1185  Other / Meta / Re: List of Accounts which Needs a Ban [ICO pumping accounts] on: January 20, 2018, 06:56:08 AM
Updated the thread with a few more accounts which are shitposting, bumping threads and most likely alts which talk to each other in the threads. If you also check their post history,it's quite noticeable how they have sequentially posted in one ICO which they are suppose to bump.
Temp bans for the first 2 and a perma ban for the third one.
1186  Economy / Auctions / Signature space - Global Moderator - 6700+ posts - around 100 posts/month on: January 17, 2018, 04:52:14 PM
I'm auctioning off my signature. I make on average around 100 posts per month. The rules for this auction are:

  • No NSFW content.
  • No scams or shady businesses.
  • No [ glow] tags.
  • I have the right to reject bids or advertisements. You can offer a different one of course.
  • If a user's rank is lower than Member and the bid increase (compared to the last valid bid) is bigger than 0.01 BTC, he has to send in the bid (or the increase if it's not the user's first bid) to 132CbdHzCFnjW9ZwLGiHXzx27Sbi7Bnrzn or the bid is invalid. If the user in question doesn't win the auction, the bid amount minus the miner fee (may vary; depends on current state of Bitcoin) will be sent back.
  • If the service turns out to be a scam, I'll remove the ad and your money will not be refunded.
  • The auction winner must provide payment and the signature ad code within 48 hours of a request via PM.
  • Your signature will have an "Advertisement: " text before it, a notice and should fit within the following example:

Quote

Advertisment:
<Advertisement here>
|  Some sort of
|  text of mine
  |  Websites advertised in my signature are not endorsed by me.
  |  Advertise in my signature

The minimum bid is 0.02 BTC, the bids should be evenly divisible by 0.01 BTC. The auction will end on February 15th when this thread is closed if there is at least 1 valid bid. If there isn't one, it'll end 1 week after the first valid bid is placed. The winner's advertisement will run for 1 month.

Examples for both valid and invalid bids:
Quote
0.02 BTC <------- VALID
0.01 BTC <------- INVALID, lower than minimum bid

0.03 BTC <------- VALID
0.025 BTC <------- INVALID, bid is not evenly divisible by 0.01 BTC

0.10 BTC <------- VALID
0.2556642 BTC <------- INVALID,  bid is not evenly divisible by 0.01 BTC

P.S. Custom offers (that DO NOT include me removing either of the advertisement notices ("Advertisment:") or ("Websites advertised in my signature are not endorsed by me.") ) are welcome via PM though keep in mind that the price of advertising will be much higher.
1187  Other / Meta / Re: Unofficial list of (official) Bitcointalk.org rules, guidelines, FAQ on: January 17, 2018, 04:32:29 PM
Added 2 more FAQ questions, modifed an old one and added guidelines for the 2 new boards:

Quote
Q: When will I be able to add an avatar to my account?
A: Once your account is ranked Full Member or higher.
Quote
Q: Why aren't I receiving any messages from newbies? / I'm a newbie and I can't PM other users
A: In order to mitigate spam, messages to and from newbies have to be opted in. You can do so here: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;sa=pmprefs. If you are a newbie and can't seem to reach a user who's buying / selling goods and / or services, post on his thread about it.

Serious discussion - "More serious discussion. No advertising of any kind. No junk posts. ". Unlike in most other main section boards, altcoin talk here is OK. You must be a Jr Member to post in this board. Posts in this board do not increase your post count.

Ivory Tower (child board of Serious discussion) - "Even more serious discussion. [Full] Members and above only. No advertising of any kind. No junk posts.". Same as Serious discussion in terms of altcoin content. Posts in this board do not increase your post count nor do they count towards your activity.

1191  Economy / Reputation / Re: The Pharmacist - Attacks Filipinos here in BCT on: January 13, 2018, 12:07:24 AM
While The Pharmacist tends to go a bit overboard in his rhetoric, as many have mentioned, his frustrations aren't completely unfounded. Nothing has led me to such desperation as watching East Asian and Russian spammers flood the forum with waves of crap that I'll never be able to mop up, no matter how hard I tried. And while the not every [insert nationality here] is a spammer principle applies, trends do exist and certain countries with shitty living standards do tend to dominate the spamming sphere more than their more affluent counterparts. (Usually) not the individual's fault, but the mind does tend to lump people into categories.

I have seen many many Users and Mods on Here bashing people about their posts because English is not their Primary language and seems "Broken" or sounds "Stupid"

This includes theymos  " - While some amount of error is difficult to avoid, if your English is so broken that you sound stupid, then your post will be deleted." topic is here can't be Quoted https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2722359.0

English speaking people who seem to think that learning a second language perfectly is easy should probably try it themselves.

Imagine that??

You have to ask yourself how many languages does theymos fluently speak? or how about The Pharmacist? or Mr. Prep?
I speak 2 languages fluently. English is my second language. You have no excuses. This is an english speaking forum - if you can't speak english well, either stay in the local sections or don't post at all. Also, it's mprep (pronounced as em-prep; always starts with a lowercase m when written).

P.S. This seems a bit out of place in Meta TBH.

1193  Other / Meta / Re: Newbie PM opt-in on: January 11, 2018, 10:52:17 PM
Finally. Not exactly a perfect solution, but an effective one at least. Would be great if users who haven't opted into receiving PMs from newbies would see some sort of notice in the Inbox. Just in case someone's expecting a PM from a newbie and isn't up to par with the latest restrictions.
1194  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 11, 2018, 10:41:29 PM
The name is supposed to be fun. I don't actually mean that people who post in the section are "living in an ivory tower".
I wouldn't have an issue with the name and it's connotations if the forum was in a better state than it is now. There's a fine line between parody-level satire and Ajit Pai satire. With all the hordes of shitposters continually degrading any discussion they come upon, this seems to slowly veer of into the latter.

1196  Other / Meta / Re: Are you embarrassed to post in the ivory tower? on: January 11, 2018, 12:17:33 PM
As I mentioned in the announcement thread for the new sections, the "Ivory Tower" name (and in part the board itself) feels like something that'd be joke in a Meta thread about declining post quality forum-wide, not an actual board. While giving a space for coherent discussion is great, this really does seem like an attempt of dodging the problem. I wouldn't say I'm embarrassed, moreso a bit baffled - it just feels kind of surreal when we start dividing the forum into neighborhoods, as if it's a social experiment and not an actual place where discussion and business happens. "Here's where the rich and cool people hang out, this other district is for the middle class and the rest of the city is slums".

I dunno, the entire thing just seems to leave a bad taste in my mouth.
1197  Other / Meta / Re: My account got stolen on: January 11, 2018, 12:08:21 PM
3 Months later, no response from any of the admins, can some mod, or anyone help me ping them? Thanks very much!
PM me the signed message and I'll at least lock the account.
1198  Other / Meta / Re: My original account hacked on: January 11, 2018, 12:06:56 PM
From https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=703657.0:

Q: My account was hacked! What do I do?
A: See this thread: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=497545.0. If you don't know how to sign a message, see this thread made by shorena: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=990345.0

Also, remember when PMing the signed message, send it in [code ][/code ] brackets (just without the space at the end). For example,

Code:
-----BEGIN BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----
My account <account> has been hacked/lost. Please reset the email to <email>. The current date is <date>.
-----BEGIN SIGNATURE-----
<insert address here>
<insert signature here>
-----END BITCOIN SIGNED MESSAGE-----

Here is the unedited post where I posted that address: ...
OR
I sent that address to someone in a PM with PM ID#...

If you don't know how to sign a message and the tutorial mentioned before didn't mention your client, google for some tutorials with terms like: "signing messages with <insert your bitcoin client name here>". For example, "signing messages with bitcoin-qt".
1199  Other / Meta / Re: Idea: Excluding newbies from the bounty section on: January 11, 2018, 10:42:48 AM
Well how shitty does this forum have to get before heavy-handed measures become necessary?   I would suggest that the benefits of a measure like this would outweigh any inconveniences experienced by some noobs who are in all likelihood alt accounts anyway.  It's not a perfect solution, but it's worth trying.  It's better than doing nothing.  If you keep doing nothing, bitcointalk might as well start up a local board for English.  Drives me nuts when proposals get shot down because they're not perfect.  Nothing is.
Spamming will continue taking place in that board too,if ever theymos decides to create such. Shitposters just need a place to post and increase their activity count. I have doubt,if a person gets banned, their IP also does get banned? But yet people create their legion of alts and come back. I have seen websites which tackle the VPN problem, wherein people with multiple accounts are exposed even while they use VPN,is it possible for it to be implemented in this forum too? This will tackle one of the greatest issues on bitcointalk, right? A lot of people are wasting their time for nothing if shitposters keep coming back. Any thoughts on this??

It'll cost the spammers to do so though. If signatures get removed from ranks (and thus activity), users are going to have to pay to get one and while a regular user might not have many issues paying 10-50$ for a sig for his only account (especially if he plans to actively participate in the forum), a spammer's is going to take the hit of the aforementioned 10-50$ for each of his accounts getting banned.

And that's why I agree with hilariousandco's suggestion to make certain boards not count towards the post count or activity. Doesn't impact what content can be posted yet removes any incentive for posting there, aside from genuinely wanting to discuss the legitimacy of a project or participating in a bounty / bitcoin giveaway / etc.

Simply removing signatures from ranks would solve the alts issue as a person would have to pay cold hard cash for each account he wants to run a sig campaign on (and as previously mentioned, would suffer a direct monetary loss for each of his accounts getting banned). Considering the generally privacy-conscious crowd that seems to hang around here, I doubt the alt detection would do much as most people who want to hide their alts simply sign up with a VPN, proxy or Tor in the first place.
1200  Other / Meta / Re: Idea: Excluding newbies from the bounty section on: January 11, 2018, 08:22:53 AM
Seems a bit too heavy handed.

The bounty board isn't the core issue. If all shitposting was limited to it, we probably wouldn't be talking about it. The issue is users using the pumped accounts outside said board and until that gets solved, enacting measures that only put extra burden on moderators is pointless. That's why I mentioned simply not counting posts and activity within such boards - stops the pumping and doesn't require mods to interfere.
