341  Other / Meta / Re: Activity & new membergroup limits on: June 20, 2013, 04:13:53 PM
The simple explaination is that no matter how much you post, activity can only increase by an average of 1 per day at most.

Actually slightly more than that.  I've been here for 360 days, but have an activity of 378

This might have just been due to the implementation of the new system with old accounts. I've noticed everyone's activity is a multiple of 14 but I doubt we've all posted an average of at least once a day for each two week period.
342  Other / Meta / Re: Activity & new membergroup limits on: June 20, 2013, 03:02:56 PM
I'm really confused about how this works...
activity = min(time * 14, posts)

I was never good at algebra...

As far as my understanding goes it checks how much you log in during two week periods. The activity meter can not go past the amount of posts you have.

It also won't give you more than 14 activity "points" for a two week period.
343  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: how did you get your first bitcoin ? on: June 20, 2013, 03:01:29 PM
Well, the first time I bought back in 2011 I purchased 3,000 coins Smiley I remember I bought off MTGOX because that was like the only btc exchange back then.

I bought several using PayPal back in 2011 before everyone started having issues. In three transactions, I bought almost 100 at around $1 each but I gambled most of them away.  Cry

Over the last two years, I've earned and spent thousands but my BTC wallet is still eerily similar to my USD wallet: almost empty.
344  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: completely confused on: June 20, 2013, 02:43:55 PM

1.  You can wire transfer into your wallet a fiat currency which translates to bitcoins? or that just gives me (e.g. USD) in my wallet to go and purchase bitcoins from someone that already has them?

2.  Can you transfer into wallet with any currency? pesos, bolivar, etc...?  Can you transfer out any currency? pesos, bolivar, etc...?

If you're referring to the wallet created by the bitcoin client you downloaded onto your personal computer, then no, you can't transfer anything into it other than bitcoins. If you have an online account (eWallet) with a third party like an exchange site, they may let you wire certain types of funds. Many of them are currently having legal and regulatory problems due to increased paranoia by their banking institutions and have discontinued this service.

3.  I read that the bitcoin is "volatile" and I shouldn't keep money in there for a long time.  What does that mean?

The rate of exchange can vary greatly from day to day. Several weeks ago it held at around $120 per bitcoin for quite a while and then it fell to less than $100 per bitcoin. Over the last few days, it has slowly climbed back up and is around $110 per bitcoin as I write this. No one can guarantee the value you might get for your bitcoins when or if you decide to exchange them.

4.  The only real way to get bitcoins is to earn them or buy them or trade for them, right?  I understand how to earn them from different websites.  But to buy them is really only by having wired money into my wallet so I can purchase them from someone who is selling (as opposed to buying from "bank" or "casa de cambio" or "exchange house", right?

Mining is possible but not profitable at the moment unless you have access to cheap (free) electricity and/or specialized mining equipment (ASICs).

You don't have to wire money anywhere if you can find a person willing to trade with you in person. Try https://localbitcoins.com/

As far as I know, there isn't a casa de cambio in Cuba (or anywhere else) currently trading bitcoins.  Cheesy

Updated the Charities page at bitcoin100.org to reflect those under consideration.

I did a quick review of each of organizations above and thought they all looked like they are doing some good and fit the requirements for Bitcoin 100.  However, I wasn't able to find any mention of bitcoin acceptance with Hiphopchessfederation.  Maybe if I filled out their form and went to the next page...or spent a few more minutes looking for it?

I believe Rassah mentioned some are still working at getting the Bitcon donation option on their sites.

It was great to meet both of you, Rassah and Edd, at the conference.  Thanks for the time and work you guys put into this.

Great to meet you, too! Hopefully, your sons will be able to make the next conference.

It's a direct quote from the page you linked to.

That's not a wordpress plugin. It doesn't even have the same functionality.

[...]OK here we go again.

Until you sell your bitcoins there is no tax to pay.

If you want to be a law abiding Joe and pay taxes when you legally don't even owe them any tax then fine.

Like any commodity you only pay when you convert the commodity to a FIAT currency. That is the law whatever way you want to play it.
You're 100% right Grin

Before getting all sarcastic you should read the link you posted.

I can not fathom how a plumber exchanging services with someone has any relevance to a commodity.

Please explain how that is the case.

Also if the services traded are of equal value there is no net gain - therefore no profit. Business only pay tax on profit. Which bit of this do you not understand.

It is no wonder the IRS can mug off loads of people when they do not understand even the most basic elements of running a business.

Yes, you really should have read the link before you posted it.

What makes you think charities will accept the latest in a extremely long and questionable list of alt-coins when

  • Its value is zero
  • They need to understand and download a client they've never heard of
  • It's taken Bitcoin100 a year and a half to get a handful of charities to accept $1000 in the form of bitcoins

If I post 1 message per fortnight for the next year, I'll get hero. That incentive to contribute.

Uh ... no.

1 post every 14 days would be + 1 activity every 14 days.   So in a year you would have +26 activity.

If you post 14 times per 14 days then yes you will be a "hero" in a year.  Then again if you are still around regularly posting week after week for a year doesn't it make sense that you should be.   You haven't gamed anything.

This. You've successfully 'gamed' the system by being rewarded for exactly what Hero Members are supposed to be rewarded for.

Bitcoins can be earned by providing goods or services in exchange. These "goods" can include more traditional currencies like dollars or pesos.

Most bitcoiners use the current or weighted rate of exchange at one of the larger trading sites (Mt. Gox, BTC-E, etc) when determining the value of their bitcoins. If you want $1000 worth of BTC, simply divide it by the rate. For example, at BTC-E, $1000 will get you 9.49667616 BTC right now.

If you wish to trade your bitcoins for fiat, reverse the process. LocalBitcoins.com is a popular site for finding BTC buyers and sellers near you.

5.  I downloaded bitcoin-qt and i am out of sync it says.

It will take a while for it to sync. The blockchain is quite large at this point.

354  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Is it legal to give bitcoins as a gift? on: June 19, 2013, 04:46:03 PM
In both your banana scenario and my t-shirt scenario, the bitcoin seller is trying to disguise the fact that he is actually exchanging bitcoins for fiat. Any auditor that can demonstrate this to a reasonable degree would be able to hold you to any rules and/or regulations that then apply.

What they do to you in regards to fines and imprisonment probably depends on how egregious the offense is.
355  Bitcoin / Legal / Re: Is it legal to give bitcoins as a gift? on: June 19, 2013, 03:28:19 PM
Bitcoin will make for some very interesting cases, I'm sure. I know of at least one person who is selling a product and allowing customers to overpay in fiat. He then sends the overpaying customer a "refund" in BTC. I'm confident this practice won't fly if it ever comes under investigation but consider another, hypothetical situation:

Instead of bananas, I start selling custom printed t-shirts. Each shirt has a unique QR code printed on the front that, when scanned, reveals a private key to a funded BTC address. I can charge more than one would usually pay for a t-shirt because each one is unique, see.

If I wanted to really be sneaky, I could send two shirts to each customer. One has the QR code the buyer specified upon ordering (a random message, a URL, etc.) and the other has the private key QR code (How did that get in there? My cousin must have accidentally packed a personal shirt of mine! Darn my nepotistic hiring practices. I guess I'll never learn.  Wink ).

Got this in private PM:

The non-profit I was talking about is rockzipfel: http://www.rockzipfel-leipzig.de/ . It's definitely non-religious and non-political. The idea is rather unique: They make it possible for parents to stay close to their small children while working and foster community at the same time. You go there and find everything you need in an office and your kids get looked after by volunteers from all over the world. I have been going there with my little daughter for about half a year now. In fact I am working there now Wink

They have been featured in quite a lot of national media and won family friendlyness prizes and EU funding. They are a tax-deductible common-good non-profit in Germany and $1000 would make quite an impact there. Do you think they would be eligible?

Feedback please?

Very interesting idea. It seems almost like intermediary help for families transitioning from dire straits to a more comfortable situation. I say they qualify.

I trade a lot and so its vitally important. And although the trust system should be what is used by buyers, 100% its not. Every time I get "I see you're a hero member, I trust you", NOT because I have +250 risked in trust. No buyer actually cares about trust at the moment.

All this does is give the old members doing escrow more money.

You realize you were basically "gaming" the system, right? You registered less than 3 months ago and yet, because of your post count, you earned a Hero tag and newbies were placing more confidence in you than they should have.

The new system may not be the best idea but your arguments are hurting your case more than helping it.

Was the trust right? Yes. Have I scammed anyone? No.

As I've said 10x already, carpet bombing is not a solution.

Does having a Hero status make someone more trustworthy? No.

Did I say you were untrustworthy simply because you've only been here three months? No.

As I said, your arguments are hurting your case more than helping it.

For someone doing charitable work and new to AI research I'd start with this page on their web site:

http://intelligence.org/2013/06/05/friendly-ai-research-as-effective-altruism/

The TED talk and links at the top page are vital reading for anyone involved in good works, regardless of their opinions on AI safety research.

I'll be happy to answer more questions as best I can, but please note I don't work for or represent MIRI.

I think the issue is that not everyone would agree that potential problems and actual problems deserve equal resources.

I log in religiously every day; I spend most evenings dipping in and out of reading here and always have a tab open.

I seem to post in bursts, either when something interests me or I have some transaction to arrange.

That sounds a lot like me.
