Changed the answer to the FAQ question about recovering hacked accounts as per theymos' new pinned thread.
387  Other / Politics & Society / Re: Common ground on: December 24, 2018, 11:51:46 PM
The Politics & Society board is a dumpster fire of a sub-forum. While having different opinions is great, discussion (as well any hope for consensus) usually quickly breaks down: due to one or both sides refusing to consider / acknowledge facts, having a completely different view of self and the world around them (hence a different interpretation of what the majority of society considers facts, proper methods to evaluate information and come to conclusions, etc.) or due to being entrenched too deeply within their (often extreme) ideology, unwilling to change their mind even when proven wrong.

Don't get me wrong: this issue is more or less prevalent in pretty much every online medium. Obviously, all of this stems from the fact that people's environment, upbringing, life experience and character traits determine their political preferences (and once you're sure how something should be handled, it's hard to accept a different way that you simply find immoral / stupid / impractical / etc.). However, considering that Bitcointalk is already comprised of people who were willing to embrace something new, go-against-the-man non-mainstream (all of which is often wrapped up in layers and layers of politics), it's not much of a stretch to assume that the political Bitcointalk crowd would very much continue on that ideological path, sometimes to the extremes. So if, on a consistent basis, you're willing to spend tons of time discussing politics on Bitcointalk, you probably have relatively strong (if not extreme) opinions on issues you have at least a mild interest in. And it's difficult, if not impossible, for such people who are constantly at each other's throats to agree on anything they care about.

As for the points outlined in the OP, I can guarantee you that someone will find something wrong with them (especially points 1 and 2). People think differently and at this point of cryptocurrency adoption, we can already see quite a few people joining the community for other reasons than those that joined in the initial wave (2009-2010).

All of that said, maybe (and it's a very strong maybe) a Christmas miracle will happen and everyone (or at least most people) on Bitcointalk will get along for this short week of winter holidays. Merry Christmas everyone.

390  Other / Meta / Re: Is this thread operating within the board rules?? on: December 18, 2018, 09:08:33 AM
Yeah, that's not allowed. I've given the thread's OP a short time out ban and started cleaning up the thread (will probably finish up today or tomorrow).
391  Other / Meta / Re: Forum is now Deleting Negative Posts - Imagine Reality if the Negative Stayed? on: December 17, 2018, 04:19:14 AM
Conspiracy Theory is the worst enemy to man kind.

Bullshit.
We need all of even the craziest theories to keep the mainstream in check. If those in power could just label anything they want a "conspiracy theory" then they could silence any dissenting opinion they wanted.

Limitation of speech is the worst enemy of mankind.

I would have battled alongside this OP if he had a case..

Bitcointalk is not not a government entity and can control the content anyway that it sees fit. If I submitted a "letter to the editor," to a newspaper and they failed to publish it, are they infringing on my free speech? If I submitted a book to a publisher and got a rejection letter, would my free speech rights be infringed? I don't think so.

Hitler felt the same way.

That is a slippery slope you're on.

"Freedom of the press" also involves the right of the press to refuse to publish anything. Otherwise, the government can insist that they publish propaganda, or else...

1 second , you claim btctalk has no obligation to free speech, only censored speech their mods approve of,
the next second, you claim they can refuse because of the rights of the press.

You can't have it both ways.

Are they a free venue to share ideas?
or
Are they a censored source of information?

FYI:
They can't be both.

AFAIK (for what it's worth) none of the mods have engaged in systematic censorship of content based on a poltical agenda or the desire to shape the perception of an event / entity /concept / etc. in a certain way. We do routinely moderate stuff that hinders other people's ability to follow and / or participate in a discussion though - see the rule thread (stickied in Meta).

As for whether it's free, there is no on/off switch when it comes to platform moderation censorship - otherwise 99% of platforms used for discussion would fall under the "censored" category. If I had to place Bitcointalk on the scale, it'd definitely lean more towards the "free" side, probably more so than quite a few other forums.

And as with all of these "sovereign citizen"-like meme beliefs, a relevant xkcd is in order:

(source https://xkcd.com/1357/)

P.S. I am not implying that the expectation of Bitcointalk being a platform open for all kinds of discussion is a ridiculous idea (on the contrary, it's size and direct association with Bitcoin sort of obligates it to hold itself at a higher standard of freedom of discussion). I'm merely highlighting the fact that expecting the forum to not have any moderation is naive, if not moronic.

P.P.S. As for the Hitler comment, see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Godwin%27s_law

398  Other / Meta / Re: Bitcointalk is growing up so fast. 9 years old today on: November 23, 2018, 12:21:12 AM
Happy birthday Bitcointalk. Not exactly in the best shape but, as others pointed out, due to a curse brought on by Bitcoin's success.

I don't know what it was like in the old days but I hear it was great, except when it wasn't.

Everyone talks about how great it was, but I think it was just young and unknown. There were obviously still trolls/scams/spam and shitposts, but with so few users it didn't seem as blatant. Obviously with time and word of mouth these issues have compounded, but I still find great topics/discussions and help peppered throughout the forum.
Not sure whether it's just me looking at the past through rose tinted glasses, but I definitely feel that the "old" (I've started lurking around mid to late 2011) Bitcointalk had a much better signal to noise ratio. Most of what I'd find would either be interesting, funny or at the very least informative. Nowadays, I pretty much hang around Meta (for moderation and the occasional juicy drama) and occasionally venture out, trying to find interesting topics that aren't polluted by low value posts or just outright spam.
399  Other / Meta / Re: [Suggestion]To draw more attention to the rules! on: November 21, 2018, 10:54:08 PM
There's a reason why the rule thread is titled as unofficial:

<...>
I actively disbelieve in the idea of a "rule of law" where hard rules exist and are strictly applied across the board as if we're all robots. Every case should be considered individually in the context of the forum's mission.
<...>

My thoughts on the sentiment aside, I really doubt the thread's going to receive any more recognition beyond a sticky.
