We should really do something about the synch time though. Would it make synch faster if there were more hubs and relays? Do hubs and relays have to have public/static IP addresses?
good Q. and i would like to know how can i help ... i hate this sync ...

If you have skills with .js and sql you may suggest merged pull requests on github.

Anyone know resource requirements to run a full node? Is it just storage that's required basically?

A "full node" is a hub or a relay. Yes mostly storage. About 1GB growth per month. Also bandwidth as wallets synch from hubs database (full wallets) or fetch and post to hubs (light wallets).

Haven't sync'ed my wallet for a 1month, seems it takes forever to get sync'ed... performance is an issue!

Yes, but you don't have to run a full node and can switch to a light wallet which syncs in a few seconds.

You dont' need a full wallet for an average use. Switch to a light wallet.

How to switch to a light wallet? Is it a different wallet or is it done in the full one?
What is considered a light wallet?
One that doesn't download the entire blockchain of the .dat file?
I didn't think byteball had a blockchain, just the DAG and witnesses??? I will admit I haven't fully dug into all the terminology though.

I installed the light wallet because I heard the regular wallet took forever to sync... not sure what you are syncing if there are no blocks though....
Yeah that is some strange terminology to the ones who did not follow it from it's very start.
I have been just into to many coins right now and doing sia's wallet right now and it's been trying to sync for the last 2 hours now. 100GB from what I last read up on it's .dat file.
So the light wallet for byteball shouldn't be that big, since it started late last year and not over 2 years of data needed for this wallet to sync with on their type of blockchain.

The light wallet does not download the database (not 100GB but around 5GB at the moment). It synchs in a minute and relies on a "home hub" for the database. You can choose the home hub of your choice see https://byteball.fr

How do you know which coin received their byteball share? What if someone move their coins to new address every round? will he receive byteball again?

First it's important to know that you can participate in multiple rounds with the same Bitcoin. If for instance the Bitcoin was moved to a different address every round, then only the address with the Bitcoin linked to it will receive distribution.
So someone with 10 btc could claim byteball 6 times already (in case if he moves coins to new address every round)?
No. There is a snapshot of the BTC blockchain before each distribution starts. You don't need moving your BTC and you can't cheat moving your BTC.

I like Byteball and the very fast transfer. Only consideration I have is the lack of decentralization at least at the moment.
The data are 100% decentralized among hubs and full wallet.

Only Witnesses are for the majority in dev hand, but it is supposed to be an intermediate state before being decentralized too. Dont' forget that Byteball is only 6 months old and need a little more time to reach more mass adoption and decentralization.

So is it right now helpful to set up another hub/witness to support the network?
Hubs and witnesses have to be changed manually by the user. The question is, if the average user can do and will do that (also to a hub or witness they don't know).

Also another question: Is it possible to change the fees later on? Right now a transaction costs approx 0,6 KB which is $0.0004.
But with an increasing price transactions could be very expensive.
Is it possible to change the fee to not beequal to the size of the data but to half the size? Or 1/10? (Rounded of course to be an integer)

Thanks in advance.

A hub will always be helpfull for the network. There is not a real demand for a witness at the moment.

The fee computation is in the code. It can always be changed.

You suck ByteFan and your witness sucks, you should not encourage FUD.

Taking into account that Byteball is still WIP I need helpers to report on that channel if something goes wrong. In that case we'll stop the test and resume after the devs fix the issue.

I personaly agree with this way to proceed. Better detect and fix a potential issue now than later (no doubt the network will be under attack one day in the future). I have joined the channel.

@SatoNatomato, is it fine if we do our testing of DB compression ratio on the testnet or you prefer sticking to the original plan (using the mainnet)? I'll need some assistance for the testnet scenario. Or we can just go with the mainnet one, I reserved 5 GB for the fees.

Please drop a warning before running your test against mainnet.

https://byteball.fr/Top100ByteballRichest.php

seems richlist not updated yet?
 Wink

There was a little (now fixed) bug that prevented the update following the recent airdrop.

The rich list is up to date now.

First: Thank you all for good work, and for free byteballs Smiley

A feedback:
I think the rich list contains all address, i.e. the first has more GBYTE as our marketcap Smiley
I found more addresses from richlist not in distribution. (( https://byteball.fr/Top100ByteballRichest.php vs. http://transition.byteball.org/ ))
Such addresses should becomes a remark in rich list - I think... i.e.: not yet distributed; developer acc; ...

The first address holds the remaining for further distribution (see the array foot note)

Thank you. I see it already.

And the 4. and 5. addresses? There are some funds for development / developer / marketing ? Both has ~ 10000 GBYTE and

724508 (1st - not yet distributed) + 255492 (marketcap) = 980000

The (second) richest has ~10000 BTC Smiley good to know Smiley
The third I don't found in distribution - maybe an exchange?

#4 et #5 get each one 1% of the whole and will not get further from distribution. One is Tonych and the other the remaining 1% after distribution completed (see OP).

Maintenance notice

Due to database size increase, east.byteball.us and west.byteball.us are being migrated to a new environment and will be down while synching in the background.

Tonych has pressed the big red button. Distribution is running now....

I'm glad to introduce the Snail Coin Toss

It's a 51/49 coin toss that you can play directly with a bot, it doesn't require your trust since a smart-contract is used.

Pair your device with the bot: AlC854WVi7kHvTn0z6k4i7/GihEYQUltB7vkLGw4+efH@byteball.org/bb#R and go to chat.

Bot asks you the amount you want to bet, your address and send you a payment request to a smart address like this:

There are four possibilities for spending the smart address.

1. if the random oracle generates a number < 49000 and if you properly made the payment, then it's you who can spend the smart-address.

2. if the random oracle generates a number >= 49000, then the bot can sweep the money back.

3. if you didn't pay to the address, then the bot can sweep the money back.

4. you can spend the smart-address if it was already spent, it's a security in case you make a payment to the smart-address after the bot has swept the address for any reason. It's not translated by GUI in an human-readable way yet, it will done in next versions.

The random oracle uses a BTC block with 2 confirmations to generate a random number, that's why you have to wait an undefined time before knowing the result.

For now, the bet amount is limited at 1MB. I will increase the limit later.

Have fun !

Nice bot.

hey i try to add your witness adress true both steps but i got an error:
1. when i use auto-update , nothing happens , no adress change.
2. when i put manual the adress is saying: no stable messages from the new witness yet

my wallet is not full sync and is a full wallet. cheers

Hi! The witness is properly running. Please wait full wallet synch and try again.

Let me know if the problem persists.
Cheers

What is a current size of byteball.sqlite file of a full synced wallet?

My current one is 3,559,501,824 bytes and I'm still syncing. The program shows about 85-90% progress of "new units". However, that may be not accurate since I've restarted the program twice and every time it started from 0. I hope that upon restart it didn't remove previously synced data. So, I suspect the real syncing pgrogress should be at 90-95%. Syncronizing lasts for 5 days.

5GB

What is a current size of byteball.sqlite file of a full synced wallet?
Is it also possible to copy this database (byteball.sqlite) to another machine, so that machine will not spend days for syncing? If yes, should the other machine have the same wallet(s) to be able to use the database?

That's light wallets are for.

So i withdrew my bytes to my Byteball wallet but when I put the address in the link it says:

"Warning! This address is NOT linked! You will receive 199,600,000 bytes and NO Blackbytes"

Is that in reference to my bitcoin? I'm still receiving the bytes for my Gbyte holding right?  Are no Blackbytes being given this round?

You have to move all your bytes to a linked byteball address <--> BTC address if you want to get Blackbytes (any BTC address, even an empty one).
