?

He invested $4000 into btc since last year and is still holding. I don't see how has he lost $50k? Looks like an attention grabbing headline to sell his data recovery service.

i dont blame the bot commanders. i blame the idiots that let their computers turn into virus laden festering bots.

What, like your grandma? (not a personal attack, but you get the idea)

It's not their fault they go into some big store and are sold a pup that runs windows in admin mode with Java, flash enabled, by some grinning salesperson that assures them their 'Norton' will keep them safe. My opinion is that the people who make the computer distros, and the people who sell them, should be providing more secure devices. But where's the incentive? That's where the blame and pressure should be going. Things have been getting better on this front and I suspect once all the windows XP and Vista computers have been retired this problem will seriously diminish.

Your argument suggests that if you don't have a CS degree you shouldn't be using a computer though.

do I have to spell out the whole thing?

Pretty much, yes. Thankyou for your patience Wink
364  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [8500 GH/s] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + UserDiff; ASIC tested on: April 17, 2013, 12:45:06 PM
strange.... At the same time slush's pool started getting DDOSed again My pool and some other pools are getting DDOSed again.

It seems that this DDOS on many pools are done by the same botnet operator that is attacking slush.

Could this be an all out attack? Is it wise to start solo mining for a while to spread the targets?
365  Bitcoin / Pools / Re: [8500 GH/s] Slush's Pool (mining.bitcoin.cz); TX FEES + UserDiff; ASIC tested on: April 17, 2013, 12:37:29 PM
Ouch, it seems down again  Undecided

edit : connection interrupted at 12:23:06 UTC

I say we get IP address information on the botnet and execute take-downs of the servers by notifying ISPs that server with IP xx.xx.xx.xx is involved in a DDoS attack, etc.?

How about it, slush, can we have a list of IP addresses from your server logs?

+1, although it's probably a botnet Sad
366  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Mining (Altcoins) / Re: Cairnsmore1 - Quad XC6SLX150 Board on: April 17, 2013, 11:54:09 AM
I'd like to post a thankyou to the Enterpoint team, my Cairnsmore 1 has performed faultlessly since day 3 of ownership, day 1 and 2 were spent trying to get it to work on Mac OS, which I nearly managed, but had USB/tty issues. Since tethering it to my home network's winXP file-server instead it's been plain sailing, and I have mined ~35btc since September using the device. I knew it was a risky bet buying an FPGA after BFL's announcement, but my gamble paid off very nicely thankyou Smiley

Service from your company has been professional, and your product is very well made and maintenance free. Thanks also to the bitstream coders Smiley

(Now am I tempting fate by posting this? Will I wake up tomorrow to a frazzled board?)

368  Alternate cryptocurrencies / Altcoin Discussion / Re: TRC and PPC client in OSX parrallels - more risky/ more safe? on: April 17, 2013, 10:50:45 AM
It's much safer, especially if you only use your windows VM for these tasks, assuming you used an original windows disc to install the OS and not a cracked download. Why didn't you use Linux in the VM though? I would have thought that was the safest possible option, assuming the cryptocoin clients can be compiled.....

371  Economy / Speculation / Re: Countdown to $200 / bitcoin ? on: April 09, 2013, 04:20:30 PM
I now think it will stall either just below 200 or just above for a day or 2, it's quite a psychological barrier and traders will want time to think.....

That's what everyone said for 100 (including me), but we from 90 to 110 with no hesitation.

Yep, proved wrong again...
372  Economy / Economics / Re: CRASH?! (not) For all the 'nay sayers' on: April 09, 2013, 02:26:09 PM
There are several separate things going on here.

1. Mt Gox has a backlog in the thousands. That will drive new money in for a while. All the press attention and negative market news elsewhere helps significantly, and may continue to help for a long while to come.

Not many people seem to be considering that Mt Gox's AML queue may also consist of miners waiting to cash out, imagine a small time miner who sells small amounts occasionally which means they've never had to think about the AML verification before and haven't set it up. The way things are looking now they are in a position to take their family on a nice holiday or pay off some student debt, whatever, without massively denting their holdings. Cashing out through an exchange would be a safe, legal option to raise the funds, which means joining the AML verification queue.....

379  Economy / Goods / Re: Is it possible to sell a house? on: March 26, 2013, 11:45:38 PM
If I was buying your house for BTC I would insist on having a piece of countersigned and witnessed paper stating:

(seller name) sold (property name) to (buyer name) for (btc price) at a market exchange rate of (fiat mt.gox rate) on (date)

I would definitely be making this statement available to my tax office at the appropriate time, so you would be risking trouble if you tried not declaring it. I don't think you'd find anybody willing to make such a significant purchase without getting something similar in writing.
380  Other / Beginners & Help / Re: Help me find my bitcoin files (OSX) on: March 24, 2013, 11:36:15 PM
Thanks for the quick reply. I totally missed the tilde.

Is there any way to get into that directory with the finder? I can't see it in my home directory. How can I open that file with TextEdit?

In the finder menu under 'Go' there is a 'Go to Folder...' menu option (shift-apple-G), you can type '~/Library' in there to open the library. I'm sure there's some simple 'chmod' type thing you can do in the terminal if you want to make it permanently visible, you should be able to find out with a little googling. -edit or read the above post!
