321  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A "Bitcoin Dollarization" Exchange? on: August 28, 2012, 08:06:21 PM
You should go to some writing course... Or instead of writing couple of pages the text that nobody is going to read, why not just launch the service and watch customers flooding in? Cheesy

There is definitely a demand for this kind of service. If you have an idea how you could do it and you think it you should be already be implementing it, not writing boring stories on the internet...
322  Other / Politics & Society / Taxes on Bitcoin transactions on: August 28, 2012, 07:55:47 PM
Some of us view bitcoin as demonstrative proof that a decentralized, voluntary and stateless currency is possible.

Your political ideology did not invent Bitcoin, bitcoin is based on computer science and cryptography Cheesy
323  Other / Politics & Society / Taxes on Bitcoin transactions on: August 28, 2012, 06:27:10 PM
Wow, I thought I was a strong libertarian... but this thread is showing me that Im weak... LOL

Nope, you are a communist. True libertardians support privatization of everything, including the air you breathe. Everything else is socialism.

On topic though, I think that it is pretty much impossible to tax capital gains on bitcoins. However there are many other ways to tax bitcoins, and I think goverments will stay here and tax their citizens, even though it will become more difficult. If all else fails, they can just go from house to house with guns and collect the taxes that way Cheesy
324  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: A Strategy to take Bitcoin to the next Level -- and also $1000+ on: August 28, 2012, 02:44:09 PM
I was little disappointed after reading the strategy, basically just saying "keep promoting and developing bitcoin". Thread starter must be a genius Cheesy
325  Economy / Marketplace / Re: BTCST account for sale! on: August 25, 2012, 03:21:08 PM
Pirate is running an affiliate program. He creates new accounts with some imaginary investments in them, and sells these to some greedy forum members, who resell them for profit. Great scheme!

(Disclaimer: the text above was just a joke. I have never invested in pirate fund or any other ponzi scheme, and don't know anything about them. Please don't kill me.)
326  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: August 25, 2012, 12:37:31 PM
countries where the zip code/address system is a little broken Smiley Nice you consider it broken when it does not work the same like where you live but I was also surprised to find out that Chile has no zip codes.

I meant like broken for our site, not for the country Cheesy We have some crappy zip/postal code database, and it works only well in some countries. Going through every country would be too much work at this point. The location picker should work almost everywhere pretty easily.
327  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Paying a dentist using Bitcoins on: August 24, 2012, 05:55:18 PM
In the spot Chief Officer of Finnish central bank stated that it is perfectly legal to use bitcoins. That should improve some confidence Smiley

wow. i would really like to see that clip, even if its in finnish.the word of a head of central bank has some weight.

It was a spokeperson of the finish central bank, not the head. Still impressive !
Here's the link

Well, direct translation would be "chief officer" but maybe it would be more like "chief secretary"... Probably not the head, but important person anyway Smiley
328  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Paying a dentist using Bitcoins on: August 24, 2012, 04:48:41 PM
Bitcoin is evolving pretty well in Finland, Finland is always on the top on google trends etc.

Also recently there was a short TV spot about Bitcoin in Finnish TV. In the spot Chief Officer of Finnish central bank stated that it is perfectly legal to use bitcoins. That should improve some confidence Smiley
329  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: August 24, 2012, 12:14:33 PM
Now you can specify your location from a map. This should be very useful in countries where the zip code/address system is a little broken. It also helps sellers who have specific spot where they are exchanging.
330  Economy / Marketplace / Re: how is it possible to see how much activity and trade silk road has? on: August 24, 2012, 06:59:02 AM
When talking to people whose objection to Bitcoin is illegal activity then Silk Road is only 2% of the Bitcoin  economy.

When talking to people whose objection is that Bitcoin is all speculation and no commerce then Silk Road is 98% of the Bitcoin economy.

LOL.

It should be noted that not all users leave feedback. I have noted that with iPhone/Android apps maybe 1-10% of users leave feedback. Maybe with drugs it is a different thing, but I doubt it...
331  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Bitcoins usage in India on: August 23, 2012, 12:24:40 PM
We made a country listing, which shows that there are some exchangers already in India: https://localbitcoins.com/country/IN

However the locations for India are pretty difficult... We try to improve that soon.

My goal is to build a global bitcoin-related business which employs hundreds if not thousands people  Grin

Am I understading right, fee = 2 satoshis, 0.00000002 BTC?
335  Economy / Service Announcements / Re: [ANN] LocalBitcoins.com - a location-based bitcoin to cash marketplace on: August 20, 2012, 04:50:56 PM
Now country-specific listings: https://localbitcoins.com/country/DE or https://localbitcoins.com/country/US

Al listings also available as RSS feeds: https://localbitcoins.com/country_rss/US

Also the advanced search allows you to filter by price equation and other parameters: https://localbitcoins.com/advanced_search

So you can for example set rss watch for listings in your area, or for listings which are above certain price. I think it is also pretty easy to implement email alerts from RSS feeds etc.
336  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: The original Bitcoin client sucks. on: August 19, 2012, 05:30:08 PM
I don't see any reason why we can't have the best of both worlds.  Why can't the Satoshi client operate as a thin client when it's first installed, and then switch to full client mode in the background when the blockchain becomes up to date?

I disagree. There are other thin clients being developed. Satoshi client should remain a full-fledged stable client, it makes no sense to try to appeal to everyone with it.

I know what you mean, but it's still possible to create a new client based on Satoshi client… Wink

I actually think it makes more sense to build a thin client from scratch than base it on Satoshi client. But of course if you want to implement a thin client, you decide yourself.

I agree. The block chain download is making newbie users hate bitcoin. However there are better alternatives in the pipeline: http://electrum-desktop.com/

And web wallets work pretty well for small amounts IMHO...
339  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs more short-term speculators and a new bitcoinica clone on: August 19, 2012, 10:11:51 AM

That's one of the reasons why ICBIT project was born. It's not for gambling. Futures contracts are more serious instruments and could be used for many things, including speculation on the price movements (for which they suit very well due to their nature - marginal trading, low fees, fast execution, etc).
Furthermore, we plan to add commodities futures too, including oil, gold, and index futures. This would interconnect the Bitcoin market to the fiat-money exchanges (thanks to arbitragers) and hopefully establish a new ecosystem previously absent in the Bitcoin world, reducing volatility.

Whatever it is for, make it easy to understand and easy to use. And my recommendation is that solve one problem properly first, (like speculation in USD/BTC market), and after that start thinking about additional features.
340  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Bitcoin needs more short-term speculators and a new bitcoinica clone on: August 19, 2012, 09:19:10 AM
Have you tried http://www.bitme.com ?
Seems pretty nice and intuitive to me.

Does it work the same way as bitcoinica? Does it offer leverage? Looks like a just normal exchange to me... I started creating an account, but left it because I felt lazy...

(I should note that I'm not the target market (speculator) myself, because I'm pretty sure that I suck at predicting the price movements in the short term. So I leave that gambling to others. However I think there is a dire need for some kind of service which allows it easily to short sell bitcoins.)
