3081  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Majority is not Enough: Bitcoin Mining is Vulnerable on: November 05, 2013, 03:16:22 AM
Blocks that are not near a difficulty change will always have the same difficulty.

No, the difficulty of a block is binomially distributed.

The minimum difficulty required for a block to be valid is the thing that stays the same.  Within that 2016-block window the actual difficulty of various blocks varies above that threshold.
It would be less ambiguous if you said, "Successful pools do not build on the first block they hear; they build on the block with the highest work they hear."
3082  Economy / Economics / Re: Mtgox and coinbase price almost identical on: November 05, 2013, 02:46:33 AM
Several hours ago Coinbase was higher. I saw it as much as $5 higher than Mt Gox.

Do you know how coinbase sets its price?
No one does, except Coinbase. They used to set their price based on Bitstamp, but recently they are doing something different.

By the way, this thread probably belongs in Service Discussion or Speculation more than Economics.
3083  Economy / Economics / Re: Mtgox and coinbase price almost identical on: November 05, 2013, 02:44:15 AM
right now it's $239 on gox and about $238 on coinbase.

How did that happen???
Several hours ago Coinbase was higher. I saw it as much as $5 higher than Mt Gox.

From #bitcoin-dev:

[02:22:57] <phantomcircuit> and finally and i suspect most significantly they dont answer the question of what happens when two selfish pools are operating at roughly equivalent hashing rates
[02:22:59] <HaltingState> its ripple's security model Smiley
[02:23:02] <sipa> but we should aim for a system that doesn't need such assumptions to be secure
[02:23:07] <phantomcircuit> i suspect that they both lose out in the end
[02:23:09] <HaltingState> "nobody will ever try attacking the system as it decreases the long term value" <-- ripple ahaha
[02:23:52] ericmuyser [~ericmuyse@173.180.1.169] has quit IRC: Ping timeout: 268 seconds
[02:24:18] <phantomcircuit> sipa, it's the combination of all of them that has the largest impact
[02:24:27] <phantomcircuit> by itself that's not a significant consideration
[02:24:42] <phantomcircuit> but if they tried and only were able to increase their revenues 25%
[02:24:46] <phantomcircuit> well that's just pointless

[02:25:17] <HaltingState> if one mining pool increases revenue against another; does not affect bitcoin; mining is just unfair now, but security is same and does not affect anyone except miners
[02:26:26] <@gmaxwell> phantomcircuit: not just a little more variance, a LOT, this was elu's almost instant comment on the subject.
[02:29:57] <phantomcircuit> gmaxwell, yeah i assumed as much but wasn't sure
[02:30:18] <phantomcircuit> either way it's pretty clear to me that their conclusion is wrong
[02:31:52] <@gmaxwell> phantomcircuit: when successful it makes you get more blocks by orphaning the other guys more, but you get less blocks (because you get orphaned more too) so you don't really enjoy _gains_ until the difficulty drops.

[02:34:41] <phantomcircuit> gmaxwell, ah i hadn't thought of that
[02:34:50] <phantomcircuit> im sure it's much easier to just ddos everybody :/

b) increased transaction rates mean more money spent on overhead, rather than the hashing power that keeps bitcoin secure
Yeah, well there's a huge amount of room for optimization there that currently isn't being done.

Either the transaction rate goes up high enough to pay for all this mining infrastructure or else Bitcoin dies.
3087  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Majority is not Enough: Bitcoin Mining is Vulnerable on: November 05, 2013, 02:01:07 AM
something we may need some time in the future as the profit margins in mining become lower.
Profit margins will go up when the transaction rate gets high enough to generate significant transaction fees compared to the block subsidy.

Today's high of $241 has only been exceeded one other day in history.
3089  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: November 05, 2013, 01:16:48 AM
Yeah, but there's a big difference expanding exponentially within the realm of still-doesn't-matter-much-globally and cracking through to major geo-political influence.
Think about what's been happening geopolitically in the last five years.

This isn't about the rise of Bitcoin as much as it is about the coordinated worldwide collapse of government money.

Large fiat holders around the world are looking for an exit strategy. Every time Bitcoin survives another near death experience, a few more of them decide it's worth taking some risk.

This kind of exponential growth starts off looking like a few people quietly making their way to the exits, and ends up looking like a stampede.

Here's one of my pricing formulas:

Code:
max(max(max(mtgoxUSD,bitstampUSD), USD_24h),USD_24h+(1.5*(max(bitstampUSD,mtgoxUSD)-USD_24h)))*1.06

Remember early this year how we had to endure three months of stopped clocks calling for a crash every day?

It's going to be like that again for a while.
3093  Economy / Speculation / Re: Gold collapsing. Bitcoin UP. on: November 04, 2013, 10:00:19 PM
What's the logic behind your reasoning?
The consistent long-term exponential growth in the exchange rate that's been fairly steady at ~6%/week since 2010.

It's exactly what we'd expect from the beginning stages of the adoption curve of a new technology.

Up in the $10k range if not higher.
I will be incredibly surprised if we don't see $10k before the end of 2015, and not very surprised if we see it sometime in 2014.
3095  Economy / Speculation / Re: Wall Observer BTC/USD - Bitcoin price movement tracking & discussion on: November 04, 2013, 09:36:41 PM
Show me an ATH or reasonable spike which did not end with a crash?
We started posting all time highs from 2013-02-28 onward, and didn't get a crash until 2013-04-10, where the crash bottomed out at 162% of the old ATH.

If we hit $2289 within five weeks of crossing $266, then maybe we should be concerned about a crash back down to $430.

This is what makes it so amusing.  The bears think they are being special butterflies by saying crash! crash! but are really part of the mindless heard themselves.

Whenever we hit ATH
You mean when the USD breaks through its all time low.
3098  Economy / Currency exchange / Re: Looking for a TRUSTED buyer on: November 04, 2013, 07:52:48 PM
Anyone can offer me 200-400 BTC with price around $200 - $220 per BTC.

Thanks.

Payment using PayPal and my debit card.(the money will deduct from my local bank account).
Good luck with that.
3099  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should the Creator of Bitcoin come forward? on: November 04, 2013, 07:30:35 PM
I thought it was relatively well established that of the first 32,000 or so blocks, many must have been Satoshi.
Sure, but that's not premining.

He waited until after publicly announcing the currency and giving other people an opportunity to mine at the same time he started.

Only the Genesis Block could be considered "premined", and that's only 50 BTC.
3100  Economy / Exchanges / Re: MtGox withdrawal delays [Gathering] on: November 04, 2013, 07:17:22 PM
For US residents wanting to cash out USD from Mt Gox - at this moment you can move your BTC to Coinbase and cash out without taking a hit.

I don't know exactly why this happened or how long it will last, but Coinbase prices are currently above Mt Gox prices.
