3341  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: Bitcoin/Altcoin Portfolio strategies on: June 02, 2017, 06:31:50 AM
When pursuing a buy-and-hold strategy investing in crytocurrencies, what are the best practices for diversifying among them?
i diversify my money not my bitcoin.
i invest my money in different things and bitcoin is one of them. and when you say buy and hold for cryptocurrencies in general that is not going to work for any of the altcoins.

Quote
Ie.
Own by market cap' weight?
market cap is meaningless for altcoins because they can easily manipulate it by creating a huge amount of supply while not releasing any of it on the market (like ethereum and ripple); so no.

Quote
Own 10% of top ten (by market cap')?
the same, but being on top gives these altcoins a certain kind of higher volume which others don't have and that will slow down any kind of rise and fall. so you can go in with a tiny bit more confidence.

Quote
Own varying percentages of your top 5 favourite projects?
this is not bad, but i personally prefer not owning any altcoin for any long period of times. that is less risky.

Quote
90% Bitcoin, 10% new ICOs?
ICOs in general is a bad idea for investment.
the risks are much higher and the reward is not something to die for.
3342  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / so what happened to MegaUpload 2.0 and its revolution! on: June 02, 2017, 06:20:28 AM
back in 2016 i remember the hype of Megaupload 2.0 and KimDotcom saying
- it will be huge and break the internet, blah blah, revolutionize file sharing
- bitcoin will be $2000 because of it (this happened irregardless Wink)
- start buying now

and all of it was supposed to be released in early 2017 and now we are mid way through the year and i don't see anything anywhere.
so what happened? was it postponed again or did they give up?
i think there was also a crowd funding? run away maybe?
3343  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple thoughts on: June 02, 2017, 06:13:14 AM
It has about 38 million coins in circulation, out of 100 million coins that exist.
that is 38 billion not million, as in with 9 zeros in front of it Grin
the same is for total supply which is 100,000,000,000 coins!

If it is a private, centralized startup, I wonder if it will have success for the long term, since most of the decentralized start up these days have the main advantage of being decentralized, perhaps Ripple can succeed for the first 5 to 10 years? but once the whole population understand the difference between centralize and decentralized probably they will move to the decentralized startups.

Comments?

Ripple has been around for a very long time, and it has not yet succeeded in anything. and i say if you couldn't do it all these years you won't be able to do it in the future too, it will just get harder and harder.

the only chance they got is the centralized sector and banks but they failed there too, because banks just took the idea and used it in their own internal system separate from Ripple.
3344  Economy / Speculation / Re: Should bitcoin price in the system will stabilize at a current rate? on: June 02, 2017, 06:01:44 AM
it wouldn't surprise me to see bitcoin in the 1800-2400 range until late july. after august, all bets are off as to what will happen.

I also think that we can expect price to hold that range, not until late July, it will be more until October, after that who knows what can happen, cause price is staring to move up in this time of the year and that last in beginning of each year.
And in next couple months I don`t see price as stable, fluctuations will always be around, but I think we will hold range that you mentioned, between 1500$ and 2500$ is the price I expect to see until we get to the winter, then all bets are off like you said.

there will be a significant movement around late july or early august due to the impending uasf, i dont see how that can be avoided unless miners activate segwit beforehand, which i doubt will happen. of course, maybe the cluster fucking of forking will be priced in by then too? its bitcoin, its just hard to know amirite? Grin

we can't say anything at all about what will happen by then. BIP148 isn't really something good to support and many core developers don't support it as a matter of fact. and then if you check the Node count supporting it you can see that the percentage is very low and it may very well stay that low until that date and nothing happens! and we move on to another bip i think it is BIP149 or something that has better support and timing.
3345  Other / Meta / Re: Stake your Bitcoin address here on: June 02, 2017, 05:48:47 AM
If he ever loses access to his account, I think theymos or the mods require a pre staked signed message, not just an address.

not really:
Quote
A Bitcoin address or PGP key is associated with the account only if the account posted the key/address, sent it in a PM, or if it is still listed in the account's profile.
source: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0
even your address in your profile counts, you stake it here because someone can quote it and the quote is not easily editable or delete-able if you get hacked.
3346  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: From $25 to about $200. My most challenging Trade so far on: June 01, 2017, 07:12:44 AM
it is good to have targets in life when it comes to money. i have been doing it for a couple of years now. although in trading i can't really say i am setting any kind of targets because of the very unpredictable nature of it and also the fact that (alt least for me) trading takes a lot of time and spending that much time on trading is not possible for me these days although i am mostly missing out on many good pumps.

wow. I am very impressed that you were able to turn 25 into 200. that is a pretty incredible rate of return. What is your strategy if you dont mind me asking?

for bigger markets like bitcoin you need to learn how trading works. the technical analysis is also helpful.
for altcoin trading the best thing to do is to watch the market for pumps and get in before the hype and sell on top.
3347  Economy / Trading Discussion / Re: ARBITRAGE: Bitstamp -> CEX.IO - Proof of Concept on: June 01, 2017, 06:57:43 AM
if you are new to arbitrage know this:
if it was possible someone with more experience would have been doing it already! so the difference wouldn't have existed in first place.

now lets look at the orderbooks.
if you sell ~1BTC the price will drop $10
and if you sell ~2BTC the price will drop $25

and with your 20K deposit assumption you get 8.4BTC
and selling that means price will drop $50

apart from withdrawal fee you will be paying trading fees too.
$20,000 * 0.25% = $50 * 2 = $100
i don't know how much the fiat deposit in bitstamp and withdrawal from cex.io will cost

you need at least $20,100 + as much those two fees cost.
now figure out how much the price should be for you to sell!
(20,100+ double fees) / 8.4
3348  Economy / Speculation / Re: the biggest Forex broker in the world is adding bitcoin, and it is in Japan on: June 01, 2017, 06:36:49 AM
GMO, the biggest Forex broker? Huh

It would be interesting to know where this information comes from. I have almost a decade dedicated to this business and it is very usual for every broker to promote itself as the best or the greatest. By the way it strikes me that this graph only names that GMO broker and does not make clear which other brokers occupy the other spots, besides that being written in Japanese, it seems obvious to me that it is only promoting itself as the biggest one.

On the other hand I do not see this information so relevant. There are many other great brokers who have already implemented bitcoin in their trading and payment options for some time.

well, i am not really into Forex trading so i have no idea about where to really search for a valid data but here i found another news source: http://www.financemagnates.com/forex/brokers/gmo-click-remains-largest-forex-broker-world-2016/

other websites listing Forex brokers seem to be only listing US and Europe Forex brokers and not Asia when it comes to volume. and most of their listings are not based on volume but based on other things such as which one is the best!
3349  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Speculation (Altcoins) / Re: Ethereum Forecast To Surpass Bitcoin By 2018 on: June 01, 2017, 06:26:14 AM
hmm, lets see.
Ripple went up 5600% so maybe that is going to replace bitcoin?
or wait, doge went up 1160% maybe that is even better!
oh noes Steem went up 1244% so that is a better candidate!
that didn't end there.... lets see more
STRAT went up 4874%
BCN 9233%
DGB 5605%

i can keep going if you like Cheesy
3350  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should You be Concerned About a Bitcoin Chain Split on August 1st? on: May 31, 2017, 08:09:17 AM
the reason i am having a hard time accepting how a chain split can work for BIP148 is there are a lot of unknown things that can happen, most of which involves price. and usually i see people mention that "because of economical reasons miners will be forced to switch to BIP148 chain".

but here is what i think will happen (only in case of chain split and low support % of miners):
in the short term:
there will be a lot of panic, and a lot of war. those who are against BIP148, SegWit,... will start dumping on its chain. the same will be about those who are against the legacy chain who will dump on the other chain/market on exchanges. => price drop on both sides.
there will a lot of FUD, like the FUD that caused the drop from $250 to $888 a couple of months ago. => even bigger drop
panic sells => even bigger drop
there is no economical advantage that works as incentive for any miner to switch!

bitcoin is not ethereum to have a foundation controlling 75% of the coins to only dump on the chain they don't want (aka ETC) to keep its price down while pumping their own chain. bitcoin is distributed well among people supporting different things and lots of whales on both sides, miners included. => even more drops.

and as for SegWit and LN benefits (long term):
what if legacy chain (non-BIP148) activated SegWit too?
lets say after BIP148 chain split, the war happened and price tanked hard, the legacy chain went ahead with the big hashrate and activated SegWit finally. with some proposal like The Barry Silbert with >80% miners support!
in that case BIP148 chain won't have any advantage anymore! it will be a chain with low hashrate, for bitcoin that has took a big hit because we rushed to force a chain split just to activate SegWit faster.
again there is no economical advantage that works as incentive for any miner to switch!
3351  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should You be Concerned About a Bitcoin Chain Split on August 1st? on: May 31, 2017, 07:12:57 AM
Also would the price of each of them be the same?

we can't say for sure, but if a chain split happens for any reason, be it UASF or BU or anything else, there is a high chance of the total price be much less than current price.

It makes sense, as they'd protect the value of BTC on the exchanges far better this way, by making a minority Segwit chain the majority chain, forcing the minority legacy chain miners to accept the new chain (BIP148 strangles non-BIP148 supporting block solutions at birth, the anti-Segwit miners really would have no choice Cool).

can you explain this better, i never understood how this is going to work.
both chains will have nodes, hashrate, value, a place to trade them (exchanges will list both happily because they will earn twice the fee)!
then how does BIP148 going to force any non-BIP148 to do anything else
3352  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Should You be Concerned About a Bitcoin Chain Split on August 1st? on: May 31, 2017, 06:40:41 AM
yes you should.
and the best thing to do is to to move your coins to a cold storage and not touch them until the fate of the chains are decided. we can not possibly know which chain will survive and becomes bitcoin. and it can take a while!

although i am a big fan of any kind of UASF, but sadly it seems like the community is so hyped up about the idea that it is forgetting about the high risks it has.

3. USAF lacks community support,

not sure how much this part is true though. the node count shows an increasing rate of nodes showing their support for it.
3353  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Any way to have cheap transactions now? on: May 31, 2017, 06:22:37 AM
if the exchange platform is really taking 10,000 satoshi fee then continue using that as your wallet for small amounts, there are other exchanges that do this too. bittrex and c-cex both take 20,000 satoshi last time i checked but know that using a third party no matter if it is a wallet or an exchange will have risks, they can block your account, they can run away, you can get hacked ,...

also change your "typical" transaction and the highest fees that you have to pay will drop down to 75,000 satoshi instead of what you have been experiencing. that means stop reusing addresses and receiving a log of small transactions.
226 byte * 330 s/b = 74,580 satoshi
3354  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: The end of Pumping Season... on: May 31, 2017, 06:15:07 AM
Not sure the pumping season is over yet.  ...

the pumping season means a large number of altcoins get pumped all together, at the same time in a short period of time. like we have been seeing in the past 2 or 3 months, when at least 20 or so altcoins were rising alongside each other and each of them go up at least 100% and we have seen 6000% too!

however it doesn't mean pumping will end!
altcoin pumps will always continue, that is why you see pumps are still happening and will continue happening through the year.
3355  Economy / Speculation / the biggest Forex broker in the world added bitcoin, and it is in Japan on: May 31, 2017, 06:07:19 AM
GMO Click Securities' Annual FX Trading Volume is No.1 Worldwide in 2016 for the 5th Consecutive Year Since 2012

now this Japanese internet giant called GMO Internet Group is going to start their full scale bitcoin trading platform very soon. and it is expected to become very popular very fast in Japan.

how do you think this is going to affect the whole market?
the price is just one of them, we have seen the effects Japan had, what other effects do you think they will have, for example do you think this will change things for ETF's in US, how about regulations in other countries and their Forex brokers adding bitcoin on this scale?

edit:
It is open now: https://coin.z.com/jp/index.html
and already meeting a large demand for bitcoin

GMO Click Securities (the company) has estimates that the market size in Japan for cryptocurrencies will grow to 1 trillion yen daily volume, or US$8.7 billion daily within a few years.

Quote
Z.com Coin is offering two types of account plans for users, referred to as “Simple” and “Full Access.” With Simple, the website doesn’t ask for much identifying information, so customers can get set up quickly. However, they can only treat the exchange as a cryptocurrency wallet where they can buy coins, make deposits, and withdraw them again.

The Full Access accounts require Know Your Customer (KYC) and Anti Money Laundering (AML) documentation, but permits users to deposit and withdraw Japanese yen, and trade on both of Z.com Coin’s trading services.

The company is initially offering a Bitcoin wallet and two markets for their customer to trade. The first is a Foreign Exchange market that allows Bitcoin to be traded for various fiat currencies, called the “virtual currency FX” market. Traders also have access to margin trading, an already-very popular market type for Z.com, according to the announcement.

The other market is a more traditional Bitcoin exchange, which they simply call their “virtual currency” market. The service allows anyone to buy bitcoins for Yen, and potentially other cryptocurrencies like Ethereum in the future, and send them to their Z.com coin wallet. As with the now competing exchange BitFlyer, trading fees on the Virtual Currency market are zero.

3356  Bitcoin / Bitcoin Discussion / Re: Manually setting Fee vs Not on: May 31, 2017, 05:46:44 AM
it is all about if the wallet is well designed or not. it is just a code, and if that code is determining the amount of fee for you then you don't have to worry about anything, just send the amounts and trust the wallet does the rest for you.
otherwise if the wallet's fee suggestion code is bad, like blockchain.info for example then you must set it yourself. there is no other way around it.

there is always going to be pros and cons for both approaches though. if you are relying on automatic fee setting then there is a risk of setting higher or lower fee.
if you do it manually, there is a lot of work for checking a source that is giving you a good fee estimation, the 21.co site gives bad suggestions sometimes, and then setting it without any human errors.
3357  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Btc or Ltc? on: May 30, 2017, 06:30:06 AM
Im lookin for a long-term investment and have 1000$.
I cant decide if btc or ltc is better?
What would you choose?

if you open a chart and look at the whole history i think you can easily get your answer for long term investment.
where bitcoin is always rising up in long term, gaining more than double its value annually, altcoins only rise up for short period of time and then go downwards for the rest of the year until their next pumping phase comes up and they rise again.

so my suggestion is investing in bitcoin for long term and investing in litecoin for short. although some coins that are big and popular such as LTC are a bit different and short term in their cases doesn't necessarily have to be very short such as a week to a month as it is with other altcoins.
3358  Economy / Web Wallets / Re: Large blockchain.info transaction stuck going on 9 days on: May 30, 2017, 06:09:25 AM
try using a different wallet that gives you a better fee estimation (give electrum a try). and also you can always check out this website: http://bitcoinfees.21.co/ for more information on fees.
you fee was really low since the appropriate fee should have been around 300 satoshi/byte and you had 88.

it was mostly luck that lead to the confirmation of your transaction but also the fact that in the past few days, despite the still large number of transactions in mempool, the fees have come down and that shows the fact that most of those transactions have very low amount of fee.
3359  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: Ripple - Alt Coins Trading on: May 30, 2017, 06:03:42 AM
there is a summary:
- XRP was pumped massively (5600%) in the past 2 months+ and reached 24,351 satoshi
- it has already lost most of the pump and it is back at 10,000 satoshi

this can mean two things, the bubble has busted and how it is at a low price making it a good entry point for the next possible come back even if it is small. (i say the chance of it is low)
or the whales are waiting for some more buy orders to be placed and then dump on them for a bigger profit than dumping now and going much lower.

since the 10,000 satoshi is having a hard time keeping itself up (it is already broken and price is 9900) i'd say there isn't much buy support and investing now is not such a good idea.
3360  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Service Discussion (Altcoins) / Re: Which exchange is best? on: May 30, 2017, 05:56:25 AM
can't say best but cex io is easy one, as you can do deposit by cards, instant buying, also can sell higher price compare to other exchanges

i have only used cex.io for bitcoin/some of the altcoins trading in a long time ago. but i have heard their fiat deposit/withdrawal fees are very high which makes it not such a good idea to use an exchange platform while others exist with lower fees.
and that actually explains their higher price too.
