If it only gives you those options then yeah you only have 1 GPU. As for the 190-200 Mhash/s, that could be better depending on what 6800 series it is. I easily get 310+ Mhash/s out of my 6870. Best drivers for your card are the 11.11 with SDK 2.5. If you have newer than that (11.12/12.1/12.2) then you will see significantly less Mhash/s. I also suggest lowering the memory speed on your card to get temperatures down. Without doing that temps can get pretty hot.
Thank you for the advice. I'm not exactly sure but i think i have the 6850...what tool would i be able to use to see the temperature and tone down the memory speed?

Try this.

http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm

Click on "Download the Lastest MSI Afterburner Beta," the second one down on the far left hand column.

It's an overclocking tool that you can use to adjust your core and memory clock speeds, your voltage, and your fans.  It also lets you monitor the temperature of each card.  Be careful not to overclock your card too much and definitely don't over-volt it if you aren't sure of what you're doing.  Drop the memory clock speeds to around 300 if you can.  Keep your temperatures around 70-75C or lower at all times (lower is much much better).
I haven't tried the beta yet. Is it pretty stable? Also I have a rig that has a 5870 and a 6870 in it and, with the non-beta version I have, I have to adjust my 6870 first then my 5870. If I do it in reverse order my 6870 gets bumped back to stock settings! No clue why but do you think the beta would fix this?

I use the Beta to adjust the memory clocks on my 3x6970 rig.  I usually don't leave the Beta running because I adjust everything else in CGminer.  They're non-reference cards and the manufacturers didn't allow me adjust the clocks that low without flashing the BIOS.  I had to adjust a couple things in the MSIAfterburner.cfg file to get it to let me drop my memory clocks to 685.

It sounds like your problem is a little different than mine was.  The Beta has been stable for me so far.  I haven't noticed anything glitchy.  I'm not sure if it would solve your problem, though.

Good news: I figured out i accidentally set it to CPU power not GPU, but still im only gegtting around 190-200 Mhash. Is that normal? I see people getting way higher results. Thanks

What specific graphics card do you have?  6850?  6870?

https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

Check that out and scroll down until you find your specific graphics card.  It will tell you the average m/hash of a few sample setups.

If you have two graphics cards, I think you need to open another miner tab in GUIminer and select the 2nd graphics card to be able to mine with both cards.

Thanks you. I think it may be possible its not recognizing them because its showing up as [0-0]Barts and the other option i have is my CPU which was the problem initially. Any idea on that maybe? But thank you for the site, i'll definitely compare.

Yeah, the [0-0]Barts is your graphics card.  If you have two, you should be able to go to file (I think it's file) and then something like "new OpenCL miner."  You'll have a 2nd mining tab.  You'll have to enter your miner details again so you can connect to the pool with that miner.  Then select [0-1]Barts in that mining tab.

You might want to mention this story about how bitcoin saved someone from a "crippling injury" :

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=64287.0

I don't see how that has anything to do with bitcoin itself, fun story nevertheless.

I suggest she speaks to Erik Voorhees as well since I've been impressed by his stories and posts. He always is spot-on and explains everything as clear as you'd like it to be. I'm pm'ing her now.

This:

Hello,

I'm a journalist for Reuters, and I'm writing an article about Bitcoins. I plan it to be an introductory piece, explaining to a broad audience what Bitcoins are, how they work, and why they are exciting.

I'm interested in talking to people who use Bitcoins who can explain how they are useful and how they got interested in using them.

I'd love to hear from you - send me a PM if you're interested in helping me out!

Naomi

3167  Economy / Gambling / Ver. #1 Feeling lucky? - "Heads or Tails" Experiment - Need 2 "Contestants" on: February 25, 2012, 02:52:53 AM
I would like to invite you all to a game/experiment that could turn into a write-up worthy quasi-experiment if enough pairs of people want to play.  It's also called "Ver. #1" because I have several ideas for a variation of this experiment/game.  Assuming enough interest is generated, I will attempt to run this game/experiment as often as possible for a minimum of 3 months and a maximum of 6 months to allow for a large enough sample size.

By playing, you agree that you do not have a gambling addiction that is either diagnosed or that you perceive to have.  You give consent that any data collected from this experiment/game may be used for analysis, the results of which could be disseminated to academic institutions or any public.  You agree that your participation is voluntary and that you assume all monetary and psychological risks and/or losses incurred from participating in this experiment.  You also agree that you have understood all rules that are posted below.  You also agree that you may receive a brief follow-up questionnaire via PM which you will be asked to answer and return.

I need two, and only two, players for this risky game.

The rules are as follows, and please read carefully :

On Feb. 29th, 2012 at 7:00 PM U.S. Central Time, I will take a webcam video of myself flipping a (1965) Quarter, at random, at arms length while standing.  The quarter will fall onto a carpeted floor without being caught, though it may bump into something at any point along it's path, and it will land on either "heads" or "tails."  The camera will first record me tossing the coin, then it will record a close up of the face of the coin.  The transition from recording the toss to recording the result will be uncut to demonstrate that the results have not been manipulated in any way.  The resulting video will be posted on YouTube for viewing.

The first contestant (determined according to whoever first posts their interest in playing), should he wish to play, must choose either "heads" or "tails" and declare it first in a post here.  Posting "heads" or "tails" means you have officially placed an entry into this experiment.

The second contestant, should he wish to play, must agree to choose the option that the first contestant did not.  For example, if Player 1 chooses "heads," Player 2 must choose "tails" if he wishes to play.  He will do so by declaring his choice in a post after Player 1.

Both players must choose to participate at least 1 hour prior to 7:00 PM US Central on Feb. 29th.  After two players have agreed to participate, I will post a Bitcoin address to which each player will deposit a certain amount of BTC.  This amount is determined by the following:

At the beginning of the game when Player 1 decides to enter, he will choose the amount of BTC he wishes to wager, selecting any number of BTC (integers only) between 1 and 10.

When Player 2 decides to enter, he must agree on the number of BTC selected by player 1.  For example, if player 1 selects to wager 6 BTC, Player 2 must also wager 6 BTC for a total pot sum of 12 BTC.

THE CATCH:
Player 2 will then be given a choice to "flip" the amount of BTC for each player.   This means that "5 BTC" will become the new, fixed "0" point, and any wager will be flipped numerically to the other side of this fixed point.  For example, if Player 1 originally chooses to wager 2 BTC and Player 2 chooses to "flip," then the new wager becomes 8 BTC for each player for a total pot sum of 16 BTC ( i.e. 5 - 3 = 2 ; 5 + 3 = 8 ).

The final amount wagered should be sent to the posted BTC address at least 30 minutes prior to 7:00 PM US Central on Feb. 29th.

If, and only if, player 2 chooses to execute a "flip,"  then Player 1 will be also be given a choice.  That is, Player 1 will be given the choice to decide whether or not he wishes to reverse his original pick of "heads" or "tails."  For example, if Player 1 originally chose "tails," he will now have the option to choose "heads."  This means that Player 2's pick will also be reversed.

FEES TAKEN FROM POT
20% of the total pot sum (i.e. 20% of the total sum of BTC deposited by both players) will be taken as a fee and will not be awarded to either player regardless of game/experiment outcome.  75% of this fee will be immediately donated to Bitcoin 100 for charity.  The remaining 25% of the fee will be kept by me, the game-maker/experimenter.

For example, if the total pot sum of BTC deposited by both players = 10, then 1.5 BTC will be taken as a fee and donated to Bitcoin 100, and .5 BTC will be taken as a fee and kept by me, the game-maker/researcher.

AWARDED BTC
The player that has correctly guessed "heads" or "tails" according to the results shown in the corresponding video will be awarded the remaining total pot sum (i.e. 80% of the total sum of BTC deposited by both players).  The player that has chosen incorrectly will be awarded nothing and will forfeit their sum of BTC wagered.

EXPERIMENTER-FEE BALANCING INCENTIVE
Players are welcome to participate multiple times, win or lose.  If a player wins 3 consecutive games, he will receive the total sum of fees (in BTC) accumulated by me, the researcher, from previous games.  However, the total sum of fees accumulated by the researcher will be reduced 50% every 7 +/- 2 days (i.e. every 5-9 days), an this reduction will be kept by him permanently.  The remaining half will be left to be taken by the first player to successfully win the game 3 consecutive times.  "Consecutive times" means that a player must win the game 3 times in a row regardless of whether or not another game has taken place that has not involved that player.

***NOTE***
As your participation is voluntary, you may choose to opt out of this game/experiment at any time prior to the designated ending of each game.  For the first game, this means that withdrawing from the game is optional until 7:00 PM US Central Time on Feb. 29th.  After this time, no wagers will be returned to either player, and deposited BTC will be awarded accordingly.  If either player withdraws before the game's end, both wagers will be returned in full.

If any of the aforementioned rules are broken by either player prior to the game's conclusion, that game will be terminated and deposits will be returned in full to both players.

Game 1 begins now; any questions are welcome prior to your entry.  I will not answer any questions asked by any player currently participating in a game unless it is a request to withdraw from the game.  Game 1 terminates at 7:00 p.m. US Central on Feb. 29th.

How can we take an "if" as a premise?

Hypotheticals form unsound arguments.

There's a reason quantum physicists don't bother with hypotheticals.  They're interested in what's observed.  "If a tree falls in the forest and nobody is around to hear it, did it make a sound?"  Answer:  The question is pointless and fails to beget an answer.

You propose only nihilism because arguments at this level must take faith in prior axioms.

However the funny thing is that I am arguing for the lowest skeptical viewpoint possible: the only thing that can be proven to your perception is your own perception. Nothing else can be proved to be observable outside of the realm of self.

I don't propose nihilism at all.  Truth cannot be known through thought or through words.  You cannot abstract it if you want to truly know it.  And, faith is critically important to happiness and is arguably one of the root causes of our ability to survive.  Faith basically boils down to intention.

"What one can know, he cannot prove.  What one can prove, he cannot know."

I've only heard Daniel Dennet speak a few times (never read any of his stuff), and I remember him being unimpressive.

Dennett does not satisfy me either. Basically, he claims that we are essentially tricked into thinking we're conscious.

Here's the deal though - if you found Dennett unsatisfying, then you must read Chalmers.

Honestly, I mostly rely on myself to do the thinking when it comes to these kinds of topics (e.g consciousness, mental vs. physical reality, the Universe, etc).  I studied a ton of Buddhism and a lot of Hinduism, Taoism, and Native American philosophies.  About 8 years of that led me to realize that if I want to truly know about things like consciousness, there is no better person to turn to than my self.  I have a good friend with whom I'll share a lot of my ideas, and I find that voicing my ideas does help me to understand things better.  But, knowing something is much different than trying to represent it abstractly either through thought or through words.

You gotta feel consciousness to know what it is, and to really feel it you must calm your thoughts.  You must remove all preconceptions that you may have had about it.  You need to directly feel and experience consciousness in all it's naked glory.

This is why meditation can help a person find the answers to some of life's hardest questions.

Go figure. TradeHill was just another mybitcoin. Who knew that it was so profitable to go out of business!

You really believe that? I think we're just all caught up in the moment. TradeHill was the first major competitor to MtGox and most of you may not know this, but if it weren't for their help and assistance, Bitinstant wouldnt exist. I owe Jered more then anyone can understand, and we became really good friends from this. He's not to blame at all, they took SO MUCH heat from everyone.

Look, I bet Jered's a great guy.  I even believe that, and I'd go have a beer with him.

But, he is in possession of a lot of other peoples' money and he's trying to find a way to give it all back while making it worth his while.  This has nothing to do with his character.  He just needs to give back everyone's money -- all of it.  This really isn't that complicated.  If he was holding only 1 person's money, I'm sure he'd have no problem and would just give it back.  But, since it's 100's of peoples' money, now he thinks he can skim a bit off the top.

I'm still pretty sure there's something very illegal about this.

Granted, I see your point, and yeh if your even in SF he's an awesome guy to hang out with.

Your assuming he's running the show right now, and that he's the one who's deciding all this. TradeHill is not 1 person, and there are ALOT more facts at play here right now. I'll tell you that Jered wasn't even involved in the fee negotiations, nor the minimums.

My mistake, I shouldn't have said "Jered."  I actually didn't really assume he was the only one deciding it, but I suppose I always did synonymize his name with TradeHill's.

And yes, I'm sure there are probably a lot of other factors that take a lot of TradeHill's time and effort  such as balancing books and all that jazz.  But, I still know what I think the final outcome should look like, and the facts you allude to should only change how this final outcome is reached.

For the record, I only have like $2 in my TradeHill account (maybe $0, I can't recall if I got every single penny out) and I really couldn't care if I got the money back.  But the principle truly disturbs me.

I know you're in a difficult spot playing middle-man.  Please don't mistake any of what I'm saying for irritation towards you.  I friggin' love BitInstant -- your business has helped me make a few hundred $ from arbitrage opportunities Smiley

I think the most fair way is something like 2-5% across the board with no minimum limit.  This way, the small fries can still take out their money.  God forbid people with a lot of cash actually give some of it up (to make it worthwhile for TradeHill).

Originally, I proposed and it was decided for a long time, we were going to have a % rate, like what you said above.

The issue that was raised (I will not name names) was that there may be hundreds of <$50 amounts where the profit would only be a few cents.

For the parties involved, this was unacceptable, thus the current fee structure came to be.

Trust me, Im pissed as well. If you look at one of my earlier posts, I even wanted to do this for free! Even now, we're barely making a profit off this.

Why do you think MtGox decided to cover part of the fee? They know that most of the customers will go to them anyways, but we're all doing this for the good of Bitcoin.

But the thing is this shouldn't be an opportunity for profit.  It's great that BitInstant wants to help and same with Gox, but TradeHill should take absolutely 100% of the fallout from this.  It doesn't matter that hundreds of accounts are less than $50.  Their business model failed, and they should suck it up and eat their losses.  It's a gamble.  If I make a mistake with my money and my investments, I don't ask the Bitcoin community to cover my losses.

"For the parties involved" fails to include the consumer, and it's apparent that the current decision is unacceptable to at least some of us.  This isn't your money, or TradeHill's -- it's our money (property) and it should be us who has the largest influence over this decision.  I've never done business with Gox because of many bad decisions that they've made regarding customer service (mostly a lack of it, and I'm guessing the lack of customer service is there because they simply don't want to hire more people to specifically handle customer service issues).

Starting a business, especially a Bitcoin business, is an extremely risky endeavor, and it should come as no surprise that many Bitcoin businesses will end up failing and losing a lot of money.  That is the risk they took.  I view this as stealing, even with the 2-5% fee structure I suggested.  But, at least that's me trying to be nice and offer a compromise.

With something so important as an exchange wouldn't a note on Bitcointalk.org be beneficial.
Some of the Bitcoin devs run this forum so it should be ok to post some news about an interruption in an exchange service, no?

Something like:
"Our site is experiencing some technical difficulties, we are working to restore service, we apologize for any inconvenience this has caused."

Also, maybe supply an emergency contact that is outside the normal chain, alternative email or other so people don't feel cut off and start to panic.

I think it's more appropriate to have it on the site itself.  It'd be smart to put it here, too, but there are other Bitcoin forums and websites and I don't think it's their job to post it here.
3177  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: [LIVE] Withdraw Your TradeHill Balance Instantly- BitInstant on: February 24, 2012, 03:17:04 AM

Thus, $1000 account gives up $20-$50, approximately that of a wire fee.

A $2 account gives up 4-10 cents.

I used to be a big fan of TradeHill and I talked them up all over this forum.  I always gave them the benefit of the doubt in virtually every circumstance.  But honestly, this $10 flat rate decision is borderline one of the stupidest ideas I've heard on this forum.  I'm not an idiot and it's incredibly easy to see why this is unfair.  TradeHill took a business risk, and unfortunately for them, the banks made it difficult for them.

But, instead of saying "yep, we made a bad business decision and/or we got unlucky,"  they are passing off the trouble to the consumer so that it softens the blow they take.

That's completely unacceptable.  It has nothing to do with how hard they're working.  That's what businesses do -- they fucking work.  But, if things don't pan out the way they planned, they need to bite the bullet, not pass the bullet to us.

Maybe they should sell the Bitcoin.com domain to soften the blow, how about that one?

Why not just use Afterburner?

Edit the MSIAfterburner.cfg

[ATIADLHAL]
EnableUnofficialOverclocking   = 1
UnofficialOverclockingEULA   = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it
UnofficialOverclockingMode   = 2
AccessibilityCheckingPeriod   = 0

And your good to go.

I think you need to do this to the MSIAfterburner.cfg file.

On my 6970s, I wasn't able to go to 685 until I modified this file.
