321  Economy / Economics / Re: Bitcoin in Economics class? on: July 07, 2017, 05:46:04 PM
Maybe the old world fears bitcoin.

Old article, but a good short read:

"Bitcoin Really Is an Existential Threat to the Modern Liberal State"

322  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Why all the coins prices are dropping? on: July 07, 2017, 05:43:09 PM
Looks like general trading to me, stocks and "coins" can't just go up all the time. Unless something big is happening - it is usually kind of a "seesaw" movement.

The overall gains are hanging strong, if you ask me; maybe as we move toward Aug. 1, we sill see some panic moves, but this happens with stocks as well.
323  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Do you take advantage of product REBATES ? on: July 07, 2017, 04:26:46 PM

Looks like a lot of what we buy has a manufacturer rebate, do you submit it or toss it ?

Have you ever not received a rebate ?

324  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Anyone using MSI Z170a PC MATE Motherboard on: July 07, 2017, 04:24:30 PM
I'll post my results...for future reference.
325  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Do you have a fire suppression system ? on: July 07, 2017, 04:19:48 PM

Are you using the stand?

On Amazon, someone mentioned the fireball stand can be mounted on the ceiling or wall, is that correct?

Thanks
326  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Friends coming at me with 40-50k to invest into mining rigs on: July 07, 2017, 03:47:51 PM
A friend wants to get into mining...he knows I use to mine Bitcoin...he has 40-50k to invest into mining rigs.

I told him about the risks...we are meeting later today to talk more about this.

He already has a warehouse...and 50k is not that much to him, but as a business person you never want to lose ANY money.

I think he can make the money back, but it may take 6-12 months; and as you miners know, NOTHING is guaranteed.

What do you think, bad time? Isn't it always a bad time?

Also, what should I charge, I will be doing everything including maintaining the rigs...I was thinking 15-20%.

327  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Until how long will GPU mining last? on: July 07, 2017, 03:39:55 PM
I recently tried setting up another mining rig but found out all the profitable GPUs are no longer available at all local stores in my country. According to the distributors, people have been buying GPUs in BULK since April 2017.

At this rate, can GPU mining still be profitable long term? 1 year from now? 3 years from now?

No one knows...if some coins lose value or switch to PoS, you can move to another coin. From a business standpoint, if you are "in the black"; made your initial investment back and are turning a profit, no matter how small, you are doing okay.

There were some times, early on with bitcoin, when it was cheaper to buy coins on the market then to mine them...
328  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Do Altcoins really have a future? on: July 07, 2017, 02:49:19 PM
There is going to more than one coin in the future, who knows, maybe even 100 or a 1000 coins systems in use.

We are just at the beginning of the evolution (or is it a revolution?).

Do you guys remember how much heat those little eruptors made, I had to put an external fan on them.
330  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Economics of Pre-mining and ICOs on: July 07, 2017, 03:48:49 AM
Although it's clear that many ICO's are meant to raise money for the founders/investors/developers.

I know many of you are against pre-mining and ICO's, but and this is a big BUT; economically would you agree that there has to be "some" coin's available (for circulation) at the start?

Of course "pre-mining" the crap out of a new coin is a clear mistake and looks bad...there needs to be some volume for the marketplace.

I know this is a sensitive issue for many of you, I want to add that isn't about what is fair or not fair, but more about buyers/sellers/traders/marketplace.

Does some "pre-mining" or a limited ICO help "jump start" a new coin/token?
I personally think that some ICOs are good, and for most investors ICOs are a great way to get in on coins that they can later sell for a profit (typically within a relatively short time-frame because of the nature of a lot of these other cryptos), so I don't think that there is any major issue from a use perspective.

Now if someone premines something without people knowing the total extent of premined currency then there is a problem I have, but aside from that there are no issues I can see. It's like Unobtanium where, iirc, only 10 full coins were supposed to exist, and then the market got more than 10, and it was revealed the dev had coins he was using to sell and make a profit on from the high speculative value.

So no "ninja" mining for new coins...I think I remember that story...

332  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Buying GPUs, need an opinion on: July 06, 2017, 10:52:34 PM
Lol, i was confused with the 1080ti's with the other memory.
Yes i know 1070's can do a lot more than 1080's.
But i thought the AMD cards could mine way better and efficient in other coins.. or am i wrong lol

AMD cards are more efficient at certain algorithms, and Nvidia more efficient in others.  They can both mine practically all the same coins that matter though.  When cards were available, the RX470 was the sweet spot for Etherium when it came to price per Megahash.  An nvidia 1070 is the current sweet spot for cards that are available.  A plain 1080 is not a good value at today's prices, and a 1080ti is a powerful card when you put it on the algos that nvidia does best.

Great post, thanks for the info...but I don't know where he is getting the RX 580, that card is impossible to find (esp. at a far price).
333  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: CPU on mining RIG on: July 06, 2017, 04:08:17 AM
no, I use the cheapest g3900, about 30$, works well.

Where did you get the CPU for $30?

334  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Buying a rig Vs Building a rig on: July 05, 2017, 02:39:49 AM
This makes me think of an old saying about the gold rush in America...

Question: Who got rich during the California gold rush?

Answer: The people who sold shovels.

Alright so I've gone to 240v w/ metered PDU l6-20p wall plugs on 30 amps double pole

I need help with the fans, the shed will butt against a wall / hill so I'm thinking attic fans are the best choice here, mount them on the backside slope of the shed?

Thoughts on solar.. .  could it keep up with my usage?
https://www.lowes.com/pd/U-S-Sunlight-1-600-CFM-Black-Galvanized-Steel-Solar-Power-Roof-Vent/50146034

Would be nice to not tie up anymore power

Curious about the solar, how does it rate, can it move enough air?

Anyone try this?

Also, I'm researching now, but a solar powered gable end vent would be nice and easy to install.

336  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Any exchange tradable altcoins using a CPU-only POW presently? on: July 05, 2017, 02:20:02 AM
Preference for coins tradable on Shapeshift, but I'd be willing to look at any other exchange as well...

There is a list in another thread, I think Musicoin was one...
337  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Buying a rig Vs Building a rig on: July 05, 2017, 02:12:53 AM
I'm trying to get into mining Litecoin Ethereum Classic and possibly some Equihash coins.

Should I buy a pre-built rig or have someone build one from scratch?

Build from scratch...because you will save money and you will learn how to do it...you want to learn, so you can build the next one, and the next one, and the next one...

If you aren't ready, or haven't built a computer before, philipma1957 advice is best.

Overall to do well with mining (so you can keep up with technological changes), you have to know your equipment and software inside and out...

Do you think they are talking about bitcoin in your basic ECON class?
