1941  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: Avalon 6 Vs Antminer S7, which one you will choose? on: December 12, 2015, 07:56:57 AM
I chose the Avalon over the Antminer due to the noise level.   I'm getting about 3.3TH with EVGA G2 1300watt PSU.  I hear you can get 3.7-4TH using higher voltage Server PSU.   The Avalon 6 in my garage at 3200RPM is silent thru the door and not ridiculously loud like the Antminer S7.   Noise is a major concern for home miners.   The PI Controller is also very nice as it allow me to just do the configuration just once and only need 1 IP address / network cable for the entire daisy chained group of Avalons.  Very happy with my purchase and I'm actually going to order another 1 which will help keep my living room warm for the winter.  It only have 1 FAN vs 2 on the AntMiner S7 hence why it's so much quieter and I can use ATX PSU which is silent vs the Bitmain 1600W PSU which is quite loud.  Another awesome thing is that it only require 4 PCI-E connection vs 10.

But the Avalon 6 is so expensive, i'd think you'd be better off getting a S7, dropping the fan speed to 20% and underclocking, for less noise, more hash, better efficiency, better price?

This is crazy...

Thanks!

This is INSANE.  Undecided

Not sure what to think. This isint just S7/A6 being sold. Maybe the SP50 made their way to an industrial setup in massive quantity? The Gridseed supermega data center flipped the switch?

And suchmoon can decide about the three that are in. He has posted that he is reviewing the 3 but is inclined to keep them.  He needs to look on a better screen then his cell phone

Ok, I don't like doing this but I have to agree with HerbPean. These are totally utterly worthless user accounts very likely farmed by the same person. It would be unfair to the other participants to leave them in so let's remove them.

A while back i asked about measures to prevent people from entering multiple times. It did not seem like an issue at the time and thats the reply i got then. But seeing now how so many "new people" are showing up, i support "raising the bar" a bit.
1943  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: antminer s6 4500gh/s 1000watts on: December 11, 2015, 02:30:23 AM
The new antminer s6 wil come this mont
The antminer s6 gone have 4500 gh/s
Power 1000watts
I can not wait to order
What I find funny about this thread is he wasn't very far off about the next miner from Bitmaintech the S7 (4.86 Th/s 1210 W).  It could have been a pure guess, but also could have been rumors of goals being set around Bitmain.  I hope someone predicts the S8 as 10 Th/s 1500 W at the wall  Grin in the next few months.

S8 will be a big step for Bitmain as I think first we may see a 3 bay S7+ with 14-15TH.

S8 will then need a BM1386 and we are into uncharted territory as they probably the need to go straight to full custom on a 14/16nm Technology to get the speed & efficiency needed to make it worthwhile and be efficient enough after the halving. However agreed 10TH/s and 1500W giving 0.15J/GH sounds about right.

That said I would prefer to see a miner with 10TH/s taking 1200W, 0.12J/GH as you get a bigger choice of PSU's and the heat in their standard form factor is more manageable.

Rich

I think a S7+ makes sense first from past history.  They easicly can do the S7+ one day if they decide to.  So I think it is a easy extension.

S8 ... who knows not much talk as they are good at keeping stuff internal.

I would really dislike seeing a 3xS7 Frankenstein monster (again). A rectangle box form factor doing 7~8Th/s on 1400watts would be what i would like to see. (Maybe with a good PSU included for once?)

Then again it could be possible to buy individual "cubes" of S7+ which would probably 1200w~ as well but 6TH/s~ instead of 4~5TH/s.
1944  Bitcoin / Mining speculation / Re: $1500 budget, im torn in choices on miners on: December 11, 2015, 02:06:38 AM
ive been scorned by spondoolies and i have 10 antminers (1 s5 and 9 s3) now. with my budget im either stuck at getting two s4's (not having to buy a psu) for roughly 1300 for 4th or spend 1700 on an s7. going the s5 route, your spending roughly 400 on the miner plus another 80ish on a server psu and that lands you at 3.4ish th

my situation is a little different, i do truly have free electric i just dont want to abuse it. i had a sp30 running and sold it my bill is used to the <3000 watts running.

with an s4, i could potentially use the leftover to buy more btc as well.

if you have other ideas, im wide open.

Being in a similar situation as you, i set a smallish # of AMP(@120v sadly) i'm willing to put toward mining and after having maxed it with small miners, i'm left having to offline some miners to online  new one, so in this case i would save up for a S7.

If you have plenty of room on your electric grid, i would go for S5's at 300$ish + shipping, i prefer them over S4 for modding down the noise and better efficiency, also easy to overclock stable. (You can change the fans for the S4 but its annoying to "extract" and then open up, then merge the long wires with the new fans.)

The S5's are also a good middle ground between efficiency and hashrate density.

At the moment i'm torn between S5, S5+ single "cube" and S7. It will depend on the deals i can get.

Unplug the misbehaving board out of the loop and the rest should hash fine.

Thats what i did, but it still stop working sometimes, then start back by itself(immediately or after a few hours(yes seriously)), sometimes not.

Its not a big deal having to unplug/replug the BE Controller when it goes down but i'd rather just let someone have the <3 TH/s of these miners for their own project(and me maybe get 1TH/s of more "hand free" miners), or if they have a way to run these on a raspi or such, then these could possibly be actually good miners.

I wonder if it could be a VRM overheating issue. It's quite odd that they start back up by themselves. This reminds me of similar issues with KNC Neptune gear.

I have no idea. Today it was really hot and they worked no problem, the other day when ambient temp was 10c they acted up, same temp just before that for 2 days, no problems.

And sometime they both stop working at the same time (the controller) even though they're not connected together xD

The only thing they have in common is the pools i ran them on, so. I'd blame crap software not handling rare queries from the Pools or something.

Edit (So i'd like to receive some offers for these!)

i am just new here because i got a big problem: i sent btc to a wrong wallet address.  Cry    actually the receiver gave me the wrong address and it was not my fault.

OP, have you considered the receiver may just be claiming he didn't get the coin?  To get you to send again?

He got super scammed, clearly. The "receiver" sent him a BTC address, then went "Oops it was the wrong one." *roll eyes*

Please, common.
Yup I feel the same. Whom received his BTC from him If he loyal person. I am sure He ll return it back, another possibility also there If that wrong btc address guy may be Not active using his wallet. This two may can apply for him.

But its a lie. It was a clean BTC address never used before, which means the person who sent it to him was the person to generate it. The odds that he came upon a clean address, never used, that is not owned by him... and then mistake it for one of his and give that instead of his own address... is a joke.

the problem is, i dont have much info. wanted to purchase something and bought btc on localbitcoins. and sent from my localbitcoins wallet to the wallet i was given. yes, many will say that it was not that big amount. but for me it was all i had and now nothing is left. no btc, no $ and not anything. i also tried to find out with typing the wallet address in the the browser. but nothing. as one of you confirmed already that the address was fresh new and never used before.
my hope has gone, my trust in people has gone. just don't know how to proceed.  Cry

Give us the link to the user on localbitcoin that scammed you.

And do it here, with escrow next time maybe. Personally i don't deal with the hassle, i use Coinbase or used services such as Circle.

there is some people that sell S1 miner around $30 - $35 but i have to pay for the shipping and it's crazy expensive if i use DHL because it's weight more than 3 kg, any alternative? T_T

Save up for a S3 at least, if you have to pay so much for shipping. If you can get one local, then get what you can.

I can get S3 124$ shipped on Ebay, so having to pay 60$ for a S1 seem a bit nuts.

A bit steering away from the topic for your intent to selling these miners. But i have some AM Tubes that i have quite a bit of problems running off the crap BE controller. I got a UART USB converter but i can't find a version of already compiled windows cgminer/bfgminer that works.

Might i bother you as to where you got your RasPi image to run these?

Best option is Minera on a Rasp Pi. CrazyGuy created a custom image and also probably has the patched Cgminer.
I believe that's what it was on dogies guide that was used..
Thanks Blazed.

Yeah, can't figure it out. Got the image from his git, the cgminer does not support bet-clk, recompiling with config --enable-blockerupter solve that but still no device detected. I give up on these.
Yea I'm not having a great time trying to redownload the minera I know you can download cgminer straight to raspian however you spell it. When I get some time I will let you know how or if it works..

Ahh, thats nice of you. I recompiled the miner with --enable-blockerupter but its still not detected, so i'm not sure if there's some command line you need to put at runtime or if my USB-UART thing is just defective. =/
1951  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Any way to make IBM Bladecenter H 2880W fans quieter? on: December 10, 2015, 06:25:36 AM
I love those PSUs, I'm 20 of them. There's 2 models, RA and NA. NA sounds like a cat in a bag being kicked down the street, RA is much less whiny. Inaudible at 50% load or less, while NA is still loud at 20%.

I use 2 RAs with load sharing mode enabled in my house to power a 5 cube Titan space heater.

Yeah, i'd like some nice enclosure but indeed at 50% load, they are quiet enough.

I went crazy and put ton of electric tape around the ground and 12V, just in case my cat decide to go there. And then i added a milk crate over it. It makes me a bit fidgety, i'd rather have ATX. But hey for now they work. Later on i might sell them in Canada.
1952  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Any way to make IBM Bladecenter H 2880W fans quieter? on: December 10, 2015, 05:54:02 AM
You sure you guys can't put a resistor between some of the pins to regulate the fan speed?

I'm sure it's possible, but I wouldn't want to risk them overheating. Modding 120MM deltas on top of them is probably the best way to go.

Definitively do it this way.

Even my Platinum server PSU heat up with their ear-rape fan at full blast. Modding them to use big fans would make then cooler and much more quiet.

What platinum server PSU are you referring to? LOL at ear rape fan.

These;
http://www.digikey.com/product-detail/en/PFE1100-12-054RA/PFE1100-12-054RA-ND/3535541

Got mine from Quakefiend, they're pretty small/thin so modding them would be a pain. So to save my ear, i just put 50% load on them. At 70%+ its like a car that need to replace its breaks. The noise become ultra high pitch.

At 50% load they're better than S5 fans at 2600 RPM

I heard that the cloud mining sites don't actually mine themselves. Are they all ponzi schemes?

Not all. The only one i can vouch for remotely is Hashnest, since its Bitmain's. But i would steer well clear of anything that has not proved itself to be trustworthy. Its not because it pays that its legit.

Would Genenis-Mining be legit or another scam?

Seem like one of the Legit rip off ones;

TLDR: You wont profit or only profit marginally.

The problem is using a hosted service, you pay 8-10cents per kWh of hosting which is too much imo.
1957  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Any way to make IBM Bladecenter H 2880W fans quieter? on: December 10, 2015, 02:09:30 AM
Hi all,

I just hooked up three different IBM Bladecenter H 2880W PSU's to my brand new S7's, and boy the fans on these PSU's are incredibly loud! These PSU's have a high pitched sorta whistle sound, almost kinda like the whistle you hear on a turbo. These PSU's have a pitch more noticeable than the actual miners in the room.

My question is, is there any way to make these fans quieter at all? Or a replacement for the stock fans that are quieter? Otherwise, do I have any other options? I ideally wanted to run platinum PSU's to these miners, so if there is no solution, is there a recommended replacement that you guys suggest?

Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks.

Server PSU's are not known for being quiet.  I doubt you are able to make it what you consider "quiet".   If going for less noise I traditionally would send someone twords ATX vs server psu.   I don't know that I have seen much as far as making them quiet.  If someone can think of one please post, I could not find quickly.

I think they are just loud PSU's at end of day. They are great for their price and amount of power, not for quietness.

But the problem with this is the 10 PCIE cables the S7 want's.   That get's most ATX psu's where they are not to good for the job.

I think that EVGA 1300 with two extra PCIe extenders is OK for S7 batches 2, 4 and 6.
For batch 1 could be OK, depending on your optimal mhz setting and without overclocking
For batch 3, 5, 7 (and especially 7), EVGA is probably insufficient.
Batch 3,5 were close to borderline w/o overclocking, but probably insufficient if overclocking to 625.
batch 7 jumped to 1345w at the wall on EVGA 1300 from the getgo without any oveclock, so 1600 is probably needed, but they are expensive.
Batch 6 is OK even when overclocked to 650-4.3Th at 1160W at the wall.
batch 8-also probably needs Bitmain's PSU or EVGA 1600 (or 2880W IBM for two, of course).

EVGA G2 1300w at 1345w at the wall is just fine, that is only 1224W and they can feed 100% of their rated load 24/7 for their whole MSRP and they are garanteed 10 years, so...

Anyways TLDR; that is 94% load, no problem for a EVGA G2.

Phil was saying on some other thread that he was running EVGA 1300 at 1320W at the wall and it was OK short term, but became weird (probably unstable or "spiky') after 1-2 month of constant load.
I would like (if possible) to set up PSU and keep it going for the duration.

I don't have that problem on any of my miners and they're all running EVGA G2's. If the PSU spike after so little time, then its defective and should be RMA'd.

If you dont already have a 1300, then you can get the more expensive 1600W if you're looking for peace of mind.
1958  Economy / Computer hardware / [WTT/WTS][Canada]3x AM Tube on: December 10, 2015, 01:00:12 AM
I'm having a bad time keeping these running, so i'm wondering if anyone would be interested in swapping hardware. I'd love to trade them all for some more plug and play Antminers, at a GH loss/efficiency gain for me.

I have 3 BE Controller but they're a mess, they work most of the time but require a lot of micromagement. A board stop working, need to be replugged, then later it works, then later it doesnt work. I honestly can't tell if its because of bad boards or bad controllers. I can't manage to make it work by USB but i can give the Novak's USB UART i was given by hedgy73.

Maybe someone can make use of the USB-UART but i can't seem to.

As a refresher, here are the miner's specs;
Chips   96x ASICMiner Gen3
Hashrate   ~830GH, 920GH (OC)
Rated Voltage   12V
Rated Current   75A
Power.Consumption (at PSU)   ~900W, 1025W (OC)

Let me hear some offers? Smiley
1959  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTS] 2 Antminer S3's [Shipping from Australia] on: December 10, 2015, 12:43:38 AM
I haven't check their website in a while so I wasn't sure what to set the price at.
What do you think would be a fair price?

I do not know if the miner is worth more where you are because of taxes and stuff, similarly to the VAT the Eu has. But let say it was in the US and i was in the US, i'd expect to pay no more than 100-120$ for the perk of "having it NOW", because binge buying frenzy.

With people being desperate for hashrate because of the current raise in BTC might be able to get you 120~150$~ 200$+ is ridiculous.

For comparison. The S7 is 31cents per GH, so at the same $/GH, the S3 is 141$, however the S7 is 3 time less watt per GH, so all in all, the S3 would be worth 90-100$ at most. When the frenzy is over and people realize with the difficulty rise, the miners are not worth as much as they think, the price will go down.

TLDR: Start with asking 150$ shipping included locally (if its cheap) and see where that bring you.
1960  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: Any way to make IBM Bladecenter H 2880W fans quieter? on: December 10, 2015, 12:37:13 AM
Would the 1300 run my batch 7 miners tho? I've read the actual usage can sometimes spike up to 1400w on batch 7

1400 watts at the wall *0.9 (efficiency) = 1260 watts fed to the miner. You won't have any headroom for overclocking further but its "ok". I run my EVGA G2 1000 at 1000-1050w at the wall because i wish to be a tiny bit conservative, but if you already have the 1300, i'd go with that. Personally i like to keep my At the wall at up to what the thing is rated, for maximizing the lifetime of the PSU.

The downside is at close to 100% load you're not at 92% efficiency anymore. If you dont have a 1300 yet, you could look into something higher.

If you have more concerns about running the miner at 95% load, check the Johnyguru reviews.
