than to buy something that's manufactured by someone else.

Your setup is quite nice, and does the job.
My only concern is the fact that it takes a lot of space (assuming you'll protect the bare copper plates for your own safety)

I was thinking that, after i was done with being amazed by the setup. (Mostly the fact that its more TH/s than all my many crap miners that takes tons of room) I was thinking i would use this to build some kind of enclosure;

1998  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: wanted: New hardware on: December 07, 2015, 10:10:16 PM
I want to purchase some new asic miners. are there any asic miners that use the 22nm fab process or lower?

I have a lot of distaste for antminer because of the u3's that I have. What are some other brands out there?

The u3's are bad, there is a way to fix the Zombie thing, since i assume thats your issue, with the r1 router or a simple restart script, iirc.

But don't take that as a ground for how the S's are. The S3(And S1) and S5 are pretty solid, though the S5 need a bit of post purchase work. The S2 and S4 work fine out of the box, though they are noisy.

The S7, well it worries me with the heatsink that can falloff and its a very big piece of hardware to get in one bite, but its still a good miner if you don't melt the thermal plaster.
1999  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Can you solo mine with block eruptor or not? on: December 07, 2015, 10:01:57 PM
There ìs a chance but like everyone said the chance of hitting a block to get that reward is so minute.  If you have spent a good bit of cash on those erupters and can't get a refund you could use them to mine some altcoins maybe to make some of your dough back.

I'm wondering also what pool you are using and what your level of hash power is because that looks like a crazy low amount for a month.

Its not going to earn him any more, we're talking about a miner here doing MH/s. Yes MH's. Not GH, or TH, or PH that you need. Him earning 1$ of altcoin before he dies of old age is not going to recoup getting scammed by 2500Euros.

The only thing he can do is get refunded. Seeing how he was the buyer and he got clear cut scammed, it should be easy to do.

Its always possible to run the stick as a lottery, which is fine in itself imo. Its similar chance to winning IRL lottery, so its not impossible, its just not worth 2500Euroes.
2000  Bitcoin / Mining support / Re: Basic Mining Question on: December 07, 2015, 04:25:11 AM
I've been mining for awhile now on Slush and recently transitioned my miners to a smaller pool. It's been about 3 days now and I've been thinking and learning a lot more by speculation on this forum and the operation of this small pool I am on.

Question:

When pools are mining, are they all mining the same block or different separate blocks that the pool is locked in to until the block is solved then another block is locked into the pool?

There is no progress toward a block or something such a individualism. Its more like drawing lots until you find a winning one (a share). When you find a winning one, that is a share with a diff over the global network, you found a block. The node broadcast it to the network and then tell you if its valid.
