301  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [info] Bitcoin playing cards on: January 24, 2024, 03:08:55 AM
Yeah, I had my eye on this deck of cards for sale on Amazon for a while until I decided I just didn't want to spend the money:

The price difference between the Bicycle cards and the ones above isn't that much, and I actually like the Bicycle packaging a lot more--orange is an eye-catching color, and the texture of the Rich Life Style cards seems too slick.  And man, I like the ace of spades card and the seed phrase recovery card that's in the Bicycle deck.

You would think that the cards would have a little more style or thought put into them, don't get me wrong I am all for a bitcoin playing card deck!
I think there's a lot of attention to detail here, and they might look just a tad minimalist but overall it appears to be a collectible that'd be well worth the money.
302  Economy / Speculation / Re: What are your expectations for the few weeks after the halving period? on: January 23, 2024, 07:49:28 PM
There is so much expectation about the bitcoin Halving, and it has even attracted many investors to bitcoins who want to be able to profit from bitcoins after the halving.
Since I'm one of those who think all the halvings should be priced in well before they happen, I would expect the price to do nothing special.  On the other hand, I've become quite familiar with the world of crypto over the years and know how much it draws in the speculators, especially if they think they can just waltz in and grab some free money like you described.  So it just might happen that the price does get a boost because of an influx of new money, but not strictly because of the halving itself.

And hasn't this been discussed to death, not just with bitcoin's halvings but throughout the altcoin community as well?  The fact is that none of us know for sure, and you can either guess with your wallet by buying bitcoin, selling it, or just remaining neutral (as I'm doing) and watching the parade from the sidewalk.  What I do know is that bitcoin's price has dropped significantly over the past week or so and I'm still trying to figure out if there's a logical explanation for that or if it's just another one of the crazy swings that shakes out the timid that we see from time to time.  I've heard all this talk about it going to $100k post-halvening, but I'm not betting on that.
303  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTT] 1 of 2 Squirrelbits TI Slab “Burn It All F***in Down” on: January 23, 2024, 03:07:29 PM
I’ll have to check with LO. Recently the best way to get ahold
Of him has been carrier pigeon. Luckily one just returned and seems up for the challenge
There are a lot of cats where I live, and while I'm somewhat afraid for the pigeon's life I would be happy to strap a box or bag of aluminum to it for the return trip to wherever LO lives.  Better have him send one that's been on steroids, as it'll be one hell of a flight home.  Cheesy
304  Economy / Collectibles / Re: [WTT] 1 of 2 Squirrelbits TI Slab “Burn It All F***in Down” on: January 23, 2024, 03:54:02 AM
Pretty sure LOs first squirrelbits were aluminum… melted down from pop cans he recycled… always asking me to save the tabs cuz they had the most aluminum and required the least amount of refining lol
Oh now that's interesting....all of these goodies caught my eye, even if I'm not familiar with their history.  If any can tabs are needed in order to produce anything bitcoin-related, I have about 3-4 pounds worth that I've been hoarding from every can I come across, plus a lot more than that in crushed aluminum cans that I have no real plans for.  I'd be willing to ship what I've got free of charge within the US or for a reasonable cost overseas just to help out.

I love this section for all the neat stuff.  I hate this section because it makes the collector in me itch like poison ivy.
305  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Why don't you use DEX? on: January 23, 2024, 03:06:13 AM
I don't trade crypto like a lot of others on this forum do, but thinking back to years ago when there were services like Circle around, with which you could buy and sell bitcoin from a reasonably reputable firm with absolute ease makes me pine for those days.  If you're a US citizen and don't have a Coinbase account (those fuckers), what's an easy way to do that anymore?  Damned if I can think of any.

So I'd love to use a DEX for fiat transactions--assuming I had money to buy bitcoin on the regular--but as mentioned, liquidity/volume is low, and since I haven't become familiar with any of the exchanges out there, I haven't used one.  The principle of decentralized exchanges does appeal to me, however, and I'm guessing if someone could get ahold of Satoshi and poll him on his opinion of the DEX concept he'd be all for them.

These have been around for what, at least a few years now, right?  Given how many people care about their privacy and don't have as many hangups as I do, I would've thought they'd have caught on far more than they have.  Ah well, I suppose if governments decide to crack the whip harder than they already are, they will.  Hopefully.
306  Economy / Economics / Re: richdad poordad has no more guide after achieving freedom on: January 22, 2024, 09:50:28 AM
OP are you really criticizing some self-appointed financial self-help guru for not telling you enough?  Most of those shitty books on how to become wealthy that are written by people who basically got lucky shouldn't have been written at all, much less had any readership, and never mind the people who hang on their every word.

If everyone followed the same investment strategy, that strategy would become a losing one very quickly.  True, there are methods such as value investing (props to Buffett) that have shown to be winners consistently, but like Buffett you really have to dig in and do it full-time if you want to do it right.  I wouldn't listen to anything that rich dad-poor dad dude or anyone like him has to say.

My man, when you make posts like the one from which I snipped those phrases you're just blabbering away, and frankly you're not off to a good start.  If you've got something to say and presumably aren't proficient in English, just keep it concise and to the point.  Too many members write rambling, boring posts and think that the more words you can stuff into them, the better they are.  That isn't true; taking that route will guarantee nobody will read what you've written.

Also, I know this is B&H but as for the rest of your post....you're stating a lot of obvious things to members who've been here only a few months, and basic common sense things that don't need to be stated.  Rethink your strategy.[/list]
308  Other / Meta / Re: Admin/Mods: Please ban "jvanname" on: January 20, 2024, 03:06:14 AM
If you want to have a decent conversation about anything, then you will need to get off this thread. I have made plenty of other threads that add plenty of value like this one.

Here are some ways to design AI so that it is inherently safer and more predictable and interpretable.
<snip>

or this one

I am an altcoin creator/mathematician (this post is not about any particular coin but about the technology underlying all cryptocurrency technologies), and as a mathematician, I have developed the notion of an LSRDR to evaluate the cryptographic security of small block ciphers, but I later discovered that LSRDRs and similar constructions can be used to evaluate the security of nearly any substitution-permutation network.
<snip>

Sweet mother Mary and jangling Joseph, that is some of the most bloviated blah blah blah I've ever had the displeasure of crossing my eyes at.  I'm no P(iled)h(igher and)D(eeper) in mathematicobullcrapola, but from the looks of that mile-high concrete wall of text it could well have been AI-generated, and I would not doubt it in the least.

I've kept my mouth shut about this silly debate thus far and after this I will once again shut it, but if you think you're seriously making an impressive display of knowledge, you ain't my friend.  The community is telling you so, too.

And guys, if you argue with a crazy person long enough it becomes hard for an outside observer to tell who the crazy person is.  Words of wisdom.
309  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin ETF Hype and Leverage on: January 20, 2024, 01:05:42 AM
"Be fearful when others are greedy and be greedy only when others are fearful" - Warren Buffett.

Even the biggest coins can fall or rise 10% in a single day with no reason. Going into leveraged trading with crypto is a russian roulette.
I don't know what the Buffett quote has to do with the last two sentences, but the former is a nugget of wisdom and the latter I absolutely agree with.  It's easy enough to get wiped out in the stock market if you're using too much leverage, and the swings in stocks are nowhere near as mind-blowing as those in crypto.

Unfortunately, my journey ended with a loss of 2 BTC.
Dude, I would give my remaining nut (RIP, lost nut) for 2BTC.  It's hard for me to wrap my head around losses that big, as I've never had that much to play around with.  From the tone of your post, you seem to be taking it in stride and thus I have to assume you're a muthafukkin' baller.  Hope you learned a good lesson.
310  Economy / Reputation / Re: Obvious Merit Scammer / Merit Buyer created a “Raffle” thread lol on: January 19, 2024, 11:43:55 AM
Jesus, are people still buying/selling merits anywhere, not just on bitcointalk but on other platforms?  Seems like it's been a long time since I've heard about crap like this.  I'm actually curious as to what a single merit is going for on the black market, assuming such a market still exists.

Fuck that member.  Even if he had an alt account with merits to give away, my guess is that it was a scam attempt or some other shenanigans.
311  Economy / Reputation / Re: Farewell on: January 17, 2024, 11:37:55 AM
Bro, I hope you're lying for some anonymity or other kind of reason and that you're not terminally ill.  Seriously.

If you are telling the truth, I'm so sorry for you and hope a medical miracle happens.  You brought a lot to the forum since you've been here, and you established an excellent reputation right from the get-go.  I just checked to see when you registered, and you've been a member longer than I thought but I remember you coming here and spreading knowledge like very few newcomers do.

Take care of yourself for however long you've got left on the big blue marble.  You'll be missed.
312  Other / Meta / Re: Allow to make thread self-moderated even after posting on: January 17, 2024, 12:27:15 AM
Not a good idea. Imagine I create a topic today and then after 4 months I turn it into a self-moderated topic and delete all the posts of those who replied there.  Grin
Scammers would love that so much. Trolls a like.
And then everyone who cares so much about their total post count would be in an uproar, which would then light Meta on fire for at least a month with complaints.

Don't get me wrong, there have been times when I've created a thread and then after reading some of the standard bitcointalk idiocy wished I could have switched it to a self-moderated one, but the idea of implementing the ability for members to do that would just be bad all around.  Theymos no doubt realizes this and isn't likely to even consider it--kind of like many of the good suggestions that get brought up now and again. (just busting your iron balls, boss man)
313  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Newbies are not Scums.... Learning is a Process and it's progressive. on: January 16, 2024, 11:59:40 AM
This platform is kind of becoming toxic to me.... I guess I will take my leave... Must people behave disrespectful to earn points???
It's not for you, then.  And by the way, there's no point system for disrespect shown toward newbies or anyone else.  It just so happens that there are a fuckload of scammers, degenerate gamblers, perverts, retards, and just plain stupid people making posts (or worse, creating threads), and it's usually so they can earn merits-->rank up-->earn as much $ as possible.

It's been that way for years.  Don't let the door hit your ass on the way out.  And yeah I know I'm late in saying that but I just stumbled across this thread.

Growing a thicker skin will go a long way though …
From what people who venture out into the real world tell me, youngsters these days have nothing even closely resembling a thick skin--I don't know if those "safe spaces" still exist, but that's a good example of how unprepared the newer generations are for the harsh realities of life.  Some members of this forum can be brutal, but if they're making a valid point you've just got to roll with it.  And Jesus, if anyone is getting upset IRL because of anything on a discussion forum, there's something seriously wrong with their temperament.
314  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Announcements (Altcoins) / Re: [ANN] {Subi Network Unreal Realities} on: January 16, 2024, 11:31:47 AM
Nice little premine, Good luck guys!

And 15% to the dev
I know I'm a little late to this disco ball-having, crackhouse-looking shitcoin party but those things you described seem to be par for the course with all of these new ghostrider algo coins.

And the ANN threads look like they were made with a cookie cutter.  Zpool posts, Xeggex posts, Rplantxyz usually has most of the hashrate, and all of the same old stuff....so if any of you don't smell scam coins when you visit ANN threads like this, go see an ear, nose, and throat doc an get some tests done.  The only purpose of these sorry excuses for cryptocurrencies is to enrich the creator-scammers.
315  Economy / Speculation / Re: Isn't it exciting... on: January 15, 2024, 09:25:16 PM
Assume you're being sarcastic, but I'll bite.
Ah!  Said sarcasm would have flown right over my dingleberry of a head were it not for that stealth link in the form of a question mark.  I haven't read anything from Coindesk in a while, and it seems like they're writing for teenagers with next to no knowledge of finance/markets.

I don't know about you all here, but even if the ETF thing was a "sell the news" situation, I think market sentiment is pretty bullish with a long-term view--so there might have been a dip after those ETFs got approved, but I have a feeling that there's still an upward trend underneath it all.

That said, bitcoin still has a long way to go before it reaches a new ATH.  I'm not complaining about a valuation of $43k-ish by any means, but the previous ATH was well above that.  Once again I kneel before the market gods and pray that bitcoin doesn't take off like a rocket and reach heights that it can't sustain.  We all know that's happened a few times before.
316  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Xmr mixed with Btc, good idea? on: January 15, 2024, 07:02:24 PM
It's not easy to do privacy correctly nowadays for Bitcoin.
My take is that if you indeed want privacy, just stay in Monero ecosystem. If you want to do good investment, use Bitcoin.
If you mix them you can easily get something worse than you'd expect, whether you'll know it or not.
I'd say that about sums it up, but I don't quite understand OP's precis of "mixing" bitcoin and monero.  I have a strange feeling he either doesn't know what he's talking about or is trying to get some merit.

In crypto, bitcoin is king of kings; it kicked cryptocurrency off and remains the most popular, recognized, talked about on the news, and has the largest market cap with *only* a max of 21 million coins.  So if you're looking for an investment in crypto, it beats XMR hands down.  You already said that and made the point about privacy, so I won't belabor it.  But honestly, there isn't a question of having to choose one coin versus the other for most people.  Privacy-oriented individuals naturally flock to XMR, and ROI-wise, it isn't as though it hasn't performed well over the years.  Here's a chart from CMC showing both BTC and XMR:

How frightening it is that some people remember so well some of the things I've posted, even if only in jest.  I must keep this in mind and not brag about masculine endowment and such.  And what lack of experience are you talking about?
318  Economy / Reputation / Re: What privileges does LoyceV have? on: January 14, 2024, 06:31:36 PM
What privileges does LoyceV have?
I'm happily married and have healthy kids Smiley
I don't think those technically count as privileges but more as blessings or being fortunate (assuming the marriage is good).  But what the hell do I know?

So this whole thing is a non-issue, I guess.  I was mildly concerned right up until I read FatFork's post and looked at the thread OP linked to, but now that it's pretty clear LoyceV hasn't been granted God-mode status by Theymos in the name of the CIA, the FBI, and all of the alphabet agencies across the globe, can the thread be locked now?
319  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Crypto scams flourish most during bull runs. on: January 14, 2024, 02:40:01 AM
Rug pulls and ponzi have been among the most popular forms of scams in these periods.
Yeah, you are right, rug pulling is a scam that is very popular during the bull run.
I don't know if this is a language issue or what, but a "rug pull" isn't a specific type of scam.  It's just two words that keep getting repeated by a generation of people who like to create new words to describe old phenomena--the same generation that took the word cringe and made it into a noun somehow.

I seriously hope most of you know this already and stop parroting stuff you hear on social media sites or wherever.  Be skeptical.  Think critically.
320  Other / Meta / Re: was gambling board restricted from merits? on: January 13, 2024, 11:50:50 PM
Most merits source do not like boards that deals with some risks.
I can tell you that as a merit source who offers to review members' posts for them, I've become quite suspicious of some of the posts in the gambling section, e.g., there might be a group of alt accounts posting nearly the same thing and all PMing me around the same time requesting a post history review.  That's why I made this amendment to my offer:

First I'd like to say that when I get requests for reviews, I'm always on the lookout for shenanigans.  The rule of this forum since I've been a member is that if something can be abused in order to milk it for all it's worth, there's going to be a bunch of idiot shitposters trying to do it.  Therefore when I started my offer to the community I expected people to get over on me in as many ways as can be imagined.

Over the last few months I've noticed that I'm getting requests from members who:

1. Post in a very similar style (which I'm not going to describe here, lest it cause those members and/or their alts to change their habits in order to drop off my radar).
2. Post primarily in the gambling section.
3. Are in gambling-related sig campaigns, sometimes the same one.
4. Sometimes have registration dates close enough that they arouse my suspicions.

I actually went back though my merit history and made a table of some of the above info and used it to judge whether there was something to my suspicions or if they were just me being paranoid.  I came to conclude that there's something fishy going on and therefore I am no longer going to give any merits for posts in the gambling section, since it seems like that's where I might be getting taken advantage of.

The second reason for my decision is that I'm not a gambler and have a hard time judging the value or even the veracity of some posts about gambling.  I can usually tell if someone has put in a decent amount of thought and effort into a post, and I've always given great weight to that when deciding to give out merits, but I think I've been too generous when it comes to gambling posts.  This is going to apply to requests that arrived anywhere in my waiting list, i.e., retroactively.

But that's just me.  I assume there aren't a lot of merits circulating there due to the numerous posts that are mediocre at best and perhaps the fact that not a whole lot of members who post in the gambling section are handing out merits themselves.  Eh.
