+1 for Dwolla withdrawal!

On a side note, Cryptoxchange took about a good half-hour to an hour to deal with a mistake that I made where I accidentally banned myself from withdrawing anything on my account for 24 hours.  I was trying to withdraw quickly because of the margin between Gox and Crypto at the time.  Even though it was my fault, they responded to my email VERY quickly, unlocked the ban, and let me proceed with my withdrawal.

+1 for Cryptoxchange and their amazing first impression of customer service.

Give cryptoxchange a try

+1  for Cryptoxchange.

I've seen more than a few complaints about people suddenly losing immediate access to their money at Gox due to "suspicious activity."

All by itself, the clock does not influence the longevity in any way.

However, power consumption and dissipation rise linearly along with clock speed and those two factors are the chip killers when the microscopically small traces inside the chip "burn up" (actually, it's electromigration that kills them - a process where electric current displaces molecules of the conductor it's running through).

Load (heat and current) also leads to degradation of transistors inside the chip to the point where they become unstable at speeds they used to run at without any issues. If your card suddenly starts crashing where it used to run stably for months dropping the clocks is the only solution.

95% fan speed (or even 85%) is something you should worry about. When manufacturers cut corners, fan quality goes first.

Chances are that when purchasing inexpensive 10$ case fans you are getting much higher quality devices than the ones mounted on your 300$ card...

70..79°C is not a bad temperature range for a battery of overclocked 6970s locked in a PC case. If it's an open rig, try increasing the distance between cards or pointing more airflow directly at them.

It's a bloody damned shame that your manufturer seems to have cheaped out on the VRMs - undervolting should drop the temperatures just enough for you to be able to reduce the fan speed to sane levels.

TL;DR:
(1) && (2) No clock - all by itself - is too high provided the card is stable. 79°C isn't exactly low but it'll do.
(3) Yes.
(4) Independent of current and temperature, no.

Thanks for the input.

The voltage is strange on the 6970s -- I can't adjust voltage on any of the cards, but one is at 1.150 and the other two are at 1.175.  Go figure.

They are all locked in the case but I'm likely going to open the case and direct a desktop fan towards it.
3364  Bitcoin / Mining support / Looking for 2nd opinions on: February 04, 2012, 08:54:37 PM
I'm looking for some second opinions about the longevity of my setup.

I have 3x6970 in one rig and another 1x5870 hashing away.

Current settings using cgminer on the 6970s are:
950/685 (mem is lowest I can get without flashing BIOS)
V=1.175 (can't adjust in cgminer or afterburner)
I = 9
Fan = 85% on 2 cards, 95% on the hottest card
Temp = 79C on Hottest card, 70C on coolest.
Powertune = 10
@ 425 m/hash each

Current settings using cgminer on the 5870 are:
980/350
V = 1.130
I=9
Fan = 40%
Temp = 53C
Powertune = 0 (Can't adjust for this card on cgminer)
@405 m/hash

My questions:
1)  Is 950 core or 79C too much/high for the 6970?
2)  Is 980 core (stock 850) too high for the 5870?
3)  Are the fan speeds on the 6970s an issue?  They are HIS 6970s.
4)  Most importantly, does an increased core clock affect the longevity of a card independent of temperature and voltage?  I assume 53C and 40% fan to be no concern, but does a +130mhz overclock present a problem for longevity in and of itself?

I'd really not like my card warranties to be voided because I leave some burns somewhere or something.

Cypher, I read the thread you linked, but how do I modify it?  It's .cfg and doesn't open like notepad.

right click on it, choose edit in Notepad, enter mods, then save.

I right clicked, went properties --> open with notepad --> adjusted "unofficialoverclockingmode =   2"  (was previously zero) -->  save (I have 'hide file extensions' unchecked)  and then opened MSI Afterburner.

It didn't work.  Where'd I go wrong?

Edit:  By "didn't work,"  I mean MSI Afterburner works but underclocking the memory does not.

Edit 2:  I might not have the Beta version.  When I downloaded to begin with, I clicked the top link on the left on this page:  http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/download.htm  and not the link below it (i.e. I clicked on 'Download MSI Afterburner" and not "Download the Latest Afterburner Beta."

did you put this part in?:

UnofficialOverclockingEULA   = I confirm that I am aware of unofficial overclocking limitations and fully understand that MSI will not provide me any support on it

No, I didn't, but I fixed it Smiley

I just downloaded the Beta version and switched "unofficialoverclockingmode" to =2.   Fired it up and now I got 685 mem clock Smiley

Now I'm averaging 410 413 m/hash on all 3 cards with 920/685, powertune +10, fan 90% on all 3 cards, intensity = 9, hottest card at 77C, coolest card at 67C

Thanks!
Not bad Smiley

413?  grrrrrr.

what voltage do you have it set at and what exact 6970's do u have?

The voltage is weird.  On card 0, the voltage is locked at 1.150, but on cards 1 and 2 the voltage is at 1.175.  I can't adjust the voltage on any of them still, even with Afterburner Beta.

They are all HIS Radeon 6970s

NP Cypherdoc.
Remember that the flashing utility will require admin rights and be sure to start with creating a backup of your old bios.
Best of luck.

thanks to you guys i'm now pulling 400 Mh/s per card Cheesy

Hey cyperdoc, may seem like a dumb question, but how did you back-up you old bios?  In what folder are they located?

Also, after downloading the flash utility, what exactly happens?

I guess what I really want to know is this:  What steps did you take from the moment you downloaded the flash utility to when you were able to successfully lower your mem clock to below a -125 differential?

The reason I'm asking is because it's a very expensive computer and I want to make sure I don't jack something up through trial and error.

hey joint; you and i are in the same boat.  i haven't done it yet cuz like you the links aren't quite clear.  luckily i'm getting that 400 Mh/s w/o the flash.

That's right where I'm at...400 Mh/s a card at 890/765 with +3 powertune, 95% fan with the hottest card sitting at right around 79C.  I' feel much better if my hottest card was at 70C, or if I could at least drop my fan below 70%.  Sucks not being able to adjust the voltage either.

hmmm.  i use 950/850,  powertune +20 for both my machines.  the one with 3 Sapphires (2 very close) in a case turned on its side with cards vertical with the side panel off and an external fan keeps the temps @70C.  the other machine has 2 Powercolors with good separation with the side panel off with temps @79.5 and 73.5C

Damn, by your numbers I would think you'd be getting way more m/hash than I am.  +20 powertune?  Is that OK for a card?

hey joint, made some progress.

downloaded MSI Afterburner beta and adjusted to 967/685 and it boosted me to 403-405 Mh/s.  left voltage at 1174 but could change it if i wanted.  any suggestions as to what level might help?

i modified the .cfg file for more underclocking but it didn't allow me to drop to 340  Angry

slowly but surely.

Cypherdoc, I did a little more tweaking.  Bumped my clocks up to 920/795 with 5% powertune and I'm pulling around 405 mh/s also.  I must not have the right MSI Afterburner version because it won't allow me to voltage tweak and it won't let me bypass the -125 mem-diff.  What is the link to the Afterburner version you used?

Also, I tried messing with the intensity briefly but I didn't leave the adjustments on long enough to average it out -- I currently have intensity set at 9.  When I crank the intensity to 14 on cgminer, It shows around 410-415 m/hash, but I'm not sure if my efficiency is dropping.  I'll try leaving a single card at 14 overnight and see what happens.
3371  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Cash out or keep bitcoins? on: February 02, 2012, 05:42:44 AM
In my opinion, cashing out has it's merits.

I look at it as "locking in" my profits, or locking in at a price.

Suppose you buy at $5.50 and the price goes to $6.  In this market, one rich man's decision can cause that price to fall just as fast as it rose.  Holding could mean losing an opportunity for a profit that you have evidence for in the present moment.

I often cash out at times like these to "lock in" my profit.  If the price continues to climb, I can still hop back on board and lose out on the transaction fees.  The hardest part about this is knowing when it is, in fact, continuing to climb.

Nonetheless, while I'm disappointed that I've missed some good climbs that occurred after cashing out (hindsight is always 20/20), I'll tell you one thing: It always hurts less to miss out on a climb than to miss the right time to sell.

Maybe it's in the wrong place, but there are 4000 cheap coin sitting for an hour+ that could be plundered.

Yep, maybe I posted in the wrong place.  My bad.  But yeh, the coins are STILL sitting there waiting to be bought and my Dwolla money is apparently useless at the moment.  I was about to send a few G's.

What gives?  I sent money from Dwolla to my Cryptoxchange account through Bitinstant about a week ago.  I don't see any notifications on the site saying this option is down, but I can't select Cryptoxchange from the drop-down menu of exchange destinations.  The price is like $5.50 there right now!

Ok, I got it to work.  But how do I flash my BIOS to allow for 300 mem clock?  I have 3 x 6970.  Lowest it's letting me get is around 770 mem.  Also, I can't adjust the voltage.

If I could offer up 1 more small, but hopefully relevant piece of advise ? (no charge....unless you think it's worth something...lol)

Ditch GUIMiner and get on the CGMiner train.

I use it on all my Win7 x64 machines and it rocks. It has the ability to use a config file, but I still find it easier to launch it from a BAT file.

1- Create a new TXT file in Windows.

2- Paste in the following (change where needed)

Quote
start /affinity 1 cgminer -o http://YOURPOOL.COM:8332 -u YOURUSERNAME -p YOURPASSWORD -I 9 --gpu-engine XXX --gpu-memclock 300 --auto-fan --temp-target 69

3- Close TXT File, SAVE, RENAME the file something.BAT (have 'hide known file extensions' disabled, or it will remain a TXT file, regardless of extension)

4- Right-Click the BAT file, choose EDIT (opens in Notepad), Make the required changes, adding your POOL, USERNAME, PASSWORD, GPU Clock Speed (replace XXX). CLOSE/SAVE

5- DOWNLOAD the latest CGMiner (2.1.2) for Win32 (no x64 version, doesn't matter, runs fine). Unzip it anywhere you like.
Thread - https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=28402.0  .........  Direct Download Link (From Developer) - http://ck.kolivas.org/apps/cgminer/cgminer-2.1.2-win32.zip

6- CUT/PASTE the something.BAT file into your CGMiner directory and Double-Click it.....VOILA!

The above CMD is set to run MEM @ 300Mhz and your Target Temp with Auto Fan control at 69C, but these values can be changed also.
Regardless of whatever driver, the CMD is also set to run on a single CPU core, rather than 100%, or all 4 cores of your Quad Core, if that's what you have (affinity = quick fix for 100% CPU Bug).

This will automatically control all 3 of your cards and give you 2 mining threads per card (default setting). Once you get your 'feet wet' with it, you can explore more options.
What I provided above is a basic (pretty much what I use exactly) setup for most of my cards, including my quad 6950 Miners (using I=9 Intensity as above).

Give it a try....you WON'T be dissapointed.

CGMiner replaces Overclocking Software, Fan Control and Miner - ALL IN ONE Wink

So I tried installing CGminer on my laptop first before I try it on my mining rigs.  Two questions:

1.)  Is it natural that my computer is trying to tell me that CGminer is a trojan horse?
2.)  When I click on the something.BAT file, why does it open a command prompt that immediately closes?
3379  Bitcoin / Development & Technical Discussion / Re: Deadlines and moving forward (BIP 16/17 support) on: January 31, 2012, 03:56:25 AM
So, what happens if the developers make up their minds and choose one option over the other and 500,000 Bitcoin users who aren't even aware of the change fail to upgrade their clients?

That could only be a problem in the event that <50% of the mining power upgrades. This is nearly impossible because miners know that they will eventually lose when fighting against the development group. The percentage of clients ignoring the disagreeing miners' blocks will grow forever because everyone downloads the client from bitcoin.org. The development group could also send out alerts and get like 95% of users to upgrade in days, though this will probably not be necessary.

I can only see "turbulence" happening if the largest pool ops totally disregard their profitability in order to fight against the new rules. Hopefully no proposal bad enough to elicit this response would make it through the process.

I had no idea about the alert system.  Thanks!

Step 1:  Create a Bitcoin card that swipes like a credit card.

...

Step 6:  Voila!  You now have a credit card POS machine that all merchants are already familiar with, but it will also work with Bitcoins.

Voila! You just gave your private key to the merchant so they can rob you blind at their leisure.

But I'm sure you're quite comfortable handing your credit card to a waiter or waitress and watching them walk the fuck away with it tucked securely in his/her little black book.
