At least one person knows who Satoshi is.
Technically this is only true if you assume that he is still alive. Unless you get metaphysical and count God.

Could you change the title to be less misleading, please? It's not known, it's speculation.
It's known... just not to most people. At least one person knows who Satoshi is.

Strongly agree with the title. Even if I have my Bitcoin address in my signature, you can't prove that I actually own it unless you hack into my computer.
True if you don't spend any. Once you do - out goes your identity. How do you infer from a transaction being made from an address in a signature that the transaction actually was done by this person?! If I would put there for example a MtGox address, it would be swiped but I'd never ever have owned the private key to it. You will be only deanonymized for the address(es) that you use to pay a merchant from - and these can be from a mixing/proxy service. Haha, idea! Quick, everyone pick an address from the blockchain whose private key you do or don't own and post it in your sig. Anarchy would be fun untill I put a bullet in your head because your wife is not sucking me off... That is, of course, exactly why governments must not exist. The damage as people like yourself can do with a single bullet is bad enough, but what you can do when given access to armies and taxation is beyond horrifying. This.

I would like to see people writing e-books and leaving behind a bitcoin address on the last page. The writer would try to let it go viral, it would be like passing trough a hat. If the book was really good it would get higher views and a higher donation likelihood.
The trouble with this is that people would make copies and put their own address in it. I know how that goes, it would only be a matter of time.
My question is, can the blockchain be used to verify that it is you who wrote the book?
If you can demonstrate that an address that you control was the first address printed with the manuscript, then yes. The Bitcoin protocol allows for "message signing" and "verifying" whereby it can be proved that one party has control of a certain address by signing a message with the associated private key.

Update:
Due to scammers, we are going to be selling ONLY to our pre-existing clients once we reopen this week. There will also be some new policies in effect.
What a terrible shame! I just read through this thread, and read some rave reviews about this business and their customer service, only to find the door slammed shut at the end! I would have liked to have been a customer, but I can understand somewhat what you all might be going through.

Never knew you could store BTC on floppy dicks.
Tattoos have been mentioned already.

why is this good news? Wouldn't it be better if bitcoin dropped to $10USD and stayed there, and the stability caused more merchants to actually accept it for payment.
Right now, the market is saying that $10 is not a fair price for a bitcoin. This may change any minute.

MTGOX (Magic The Gathering Online Exchange) has gotten waaaaay too big for its britches.
|
|
|
Protection does not serve finding the right price. If you can't handle price drops, then don't trade on exchanges. No nannycrat rules please, it's already killing the 'normal' world.
This.

Let the free market decide!
If MTGOX wants to start some plunge protection scheme, that's their business. Other exchanges could do the same or could do differently.
Let it ride, this is still an experiment! The satoshi client is not even version "1" yet, and it is still experimental software.

I was just wondering if these two sites were the only ones of their kind.
Do any other sites "read" the blockchain?

Perhaps this isn't the proper thread for this, but I am a newbie to BitInstant and I have a question...
Suppose I want to help a friend obtain $500 worth of bitcoins. After creating the order, with the ZipZap fee, the amount to pay is shown as $503.95
How much bitcoin can I/we get for the $500 order amount? - What is the current cost of a BitInstant bitcoin? (I am assuming that the BitInstant price would be slightly higher than the MtGox current price, but I would like to know how much)

Wuala already accepts bitcoins, and is more secure than Dropbox. I use Wuala. But the more that accept BTC, the merrier!

This might be a silly question but got no answer fron the blockchainīs zendesk support for a week now. If I add a watch only address into my wallet is there any unlucky chance to have my change sent to them if using the web or the app?
Thanks in advance!
With blockchain.info, the change goes back to the original address, which is the address from which it was sent. So the answer to you question based on my experience, is NO.
