321  Economy / Speculation / Re: Call the Peak Contest/Experiment (1 BTC Prize) on: March 21, 2013, 01:07:47 PM
Rules:

UPDATE:  Contest ends May 31st

To win, post your guess for the peak USD/BTC price.
To win, post your guess before the peak USD/BTC price occurs.
Only a user with 100+ posts can win.
Only the first guess for a user can win.

Winner, with price guess closest to price peak, will receive a 1 BTC prize.

I will use the USD/BTC MTGOX price.
I will determine if you posted before the peak price.
I will determined what is a peak.  I consider these peaks:

When you guess:
Please, I would appreciate any reasoning or let me know if it is a complete guess.  Although, I will not require this in the first experiment to reduce the amount of fake reasoning/guesses given.

Goal:  I hope to run multiple experiments to see if any user(s) can consistently call the peak with some accuracy.  Let me know if I should change any rules for future experiments to better achieve this goal.

322  Bitcoin / Mining / Re: Easy Way to get Free Electricity for mining on: March 21, 2013, 12:58:42 PM
I've never been a big fan of hybrid or electric vehicles. Sure, they use less gasoline, but there are many many hidden environmental costs.

For example, how many chemicals are needed to create those giant batteries that they use? How much more do they cost to make, compared to a subcompact economy car? How long do they last? What is the total carbon footprint? In other words, how much gasoline does it take to make a hybrid car?

If you look at all the inputs and outputs, hybrid cars are basically a con. There is no way that they can ever compete with a Ford Focus or a Chevy Aveo. Heck, a V6 Mercedes Benz Diesel probably has better total life cycle fuel efficiency.

And apparently, the Toyota Prius could even be worse for the environment than the dreaded Hummer.

That's a pretty bold statement... , but putting forward some interesting data:

A Prius has a life span of 100,000 miles.
A Hummer has a life span of 300,000 miles.
Over its lifetime, a Prius costs $3.25 per mile driven.
In contrast, the Hummer costs $1.95 per mile driven, and
The Toyota Scion xB costs $0.48 per mile driven.
The original fuel economy estimates for Hybrids were inflated 30% by the EPA.
One of the Prius's battery factories causes so much environmental damage that NASA uses the lifeless land nearby to simulate moon landings.

324  Bitcoin / Hardware / Re: LEGAL COURSE of ACTION Discussion --- bASIC / BitcoinASIC on: March 14, 2013, 04:19:41 PM
Tom answered me via email again. He states, he will pay me on 22nd. Lets see what happens. Thats the last time I am willed to wait, after that i will pursue legal action.

Tom still owes us $200k, but I know people he paid back > $100k. I believe Tom has the will to refund everybody but I am not sure Tom is in control of what is going on around him :-) Before pursuing legal action we could try to find somebody who would be willing to visit Tom again and who would be accepted by Tom and let them discuss the plan to refund everybody. If there is nobody near Tom we could in fact consider asking a local lawyer to do this for us so we save on the travel costs :-) I am in Europe and I will not travel myself :-)
I am "near" tom

I just got a 5550 in the mail from a friend.

I am trying to get it to mine...

Its NOT working... CGminer crashes... CG miner says its a Hardware issue or a driver issue.

I check with GUIminer and its got issues too... it freezes apon boot.

I remove the catalyst 13.1 drives completly and then I can open GUIminer, so I know its an issue with Cataalyst or something...

anyone have pointers?

Very low hash rate on that GPU, and it's not worth messing with. But if you must torture it, try an older driver version.

How much older? I am a ATi/AMD virgin

CGminer now crashes every time i start it, witrh 2.11.2  Sad
The 2 usual reasons for this are: Mixed versions of different driver files installed, and virus software interfering.

Tested on a machine with no AV, so its gota to be driver issues... any i idea on how I can debug?

Anyone looking to upgrade to the Titan and get rid of their GTX 690 or two GTX 680s?

I have 2 GTX680's

both ASUS Lets talk... I am swapping down to a ATI 5550 because I gave up on gaming.
334  Economy / Computer hardware / Re: [WTB] High-end Gaming-type Video Cards on: March 09, 2013, 05:56:12 AM
Along with bitcoins, one of my other hobbies is sub-zero overclocking of computer components. There is a site which tracks points and submissions with various pieces of hardware (www.hwbot.org). Because of the wide array of hardware out there, I'd like to gather some points for myself. With that said, I thought I would come to you guys for some of the cards I am looking for:

-Reference 7970's (please don't offer abused mining cards) that I could hopefully RMA if need be.
-"Suped up" 7970's, which include, but are not limited to the MSI 7970 Lightning and Asus 7970 Matrix Edition.
-"Suped up" GTX680's, again, include but not limited to EVGA 680 Classified and MSI 680 Lightning.
-"Suped up" GTX580's. For this one, I am only looking for Asus 580 Matrix, or MSI 580 Lightning cards.
-Any cards that you think I might want because they are slightly older gaming graphics cards.

I can pay via Bitcoin or Dwolla, I have a bit of rep on this site (but I haven't made a thread to track it all yet), and I also have a Heatware account here: http://heatware.com/eval.php?id=66694
I am a well established member at quite a few computer forums (the main one being www.overclockers.com/forums where I have almost 8,500 posts).
Feel free to ask questions, offer cards you think I'd be interested in, or just drop in with some information.

Thanks in advance!

EVGA 680 CLASSIFIED OC EDITION. Core clock is stable at ~1.5gzh on air
