Whether it will be profitable or not depends on how teh prices of the coins you mine rise or fall. For example you could be mining some new coin which does not seem to be profitable. But you keep collecting them; then some day the coin appears on Cryptsy and other exchanges and the value skyrockets.

I know CPU mining is bad but what software could I use to try it out or how can I get it on guiminer.
If you have a new generation CPU like Intel core i7, you can try scrypt mining on Alt-Coins. I have tried mining on i7 in past and I was getting around 50 khash/sec, so don't extpect huge profits, but you will at least learn basics of mining and can move forward. For CPU mining, use Pooler's CPU miner (google it or search this forum). 50 khash on i7, that's weird. I had 20 mhash on my mac air (i5). Maybe you meant mhash? You are talking 20 Mhashes with SHA256 mining, while 50 Khashes refers to SCRYPT mining. That's correct. 50 khash/sec on SCRYPT mining.

Thank you!
(so how does this work? You pay us upfront for one week. And after one week we post in this thread again to re-qualify?)

Good to see the giveaways go. Many of them were just attention-grabber anyways, rather than actually giving away coins. Just look at the DogeCoin giveaway thread by FORKPOOL. It has 1228 posts and not even a few people have been paid.

I have that setup, I've got about $300 in it, makes about $500 a month @ 550kh Can you please elaborate what coin you're mining. I am using a multi-pool but I can't get more than $250 at 650 khash/sec

When I tried to send 0.77 BTC from my QT wallet to my online wallet today, I was told I had to pay a 0.001 fee. (it was either that or 0.01)
You might be right here, but just checking. I am using Multibit wallet and it charges me 0.0001 BTC (not 0.001 BTC), so that's $0.08, not $0.8 at current rates. But you mentioned Qt wallet and I have no idea about the charges on that one.

So can I use any ASIC to mine any SHA-256 Altcoin?
Yes. And there are some news of scrypt ASIC development from a few companies.

I wouldn't say stop syncing. Get it up to date and occasionally load it back up to sync. I do that once a week.
I used to do that. But I would say if you don't want your Bitcoin wallet to just keep syncing and don't want to store several GB of synced data on your PC, just use Multibit wallet.

Let me help the OP in destroying the Bitcoins! I have setup a wallet and have already thrown it into Pacific ocean and I saw a shark eating the flash drive.
If you want to destroy as many Bitcoins as possible, send them to that wallet. I swear I won't tell anyone which shark it was.

Crockett, Using even a fast computer for 'Bitcoin' mining is useless since this is the era of ASIC miners. Your best bet is to mine any scrypt alt-coins like anti-scam suggested. You can get decent speeds with R9 280x. Mine scrypt coins (check coinwarz.com) and trade them for Bitcoins.
Your current Bitcoin wallet is also useless for you now. Stop syncing.

LOL... i don't mind dumping some of the sheets if I can get my hands on $10 Bitcoins!

Maybe you're right. I didn't bother to lookup their native website, just looked now and I know what you mean.

Today early morning in my sleep, I had a weird dream about Bitcoin price fall. I have setup an alarm on my smartphone to alert me when Bitcoin crosses specified price barriers. So in my dream I am sitting somewhere in my house and I hear my phone alarm; I check it and I see the Bitcoin price is at $500! I quickly rush to my computer to place some buy orders, but the fu*king computer is taking forever to boot up. So I thought 'hey, I'll just use the app on my phone to place a buy order.' But now I can't find my fu*king phone! And when I found it after a couple of minutes, I see the Bitcoin price at $3 ! YES, THREE FUC*ING DOLLARS! And by the time I placed an order, it was at $10. So I bought many of them at $10 and now waiting for the prices to bounce back, BINGO! And then the REAL phone alarm goes of and I'm back from my sleep and my sweet dreams are over!

You can try mining alt-coins instead of Bitcoins. Does your computer have a graphics card? You can run a CPU-mining software and a GPU-mining software on same machine simultaneously. This way you can reach some acceptable mining speed but don't expect huge profits.
Would you mind telling us newbies how to do that? Thanks As Trololo suggested, choose your currency and join a pool. To mine with CPU, you can use CPUminer (just google it). If you have a NVIDIA GPU, use CUDAminer. For ATI cards, use cgminer. There are plenty of mining tutorials on this forum and Google. Search for 'Litecoin Mining Guide'. While the guide may be for Litecoin, it will work for any scrypt coin.

100% shares being rejected on mining pools (minersbest & blocksolved). Anyone else having same problem?

if it comes down to the wire, between the governments killing bitcoin and you giving your life to save it, would you?
how many people would?
I wonder if Satoshi himself would give up his own life to save Bitcoin.
