2961  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bumping threads on: July 20, 2021, 02:33:04 PM
Bumps are limited to one within every 24hours
13. Bumps, "updates" are limited to once per 24 hours per thread. Bumping multiple threads at the same time is allowed if it's not annoying. [2][e]

You should also note that some boards have advanced bump features which was added some time back. Check this thread for more details - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=5183553.msg52420076#msg52420076
2962  Economy / Exchanges / Re: Exchange won't release bitcoins unless I verify identity. Advice appreciated. on: July 20, 2021, 06:34:11 AM
Firstly not not keys, not your coins. If you're using a custodian exchange then you are pretty much subject to their rules, including freezing accounts, blocking transactions or giving your personal information up to the authorities and these exchanges indemnify themselves with various terms on their ToS which each user first agrees to before being able to use their platform.

Your best bet would be to fulfill their requirements first and then wait to get their response before seeking legal advice.
You can also bug them on their social platforms and email, they may reach to the threat ofna scandal and open up your account.
2963  Other / Meta / Re: Enable posting by paying fee on: July 19, 2021, 08:50:19 PM
If any very-veteran members want to volunteer, I can give you the ability to whitelist users.
I do not think I pass as very-veteran, but I'll be interested in giving it a shot if given the opportunity

Before whitelisting someone, you have to do something to be pretty sure that they're not evading a ban and just going to get banned again.
This would be difficult to ascertain and cannot be 100% efficient, but would be more efficient than a payment mechanism which simply allows anyone in as long as they can pay the gate fee while forcing a few to pay a fee for something they know nothing about.
2964  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: How did you first hear about Bitcoin? on: July 19, 2021, 08:40:31 PM
Heard about it from an acquaintance, got quite fascinated by the concept and dived right into researching about it, I haven't looked back since then. This was during the beginning of the 2018 bear market, which gave me an experience of the market cycles.
It took me not long from here to own my first fraction of a coin.
2965  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Mining vs Holding on: July 19, 2021, 06:12:37 PM
The thing is with investing it bares a lot of risks and you have to time it correctly with mining its generated passive income all the time.
Mining also has its fair share of risks, most shared with the average investor and some risks of its own; such as stead source of affordable electricity, change in difficulty level overtime, competition from more modern mining gear, maintainance, drops in coinbase reward etc. If one does not know what they're are doing an has a limited capital, investing directly would be the best bet, and is more passive than mining.
2966  Other / Meta / Re: Account permanently banned, probably due to spam or plagiarism. on: July 19, 2021, 06:26:37 AM
What do I have to do now?
Your only options are; this appeal thread here which a mod/staff could reply to and to send an email to the address provided in the ban message, it might take a while to get a response, so you'll need to be patient.
2967  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Pride and prejudice against cryptocurrency investors on: July 19, 2021, 06:11:21 AM
What would you do to your prejudiced friends?
Nothing really. Bitcoin is over 12 years old now and lots of information are available for anyone interested in learning more about it. I can help out anyone who is interested in learning about it, but would not try to convince anyone who isn't, if they do not understand it yet, they do not plan to.

If you don't believe me or don't get it, I don't have time to try to convince you, sorry.
2968  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: The best pronoun to describe Satoshi Nakamoto? on: July 19, 2021, 04:42:02 AM
This forum is privacy centered and the identity of majority of the members here are not known, so we learn everyday to use the right or appropriate pronouns for them. "They" is most appropriate imo when the gender is unknown, as mentioned above you can also use 'he' where you are not too certain and be right most of the time.

For Satoshi which could be a he, she, a group or organization, I personally use he, but since you're skeptical about which to use, try using they or the name alone.

P.S, I addressed the OP solely as 'you' in this reply.
2969  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Why green bitcoin mining has become a trend? on: July 18, 2021, 10:01:52 PM
It is much more sustainable, although of course not as cheap as mining using non-renewable energy sources.
But it actually is cheaper to use renewable sources, with it being more sustainable. Solar was declared to be the cheapest form of electricity last year and these renewable sources are constantly improving as you mentioned and could get cheaper in the future.
To make it even cheaper, Bitcoin miners can get it for a discount as some make use of excess power which would normally have gone to waste.
2970  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto Portfolio Diversification on: July 18, 2021, 07:59:22 PM
Diversification can be a good base to provide liquidity and more income and also help reduce the risk of market volatility.

technically, cryptocurrencies are one asset class. However, the large disparity between these assets makes them ideal for all types of investment. For example, you can allocate your wallet with 50% bitcoins, 15% ETH, 10% ETH Tokens, 5% stablecoins, 13% altcoins and 7% NFTs.
• Diversification within a highly correlated market sector does not provide liquidity neither does it help reduce market volatility. As you mentioned cryptocurrencies are one asset class and contrary to the op, this doesn't make it ideal for all types of investments as majority of the coins are cheap replicas of others, while a lot more are scams.

• You do not need to own multiple coins, much less when you know little or nothing about those other niches, and setting percentages for certain areas just puts you under pressure to buy something for a "diversified portfolio".
2971  Other / Meta / Re: Enable posting by paying fee on: July 18, 2021, 11:13:55 AM
Besides paying the fee, there's also the option for your relative to get whitelisted and be able to post without paying the proxy ban fee, I don't know how often this works, but it was used during the forum hack when transactions for proxybans were not processed and users were manually whitelisted.
Post the account username here and hope a staff or admin addresses it.
2972  Other / Meta / Re: Is Bitcointalk.org losing user base? on: July 17, 2021, 05:24:10 PM
This is quite an interesting thread with lots of similarly interesting opinions; The charts in the OP does show a progressively decreasing engagement in merit exchanges which could be indicative of a decrease in overall engagements, but previous higher numbers may not be something to miss as the forum has for long been filled with spammers leading to changes like the newbie jail and enhanced newbie requirements and the early period of the merit launch led to the growth of lots of account farms - Not all traffic is beneficial.

About users losing interest; This could be due to the retro forum layout which is a bit difficult to navigate for someone new to the forum, I can remember how alien this forum looked to me in my first few weeks here, but anyone who is truly interested in Bitcoin should be interested in this forum, regardless.
As the OP mentioned, there are lots of useful information here and members do not have to be active or even logged in to access them, if I didn't have much to contribute, I could simply use this forum as a digital library for Bitcoin and my presence would not be felt, I can imagine some use it this way.

Does the administration need to do anything to influence traffic?
No, in my opinion. Bitcoin does not change with the times and does not market itself, this forum is a reflection of Bitcoin and should mimick it.
Comparing bitcointalk to other forums is not necessary imo, as any other forum run the way this is would have lost almost all of their userbase, regular social platforms constantly market their service and make regular changes to their software, btt on the other hand has had the exact same outlook for over ten years with no updates, but still retains a good number of active users.

As I've mentioned in another thread, a new forum software would not matter much in attracting new users, but only to add changes that majority of members have been requesting.
2973  Other / Meta / Re: Request for Nigeria local board on: July 17, 2021, 02:31:46 PM
By the way, did any of you contact forum staff directly and asked them what's exactly needed to get your own local board, like if there is some specific criteria to be met?
I don't know if anyone has contacted a forum staff directly to know if there's any criteria, I know I haven't, but a global mod has weighed on on the discussion with his own reason, which is about the lack of a common language, different from the general English, and it has been extensively discussed how boards are not only for specific languages, but users who have a lot in common and there is also a pidgin language which is the main language used in the Nigerian thread.

Besides this the only other criteria I think, is being popular enough, another box the Nigerian board also ticks.
2974  Economy / Economics / Re: Higher Inflation Is Here to Stay for Years on: July 16, 2021, 08:48:35 PM
In Nigeria, the government is talking tough on cutting inflation down as price of goods keep rising, the challenge for inflation is corruption. Paying leap service to policies contribute to lead to bad pricing.
Living in Nigeria, I can ascertain that the situation is quite bad and has been for a number of years. The naira has been losing value long before the pandemic and with a widening gap between the elite and lower class, there has been a drop is SMEs and lack of opportunities for businesses leading to higher inflation.

Corruption plays a major factor in this as fiscal policies to rescue the economy are non existent and while some Nations would recover from the effects of the pandemic, some others would not and may experience hyper inflation for a much longer time.
2975  Other / Meta / Re: Have you noticed many newbies/junior members opening threads lately? on: July 16, 2021, 08:01:55 PM
Don't try to judge anybody here, we are all learning. It wouldn't be bad if he/she is corrected not castigating them. We'll started as a novice and we'll are expected to show an epitome. No body is perfect!
I have been on both sides of the divide; the lowest rank and the highest and I can understand why lower ranked members can view the retorts of higher ranked members as standoffish and also how higher ranked members would see posts from lower ranked as insincere or made to bait others for merits.

This is a general forum and there are different kind of members here, the trolls, spammers, scammers, helpful members etc, and regardless of your rank you will have to grow a thick skin so as not to take any comment here too personal, while also being open to learning regardless of your rank.
2976  Other / New forum software / Re: Ability to Block Users on: July 15, 2021, 11:51:59 PM
I believe the block feature on most platforms is not much different from that on the forum and would not stop trolls creating multiple threads. If I blocked a user on Twitter for example, they would not be able to access my profile or interact directly with me and vice versa, if I ignored a user on this forum, they would be able to see my posts and profile as normal, but I can't see their posts or replies. In both cases they can still make as much threads as possible, only that I can't see them.
2977  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Meaning of mining on: July 15, 2021, 07:58:34 PM
It probably will at some point, especially when there no longer are block rewards, and miners will be relying on fees to recuperate their effort.
I am of the opinion that miners would have such a long time to prepare for this event that it should not have a major impact, as they should have adjusted already.
Within the next 3 halvings, the coinbase reward would drop below 1BTC, and we are still over a hundred years to the last mined bitcoins with more than 25 halvings between, so the effect from less mining reward should be expected in the next couple of years and should be balanced out after a while.
2978  Other / Meta / Re: [Proposal] Hiding the signature space in the Off-Topic section on: July 15, 2021, 07:44:05 PM
Off topic creates a section where members can discuss general topics which may not be as complicated as some other boards on the forum, reason why it attracts account farmers and spammers as well. Anything does not go, but it's easier to post there without the need for careful thought.

The issue with hiding signatures or any other form of restrictions is how it affects mods and other members. Users can carefully avoid the off topic section if they are not interested in the topics, but if restrictions are placed, this spammers would move into other sections and this would have an adverse effect on the quality of discussions as those boards are more niche; It will also increase the workload on the staffs.
2979  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Don't say a thread was made because of merit on: July 14, 2021, 06:49:20 PM
Everyone wants a merit. Telling a member that he made a thread because he wants merits is like telling someone he is hunting for a job because he needs money, and true everyone wants money and everyone desire is to gain merit in a giving write up .
When users are accused of merit hunting, it's usually because they made a post with the sole aim of baiting other members to give them merit and not to add value to the community; Like a newbie mirroring introductory messages of others which for them merits or posting random threads about the forum, other members and the merit system without returning to join any of the discussions, such habits come off very like merit hunting.

Merits and hunting for a job do not quite fit, you need a job in real life but do not expect a pat on the back for every comment you make daily, treat this forum as your daily conversations, just about a certain related topics.
2980  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: How to announce yourself as a Newbie! on: July 14, 2021, 06:39:10 PM
Post as you Learn:
This is the best method to adopt as a newbie. When you learn, you create posts asking questions where necessary. By this, people will see your willingness to learn and help you to grow.
I agree with this to be the best method to adopt, besides other users seeing your willingness to learn, individuals learn faster when they discuss the topic they are trying to learn and you will also be able to correct wrong ideas you may have discovered online when you discuss it with others.
I personally learnt more about topics I made threads on than those I simply read on and moved on.

This was actually the method I used, however, it is not the best method to use. In this method, you will suffer because, some established members might mistakenly think that you are someone's "Alt Account". If this happens, no matter how good your post would be as a newbie, those people will not merit it, they will think that it is one Hero or Legendary member that is behind the account.
I do not think 'some days' is enough time for a newbie to post like a veteran on the forum, you'll only show knowledge on the basics of the forum and other topics that have interested you. I can however understand how an account could be mentally tagged to belong to an older member, but this shouldn't matter much down the road if the account keeps posting useful content and keeps to the rules.
