Smells like fractional reserves...
Bitstamp was audited by Mike Hearn, a Bitcoin dev back in May 2014. He said that everything seemed OK and all the funds were fully backed in their cold storage wallets. This was just 8 months ago and I'd be surprised if the situation has changed since then. Yeah, well... This was before the hack, huh... Now, there are not a million options here: 1. Bitstamp pays $5M with the fees they charged. That's tough, because they had about $1.5M worth of trading each day. At a 0.3% average, that gives $4500 per day. It would take them 1111 days of such fees to pay for those $5M, running costs non accounted for. Impossible. 2. They get $5M from their insurance. I've been working with insurers for such matters myself. Can't find one that would do that, so I'd bet they weren't insured for such a hack. 3. They get $5M from investors. That's tricky. New investors won't be stepping into this mess, so that leaves the previous VC that brought $10M. But this money was probably spent. If not, why bringing it in in the first place? Maybe they'd add $5M to protect the $10M they invested prior to the hack, but that's a dangerous move. Not impossible, but doubtful... 4. They run on fractional reserves. Easy, as long as 88% of the funds remain there. On which option would you bet? the owners are millionaires. they are some kind of stars of the slovenian (IT) economy and have won shiny international awards for their company. concerning reputation, much is at stake for them. how much of their wealth would they sacrifice of get out of this mess without becoming karpeles like persona non gratas for the rest of their lives? all of it ? maybe not ... half of their stash? well, i would speculate they'd do that. if they get this solved they'd be heroes for many people. It is not 20 or 50 mio, so my bet is that there is good motivation for them to do everything to get it fixed properly. this is pure speculation, i know, but hey... edit: i have coins there so maybe hope is influencing my judgement |

Wenn sie mal unseren Stress gehabt hätten, würden sie vielleicht nicht mehr über uns lachen. Eine Gesellschaft muss sich erneuern und ständig neue Dinge ausprobieren. Sonst ist sie tot. Die Leute, die die Pionierarbeit leisten, sind natürlich oft die Gearschten und machen eine blöde Figur. Gibt aber auch Erfolgsgeschichten.
Ich sehe bei Bitcoin das Problem im Blockreward. Deshalb geht es bei uns noch übler zu als an jedem anderen Handelsplatz. Und natürlich das total Unregulierte. Trotzdem hat es auch gerade deshalb was. Ich glaube Bitcoin hat auch viel mit Abenteurer zu tun. Seinen wir ehrlich: besonders aufregend ist unser modernes Leben nicht. Aber Bitcoin, dass ist halt wirklich mal ein Abenteuer und eines das uns Nerds entspricht. Wir müssen nur alle irgendwann die Kurve kriegen, damit es nicht zur Sucht wird. Aber was ich die letzte drei Jahre mit Bitcoin erlebt habe, darüber könnte ich ein Buch schreiben und ich glaube, dass geht hier sehr vielen so.
Ich versuche jetzt mich anders mit Bitcoin zu beschäftigen und betrachte es als Hobby. Trading ist mir inzwischen viel zu aufregend. Ich hab meinen Stress gehabt. Beziehe ich aber nicht nur auf Bitcoin. Ohne Bitcoin hätte ich nie in meinem Leben getradet, mich mit Trends und TA beschäftigt oder wüsste auch nur was Kerzencharts sind. Es ist definitiv eine Lebenserfahrung. Ich habe auch einfach eine Menge interessanter Ansichten kennen gelernt. Alleine die Diskussionen hier wollte ich nicht missen. Auch wenn ich hier vielleicht irgendwann kürzer trete, nehme ich doch sehr viel an Erfahrung daraus mit.

Manchmal erkläre ich mir die Sucht nach dem Kursverlauf auch mit meinem Bedürfnis das ich sehen will 'wie Bitcoin lebt'. Kann das jemand nachvollziehen? Bei https://blockchain.info sieht man auch wie Bitcoin lebt, und zwar direkt/in Echt, aber auf dauer ist das ganze ehr sehr trocken. Das auf und ab im Chart ist spannender. Kann ich sehr gut nachvollziehen. Wenn da nur nicht die Kommentare von Arbeitskollegen und Bekannten wären wie:"Der Bitcoinkurs stürzt ja voll ab. Zu so einem Scheiss wolltest du uns überreden? Das Pyramidenspiel bricht zusammen. " nur zwei kurze beispiele: auf einem schulfest kam ich ins gespräch über bitcoin mit sehr wohlhabenden eltern von klassenkameraden eines meiner kinder. leute aus dem dem IT bereich, kaliber ehem. vorstandsvorsitzender. der kam aus dem lachen nicht mehr heraus. eine ex-freundin hat karriere bei einem grossen internationalen wirtschaftsberater gemacht. bei einem gespräch kam das thema bitcoin auf (inclusive meiner begeisterung). sie musste lachen und riet mir schnellstmöglichst auszusteigen. manchmal weiß ich nicht was schlimmer ist an dem jahrelangen btc kursverfall: dass mein (virtuelles) vermögen schmilzt oder dass all die recht bahalten könnten, die bitcoin lächerlich finden. |

Ich versuche nur einigen hier die Augen zu öffnen. Klar sind wir ein BitcoinThread in einem Crypto-Forum... Mir scheint hier halt eine etwas engstirnige Sichtweise auf alles was nicht BTC ist die ich nicht ganz verstehe. Bin mal gespannt wie's weitergeht... könnte mir vorstellen das bei bitfinex & Co. nicht genügent Kapital rumliegt für irgendwelceh Kurskapriolen... Ist die Meldung eigentlich bestätigt das bistamp innert 24h wieder online geht? das ist sehr nobel von dir. ich könnte auch versuchen euch die augen zu öffnen bezüglich der produkte, welche ich in meinem laden verkaufe oder bezüglich des (sheit?)coins in dem ich noch investiert bin. ob uns das weiterbringt, vor allem, wenn man bedenkt, dass jeder hier seine ganz eigenen vorstellungen von engstirnig und augen öffnen hat - vor allem in bezug auf sheit coins? |

isn´t btc generous ? the über bulls get a fortune sooner or later and the bear trolls get this special feeling of being real smart (arses) for the entire year of 2014 and maybe 2015 in the forum fist fights.

it is always the same. i am so deeply sucked into bitcoin (very delusional perma bull i guess) that whenever we go over a cliff like today i think: "thaaaat´s it, finally. i will get out. i cannot take this anymore." of course i can´t sell right into the panic, so i promise myself i will sell them all once it has bounced back to a level that once looked so boring (but now looks so shiny). but when it climbs back up, i keep forgetting my despair and then - of course i never never sell once it has reached more comfortable levels. i know this and i still cannot escape. hope seems to be stronger than fear. it feels fucking bad to lose money. but in my case it seems to feel 10 times worse to lose btc. i will end up with lots of worthless btc i guess. LOL (more of a chuckle actually) So when do we start planning the "bitcoin hits 10,000 party?" (Serious question) there are no plans for that right now. |
